Performance :: No Option To Refresh PC
Dec 25, 2015
I want to refresh one of my PCs. Online info shows that particular option. Mine does not. Only 'Reset', or restore to an earlier build, or Advanced Startup. However, when I click on 'Reset' I have the option of keeping my personal files or removing everything. Is that option specific to Windows 10 instead of calling it 'Refresh'? Also, it's telling me that since I upgraded from another version, I couldn't go back to it. Is it because it would delete my windows.old folder?

If I delete or move items in win 10 they stay visible in the folder until I refresh.
It was a minor issue to start with but it is now interfering with fast operation of using the OS. If you see stuff in a folder then you presume it is there! Trying to delete things that do not exist is becoming a recurring theme now.

Hibernation is turned on, as shown by the presence of the hiberfil.sys operating system file; however, I do not see the word "hibernation" when I right-click on Start and select "Shut down or sign out."
Also, my APC UPS does not object to the absence of hibernate, which the APC software uses when the battery is getting low; the software notifies me if hibernation is not present. Hybrid Sleep is turned off in Power Options.
A few minutes later, I finally found, here, a tutorial that I understood,, and which worked.

I just completed a clean install of Windows 10 Pro...all was going fine, but I wanted to run both scf and DISM...
If SFC was not able to repair some or all of the files there are a few options including a repair install from the OS dvd, and DISM (win 8 & UP)
DISM
If you are on win 8 and up you can (and should) run DISM if SFC found errors it could not fix
From an DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:X:elevated command prompt*
Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth . (please note the space after "dism", & "online" & "image")
If the repair is successful you may want to re-run SFC just to check.
[URL]
Have never had this issue before...but I can't seem to be able to direct DISM elevated command to a .iso file:
To run a system file check (SFC)
Go to start
Type CMD
Right click and run as Administrator
(called an elevated command prompt)
If you want to verify and repair the OS type sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and "/")
If you just want to check (verify only) the OS type sfc /verifyonly (no changes will be made using verify only)
If you get the error message "cannot find source files"you need to have an ISO file mounted and need to specify where it is located with the below command
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:X:* Where "X" is the drive letter where the ISO is located.* SourcesInstall.wim:1 /LimitAccessSimply change the "X" to the correct drive letter
If you do not have an ISO you can make one.* The instructions are here
*You may have to run this up to 3 times to fix all the problems
When you have finished it will say one of three things
Windows did not find any integrity violations (a good thing)
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them (a good thing)
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them (not a good thing)* If you get this message run DISM as described below..
I also have the DISM log file which I would be more then happy to upload:

When accessing certain folders e.g. folder with loads of movies (mkv)
The file explorer takes ages to show the files and the green progress bar at the top takes ages to load. All the movie thumbnails slowly start appearing...
In windows 7 this was kinda instantaneous

I've been suffering from the whole "start menu isn't working, here have this lovely critical error" issue for quite some time now. I've brushed it off as a nuisance and tried to ignore it, but it's really just starting to limit the functionality of my PC so I'm trying to get it resolved.
Most recently, I tried to reset my computer through Settings (keeping all of my files). It starts the process, reboots my PC to a screen that asks me to select the layout of my keyboard... but I've lost all functionality of my mouse and keyboard in the process. I can't select anything to get beyond the screen. I've tried another mouse with no success.

Before the update to windows 10 this morning I used to be able to right-click and a menu came up with refresh, back, forward, etc...
Now when I right-click the only options are select all, print, inspect element, and view source. The option to right-click and be able to refresh was very useful to me.
The website I'm using is an online electronic medical records website. If I click the refresh button at the top of the screen it takes me back to the homepage, when I really just want to refresh that one patient's chart to see if anything new was entered. It does the same thing when click F5.

Upgraded from 8.1 Pro a day or two ago, however still receiving the 0xC004C003 Error code, stating that the activation server has specified the key as blocked. Will it automatically activate when the activation servers are no longer overwhelmed (if they still are, that is), or is there a way to refresh the activation attempt?
Also, my Microsoft account has another 27 days left before the security details fully change, could this be the reason why it is not activating?

Running a one-month old clean Win 10 install.
I find that my desktop icons frequently lose their shortcut symbol (the little white square with curved blue arrow), or otherwise change. I haven't tried to figure out when or why this happens. It shouldn't. An icon, once placed, shouldn't change.
The fix is to right-click on an open spot and select "refresh".

I have my downloads folder sorted by "Date Added" (newest at the top) and whenever I download a new file, the file will always goes to the bottom (when I have the Downloads folder open as I click download). I then refresh the page and it goes to the top of the list, where it's supposed to be.
Is there a way to make the newly downloaded files go straight to the top of the list without having to refresh the downloads folder?

Whenever I empty the recycle bin or move a file there while it's empty, the taskbar icons refreshes. If I move a file to the recycle bin while it's NOT empty or skip it entirely by shift-deleting a file, this does not happen.

In W7 I could refresh the file list after deleting files using the view menu and the refresh option. W10 does not remove deleted files from view at once nor does it have a way of doing it manually that I can find. I can't believe it no longer exists.

I'm running a small, industry specific program in Windows. It runs fine on a LOT of Windows 10 installs, but on the occasional Windows 10 machines I have the following happen.
- The program loads like normal.
- The user is prompted to enter a PIN to enter the software.
- The software just sits there, showing no input even though the user has entered their PIN.
- If I right click on the taskbar, all of a sudden the PIN shows as entered.
- The user then presses the login button and again, nothing happens.
- If I right click on the taskbar, again, the software refreshes and the next screen is shown.
This goes on and on. The app will only refresh when the task bar has been right clicked.
Now interestingly out of the say 10 or so Windows 10 machines that we've had issues with, some of them can be fixed by running a Windows Update. Others can be fixed by running in compatibility mode. Some of them though, simply won't fix their behaviour.

I'm using the line recimg -CreateImage C:Refreshimage or some variation of that and I get "recimg is not recognized as an internal or external command"
I'm using command prompt as an admin. I wanna refresh my pc with a custom refresh image so I can keep my programs. Does this mean windows 10 no longer has custom refresh images as a feature?

I have Windows 10 installed on 2 of my 3 computers. A 2 screen video editing machine that I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 works perfectly - I open Windows Explorer, I either hold the mouse over the left part of a file name, or right click on top of a file name for the dialog menu to come and then click rename, either way I am then able to rename the file to what I want.
But I re-installed (after the successful WIN7 upgrade) Windows 10 over Windows 8.1 on my main 27" HP and like it did the first time whenever I open a Windows Explorer program - whether from the taskbar or from a shortcut - and do the same to rename the file (either hold left or right mouse) so the filename is highlighted and as I start to retype the new file name it just automatically refreshes and reverts back to the original file name.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but i have some problems with windows 10 since upgrade (I've had this problem since earlier build).
Everytime background changes, explorer will automatically refresh (or so i think)
For example, my i'm initially at the bottom of a folder like this notice the scroll bar is at the very bottom.
After my background changes, it will be dragged all the way back to the top like this . It's really annoying every time I navigate through folders with a lot of items. Is there anyway to fix this other than stopping the slideshow all together?

What I'm planning to do is upgrade my rig with an SSD, but I don't really want to lose my files. Is there a way to refresh Windows, and have the "refreshed" install and my files on a separate drive than what Windows was originally installed on?

Back with XP/7 and maybe 8 doing a format and clean install was the prefered way to install an OS or to fix errors
I have updated to win10 from 8 which carried over all my previously installed programs, but was considering a clean install via usb and reinstalling all the programs as i have had a few errors with programs starting and a few random bsod BUT in the past wk no real issues so i assume updated took care of it
So i kind of want to do a full format and recreate the partitions and then install, will i receive any benefit from this

Since doing a refresh of Windows 10 some of my menus or whatever are messed up. It is hard to explain and I searched but since I don't know what it is called I will post a screenshot.
As you can see the tabs on the top are not flat and look like they did from Windows 2000. I can't seem to get them flat. I tried changing themes and I even created a new profile but they are still messed up.

I tried to reset my laptop. In the process of resetting it shut down due to overheating. When I turn it back on, the logo appears but no loading bar shows up. It hangs there for a few seconds and then it restarts and keeps cycling over like that. I tried to do a hard reset by taking out the battery and plug, then holding the power button for 30 seconds. I tried doing a system restore. I also tried removing the ram to see if that would work but no luck.
Here's my specs:
- 2.50GHz 3rd generation Intel Core i5-3210M Memory
- 8GB DDR3 SDRAM (2 DIMM) Video Graphics
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M switchable graphics with 2048MB DDR3 and up to 1696MB total graphics memory
- Hard Drive - 750GB

I am troubleshooting an issue for a neighbor. When using File Explorer (or while on the desktop), if he tries to delete a file or folder, rename it, move it, etc. the open file explorer window (or the desktop) does not change to reflect the action unless he refreshes the windows (or desktop) by hitting F5 (or for the desktop right clicking and selecting Refresh).

I just installed W10. I am experiencing several of the issues posted by others - Defenders, etc. However, I have not seen these two issues.
(1) When I try to rename a file (F2) in Explorer, the file renames but the screen does not refresh and show that name. I have to exit the folder, then reenter that folder. This also is required if I "move" a file from one folder to another - including to the recycle folder.
(2)I was able to open Word without any problem. When I tried to open Excel, however, it froze ("not responding"). I reopened it in "safe mode" and it displayed a blank spread sheet. I keep my files on a USB drive (connected and read by Explorer) and Excel is defaulted to open to that drive. But in safe mode I need to use "Explorer" to access them. So, I click on the "My Computer" icon in Excel and ... "not responding."
