Performance :: Hibernate Enabled But Not Working In Windows To Go?

Jan 11, 2016

I have Windows 10 Home installed and activated (as Windows to Go) on an external Samsung T1 SSD. I enabled hibernation per the instructions here: Hibernate - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums. However, every time I attempt to hibernate, the screen goes black but the PC never powers off and Windows never successfully hibernates. (Hibernation works perfectly on the Windows 7 installation on the internal SSD.)

Performance :: System Restore Permanently Disabled And Cannot Re-enabled

Aug 9, 2015

Since installing Windows 10 I've had a problem with System Restore. As you can see from the attached graphic, I can access the System Restore panel but System Restore for the Windows drive is turned off (orange box) and the means of restoring to an earlier restore point as well as Create are greyed out.

The ONLY thing the window allows me to do is to go to the Configure panel. When I get there I find that System Protection is disabled and I cannot turn it on. However, my system IS using some space (blue box) although I have a sneaky suspicion that has not changed since I installed W10.

My question therefore is really: how do I enable System Restore?

After writing the above I did a search in the registry for System Restore but there were only about six or seven references. I also had a quick look at Services and noticed that VSS was stopped. Following a search which revealed that System Restore might depend on it I started it. I then signed out and then back in again but I still can't get System Restore enabled.

Performance :: Cannot Restore From Back Up Short Names Are Not Enabled

Nov 15, 2015

I have a back up of files & folders that I come from my previous Windows 7 system (same machine - I upgraded to W10) that I am not ableto restore and I really need them. My system is the following:

HP Pavilion DV7-6b32US laptop/notebook
64 bit
16GB RAM
2 internal HD (1 is the original 500GB and the other is a 1TBdrive divided into two equal partitions in the NTFS format

The back up was done using Windows 7 built in feature/utility and I am trying to restore the folders with their files to my Win 10 but I keep getting the error "short names are not enabled on this volume" with the code 0x80070131. I have done my research which pointed me to answers pointing to this: "to manually enable 8.3naming after formatting you can use fsutil.exe from the command line: fsutil 8dot3name set d: 0 (d: is the drive partition on my 1TB NTFS driveI use for my data where I am trying to restore the files to. The only thing I haven't done is the formatting for two reasons, 1 - it is already formatted and 2 - I have a TON of data already on the drive that I cannot lose.

Performance :: Cannot Boot From Hibernate

Oct 13, 2015

This is on a fresh Windows 10 install, using a 60 GB SSD and a pair of 1 TB HDD's. No folders were moved off the SSD (C:) outside of what Windows supports. (That is, I moved all user folders to the HDD that I was allowed to, and installed all programs to the HDD that I was able to.)I enabled hibernation via the Power Options > System Settings section in the control panel. The C: drive has 25 GB free space; well more than enough for hiberfil.sys to work normally. When hibernating, the system appears to behave normally and hibernate as it should.

When booting from a hibernated system, the computer POSTs normally and then brings up the Windows 10 logo and loading screen briefly before powering off very suddenly. I have to turn on the system again, and when I do, it boots normally but the hibernation state is lost.I've attempted disabling fast startup, which seems to have no effect. I've updated my video drivers to 15.9 beta, but I recall this being a problem on 15.7 as well. Full system specs are in my profile. This machine was running Windows 7 in the past before upgrading, but I had to run a fresh install of Windows 10 after encountering some problems. (So the system is currently on a fresh install.) Google is also currently unable to deliver any relevant results for this problem. Windows Update reports being up to date.

Edit: Additionally, this has never been a problem on Windows 7. The SSD is in decent condition too, and has not exhibited any problems.

Edit: This problem was happening on shutdown and restart as well. I disabled fast startup, which corrected the problem when shutting down. Here's a summary of the behavior now:

Shutdown, no fast startup: Able to start up normally without any unexpected behavior.

Shutdown, fast startup enabled: Computer immediately shuts off just after reaching the Windows boot screen. Has to be powered on again and then will boot normally.

Hibernate, regardless of fast startup setting: Same behavior as above.

Conclusion: From my understanding, fast startup acts as a subset of hibernate. Windows 10 is not able to properly hibernate the driver(s) and/or some other system state. I might have to go through the drivers via process of elimination to see what's causing the problem.

Edit: I found the problem!

So despite no BSOD ever appearing, I ran the BlueScreenView utility to view the system dumps. Got the driver IRL not less than or equal error, found that it was from sptd2.sys; the SPTD (a SCSI bypass driver) I installed with Daemon Tools. I found a separate uninstaller for the driver and got rid of it; it's not something I need anyway. (Lots of Google searching will find you these utilities and solutions.)Would be nice if it showed an error or BSOD in the first place! I was about to go whack-a-mole on the drivers, but I would've never found the root cause.

Performance :: Where Is Hibernate Option

Feb 23, 2016

Hibernation is turned on, as shown by the presence of the hiberfil.sys operating system file; however, I do not see the word "hibernation" when I right-click on Start and select "Shut down or sign out."

Also, my APC UPS does not object to the absence of hibernate, which the APC software uses when the battery is getting low; the software notifies me if hibernation is not present. Hybrid Sleep is turned off in Power Options.

A few minutes later, I finally found, here, a tutorial that I understood,, and which worked.

Performance :: For SSD Disable System Restore And Hibernate?

Feb 10, 2016

True that if one disables System Restore, then an alternate backup software is needed. Yet, I'm wondering if this is something which you recommend if looking for improving SSD performance (exclude the risk of not having a backup)?

The other bit is, though SSD are faster for boot time, with Win10 it takes about 25 seconds from cold boot to be on desktop. In Win8/8.1, it took me 8 seconds with the same Intel 520 240GB SSD. With Hibernate enabled, the boot is faster than 25 seconds but not 8 seconds.

Hibernate Is Not Working When Push The Power Button?

Nov 25, 2015

I have set my Surface Pro 4 to hibernate when ever I press the power button and it has done so admirably since I purchased it. Now, for some reason, it will only shut down. I have double checked my advanced power settings and it says it is set to hibernate on both battery and when plugged in yet it still gives me the "Slide to shut down your PC" option when I push the button. The only changes I have made recently are to install Intel's Beta 520 drivers and to install the new cumulative update for 1511 that MS released yesterday.

Performance :: Maximize / Minimizing Windows Is Not Working?

Feb 23, 2016

I have a problem with my Win10 laptop and the best way to describe it (i think!), is that the minimize/maximizing of windows is not behaving as expected.

For example: sometimes I am unable to maximize a window properly, it seems to maximize, but not come to the front of the open windows. so if I have a browser open, and try to maximize MsWord, the word window maximizes, but sits behind the browser so I then have to minimize the browser.

ALSO sometimes even this doesn't work as for some reason a window will change its position to off the screen so the only way to maximize it (without ending the program and re-starting), is to hover over the taskbar icon, right click the needed window and hit maximize.

Windows Will Not Shut Down / Hibernate Or Sleep

I had problem dual booting win7 and win10. After many attempts I was able to dual boot.

But in the process, I deleted "system reserved" partition. So windows want start. I performed start up repair and it solved the problem. After that I reinstalled win7 ultimate which create "system reserved" partition again.

But the problem is hardware wan't shut down, hibernate or sleep. Windows shut down properly, but hardware remains active. I have to hard shut down it by pressing button.

Laptop model: HCL ME ICON L 1015

System Event log:

Superfetch Enabled Or Disabled

Mar 16, 2016

I know its a rule of thumb to leave it disabled if running an SSD, but I'm confused since I have both an SSD [ C: ] ( which serves as my boot drive ) and an HDD [ D: ] where I store the rest of my files.

Since there is no option to disable it only for one drive ( Which if there was i would disable it only for the SSD ) Should I just disable it altogether? or would that be a bad idea. Or is there any way I can disable it only for the SSD [ C: ]

How To Copy Files From PC To OneDrive With No Syncing Enabled

Feb 10, 2016

Windows 10 OneDrive seems to only want to operate as your primary file storage repository with your PC being a potential backup for OneDrive. I do not want to use it in that manner. How do I use OneDrive to simply copy selected files and folders from my PC to OneDrive without any Syncing enabled? If I deselect 'Sync files and folders' in OneDrive settings, it seems to disable the OneDrive link in File Explorer. Ideally I would like to have a backup setup to sync OneDrive with my PC so that OneDrive mirrors my PC...not the other way around. how to copy files from PC to OneDrive using File Explorer.

Performance :: Working On SSD (C) And Saving On HDD (D)?

Mar 5, 2016

I have a 2TB HDD which served as my primary (only) drive, until recently when we added a 500GB SSD. The plan was to use the SSD as the primary drive (C: ) and the HDD as the slave drive (D: ). I have reinstalled Photoshop CS6 onto my SSD and I planned to continue saving my files onto the HDD, however it continues to display this message whenever I try:

I tried changing ownership as suggested here: Windows 10: You don't have permission to save in this location..... and here: Owner of Files and Folders - Change in Windows 10 and it seemed to go as they said it would... but I still have the same problem.

Am I able to operate programs through C: and then save them on D: ?

Performance :: SFC Not Working And Neither Is DISM

Nov 15, 2015

I have a very old laptop, but despite the age it has worked relatively fine for my needs with just an HDD change. I bought this at the very end of Vista lifespan with an almost immediate Win7 upgrade offered. I then skipped Win 8 totally, but rolled a Win 10 when it came, and it has been working well. But you get the picture. This machine is old.

Onto the point: I'm getting an occasional fan rev up, with the CPU at 100%. The process is Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted). Recently, I also lost all sound on the computer, which chkdsk /f /r was able to salvage. I have a feeling these might relate to a same problem.

I researched, and found out that sfc /scannow will work. OK. It starts the verification process, but fails at 18% saying corrupt files exist. When I export the sfcdetails.txt from the log, it does not really report which files are corrupt so as to replace them. 00000e22 [SR] Beginning Verify and Repair transaction and then the logfile ends.

Because I cannot complete SFC, I'm told to run DISM, and that is how I ended up here. When I run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Image version 10.0.10240.16384
At 20% an error 1726 with remote procedure call failed.

So I go to dowload the ISO and mount it. It will then give me the .esd

So I'm having my fingers crossed while running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:F:SourcesInstall.esd:1 /limitaccess
