Performance :: Monitor Turns Off After 2 Minutes Of Inactivity?
Aug 20, 2015
I recently updated from Window 8.1 to Windows 10. The upgrade went fairly well except for my laptop monitor turning off after 1 or 2 minutes of inactivity. I have changed all power settings to appropriate times. At times, normally after a fresh restart, my screen saver kicks in correctly. However, after a few times of working correctly, my monitor begins to turn off again.

I have three PC's all running the same OS setup but one no matter what I try after 2 minutes the display goes blank, move the mouse and the desktop is there! I found in link but for Windows 7 with the term called "System unattended sleep timeout" added to Advanced Power Settings" but cant find anything like this in Windows 10. And I do not know even if this feature is part of Windows 10 it could be something totally different.

I've disabled the screensaver and the auto sleep mode yet when I don't touch my computer for a few minutes it'll go into lock screen and ask me for my code to log back in. I've even set the "Don't show lockscreen" entry to active (in the sort of registry).
How can I get rid of this feature ? I don't want anything to show up when I leave my computer for a few minutes, I want nothing to move.

I have freshly formatted my computer, installed all the updates and drivers, I have also RMA'd my video card (which i thoroughly tested and found it works fine on other computers.) but I cant figure out why my screen goes black but the computer keeps running. I can hear my music still playing and I run a dual monitor setup but when my screen goes black both monitors keep bouncing around the "Analog / Digital" box and thats all i can see, i have tested the monitors on other computers and they work fine as well.

Ever since I installed Win10 the monitor has been turning on by itself between 3 and 5 am every night, or 3 minutes after login after a reboot if it is off at the time. Except on days immediately after a noticeable win10 patch. It is turned off physically, not by the system. Only having the system off or unplugging the monitor prevents it from turning on.
I have set my system to check for updates at 10am but that does not seem to affect the problem at all. I have tried looking through the event viewer for items at the time its happening but haven't found a good tool to sort by time.

This happened sometimes in Windows 8.1 and still happens in Windows 10. I went into settings and changed when to turn off monitor to never and put this computer to sleep to never so why does the monitor turn off after no activity anyway?

I've installed the latest insider on my desktop as it works fine on the netbook, and now the screen turns off after the boot screen, the computer doesn't hang and seems to show signs of working (HDD light flashing). The video card is OK. Once the screen came up after plugging a USB drive, and once the computer booted normally with screen, but now it doesn't.

I have 2 monitors plugged on my desktop PC running widows 10 pro. I'm facing a technical issue with one of them but cannot replace it for now. The problem on that monitor is that it turns off and on by itself randomly. Each time it happens, the resolution on the monitor that doesn't have this problem changes. This is very annoying of course. How to prevent this?

I didn't know where to put this thread, but because it has to do with system performance, I thought this might be the best place to post my issues with Win 10. Let me get straight to the point:Up-to-date Windows 10 install (ver 1511 OS Build 10586.36)I haven't tested it but it seems like when the computer becomes inactive after a period of time, the whole system freezes - the mouse isn't moving, the desktop remains static on the last windows that were there, the time remains static (it doesn't change), CTRL+ALT+DELETE doesn't work.
Only solution seems to be to a hard reboot. In all other aspects the computer works fine: no virus (as determined by up-to-date version of Free Avast AV), SSD runs super fast, computer reboots, shuts down and goes to sleep perfectly. It's just when I am working on the computer and get sidetracked and when the computer becomes inactive, the computer freezes.
System Specs (other relevant aspects of my system can be viewed on my system specs page):Custom Built: E6700 non-OC4 GB DDR2 RAMGTX 970 (up to date driver: 361.43) Is there some sort of log that I can call up to show what is causing this stall/freeze/hang-up?

When entering Sleep Mode the computer is turned off.
Performance indicates that Sleep Mode is set for 30 minutes which I have not used, but when I leave my computer and manually select Sleep Mode is when the computer is turned off.
I checked the network adapter for the "allow this device to wake the computer" and all were unchecked
How do I get Sleep Mode to go to sleep with a manual setting?

I updated to W10 and have had no problems and this one really isn't a big deal but it's got my OCD going. I have sleep set after 25 minutes and that seems to work fine. It comes out of sleep pretty well too. But, it seems that ovenight, the system shuts down on it's own.
I've looked at the logs and scheduler and it seems that the UpdateOrchestrator was set at 3:30 am so I changed that time to 6:30 PM and the system turned off overnight again.
So, I left it awake one night and it did not shut off. Tried again the next night and it turned off. I'm going to try to remove the schedule entirely but from what I've read over the last few weeks, it will create a new task again.
What UpdateOrchestrator really does despite all my googling and don't have this problem on any other PC so I'm wondering if it has to do with hardware. WhoCrashed does not report any crashes at all. Nor do the logs tell me anything.

For some reason, my disk, when i open my computer and at some other point, always spikes up to 100% for a few minutes.
This happens when :
at the start, Something called System and compressed memory always make my pc go to 100% disk usage. Later on, there are all those Service Host going up to 100% and something called RzStatsManager
When i open norton or when i download something new it also goes to 100%, each time I open google chrome too and Steam make the disk go to 100% at the start and every time i open it it goes to 20% and the system memory goes to 80%...
All these times, the disk spiked at 100% for a few minutes.
I disabled all my notification, each time i open my PC i disable Windows search and superfetch but it spikes up every time. What can I do?

I upgraded from windows 7 pro x64 to Windows 10 pro x64. Since the first time I upgraded, it's all good the first 10ish minutes, and then nothing works. If I open a new tab in Edge, that one doesn't load. If I click a link on an existing page, it doesn't load.
The windows menu shows up when I click it, but I cannot search anything in it.If I start a new application, it doesn't start it.Win-R does show the command runner, but anything ran there doesn't start (even cmd or notepad) (no matter which app, explorer, notepad, etc...).
Restart/Hibernate/Shutdown doesn't do anything.I have to force reset (hardware button) to be able to use the computer another 10ish minutes before it becomes unusable again.
I tried removing many services/apps at start-up, didn't work. Malwarebytes and panda antivirus didn't find anything wrong. Repair start-up / system didn't work. So I performed a clean install of Windows 10 (still pro x64).

Every time i leave my computer idle for 5 minutes, disk defragmenting starts acting up. It never did this on Windows 7, and its very annoying. This causes my fan to speed up and it stays that way until i give it some input.
I always put my computer to sleep when I'm done using it, and would rather defragment manually. I want to turn this 5 minute defragging off, but how?
normal use
after 5 minutes of no user input

For the last 3 weeks anytime I "restart" my hp 32 bit pc it takes 6 minutes and all the while the screen is black with a small blinking light in the upper left corner everything is fine after it finally restarts and if I shut it down and start it back it starts normally and in the morning when I first start it up it starts normally it just happens any time I restart it for any reason.

So i just upgraded from Windows 7 to Win10 a week ago and everything went smooth as silk. I will said this is the first time i can remember doing an in place upgrade, I always format and do a clean install about once a year but ive been busy so i took the lazy route.
Issue is i have my power settings set to None and my power options set to turn the monitors off after 10 minutes. I have it set to Never sleep. After the 10 minutes passes the monitors power off as expected but when i move the mouse or hit keys on my keyboard it takes at least 10-15 seconds to initiate the monitor power on. This was 1-2 seconds in Windows 7. Its pretty minor but its irritating as hell.

How to create a shortcut to the Reliability Monitor?

Since upgrading to Win 10, I have noticed that with most (but not all) system shutdowns and restarts, it result in a nice red X with the 'Windows was not properly shut down" Clicking on it gives no clues, just says "The previous shutdown at [time] on [date] was unexpected.
There is no other indication other than what the Reliability Monitor reports. I would not even be aware there was an issue. The PC starts as normal with no errors on every boot.

My system logs off automatically after 5 minutes or so of inactivity. I don't know where to look for to change this option. I am logging in using my hotmail at start up.

I'm using Windows 10 and I changed all of my When Computer Sleeps settings and my screen still goes black after about 30 seconds of inactivity. Not really sure why this happens because I changed all of the settings for the screen shutting off to never.

I installed 10 on three machines and one has a mind of it's own when it comes to sleeping. No matter how I set the power settings or screen savers if I get up and walk away from the machine it has gone into sleep mode when I come back.

My desktop monitors go to sleep after about a minute of inactivity no matter what I set sleep mode to do. I currently have it on "never" and it still sleeps to the lock screen. Extremely annoying. I talked to some others having the same issue but no one has a clue or has seen the issue discussed.

I've been using Windows 10 on my pc for quite some time now. There's allways been the option for lock screen on customization, but i've never seen it. I've recently found there are several ways to "lock" the screen on Windows 10 Pc (like using Windows+L).I also remember to read somewhere that usin lock screen reduces the lifetime of the ssd.I would like to know:
- Is there a way put the lock screen automatically, after 1 minute of inactivity (or 5) for example?.
-Is it true that using a lock screen would reduce the lifetime on the ssd?
-What are your personal recommendations about this?.
