Performance :: Laptop Keeps Freezing And No Response
Nov 3, 2015
My laptop keeps freezing and nothing responds. I start task manager and nothing is running it reports! I can't even power off except fordoing ctrl alt delete and restart it. It's becoming an everyday occurrence. I am thinking in going back to windows 7. I wish Microsoft would have used 7 as a model to make another OS. In my opinion 7 is the best OS that Windows has made since XP. Is there anything I can do before I do a full reinstall? Can I use an Acronis image of my old c drive on my old laptop? I think it's a definite no, but I won't know until I ask.

When I have my webcam security software running all day (12-hours), the laptop runs fine. But when I shut the software down and then leave the laptop idle, it locks up.
It also happens when I start the laptop up and just leave it sit idle. So far, there's no specific amount of time where the laptop will lock up. Sometimes it's been within 30 minutes or it could be several hours (maybe update is running). But it freezes every single day when just sitting idle.
This isn't the kind of lockup other people are reporting where they're still able to move the cursor, etc. I'm talking complete lockup. Time, mouse, keyboard. The entire screen is completely froze and the only thing that resolves it is a restart.
I have this laptop:
Amazon.com : Dell Inspiron 11.6-Inch 2 in 1 Convertible Touchscreen Laptop, i3147-3750sLV : Computers Accessories
I've checked my power options and I'm running in performance mode with everything disabled. That means nothing is slowed down or shut down while the laptop is running.
I've also checked every event in Event Viewer and there's nothing anywhere in there that would point to a possible cause.

I have an HP Pavilion 500-123a PC running Windows 10 which has been freezing and crashing frequently.I have attempted several diagnostic and fix options about which I have posted to this forum before, though the difficulty thus far is unresolved. In particular sfc/scannow does not complete; halts at 56% with the message Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
I also attempted a Repair Install using the Media Creation Tool iso file. This was initiated in the administrator account (PC has two accounts) and got to 97% when it failed with the error message We couldnt install Windows 10, The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during PRE_OOBE operation error code 0x8007002C-0x4001E.The diagnostic software PC Health Advisor only came up with 2 registry issues, without specifying further. The Dism tool was OK however reporting. The component store is repairable. The operation completed successfully.Given that the PC is still freezing/crashing at this stage I am perplexed regarding how to arrive at a diagnosis and fix and, again,

Yesterday my laptop running windows 10 started freezing randomly. Everything seems to be normal when suddenly computer doesn't react any more for few minutes, then works perfectly well again. It's quite hard to find the cause. Only thing I have noticed that when it freezes, disk usage is very high. Could this be my cramped desktop (basically no space left) ? I haven't installed or downloaded any torrents lately. This week my laptop was mainly used for heavy browsing and projecting continuosly for hours, some powerpoint and audiocity usage. Also my windows partition is low on space (20GB left).

I've been trying to fix this for a while, but I have had no luck. My sister for her birthday got a new laptop (Dell Latitude E6420 Intel i5 2540m at 2.6 ghz). I did the free Windows 10 upgrade for her, and when the computer is starting from a shut down, it goes to a black screen with the mouse, and the mouse is frozen. There is nothing I can do but hold down the power button to shut it down.

My new custom desktop build is around one month old now. I am experiencing issues while gaming, for example AC Syndicate.
Sometimes I get an BSOD, but thats very rare. Also, the BSOD is freezing as well, so Windows is not even generating dump files. It only happened one time. That one time I collected the dumps to start a thread here: New Custom Build - BSOD within Games - Windows 10 Forums
But as BSOD crash analyst axe0 said, without dumps we cant analyze anything... What has been done?
- Reformatted PC, then I thought the issue is solved, but it came back...
- All non-microsoft services are disabled
- All startup entries are disabled
- Memtest ran around 12 hours, no issues
- Used HWMonitor to check temperature while gaming and freezing, no heat issue detected.
- Ran Furmark around 3 hours, no freezes...
- Replaced GPU, no changes...
- BIOS is up2date, but there is a new BIOS which I tried to install, but BIOS said "cannot read file"
ASUS
--> Currently running on v1104, published on 2016/01/14
--> most up2date BIOS is v1105, published on 2016/01/20 - not able to install it

Just to preface this I have not received a BSOD when this happens so I hope I'm still posting this in the correct location. However my laptop just freezes completely and I have to do a hard shutdown (holding the power button until it shuts off) whenever I wake my laptop up from sleeping or even when I cold boot it.
I have checked Event Viewer and I see that I have a couple of recurring errors, the first being:
"DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service lfsvc with arguments "Unavailable" in order to run the server:
{08D9DFDF-C6F7-404A-A20F-66EEC0A609CD}"
Wit the second being: "The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start."
However I am able to boot into safe mode just fine, even safe mode with networking and everything behaves normally. I have tried a clean install as this started happening after doing the upgrade from Windows 7 so I figured a clean install would clear up the issue if it was an issue with it upgrading.

Background: For the past few weeks or so I was on W8.1 on my SSD and Arch Linux on my SSHD. However now when loading up Arch I get a { DRDY } error presumably on the SSHD, and W8.1 crashed very soon after logging in. I noticed that sometimes that the computer does not freeze until I open up a game (Total War 2). TW2 had been working fine previously. I would go ahead and reset/refresh my main W10 drive but I'm not sure if that's the issue. I have never gotten a BSOD just a freeze then sometimes black screen with a mouse.
What I've tried: I consistently virus scanned with Malwarebyte's and Defender to find nothing.I hoped upgrading to W10 would fix the issue, but it did not./sfc scannowSMART check (no issues)check Task Manager/used Proc Explorer (or variants) can not see cause of disk usage spike
What I believe could be the issue: I want to say the drives are failing, but I'm honestly dumbfounded.I've read it's possible to the SATA cables.
Tried creating another user account, and so far no issues with the new account. Also added some logs, if more are needed I can add them.
TW2 crashed it again

Have upgraded to Windows 10 and now have an annoying issue (to me) in that the response time to download files from my portable USB 3.0 HDD's in File Explorer has increased significantly from when I was using them with Windows 8.1 although the read/write transfer rates have not changed.
This is more noticeable when the directories are large ie above 50GB. When using the same HDD's in windows 8.1 the response time appeared to be immediate with all the file details appearing instantly on the screen and of course with no annoying "Working on it" message appearing to fill in the time.

I just upgraded to Windows 10 and skipped the sign up process at the beginning but now when I try to sign up to my Microsoft Account it shows no response when I click it. I haven't been able to use cortana or download anything from the store because it shows no response when I click it. Whenever I try signing up for cortana a black screen pops up for a millisecond everytime I click on it but nothing happens. I can't even make the sign up dialog box appear.

I have an aging laptop that I put an SSD into in an attempt to make it more useable. It is an older Compaq Presario with 2GB ram, and I am running Windows 10, 32 bit. When I go to the hard drive properties and click on the "tools" tab, and then click on the "optimize" button, under the "current status" column it gives "Optimization not available". I have read similar threads in this forum and online, but none seem to exactly apply to my situation, so I have not been able to fix this. I do not know if the TRIM function is not available because my system is old, or if there is something else going on that may be modified to make it work.
I also have another old laptop that is just slightly newer than this one, also with Windows 10 32 bit, and the same model SSD works in that system without this error message. If there is nothing I can do about it, then I will have to live with it. But if there is some workaround to get the optimization working, then I would like to fix it. I have run the administrator command fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify and it comes back with a result of "0". what the bottom line impact is if I cannot get the trim optimization working? How big of a hit is it to performance? Is it something I can do on a regular basis with a utility instead?

My laptop's CPU usage hit 100% and stayed there, and the fan came on even though the CPU and HD temps were normal (CPU 44-47C, HD: 39-42C). Any thoughts on what happened? Restarting seems to have fixed it, at least temporarily. I'm doing a virus scan, and I'm going to start going through the logs, but which of the vast number of logs I should start with.
NOD32 and MalwareBytes both say no threats, malware, etc.

Tried using DDU and it asked to enter safe mode, went to safe mode, it then said "insert bootable media" and I tried to select it from BIOS but I could never get to BIOS because my mouse and keyboard controls were dead. Nothing I've done (plugging, unplugging) has fixed this issue. How to fix this.

OK here's my scenario, I have successfully used Macrium Reflect to create images saved on a 1TB external drive. I had 2 good images stored on it and tried to put 3rd image on the same drive. Please note that I have used one of save images to restore the system after replacing the failing hard drive. The create image process runs to what I think to be the very end then comes up with msg: "an error has occurred, Please see the history log for more details"
I could not find this history log, but figured maybe there was not enough space on the 1TB drive to completely write the image file. On my next attempt to create the image, I used a brand new 3TB external drive and it fails the same way. I have attached a photo of the error, where the history file is? I have left laptop up and running after clicking ok, did not want to risk losing the history file by booting back up. BTW, on the 3TB external drive it did create a temp file named xxxxxx.mrimg.temp with size of 0 kb.

When I put my laptop to sleep and then attempt to wake it up, it will power on (going through the boot up screens) instead of just waking up, thus causing me to lose any information open on the computer.
I have tried a few things to try to wake it up to no avail:
sfc /scannow in cmd
unplug all usb devices before going to sleep/waking up
rollback graphics drivers
resetting power plan settings and power button settings back to default state
Is there some memory dump file to fix this?

Got a nice light small laptop(screen 14 inch - enough for travelling) which has a native resolution of 1080 X 1920 --much better than the usual 768 X 1366 - especially when viewing movies etc. The display is really a significant improvement over the bog standard 768 X 1366 and really noticeable also when typing word documents or reading text.
(For traveling etc the 14 inch size is far more convenient than the more usual 16 - 17 inch sizes).
However the windows standard texts are tiny (boxes, drop down menus etc etc). -- I fixed most of it by adjusting text size settings and display to 150% -- the start menu items still have too small text.
If I increase the display resolution to 175% things like file explorer fail to start when clicked and the screen refreshes periodically - so set back to 150%.
Any way to increase text size on the Start menu.
Funnily enough when you use the WIN+X key / right mouse click on start button the text sizes in that list are fine --it's just the standard start menu when you click the windows start button.
Running Windows 10 pro X-64 -- graphics driver Intel HD 520 latest version. W10 latest updates applied.

I am currently running Windows 10 preview build 10049 on my surface pro (1st generation). Ever since this recent update (and I guess another recent change I made was using a power cover instead of the original type cover) I've been having frozen programs while working on it. They're not intense resource drainers either. I was using it in class today with word, one note, PDF, torrent in the background, and a chat client in the background.
I usually always have these on plus more, but everything freezes up. I can open start, I can't shut down nor restart, can't close my applications (just says waiting for program to respond and loads forever), can't alt + ctrl + delete. I'm forced to do a hard reset by holding the power button. It's happened about 4-5x already. I have a Bluetooth dongle in the USB port for my mouse and a microSD plugged in, which is always there prior to windows 10
