Performance :: Computer Suddenly Stopped Booting Up
Jan 20, 2016
Recently, my computer has been very strange... I have been having unwitnessed BSODs (showing up in the reliability monitor), lots of hardware errors in the reliability monitor and multiple programs stopping working. The troubleshooting steps I took to try to solve these issues were: updating all drivers, testing ram with memtest86+ (8 passes OK), testing the hard drive with Sea Tools (all ok) and refreshing windows 10.
A couple of days ago, I experienced my start menu, Cortana all "apps" etc. not working. So, I logged off, only to find a black screen with a cursor! The only way to turn off was to do a hard shut down. After turning back on again, I got the usual windows start up screen and normal "AVG watchdog starting up" text (see attachment). However, my computer freezes at this stage. AVG stops at finished and the computer freezes!
After trying to boot into safe mode, I simply get the black screen and cursor again.
Luckily, I have all files backed up and other computers to use, but I am really concerned about the root cause of my problems as I have had similar errors in previous installs of windows.

Just to preface this I have not received a BSOD when this happens so I hope I'm still posting this in the correct location. However my laptop just freezes completely and I have to do a hard shutdown (holding the power button until it shuts off) whenever I wake my laptop up from sleeping or even when I cold boot it.
I have checked Event Viewer and I see that I have a couple of recurring errors, the first being:
"DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service lfsvc with arguments "Unavailable" in order to run the server:
{08D9DFDF-C6F7-404A-A20F-66EEC0A609CD}"
Wit the second being: "The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start."
However I am able to boot into safe mode just fine, even safe mode with networking and everything behaves normally. I have tried a clean install as this started happening after doing the upgrade from Windows 7 so I figured a clean install would clear up the issue if it was an issue with it upgrading.

I recently upgraded to Version 1511 of Windows 10 Home. I have been using it for almost a week without problems, but all of a sudden this morning it is booting to a picture screen showing the date and time.
When I click on the screen it changes to a password page. The thing is I have never had a password. I have tried leaving it blank and clicking OK, but it will not accept this. So I am in effect being shut out of Windows. How can I get back to Windows?

I installed the Windows 10 beta from Window 7 a few days ago. I installed all the recent updates. Everything was working fine but then yesterday, I watched something on YouTube for about an hour and at that point the mouse became unresponsive. I've tried everything I can think of but nothing works. I've shut down, re-booted, gone into the bios but with no success. Windows 10 will open but the mouse remains unresponsive. I even plugged-in a brand new mouse but that hasn't worked at all.
I have another hard drive with Windows 8.1 from my other PC that has a defective motherboard and out of frustration, I installed the drive from that PC on this one. It works but sometimes I have to re-boot my PC a few times on start-up and then if I leave a browser open for a while without activity, the browser becomes unresponsive and although the mouse cursor works, it is not able to do anything.

I have two desktops and a NAS drive on my network. Both PC's are Win10. One Pro, the other Home. Everything was working beautifully then out of nowhere the Home machine just stopped accessing the public folder on the Pro machine saying it didn't have permission. I thought the Public folder didn't need permissions if it's shared with Everybody. But it will access and read the other non-public shares on the Pro machine. Weird The Pro machine, however, doesn't even see the Home machine on the network any more, although I can ping it. Again, weird. I had a mapped drive to the Home machine which is now broken. Both PC's can see and access the NAS drive. No settings were changed, nothing was touched, it just worked one minute and stopped the next. The Pro machine was just updated to Build 10586.3 on 11/13/15. But I don't think that caused it because everything worked until the 17th. All the network settings were correct and they have not been changed. I can't find anything about it on the internet except the typical "Make sure Network Discovery is on and file sharing is enabled." Yes, Network Discovery is on and file and printer sharing is enabled on both machines. Still no go.

So I put together a new PC running Windows 10 Pro around 3 months ago and everything was working perfect till 2 days ago when my mic suddenly stopped working. I use a Steelseries Siberia V2 headset and the headphones work fine, but the mic is not picking up any noise at all. I tried plugging in both the back and front ports and my realtek always detects that a mic has been plugged in, but it simply won't work. I thought maybe my mic got busted so I also tried using an A4 Tech headset that I had lying around in the office but it has the same issue, the mic won't work. I looked around online for possible solutions and tried the following with no luck:
Ensured the mic was set as the default device and that its volume settings were maxed out.Tried disabling all sound effects (noise suppression, acoustic echo cancellation etc).Uninstalled all audio drivers and reinstalled the latest realtek drivers on my motherboard's webpage: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1151 - GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0)
Uninstalled all audio drivers and reinstalled the latest realtek drivers on realtek's own webpage: RealtekUninstalled all audio drivers and let Windows auto-install drivers.I even uninstalled all realtek drivers and tried using the standard "high definition audio device drivers."
Basically tried everything in this link: Microphone Not Working in Windows 10? | Win 10 FAQ
The conclusion was the same with everything I tried, the sound worked fine in both my speakers and headphones, but the mics simply didn't work. What's strange is that it just stopped working out of nowhere. I didn't install any new software or hardware or make any changes prior to the issue. Just turned the PC on one day and boom, mics not working.
I've attached screenshots of what my mic settings looked like with the realtek drivers and without.

I got home today and went to open the start menu on my computer, but it didn't respond. Neither does the search menu, nor Windows Edge, or Groove Music or the Windows 10 video program. All of my other programs on the task bar open when I click them, and when I right click the start menu button I am given a list of options, but not ability to access any of the application that I don't have on my task bar or desktop. I tried running POWERSHELL and sfc /scannow, but it found not integrity violations. So now I am not sure what next.

On my main Windows 10 machine my mechanical keyboard has suddenly stopped working. The keyboard itself works perfectly fine on my other systems and laptops but seems to not work on my main one. The keyboard works on the bios screen and any other part of the start up except from the login screen which is when it seems to completely stop responding. Buttons such as caps lock and also the num-lock stop lighting up the LED's and no keys seem to work. The computer recognizes other keyboards, which is how I'm writing this post, but it seems that my expensive mechanical doesn't work on this specific machine.
The keyboard itself is one that only requires the HID Interface, so you just plug it in and it works and I've even tried uninstalling all keyboard drivers but this is still no dice. I'm not really quite sure what to do, seeing as the keyboard only seems to go wrong on this machine, and other keyboards work fine,

My searchbar/cortana has suddenly stopped working, when I click I get a message telling me there is a problem, please sign out.
-So I created a new user account, this fixed the problem for that account
-So I tried to sign in to the newly added local account with my Microsoft account and entered my username and password
-I then got a screen asking for my old password (I assume its the microsoft password)
-I got a message telling me its not correct for this device (I only have one password)
-So I left it blank (as per the on screen instructions)
-The I got an error screen 'oops something went wrong, its probably our fault' and that's it, cant get any further.
So I thought Id transfer all the files and settings from my old account to the new account, and Ive hit a brick wall, how can I do this ? the new account has no knowledge og my applications, documents, pictures, etc. I just cant install everything.

My machine has stopped booting into Windows 10 and a strange white vertical stripe has appeared my monitor. The machine startup, refuses to load then just keeps rebooting until the various recovery options appear.
Have tried a reset but nothing appears to fix it. Now it just keeps rebooting without any of the recovery options.

I have a strange problem. Suddenly optimization is not available for my SSD partitions in the Win 10 defrag tool. Before you say defrag is not done on SSD let me say that I checked and the Win 10 tool auto detects its SSD and preforms TRIM commands instead of normal defrag if it's a SSD so it should be working better yet the screenshot shows it did run on 5.8.2015 .. then suddenly it become unavailable. I haven't changed anything let me say: Now I checked that TRIM is indeed enabled and should be working proven with the below screen:
I also ran the "WinSAT formal" command again and made sure "optimize service" is running in services.. I don't really know what this could be,.. the drive is a Samsung SSD 850 EVO on a normal PC, I have AHCI mode enabled in bios. Is this possibly a problem because I upgraded from 8.1 and didn't do a clean install? You think it would fix the problem if I clean installed? Is TRIM working or this optimization not available actually means it don't currently do TRIM?

This PC has been working for about 3 years or so and suddenly today it started lagging really badly. I have done a fresh install of Windows 10 (wiping the previous partitions) and it's lagging even before I install any drivers. The extraction speed on zip file was around 100-200 kB/s and periodically went to 0. Is this a hard drive failing?

I'm having some issues with my PC I have never had before. The computer is a personal rig I have personally worked on, but these last weeks some problems started appearing.
Problem 1) Had this problem for months, I think this problem also escalated to create
problem 2) I cannot "restart" my computer. Do I want to restart? I would have to shutdown and then start it up again.
When I press restart, it starts logging off, shutting down, and when my screen go blank (no signal, pc lights/fans = on) it just stays there for ever. Tried waiting once but after 4 hours I gave up.
When I start my computer I get my BIOS screen. After the BIOS timer, the boot screen gets taken over by Windows 10 with it's loading circle.
My computer stays loading here for about 8-10 minutes and then it continues booting like normal.
I am willing to follow many steps to find out this problem!! I suspect maybe unfinished installations or my other HDD interfering with the initial boot?
Also, could this problem be caused by a PSU failing? (My oldest pc component)
My windows is now on my main ssd (samsung evo 500gb) - I also have a ocz 250gb and western hdd 1tb which I had windows on previously (user files still on, no boot)...

I am using Dell inspiron laptop (pretty old one) which started acting weirdly. Upon examining, there was a problem with HDD so I had it changed.
As soon as I got new HDD installed and installed Windows 10 on it, computer started acting weird again - slow startups, random freeze etc.- but it was running ok and I was fine with it. But earlier today, it suddenly displayed BSOD and crashed when it was idle. Now to the main and the funny part, it does not boot anymore. To elaborate, blank screen appears after BIOS screen (right when the logo of windows should be displayed) and it remains blank for several more minutes before the logo and spinning dots magically appear, it doesnt disappear thereafter.
I figured, I could run startup repair or some other tool to solve the problem by booting from the DVD of windows 10. Now for this one, the logo appears with the spinning dots which disappears after a while like it should. And after it disappears, blank screen persists thereafter. Dumbfounded, I tried booting from a USB stick of Windows 8 I had which gave the same problem.

Today I used a registry cleaner to fix my slow system, but instead of repairing it it made my PC stuck in user login bootloop, but they backed up the registry and I have it. So the question is, how can I import the registry in this non-booting PC?
I tried running RegEdit from CMD from Repair DVD, but "load hives" is greyed out!

I just reinstalled Win10. Before doing so I could go directly to my password screen, without the previous window due to a tweak, and when I keyed in my password it would open automatically without having to press the "Enter" key. Now I must do so. My search has only found how to not have the first screen mentioned above but not the password part.

I am currently trying to troubleshoot my computer as it has recently stopped booting up.
For months now, I have been having intermittent issues with BSODs, 'hardware errors' (in the reliability monitor) and freezes on multiple installs of Windows.A few weeks ago, I installed a new graphics card (Asus GT610 2GB) which replaced integrated graphics. Also, at the same time as installing the graphics card I 'refreshed' Windows 10 and installed all of the latest drivers.
All was running fine for a few days, until the computer simply refused to boot one day. When ever I try to boot now, the Windows startup screen simply hangs and never does anything. Safe mode simply boots to a black screen.I have tried to run linux live cds and Windows disks. All of which often fail to boot (they just hang on the startup screen).
So far, I have tested my ram with memtest86+ (8 passes) and hard drive with seatools (long test passed). I attach the last version I could get of the BSOD logs (the folder is slightly outdated as obviously I cannot get any logs now!)...

I forgot to add that I did the upgrade from Windows 7 originally and had the problem so I figured it might have been an issue with the upgrade itself causing some kind of problem so I did a clean install of Windows 10 Pro on it and the issue still existed afterwards as well.

Today, Windows 10 decided to act up.When I turn on my computer, it boots my UEFI interface, the Windows 10 loading screen with the spinning dots and then a black screen with no cursor.
It's not my 7870 or monitor as I tried it using the motherboard graphics and my other monitor.
In Windows 10's troubleshooting menu, System Restore won't work because of some file being deleted.Startup Repair requires a successful boot to enable Safe Mode, which I can't.Resetting with all files intact gives me the same result.Rolling back to Windows 7 is impossible due to Windows 10 deleting all my Windows 7 files.
What do I do aside from formatting?I need the files inside that HDD.
