Performance :: System Freeze After A Random Period Of Inactivity

Jan 10, 2016

I didn't know where to put this thread, but because it has to do with system performance, I thought this might be the best place to post my issues with Win 10. Let me get straight to the point:Up-to-date Windows 10 install (ver 1511 OS Build 10586.36)I haven't tested it but it seems like when the computer becomes inactive after a period of time, the whole system freezes - the mouse isn't moving, the desktop remains static on the last windows that were there, the time remains static (it doesn't change), CTRL+ALT+DELETE doesn't work.

Only solution seems to be to a hard reboot. In all other aspects the computer works fine: no virus (as determined by up-to-date version of Free Avast AV), SSD runs super fast, computer reboots, shuts down and goes to sleep perfectly. It's just when I am working on the computer and get sidetracked and when the computer becomes inactive, the computer freezes.

System Specs (other relevant aspects of my system can be viewed on my system specs page):Custom Built: E6700 non-OC4 GB DDR2 RAMGTX 970 (up to date driver: 361.43) Is there some sort of log that I can call up to show what is causing this stall/freeze/hang-up?

Performance :: Hard Freeze When Idle For A Short Period

Nov 25, 2015

It seems to have started after a recent Windows update, but I'm not sure exactly what specific element has screwed things up for me and it may have taken a bit of time for me to notice the problem due to the nature of it. I wouldn't know when to roll back my system to even if I was willing to try, and I'm not at this point.

If I leave Windows 10 alone for more than a few minutes, it freezes. This happens without fail and it's consistent. Any more than five minutes give or take a minute or two and it's frozen hard and requires a hard reset. Ctrl alt del doesn't work, alt tab doesn't work, nothing but the power button or the reset button on the case has any affect.

There is no error message, there is no spinning wheel mouse icon, the mouse pointer doesn't move. It's just frozen and no input does anything. The screen just has a still image of whatever was displaying when it happened and audio is also dead, no system sounds or anything. There was sound once, but it was when I had a game running and left it too long, and it was just that locked up audio buzzing sound. It's a hard lockup of my system and not just the video getting stuck.

It also doesn't matter if something is running. If I have a video or game running, it still happens. As long as I'm not actively inputting something with an input device such as the keyboard, mouse, or a gamepad it locks up. If I pause a game to go get something to eat it's frozen when I come back, if I'm watching a video and get up to go to the bathroom it's locked up when I get back, it doesn't matter if I pause whatever it is or leave it running.

If I'm doing something, typing, playing a game, or whatever, it will run for hours uninterrupted. No problems whatsoever. I've got Fallout 4 and I've played for several hours without any problems as long as I'm sitting there and actually playing the game.

It's like the PC is trying to go to sleep or go into an idle or power saving mode from a lack of input and is crashing hard as a result. The problem is I've disabled everything that would do that.

I'm running Windows 10 x64 Home edition. I have an i7 3770k, 16Gb of Ram, two Radeon HD 7970s in Xfire [doesn't matter if this is on or off], and my boot drive is a SSD. It's not a new system and Windows 10 has been running fine on it for several months now.

I've already disabled all screensavers, there are no scheduled tasks or updates screwing with anything. They all happen in the middle of the night and nothing is pending. All my drivers are up to date, caches have been cleared, and everything runs fine as long as I'm there and active. The usual suite of common updating software such as adobe and virus definitions are also up to date, so that isn't it either.

I have already disabled shut downs and sleeping in the power settings. Every power setting has been adjusted so that my PC never shuts down on its own and was already set that way to begin with. I've double checked and everything is still set the way it should be. I've already turned off Link State Power Management in all power settings. That isn't it either.

I do have AMD's new Crimson drivers, but this was happening before I installed them. That's not the source of the problem. I installed the new driver in the hope of maybe fixing the problem and it had no effect on it.

I've scanned for viruses, malware, and adware. My system is clean.

My temps are fine, all system monitors show a clean bill of health and no unusual activity spikes in my hardware. Task Manager, processes, and services don't show any extra or unusual programs running. Nothing is out of the ordinary when this happens outside of there being no input for a bit.

There are no error messages popping up at all. No BSOD or indication of any problems outside of the freezing itself. It just locks up suddenly and once it does no input does anything but a reset using the tower's power buttons.

Microsoft Surface Book Random System Freeze?

Oct 26, 2015

I have read other threads on Win10 freezing after upgrades but they are very different than what I am experiencing. Just got the Surface Book this morning. It is the i7, 256 Gb hard drive, 8 Gb ram version. Without installing anything the system randomly freezes. Does it more often if using the stylus. The only way to recover is a hard reboot. I turned off BitLocker and reduced it from every few minutes to maybe 1x per hour. Looks completely random. I also changed to local login and appeared to reduce it more. Can actually use the stylus some now. I have downloaded all the updates. After reading all the problems with Win10 freezing I am wondering if it is an OS bug and not a hardware problem. It has me seriously considering taking this back to the store. I am going to try turning the blue tooth off and try it that way but without the stylus this laptop is not worth the 2400 to me.

Random Freeze Up?

Oct 24, 2015

Sometimes it freeze up and I can only hard reboot it, mouse and keyboard doesn't works(audio sometimes works and sometimes it stops). I had this problem with windows 7 too. This problem is very random and I had it for a long time, it can happen every day in a week or just once in a few months.

I've run memtest86+ and didn't show any problems (I stopped it at 15 passes). Also checked my HDD and SSD but they were fine.

BSOD :: Random Freeze With Various Errors

Dec 5, 2015

I have random freeze and BSOD with various errors.

dumps as requested by stickythread are attached.

The problem was caused by the motherboard (BIOS P1.90), it seems that does not support 8X4GB ram modules. I have removed 4 modules and the problem has disappeared. I do not think that the memory modules are defective because memtest found no error.

Performance :: Monitor Turns Off After 2 Minutes Of Inactivity?

Aug 20, 2015

I recently updated from Window 8.1 to Windows 10. The upgrade went fairly well except for my laptop monitor turning off after 1 or 2 minutes of inactivity. I have changed all power settings to appropriate times. At times, normally after a fresh restart, my screen saver kicks in correctly. However, after a few times of working correctly, my monitor begins to turn off again.

Bizarre Monitor / System Freeze

Feb 23, 2016

I'm not sure where to post this so I thought I'd start here. As part of my office network of 4 computers I have a 2013 basic Compaq desktop computer that I upgraded to Windows 10. This computer remains on all the time and I sometimes remote into the computer using Teamviewer. About once a week the computer will disappear from Teamviewer as if it was shut down. The computer is still on but the screen is blank and neither the screen nor the computer will wake up as if it was in a sleep or hibernate state.

Now here's the bizarre part: if I unplug the power cord from the monitor and plug the cord back in, the monitor turns on and the windows login screen immediately appears. I can login and it looks like the computer is starting up again even though it wasn't shut down before.

Whole System Freeze - PC Restart Button Does Not Work

Feb 11, 2016

Since building my new Desktop PC and installing Windows 10 Pro I have had a rather worrying issue, it has happened about 3 times since January. On each occasion I am doing simple things with the PC nothing taxing on the CPU etc... Suddenly I go to move the mouse and it will not move I assume the mouse is disconnected, but my keyboard does not produce any results either I cant be USB related as the keyboard is a PS/2 port connection.

What is stranger still is that the reset button the the PC tower does nothing, I have to resort to holding the power button down until the whole device shuts off. The reset button does work though normally it only stop functioning when I stumble across this issue. I hate restarting the PC like this because I am adamant it is not good for the lifespan/integrity of the SSD.

My PC specs are:

Intel Core i7 6700K (I do not over clock)
Gigabyte GA-Z170 - Gaming 5 Eu Rv 1.0
Corsair Vengance LPX 4x8gb Configured RAM
Samsung SSd 850 Pro - (OS Drive)
Windows 10 Pro

Performance :: Random 100% Disk Usage

Nov 27, 2015

Since I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 (who knows when, within the week of first release) I've had a plethora of issues, and recently I found the source of the problem. My computer spikes to 100% disk usage randomly, even with nothing open and will suspend all applications on the computer. A couple of random things can set it off (sometimes when I open the "Search the web and Windows", open an application, Ctrl+Alt+Del, and ALWAYS when I boot my computer)

I've tried every. single. thing. that I have seen on the internet including but not limited to: superfetch, registry stuff, Unistack thing in task manager, Windows defender, uninstalling programs, defragmenting my 1TB Western Digital HDD even though it says 0% fragmented, cleaning up my HDD, checking if my HDD died which it hasn't, and updating my drivers, stopping all startup programs, disabling unused Windows apps, though nothing has seemed to fix the problem permanently. I also used to get this "Display driver AMD has stopped responding but has recovered" though I edited something in the registry and it doesn't show this anymore but I still experience the same problem. I'm quite fed up with this, and I'm thinking about buying Windows 7 in an attempt to downgrade.

Performance :: System Process Reading Disk 100% And Making System Very Slow

Dec 19, 2015

I found out that the hard disk is 100% utilized. In Task Manager, the process that utilizes the disk the most is ESET Service. If I open Resource Monitor there are many instances of the System process that are reading the disk, not writing it. I have two partitions on my disk - one for the system and the other one for data; the extensive disk reading is done for Pictures (I assigned a folder with pictures, about 140 GB in size, to the system My Pictures folder) on the data partition.

I am not running any tests in the ESET Endpoint Antivirus software and it seems to me that the high disk activity starts when I do not do anything and just e.g. browse Internet or look at something. So, it feels like Windows is doing something, but what it is and how I can influence it. If it were disk optimizations I think I should see also disk writes, not only reads. Could it be that Windows is doing something automatic with Pictures, Documents, etc.?

I wonder what is going on - I dislike the fact that something is going on with the hard disk, making is 100% utilized and making other work very slow and non-responsive.

BSOD :: Multiple Random System Lockups Requiring Hard Reset

Sep 5, 2015

I recently built the PC I am currently experiencing this issue on. I have built several gaming PC's in the past, but never have I experienced any consistent issues such as this.

The PC Speccs are as follows:

CPU- AMD FX-9590 Vishera 8-Core 4.7GHz Cooled with a: CORSAIR Hydro Series H75 Liquid CPU Cooler 120mm
MOBO- ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+
GPU- 2x EVGA GeForce GTX 970s in SLi (4GB GDDR5)
Power Supply- COOLMAX CUG-950B 950W ATX12V v2.3 EPS12V v2.91 SLi Certified
RAM- 16GB HyperX DDR3 SDRAM
HD(s)-1x Western Digital 1TB 32MB Cache, 1x Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache
OS- Windows 10

I built the PC in mid February of this year, 2015. This particular issue started happening consistently (daily basis) in June. While gaming, my PC will all of a sudden, at random, lock up completely. I try Alt+f4, Ctrl+Alt+Del, and Alt+Tab, but nothing responds. The PC just stays like this until I'm forced to do a hard-reset at the tower.

I've tried just about everything I can think of to resolve this problem. I thought since it only happens when I game that perhaps it's a cooling issue and my system is overheating. However, I've ran a slew of programs to monitor heat and none show anything abnormal.

Many articles suggested malware or spyware might be causing the lock-ups. So I've chosen to clean my system daily but the issue still persists.

At one point I was able to eliminate the problem completely for nearly 3 weeks by changing my power settings from 'Power-Saver' to 'High-Performance'. Unfortunately, the issue came back. Asus Suite II regularly reports power fluctuations which leads me to believe it might possibly be a failing Power-Supply but I'm just not sure.

Windows Event Viewer lists a myriad of different application and system errors each time it happens. Recently however, it is always showing errors from Microsoft.Windows.Store, DistributedCOM, and Service Control Manager, all coinciding with the exact time the system locks up and becomes unresponsive.

It's worth noting that this system started out running Windows 7 Home Premium and just recently upgraded to Windows 10. The problem existed regardless of OS.

Drivers/Hardware :: Mouse And Keyboard Stop Working After Long Period Of PC Being Shutdown

Jan 19, 2016

I just recently updated. I then created a boot disk and performed a clean install. I use a Razor Black Widow Ultimate keyboard and a Logitech G9x laser mouse. I can reboot, I can shut down and restart and everything seems to work fine. But, after leaving the pc off all night and start in the morning I have no mouse or keyboard. This has happened Saturday morning, Sunday morning and yet again today. Fortunately, I have Acronis backup of my install, so when this happens I just re-image the hard drive and start searching for solutions again.

I have the latest Logitech mouse drivers and running Razor Synapse for keyboard software.

The latest thing I have done is disable fast boot but have not had it shut down long enough to see if it fixes the issue.

How can I get rid of this feature ? I don't want anything to show up when I leave my computer for a few minutes, I want nothing to move.
