Performance :: Explorer Not Work At Start Up But Fine On Reboot
Dec 17, 2015
I recently purchased a new Alienware Laptop with Windows 10 installed. I'm having issues where on start-up, programs such as File Explorer, Internet Explorer etc. are taking 5-10 mins to load, whilst Apps such as Windows Edge load straight away. If I also try to open say my C Drive on File Explorer once it loads, I just get the Blue Loading Disc for another 5-10 mins until that loads.
But if I restart my laptop, everything then seems to run fine after that (but obviously I don't want to have to keep doing that as a permanent solution). I'll run a Virus Scan and make sure there's nothing bad on there...
about a month ago I built a new pc with windows 10 home 64 bit but about 2 weeks ago my computer had this issue where it blue-screens after 5 minutes of use, reboots and works perfectly after that. The most common error message that i get when it goes into blue-screen is MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. Also about 3 weeks ago i was installing an internet card, i plugged in the internet card and the computer turned on. The card didn't click into place so i pulled it out(while the computer was on, i know very stupid) but while i was doing that it touched the GPU and caused a spark. I don't know whether i have incorrect drivers or if any of the components were damaged in the spark.
Over the course of about a month and a half I've been getting these BSODs that state driver irql not less or equal (netio.sys) and also sometimes page fault in non paged area. the weird thing is that after 5 mins the system crashes however after I reboot the system works perfectly fine. I've been hearing a lot of reports online that the crashing has to do with faulty drivers, and i noticed that my wireless adapter (Asus pce ac68) was not working properly according to device manager I new it was faulty drivers so I took it into my local computer shop and the next day they had it fixed. However the problem has not been fixed. I still get the BSODs and apparently antivirus software is partly to blame. could Norton 360 (the antivirus software that i use) be responsible for all these crashes?
I have been trying to test Bluetooth file transfer on my Lenovo IdeaPad running Windows 10. I am using an Android phone and an Android tablet to transfer a file. NOTE: Bluetooth transfer from the phone to the tablet works as expected, therefore any error in the Bluetooth stack on these devices can be ruled out.
On the Windows 10 laptop, the pairing works. I've documented the process here. The error can be seen in picture 3. I can pair the LG Optimus G Pro with Windows 10. However, when I initiate transfer from the phone OR the PC, the transfer fails. On Android, the error is just "Transfer unsuccessful". I've posted 3 images about the error on Windows when transfer is initiated.
1) Device paired confirmation: [URL] 2) Initiating transfer: [URL] 3) Transfer failure: [URL] (Connected party did not properly respond after a period of time...)
I have a Broadcom Bluetooth USB 4.0 driver installed. How to solve this? Lenovo has not published a Win 10 specific driver for my device (Y580)
A few days ago, I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10 and took Cortana for a bit of a test drive. It wasn't great but it might be useful on some occasions.
Today, I bought a brand new laptop which installed Windows 10 when I powered it on. After the installation, I was checking things out a bit and wanted to verify that Cortana was working on the new laptop. Cortana promptly told me it was not available in this region!
This makes no sense to me. I was in Southern Ontario, Canada, both times (although in different cities within the area). I can't believe that Cortana would work in London Ontario but NOT in Kitchener Ontario, which is only an hour east of London.
I am having trouble with the modern apps and connectivity. It feels like half my computer will connect to the internet, and the other half won't. Desktop apps like Chrome, Steam, Outlook, iTunes etc. all connect to the internet fine, but any of the Windows apps like Xbox, Store and (most frustratingly) Settings will not connect.
In my network and sharing centre in the control panel it says 'You are not connected to any networks' - but in the system tray, and in the settings app it shows me as connected to my home wi-fi. I am on a desktop, and using a USB wireless adapter. I don't think the adapter is the problem as I have tried it on another desktop in our house on Windows 10 and it worked fine. Curiously also, when I click 'Adapter settings' in the control panel, it shows the wifi connection.
I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, both through the Windows update and adapter website but to no avail (and as I mentioned, it seems the adapter works fine elsewhere). I've updated manually to the latest Windows 10 Pro build, i've done a DNS flush, I've tried disabling firewalls and anti-virus, I've tried disabling startup apps, I've done a clean install of Windows 10 and still am unable to fix the issue.
I found that one can shorten the steps of shutting down windows by creating a shortcut on the desktop. by using this command "%windir%System32shutdown.exe /s /t 0" The shutdown exe file can be found in the directory above. I thought I may be able to create a similar shortcut but there is no 'reboot.exe' file in this directory so I assume it must have a different name. There are 4 files with the word 'boot' in it perhaps it is one of those.
A while ago, after upgrading to Win10, my memory usage jumped to 99% percent while watching a movie via VLC player. I couldn't find anything in the task manager that seemed to use up all 16 gb of my memory, the new layout of task manager confused me a bit, so I simply rebooted. Fixed the problem.
Today The same thing happened to me again, except this time the memory usage continues AFTER a reboot, and then another reboot. My desktop computer seems completely possessed by whatever is using up my memory. I consider myself to be a very advanced user, although not a professional, but I can't figure out how to nail down this culprit via the task manager. Nothing seems to be using up a lot of memory, the total of all the apps isn't close enough, yet it does identify my memory usage at 99%. There were no unusual apps running in the background, just VLC running an HD 1080p movie, which I have done many times on that computer.
I can imagine this will happen again if I don't find the issue. Where to start troubleshooting to find a memory hog that only happens once in a great while? Does it have anything to do with windows updating itself secretly and automatically now?
Yesterday I installed some updates on my computer, however when it was rebooting it sat there for about an hour doing nothing. Eventually I force turned it off and tried to reboot it, however it kept doing the same thing. I looked up any fixes I could find, the only thing I saw was to try and boot it in safe made (Ctrl-Alt-Del then holding shift while clicking restart) even that still just sat at the red loading screen with the dots spinning in circles. I force shut it down a few more times and retried it, until I finally just let it sit there and finish, hoping it would have a time out feature. Well eventually it booted to the login prompt after 4 hours.
New issue is that whenever I close my laptop to put it to sleep, and then reopen it it looks fine but when I swipe away the cool picture, theres no login prompt. It looks just like the screen when you press ctrl alt delete. So I told it to do a regular restart, and upon rebooting it was stuck at the spinning dots on the red screen for 3 more hours before it booted. I understand I can just turn off putting the computer to sleep when I close the lid, and just darken the screen. I've already done that, I'm looking for a more permanent fix.
I occasionally (but frequently enough that it is noticeable) get an unresponsive start menu. When this happens Win+P for display switching also does not work. The start menu starts working after a reboot and only after a reboot. Obviously this gets annoying because of all the windows I have to reopen. What I've tried when the start menu stops working:
1. sfc /scannow - this doesn't show any errors 2. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"} - the process finishes but the start menu doesn't start working anyway
I really hate restarting the PC when this happens.
I successfully installed 14257; however, I have nothing but problems with it. I cannot get Internet explorer to work. It freezes up, cannot use the back or forward arrow, cannot change addresses, and at one time I received an error message saying something about a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime error message. I looked in my installed application files, Visual C++ is there, I ran a 'repair' on it, and the repair reported it installed without problems. I also cannot open most of the windows applications (Edge, Feedback, etc) then I cannot open any applications as the 'window' button freezes up. I have been able to run sfc /scannow, which reports no issues found and all system files are intact. I am destined to scrap the insider preview on this computer. It works on my laptop but the laptop is too slow and cumbersome to use. while Internet explorer will not work, it does open and I can view web pages but only those that are already on MSN (my home page). I cannot resize IE, nor can I move it anywhere else on the desktop.
Update: I went to Microsoft, downloaded Visual Studio C++ for Windows 10 that didn't get installed. The install seems to have corrected my problems. I can now open IE, EDGE, Feedback, and my start button works again.
The computer goes to sleep after a period of inactivity, when mouse or keyboard is used the tower starts up but the monitor won't. I've gone into Device Manager and made sure mouse and keyboard will wake machine, but alas, no monitor. Must reboot every time.
I after installing windows 10 when I turn my PC on programs like sound-blaster flat out don't work, no sound. by restarted my PC everything works no problems? Other software won't work either I used sound-blaster as an example. Also Don't know if this is related but when I turn on my PC I boot real fast at windows log-in screen in seconds but after logging in windows takes for ever to load, just sits on log-in screen spinning for at least a minute. if I restart or not, some windows will never stop loading.

Has had this issue for a couple of days now where I right click on the Explorer app on the taskbar and click a recently visited folder and nothing happens, there is no window popping up with the location.
I'm using Windows 10 on my PC. I have been using it for about 3 months now and I regret installing it. There is so many problems with it. One of these problems is my disk drive will not play or run any disks I insert into it. In the file explorer, the disk drive is not present in the "Devices and Drives" section. However, It is still present in the Device manager.
Today I was going to power off my PC and went to start menu and when clicking on the power option it pops up the squeare but its empty. Has no options totally empty.
So today I tried to update to windows 10 from windows 7 through the "get windows 10" app on my desktop. Everything went well until reboots started. When my computer attempted to reboot it stuck at start up screen where you are supposed to either go to boot menu by pressing f12 or let your system boot like it should.
The tiles I've put on the start page for various apps (all resized to small) and arranged in groups are rearranging themselves randomly and resizing to medium each time I reboot. I can't find any reason for this. Also, is it possible to start more than one app at a time using the tiles? I've tried searching here and using Google but nothing at all comes up.. It's a clean install after upgrading.
This is on a custom-built machine upgraded from 8.1 Pro to 10 Pro. See screenshot. Left my computer idle for a while. Came back to that on the start screen. This also happened last night under the same seemingly random conditions. Unsure of what caused it, but logging out and back in made the icons reappear. While they were invisible, they were still clickable and functional.
I ran sfc/scannow (trying to diagnose a sleep problem) and it found irreparable files, and I ran it again in safe mode, and again, irreparable.
I ran dism and it couldn't access the source files. (Afterwards, I checked windows update, and it says that the computer is up to date, and the last check was at the time I ran dism!)
My laptop is upgraded to W10 and my pc is in progress. There are several problems. Questions are underlined. tldr version available below.
First, for my laptop. -After installation, it doesn't show my desktop. I need to use task manager to show it. Is this normal? -As it shows, the task bar doesn't work. I used the command for powershell and nice amount of restart, and it works. But, this problem appears again. I need to do the same thing again and i don't want this to happen anymore. How to prevent the taskbar error?
tldr : 1. Why my desktop don't appear after installation? 2. The taskbar doesn't work. After a hard work, it's fixed. But, it doesn't work again. Done the same thing and fixed again.
I've noticed after upgrading Windows 7 to 10 that Backup and Restore (from 7) remains available in the Control Panel. The app appears to work, but I tried running a backup, including system image, on a friend's system and heard that it failed. I haven't looked at it yet, but wondered if perhaps this app doesn't work properly in Windows 10?
Lenovo Thinkpad R500 - Touchpad scroll works in Internet Explorer, Firefox, File Explorer, Device manager and some other places, but it does not work in Start menu or any menu under Control panel, Edge or Windows Store - no matter what I have tried it simply will not Scroll - There is no doubt this a BUG.
I'm guessing it a bug in windows registry, but don't know where to find it. I have been through most that has to do with ALPS. Where the registry settings for the MS software scroll option are.
Touchpad/Trackpoint: ALPS UltraNav 2 - I have the newest driver from lenovo an ALPS don't have driver download available. But can't see how its a driver issue when it works in Device manager and the other places.
I tried getting MS support engineers at MS forum, to take a look at it, but they have this attitude that its driver issue and not Windows bug. Besides that, they never read the question before dishing out some standard solution like "try going to safe mode to see if the problem persist" - That is not going to work, since the drivers that control the scroll will not load in safe mode and then scroll will not work at all, a "real" technician would know that.
Scrolling right now in Firefox - If i go to Edge or Store, its not working.
After I experienced crash, which was caused I thing due to bad RAM which I replaced then,I couldn't repair windows to the state it was.I have problems with windows explorer,it reopens, almost every time I open WE and then closed it, it reopens again to the same folder. For example if I click in utorrent 'open containing folder' it will open it and then refresh it to the begining of the file list. When I close the window, it will reopen again.
Also, I cant force WE to remember settings for each folder, (like I used to before crash). In all folders, files are listed as 'date modified' if I try to change to different settings it will not remember, even if I click back and return to folder, it already change to default 'date modified'.Another thing, icons on desktop are largest, I can decrease the size of icons, but they resset to largest every time I reboot.
I tried SFC /SCANNOW, doesnt find any errors. Also scanned with kaspersky boot CD, no problems found.I was thinking to recover some files from old backup, and to replace existing files, but which files should I recover? What would be the registry keys that I should look for in order to fix this?
I think I have some registry conflicts. The battery/audio systray icons are no longer appearing, and the screen keeps flickering which causes applications to hang. Sometimes programs will even switch on their own.
If I use the browsers in full screen I don't have unresponsive issues. Though explorer still restarts periodically.
