View 2 RepliesPreviously if I double clicked the shortcuts of Steam, Origin and Uplay while they were running instantly maximized their windows. Now if I double click them it takes a long time before they are maximized as if the computer is reloading them from scratch. I also have GOG Galaxy as a shortcut but it does not happen with that icon. What do you think changed?
The only thing that IO think might be related is that I disabled indexing of C drive but I later found that it was not a good idea and changed it back to indexing enabled.
This PC has been working for about 3 years or so and suddenly today it started lagging really badly. I have done a fresh install of Windows 10 (wiping the previous partitions) and it's lagging even before I install any drivers. The extraction speed on zip file was around 100-200 kB/s and periodically went to 0. Is this a hard drive failing?

View 1 RepliesI am unable to snap on my windows 10 machine via the keyboard shortcut (windows key + arrow of the diection of snap) because everytime I hit the windows button it opens the start menu. How do I access all the keyboard shortcuts that start with the windows key if it always opens the start menu?

Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard
Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck). When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
E.G.:
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up –Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )
This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.
In -Device Manger – Keyboards- The keyboard driver is dated 2006 so tried to update the driver but says I have the best driver software for my device is already installed. Noticed there are 2 entries for the HID Keyboard Device both are the same driver version. Maybe I should delete/uninstall one? Both (under event tab) , dated 310715 Device migrated, Device configured(keyboard.inf) and Device started (kbdhid). It was prob around this date I first started having probs.
Pressing Ctrl on hard keyboard highlights Ctrl on onscreen keyboard only whilst being pressed. Let go of the hard key, the soft key turns off.
Sometimes the 9 gets stuck and does 99999999999999999999999999999 but saying that I just restarted the machine and pressed the key -d- and it acted like a stuck 9 as in 999999999999999999999 not dddddddddddddddddddddddddddd.
I've NOT tried the following:
System restore (seems harsh)
Rolling back the keyboard driver (not sure how on win 10 )
Deleting the keyboard from System (not sure how on win 10 )
When installing programs most place their shortscuts in the Public folder instead of placing them in the user folder. What am i doing wrong? I never had this problem with Windows 8.
View 2 RepliesJust upgraded to windows 10 and on 7 I was using Ultramon, a super awesome multi-monitor program. Needless to say, ultramon doesn't work on 10 but 10 has some pretty great multi-monitor functionality already.
I've got two monitors and I have taskbar shown on both and buttons are set to show on taskbar where the window is open. What I'm trying to do is hide the Start Menu, Cortana search, and task view buttons on the non-primary monitor taskbar.
Also, I'm wondering if it's possible to change the Windows keyboard shortcuts? Trying to change the shortcut for switching between desktops to something other than Ctrl + Win + (Left/Right)
I can not access desk top short cuts to open files in office programs. They exist, i can see them on the desk top but do appear when i go to files.
View 2 RepliesI recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".
I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.
Recently a change occured (after an update?). I have a folder containing only 6 shortcuts, linking to devices or to drives, connected to devices, in my home network. Opening this folder takes about 30 sec. It has to do with those shortcuts that link to drives, connected to devices, which are off.
Apparently, file explorer, when trying to present the shortcuts, also tries to get some info from those drives. After failing, file explorer nevertheless decides to present the shortcut after long waiting time. This effect has come recently in W10. In most cases, the effect is there, but in a few cases, the map is opening normally.
I just received this new wintel box with dual boot android and win10, the android version works fine, however, windows 10 behaves strangely, I click for example on MS edge, it launches, if you hover over it on the taskbar it shows with the small window but there is no way it actually launches on the screen! all the applications behave similarly, after fiddling a bit, I could only launch windows explorer by right clicking on the taskbar and choosing win explorer the only application that launched and I could actually see and work with.
View 3 RepliesI always have to open these apps twice because they crash when I first try to open them.
I've tried running wsreset but it keeps happening.

Right so, I have been trying to create application shortcuts in the "all apps" of the start menu. I've had success with some shortcuts. Here is a screenshot, with an example of what I am talking. The following shortcuts are behaving as I want them to,The following shortcut is not behaving as I want it to.. it keeps pinning to start despite all my attempts to unpin it and recopy to the folder, they are all shortcuts to executable files. Why is windows handling some of them differently?
I just received a new Win 10 PC with a 500 Gb SSD for my primary drive (OS and programs) and an internal 1Tb conventional HDD for my data (library).
I would like to transfer my programs and files from my existing Win 10 PC to my new PC. My existing PC has two conventional HDDs -- both are 500Mb. The C drive has everything and the E drive is a clone.
Both the new and old PCs are running Win 10 Pro x64.
What programs do you recommend? I do have Macrium Reflect that may do the job. I'll be checking with their excellent support this week.
I think It started after I resubscribed to Kaspersky a few months ago. Most programs wont open or when they do its 10-15 min to do so. No mouse at times. Unable to acsess start screen on other files. Will get stuck in a restart/shutdown which I will then do a hard reset. After it comes back the issue remains. I am fairly capable of trying different things but have had no luck, chasing "fix's" So far I have tried the following:
- Uninstalled and reinstalled chrome
- Installed malwarebites and removed 144 "threats" had read Kaspersky and mw bites were competing for CPU so I uninstalled it. currently not on my machine.
- Viewed kasperskys cpu usage in task manager at the most for a moment is 23% typically 3-4%
- Contacted kasperskys support asking about its functionality within windows 10. they had my select an option in settings "concede resources to other programs
- Disabled Kaspersky "protection extension in chrome
- Reset winsock and restarted which worked for a day (yesterday) now back to same.
I have gone into settings in my Windows 10 and changed the default music player from groove music to windows media player. But when I click on music files, it automatically starts playing in Groove and NOT windows media player. I have restarted Windows several times with the same results.
View 2 RepliesEver since I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, programs, especially games, suddenly halt and the disk light comes on. This is especially annoying during games as everything halts on-screen until the disk light goes off. I was just playing Assassins Creed Syndicate and the dialog would go silent while the disk light was on. It's almost like Windows 10 is halting while a load is taking place.
I originally thought my games disk was beginning to age but this happens in IE, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc., which are on a different disk.Does Win 10 have a disk management issue? I just happened to think that my page file is on a separate disk from Win 10 and my games. Could this cause an issue?
Since 2 or 3 weeks when I switch on my notebook, after loading my desktop it hangs loading startup programs. When it hangs, I can't even shut down, I have to press the power button 4 seconds to shut down.It happened with my 3 notebooks, but it remains only in one of them. This problem remains in an HP EliteBook 8540w running Windows 10 Pro 64 bits. In this notebook I had uncheck the "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" when I installed Windows 10, because it didn't shut down properly.I don't know what to do, I tried SFC and DISM tool, both found errors but were unable to correct them.
View 5 RepliesI just did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 and upgraded to Windows 10. My issue is that the system is unresponsive, programs are not responding. I took a video but I can`t seem to find any possibility to post it here, so you can`t see what I`m going through. It is really annoying, and it`s just messed up. Multitasking hangs, shows programs in the background and what not... What to do?
I`m also thinking it is a memory leak, I have 25-30% RAM use after bootup....

Whenever I start Windows 10, early on in the boot cycle I get a Firefox Window. As the system continues to initialize the Firefox window slowly come to life, though sometimes not fully.
I've checked all the obvious places, Task Manager, c;usersuser_nameAppDataRoaming
I must have put this in for some reason but can't think of why / how.
I want to get rid of it. How to do so?
I have successfully activated hibernate mode (S4), yet whenever the PC is hibernated a shake of the mouse or the press of any key on the keyboard just wakes and turns on the PC. Needless to say I do not want this to happen. Hibernate (S4) works as confirmed by the fact that when it's waken up, the PC goes through the POST phase of the boot before loading W10. In addition a powercfg /a gives the following output
Code:
C:WINDOWSsystem32>powercfg /aThe following sleep states are available on this system: Standby (S3) Hibernate Hybrid Sleep Fast Startup
Sleep (S3) works too. Although it seems to have the same effects on the hardware (turns off the CPU fan), the waking up it's much quicker, without POST. In addition, here's the log from Windows event viewer:
Code:

In the UEFI BIOS all the ACPI settings are in order, as shown in this photo. Bios is updated to the latest version.
View image: WP 20151201 11 43 34 ProEnabling/Disabling Fast-boot and/or fast start-up changes nothingI tried also a different USB wireless mouse, but no changes. With a PS/2 mouse the PC does not wake up from hibernation.Switching the Logitech Unifying receiver between USB 2 and 3 makes no difference. The same mouse and keyboard do not turn on the PC after a complete shut down.
I'm facing a very weird problem with Windows 10 on my new laptop. Every time I boot up or even wake from hibernate, my keyboard repeat rate gets reset to the slowest setting. I notice this only when I start using word or email.
The weirder thing is, in the keyboard settings window the setting would always be shown as "Fast", but actually it would be slow. To make it fast, I have to drag it to slow and then to fast again.
Windows recognizes my secondary drive, a Western Digital, SATA WD5000AAKS 500 gig. However, anytime I access it the system lags, files freeze and it acts like it's being re-cataloged. I never had this problem prior to Windows 10, and my other computers have no problem accessing the secondary drive through the Home Group.
View 2 RepliesI have updated my ThinkPad Helix (1. gen) to Windows 10 as soon as possible, went well, no hassle except to find some drivers, but got them in a matter of days. Anyway, I didn't experience the improvement of performance, I expected, so I went for a clean install. Also because I couldn't get Office365 activated - a glitch, I read about several places, none with other solution than clean install of Windows. And I prefer a clean, virgin, fast and clutterfree installation - until I clutter it again ...
Installation went well, took a little over two hours (with cleaning of SDD), chose to keep no files (but had to start over again, because I wasn't satisfied with the folder structure and user names). But now, up and running again, I'm experiencing lags and holds, when primarily, opening at website with Flash or other things going on, like video or a chat window. The cursor reacts with seconds delay, hardly to control, have to use my fingers to close the browser again. And it's the same, regardless using Firefox, Chrome (this is worst), Edge or IE ...
Closing the window or tab with the problematic page, the computer responds quickly as i would expect it to...
Tried to disable the native flash-player in Chrome, didn't work. Went from Chrome Canary back to regular Chrome, didn't work.
Also I had CPU or GPU (onboard) suspected, but installed all relevant Intel management software, got Lenovo System Update and got system specific software and drivers, but left out the bloatware.
I can vaguely remember same problems, when I went from W 8 to 8.1, but can't remember the problem and the solution. I think, I did a reset, but not sure. Another clean install? Took me hours, so would like to avoid this...
This is a very annoying problem I have in Windows 10. It has been like this for 2 weeks and after a lot of searching and posting in forums, I haven't got any fix whatsoever. I'll explain my problem:
If I open This PC (for example) icon on my desktop, all of my RAM and CPU will be used and it will freeze my Windows for 20 seconds or so. The same applies to all the folders I try to open. When moving a 100MB folder, it uses almost all of my RAM and disk. I have tried the following commands but none worked: sfc /scannow, chkdsk and DISM.
I have a HP Pavillion P6-2006pt desktop.
