Performance :: System Settings For Default Programs
Dec 17, 2015
I have gone into settings in my Windows 10 and changed the default music player from groove music to windows media player. But when I click on music files, it automatically starts playing in Groove and NOT windows media player. I have restarted Windows several times with the same results.
I somehow messed up my max memory setting from 8196 to 520 in the system configuration under the 'Boot' tab. Every time I try to restart my laptop, it said bad_system_config_error. How to change back my max memory setting to default. Btw, I'm using lenovo y510p and my os is windows 10.
I just did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 and upgraded to Windows 10. My issue is that the system is unresponsive, programs are not responding. I took a video but I can`t seem to find any possibility to post it here, so you can`t see what I`m going through. It is really annoying, and it`s just messed up. Multitasking hangs, shows programs in the background and what not... What to do?
I`m also thinking it is a memory leak, I have 25-30% RAM use after bootup....

I understand, that 10 relies on reset/refresh, but disabling SR is a bit drastic. Especially taking into account, how many flaws are in 10 right now, I wonder how it made RTM.
I'm experiencing a problem with images attached to an email. Each time I click on an image to view it, I am presented with a menu asking me to select the default program. I check the 'default' box, I select Picasa photo viewer, and I see the photo.
But, I have to do exactly the same thing again, the next time I want to view an image. The default setting is not being saved.
I'm trying to add my own program (AkelPad) to the list of Default programs.I created and applied the reg-file, but the program still is not in the list.
Code: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREAkelPadCapabilities]"ApplicationDescription"="AkelPad - Text Editor" "ApplicationIcon"="C:Program FilesAkelPadAkelPad.exe,0""ApplicationName"="AkelPad" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREAkelPadCapabilitiesFileAssociations]".txt"="AkelPadText.txt"".ini"
[code]...
How to add my own program that doesn't appear in Default programs list?
In the past I have had to go around to each computer and set the default programs. Is there a way to create a batch file to set default programs silently for each user that signs on? Like we would like to have Adobe Reader DC, Internet Explorer, and VLC player be the default programs.
I'm using W10 and have Edge as the default browser (I also use Chrome and Firefox). Some programs are automatically opening in Internet Explorer such as when I open Google+ photos or when software updates and shows what has changed on its website. how to change this so it all opens up in Edge?
I have a PC with a 2 drive setup. Drive C: is system drive and drive D: contains all programs etc... installed on PC.When I go to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 I am not able to keep all programs and settings. I am only given the option to do a clean install.
Installed a chinese application earlier called Kuwo Music Player. I have been using this particular application for quite some time and today is the first occasion where I decided to give it a go on Windows 10 too. Then came the problem, I realised that the settings to change the system locale ( this is necessary otherwise the chinese characters cannot be displayed) is no longer where it was in Windows 7/8. I too couldn't find any useful results on the Internet. where I can find and change that setting, or any other working solution would do.
New Windows 10 Home Computer, set up using PCMover from Windows 7 Home Premium Computer. A few problems, of course, so far mainly applications that did not transfer properly, and those easily solved.
One problem however I don't understand, and, therefore, cannot fix. I've gone into the settings for default applications, some of which are constantly ignored. I know that they are ignored, as WinPatrol keeps notifying me of attempted changes. One such pop-up is on the screen right now, stating that a change for files with the extension .avi have been changed from the setting to use VLC media player to use Windows Media Player. I clicked on No, to reject the change, whereupon a new one, this time for .cab files popped up. I will reject it, and a series of such changes will appear and be rejected.
Everytime on my brand new computer i have to change the settings for the touch pad and click apply.. When i reboot the computer the settings are back at default settings.. Is there something i am not doing right..
I found out that the hard disk is 100% utilized. In Task Manager, the process that utilizes the disk the most is ESET Service. If I open Resource Monitor there are many instances of the System process that are reading the disk, not writing it. I have two partitions on my disk - one for the system and the other one for data; the extensive disk reading is done for Pictures (I assigned a folder with pictures, about 140 GB in size, to the system My Pictures folder) on the data partition.
I am not running any tests in the ESET Endpoint Antivirus software and it seems to me that the high disk activity starts when I do not do anything and just e.g. browse Internet or look at something. So, it feels like Windows is doing something, but what it is and how I can influence it. If it were disk optimizations I think I should see also disk writes, not only reads. Could it be that Windows is doing something automatic with Pictures, Documents, etc.?
I wonder what is going on - I dislike the fact that something is going on with the hard disk, making is 100% utilized and making other work very slow and non-responsive.
Edge resets to default setting after every W10 update.
Can MS stop this?
Favourites are gone, I have to run xcopy to add back. Google search is no longer the default search provider. It also offers to remember password which I disabled.
I have an Acer (Intel Pentium Windows 10, 64-bit) computer which I bought a few months ago, and created one 'user' (my name - say John) Suddenly this week when I logged in (as John) the only items on the desktop were the default programs installed with the computer; all my files were gone. When opening the browser, or windows media player, all my custom settings were gone and it was as if the programs were being used for the first time. The default program used to open files (e.g. the original program instead of windows media player) had all reverted also. The start button was/is also not working.
I then discovered my files are still there and accessible - to do so I have to right-click on one of the programmes on desktop and 'open file location' then I can use the left column to (through windows explorer) get to C drive then 'Users' then 'John' and I can access everything that way. Also, the keyboard settings have bizarrely changed ie shift + 2 gives the @ sign instead of quotation mark.I have Norton which suggests no virus involved.I didn't have system restore activated. When computer starts it says press DEL to enter setup but nothing happens when I press it.is there anyway to fix this without doing a reset?
Trying to reinstall a WD MyBook external hard drive. Receiving the following "One or more network protocols are missing on this computer" Following diagnosis receiving "Restore network protocols to default settings", and "Windows Sockets registry entries required for network connectivity are missing". My computer is an HP Pavilion 23 all-in-one. My wireless router (connected with an Ethernet cord) is an ATT 67XHG8k.
I just received a new Win 10 PC with a 500 Gb SSD for my primary drive (OS and programs) and an internal 1Tb conventional HDD for my data (library).
I would like to transfer my programs and files from my existing Win 10 PC to my new PC. My existing PC has two conventional HDDs -- both are 500Mb. The C drive has everything and the E drive is a clone.
Both the new and old PCs are running Win 10 Pro x64.
What programs do you recommend? I do have Macrium Reflect that may do the job. I'll be checking with their excellent support this week.
I think It started after I resubscribed to Kaspersky a few months ago. Most programs wont open or when they do its 10-15 min to do so. No mouse at times. Unable to acsess start screen on other files. Will get stuck in a restart/shutdown which I will then do a hard reset. After it comes back the issue remains. I am fairly capable of trying different things but have had no luck, chasing "fix's" So far I have tried the following:
- Uninstalled and reinstalled chrome - Installed malwarebites and removed 144 "threats" had read Kaspersky and mw bites were competing for CPU so I uninstalled it. currently not on my machine. - Viewed kasperskys cpu usage in task manager at the most for a moment is 23% typically 3-4% - Contacted kasperskys support asking about its functionality within windows 10. they had my select an option in settings "concede resources to other programs - Disabled Kaspersky "protection extension in chrome - Reset winsock and restarted which worked for a day (yesterday) now back to same.

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, programs, especially games, suddenly halt and the disk light comes on. This is especially annoying during games as everything halts on-screen until the disk light goes off. I was just playing Assassins Creed Syndicate and the dialog would go silent while the disk light was on. It's almost like Windows 10 is halting while a load is taking place.
I originally thought my games disk was beginning to age but this happens in IE, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc., which are on a different disk.Does Win 10 have a disk management issue? I just happened to think that my page file is on a separate disk from Win 10 and my games. Could this cause an issue?
Since 2 or 3 weeks when I switch on my notebook, after loading my desktop it hangs loading startup programs. When it hangs, I can't even shut down, I have to press the power button 4 seconds to shut down.It happened with my 3 notebooks, but it remains only in one of them. This problem remains in an HP EliteBook 8540w running Windows 10 Pro 64 bits. In this notebook I had uncheck the "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" when I installed Windows 10, because it didn't shut down properly.I don't know what to do, I tried SFC and DISM tool, both found errors but were unable to correct them.
Whenever I start Windows 10, early on in the boot cycle I get a Firefox Window. As the system continues to initialize the Firefox window slowly come to life, though sometimes not fully.
I've checked all the obvious places, Task Manager, c;usersuser_nameAppDataRoaming
I must have put this in for some reason but can't think of why / how.
