Performance :: File Explorer Slow In Opening Folder With Shortcuts
Feb 10, 2016
Recently a change occured (after an update?). I have a folder containing only 6 shortcuts, linking to devices or to drives, connected to devices, in my home network. Opening this folder takes about 30 sec. It has to do with those shortcuts that link to drives, connected to devices, which are off.
Apparently, file explorer, when trying to present the shortcuts, also tries to get some info from those drives. After failing, file explorer nevertheless decides to present the shortcut after long waiting time. This effect has come recently in W10. In most cases, the effect is there, but in a few cases, the map is opening normally.

Ok so since upgrading from 7 to 10 file explorer has been a absolute nightmare! Everything was either incredibly slow, didn't happen or only partially load. After enduring this to this day I have decided enough is enough and started diagnosing by limiting the startup services using MSconfig.
After going through enabling startup services groups at the time and restarting the computer everytime! Eventually I found the service that was causing the problems with file explorer. The service is called Windows search and once disabled it restored functionality to file explorer. The search function in file explorer works but the search in the taskbar doesn't.
Step by step guide:
1. Hold Win+r to open run
2. Type msconfig and hit ok or enter
3. Click Services
4. Navigate to Windows search (you can sort the list in descending alphabetical order)
5. Uncheck tickbox
6. Click apply then ok
7. Select to restart now

When I try to drag shotcuts to it, it shows a no symbol (red circle with a dash through it) no matter which item I try to add to it. I had no problem adding anything in it every time I upgraded or reinstalled Windows 10 but after the last reinstall I'm having this problem. I suspect that this could get resolved by some registry hack.

Today,my laptop was awfully slow. When I booted it up it would say "Scanning and repairing D: drive 100%" but this didn't work with anything. When I went to "This PC" to see my D and C drives, my C drive was perfectly fine and it was showing how much GB it has left (___ GB free of ___ GB) but for the D drive it didn't show how much GB it has left. When I try to open it, windows explorer folder would not respond. The green bar which shows your progress of loading the folder (I don't know how to explain) would keep going and even if it reaches the end, D drive wouldn't open. Most of my games were in my D drive and now my laptop is really slow. It takes like 1 minute for chrome to start up.

Every time im trying to open a folder on my PC Im getting this message:
"This file does not have a program associated . Please install a program or , if one is already installed , create an association in the Default Programs control panel "
The only way to open the folder is to use right mouse button click and choose open, very annoying to work like this. The only strange thing I see is that when I klick right mousebutton on top it seems windows wants to open my folder with "cmd"...

Even after I got my new SSD it spedup everything but when bringing up the Download folder it super slow at adding up all the file details and icons. It's weird because this only happens in this folder while browsing in file explorer. Even my picture folder loads faster.

Where you open your jump list in File Explorer and then click on something like your Videos or Downloads Folder to have the jump list close like normal, but then nothing open? I also noticed that when I right click on the start button, I can't get any of the options on the menu to launch either.

So I just took part in the Windows 10 Insider Preview a couple of days ago, and I have to say, Windows 10 is a great step up from Windows 8, they did an excellent job so far. There's just one problem: File Explorer is extremely hard to use. Not only does the file explorer freeze all the time (even on folders with almost nothing in them), when it does freeze, it goes back to the top of the folder when it unfreezes.
What I mean is that I can be half-way down a 260-count file folder, like this:
Then it will freeze, and after it unfreezes, it goes back to the top of the folder, like so:
Doing simple tasks such as moving, copying, renaming, deleting and even scrolling and clicking causes File Explorer to freeze, sometimes even when it's idle!
And what's weirder is that the glitch doesn't happen when your opening a file for a specific program (say you click 'open' in Word and you get the 'Open' dialog box where you can pick a file).
I posted this over to Windows Feedback too, but I don't think it supports user comments, so I'm posting here to see if there's any fix. If there's any fix for this, let me know. It's been annoying me for a while now.

I installed Windows 10 last week as an upgrade from Windows 7, and the internet part is working good. But something with the file explorer didn't work. The Document, Pictures, Music, and Video files are still there, but the thumbnails load slowly, or not at all. If it means anything, there's a green bar that slowly moves across the top of the screen.

I have a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop. It's about a year old. Spec wise it is an i7-4710HQ, 12GB RAM, GTX860M dedicated GPU and I believe it has a 1TB 5400RPM Western Digital SSHD.
I've found that the boot time is slow. I can compare this to another Lenovo laptop I own, which is a Z580 (i5-3230m CPU, 8GB RAM, standard 1TB mechanical drive (unknown manufacturer)) which boots much faster. The last time I timed it, the Y50 took more than 90 seconds to reach the Windows desktop (set to autologin via changes to netplwiz) and the Z580 takes about 30 seconds. Furthermore, the Z580 is quicker to achieve a 'usable' state (ie. loading FireFox or something).
Both laptops came with Windows 8 (8 on the Z580, 8.1 on the Y50) and were upgraded to Windows 10. Both laptops were also upgraded from clean installations of Windows (to remove Lenovo's famed bloatware).
But more annoyingly than the boot time is the usability. On the Y50, if I right click a folder or file in File Explorer, it pretty much hangs File Explorer (loading circle icon for several minutes and a 'Not Responding' note). Eventually that'll stop and it will have done nothing.
Sometimes, if I then do it again it will actually allow me to right click and bring up the menu.
I have also found that any icon heavy folders, such as pictures or videos, cause File Explorer to have a complete meltdown and become sluggish to the point that the window needs to be closed.
I use StartisBack on both machines, and the Y50 does not display any icons on the 'More' section of the Start Menu. It also cannot find anything if you search for it. The Z580 has no such problem.
The Y50 has been scanned with both Avast Premier and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Premium. It does not appear to be infected.
I did perform a clean installation a few months ago (back when it was on Windows 8.1) - I cannot recall the exact reason, unfortunately. It wasn't the same issue I'm having now, but it was another usability problem that made me opt to do a clean install.
I am leaning towards doing yet another clean install, but I am also wondering if this could possibly be an indication that the drive has bad sectors or something and data keeps getting corrupted? Alas, as I say, I cannot now recall what prompted me to do the last clean install.

It starts at around 300MB/s but after a second it drops to 20MB/s. On Windows 7 it was usually around 100MB/s. This is for transferring to second hard drive. It's even slower transferring to USB drive, about 2 MB/s.

How do I get File Explorer to open in the last used folder? NOT quick access, just in the normal list of directories. (file folders).. I hate 'quick access', it slows everything down so much and makes all other folders invisible - I just want the normal file list visible and file explorer to open in the same folder as I was using before, in that list. Is this at all possible?

It works fine, but suddenly today the New menu disappeared from my click menu when I click on any blank place in a folder. What's worse, if I click the New Folder button under the File Explorer top menu, there is no response. In the end, I can only create new folders using command lines but not by the usual shortcuts.

In File Explorer I right-click a folder and select Properties. In the Customise tab, under Choose a file to show on this folder icon, I select Choose file. I navigate to my Pictures folder and select an image and then click on Apply and OK. And nothing happens, the folder is unchanged and has no picture on it.

In the last week, for one user only, folder operations, ie, create a folder, rename, or delete, take up to 30 seconds to complete. It is the same for all disk drives. I don't see anything in the event logs, but Reliability Monitor Report shows that Explorer stopped responding with the following:
Description
The program explorer.exe version 10.0.10586.104 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

When I open Windows 10 File Explorer from the Task Bar and choose Home, Share or View, the resulting ribbon covers the top few lines of the opened folder or files. How can I cause the ribbon to "bump" down the folder so that I can see the top few lines?

I recently got a new gaming laptop and it's been working like a charm, especially since I upgraded it to 10. I am having a problem with my libraries however - this laptop essentially has 3 drives; the (C:) SSD for OS and a few games, and two other normal drives (D: E:) ... one for my games, the other for documents and such.
Due to this, whenever I am in the file explorer and need the quick access to get to say, music, it goes directly the the file on the C: drive rather than where my music folder is actually at, and how to actually change it. My save location was changed to this drive, as well as manually going into the libraries folder in %appdata% and changing the settings to my E: drive, but this hasn't changed anything. This is both under quick access (which can be changed with the pins I believe), but also the drop-down for This PC. Right-clicking these folders for properties does show the folders under C:User[Name], but no way to change.

I tried to move my Documents folder to another partition, but stupidly specified E: instead of E:Documents. I moved it back to the default location and fixed the Quick Access link but can't fix the folder link in "This PC".
The icon is E: instead of Documents, and it points to the E: folder.
How can I fix this? I assume I need the correct registry entries. I tried the tutorial to remove/restore the folder, but the hacks only hide or show the folder in "This PC". I don't want to remove/hide it anyway.

In Windows 7 I could specify the start folder for Explorer by entering its path in the Target field of the Properties/Shortcut. This is now not possible as this filed is now grey (= read only) and cannot be modified.

About a week after Clean Installing Windows 10 from an upgraded version on my laptop, I noticed that i wasn't able to Create a New Folder anywhere, from Desktop to File Explorer Directories. Nothing! Even when i try clicking the "New Folder" Button in the Ribbon or pressing Ctrl+Shift+N it still won't work. In the Context Menu (Right Click), I can't find the "New" Button too. Is this normal for Windows 10 after being installed? Do i have to install something (maybe an update) for the "New" to appear in the Context Menu?

I just upgraded my Windows 8 OS to Windows 10 and it has left.Old.windows folder.with many included files on my Harddrive. I have already backed up and transferred all the files I wanted to keep from that old version and wish to delete that file and all that is in it. But it seems not to allow me to do that. I have tried numerous times with Admin privileges and it still will not allow be to delete.

I always like to have my Windows positioned in a certain way on my desktop, and even though some programs remain, a lot don't (i.e. 'This PC' & 'Documents' folder) never stay in the same place. It's always random when opened. Not a major issue I know. But annoying all the same. Is there a fix or workaround?

I don't remember how or when I made a change in File Explorer, but each time I call it up now, I get a slow moving progress bar in the bar where it identifies the location. I noticed there in the search bar it shows where it is going: "search (J:) Jack" as an example.
How do I stop this? It takes a lot of time, depending on the folder.
