Performance :: Temporarily Disable Indexing
Jan 12, 2016
I suspect that windows indexing might be causing the short, intermittent freezes that I have been experiencing.I want to test it.I went to services and stopped windows search. But I see that the process SearchIndexer.exe is still running.

After upgrading to TH2 I had an issue with windows search. The service wouldn't start at all.
I managed to run the Windows Search service.
I had to delete the Key RebuildIndex and change value of key SetupCompletedSuccessfully to 1.
Now that the search service works I have another problem. The indexing is not working:
In Advanced options the Index Location is blank and the button Select New is grayed out.
When I run the troubleshooter I get : Incorrect permissions on Windows Search directories -- Not fixed
The owner of folders C:Program DataMicrosoftSearch and C:Program DataMicrosoftSearchData is SYSTEM.
Administrator and my user name are added with Full Control.
What could be the problem?

Have desktop HP Pavilion P 6000 4GB DDR3 1 Terabyte memory. Had no problem with Win 7, but frequently get the blue spinning circle next to my pointer. Some times it continues to surf other times it give a temp freeze. Checked CPU percentage not high but disk will jump to 100 on startup. The computer light and sound is chomping away when I am just reading the news. Ads in the middle of the page on both sides of any game I play along four or five TV commercials during a 15 minute online Hearts. Reset to factory settings. Hardware problem or Win 10 too busy data mining. I google an issue and 10 minutes later check my email getting solicitations on the same issue.?? Edge was very fast when first downloaded. Oh yes download speed is 35 but runs closer to 40.

I use Macrium Reflect for image backup and want to permanently disable system protection. I have used the control panel to turn off system protection several times now but have noticed that for some reason periodically it gets turned back on. I have turned it off and then did a restart and it was still off but then several days later I checked and it was back on so I'm not completely sure what is triggering it to turn back on. Is there any way to turn it off so it doesn't come back on by itself?

Got my Windows 10 upgrade from my new HP laptop when it came out late July.(was 8.1 before)
I have a few questions but my main one is:
How do I disable the large black pop up that continually pops up all day even when I am not using the search function? It is on the bottom left and is part of the search function.
I have disabled the Cortana as I never use it and thought the pop up would go away but it keeps popping up but now it is blank with no weather or news.
I would like to carry on using search but do not want this pop up.

True that if one disables System Restore, then an alternate backup software is needed. Yet, I'm wondering if this is something which you recommend if looking for improving SSD performance (exclude the risk of not having a backup)?
The other bit is, though SSD are faster for boot time, with Win10 it takes about 25 seconds from cold boot to be on desktop. In Win8/8.1, it took me 8 seconds with the same Intel 520 240GB SSD. With Hibernate enabled, the boot is faster than 25 seconds but not 8 seconds.

Since the 19th when my computer installed the following updates
Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135173)
Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package (KB3119142)
Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135782)
it will no longer fully shut down. Having encountered this issue when I first upgraded to 10 I went to turn off hybrid sleep, and the option is currently disabled on the device. However, the only way to fully shut it down is to hold the power button till it shuts off.
Is there any way to fix this? I'd rather not have to unplug everything every time I shut it off just so the lights won't keep me awake.

I've got a lot of PDF's in my User directory, which according to the Indexing service has been indexed (and it says it's done and has indexed thousands of files). PDF's are set to search file properties only. When I search for any of the PDF's by name though I don't find them. I've tried rebuilding the index and no luck. According to the Indexing settings (default) it is indexing the users folder.

I have been trying to set my Windows 10 Home 64-bit computer to index only the Start Menu but not anything else (such as IE Favourites, Documents). I know exactly where all my documents are; the only time I use search is something like, I press the Win key, and type in cmd, or ccleaner, etc. So I really only need Windows to index the start menu.
However, every time after reboot, if I go into Indexing Options they will just revert back to default. Is there a way I can make the changes stick?

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and have encountered an interesting problem. I realized it initially when I would press start and begin to type a program's name in order to run it, as I was doing with Windows 7, but it would not find any results and would prompt me to Google the program. I found it strange but didn't think much of it.
Once I started looking into the issue, I noticed when I go to Indexing Options it says "Indexing is not running." When trying to rebuild indexing, it gives the message about how it will take a while, and then does nothing. So I decided to look into Windows Search.
Windows Search is not and will not run. First: If I go to services.msc and try to start the Windows Search service, it tells me that "The Windows Search service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
So I tried through an elevated cmd prompt: "net start wsearch" gives me error 15:
"C:WINDOWSsystem32>net start wsearch
The Windows Search service is starting..
The Windows Search service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 15 has occurred.
The system cannot find the drive specified."
Finally, and perhaps the strangest thing, one post told me to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows Search SetupCompletedSuccessfully and change the value to 0. However, the only thing in the registry under Windows Search is a Preferences folder. There are no keys there. So to me it looks as though Windows Search does not currently exist on my computer.
So of course I run sfc /scannow. Unfortunately, it tells me:
C:WINDOWSsystem32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.

I don't use Windows search normally, but today had reason to look for Indexing Options in the CP. No sign. Yes, things are being indexed. Yes, the service is running.
So could I invoke Indexing Options some other way?
control.exe srchadmin.dll
- nothing.
Now when I looked for srchadmin.dll, I only found this in Windows.old. Really?
control.exe <path to windows.old...>srchadmin.dll opened indexing options.
is this dll missing a consequence of having done an in place upgrade install?

I activated the ctrl alt disable login screen for Windows 10 by using this registry key from this forum.(Lock Screen - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums).
I downloaded and installed the key to disable only to find it didn't work so I tried to manually do it by changing the number from 0 to 1 only to find its already at 1.
I also tried going the user passwords2 to find the box to disable ctrl alt disable login is already ticked, but is greyed out meaning I can't untick the box.

I've notice that on windows 10 and 8.1, task manager would show the my max cpu core speed is 2.3-2.4 ghz. However, my Core 2 Quad q8400 is rated at 2.66 ghz. I tried changing the power settings in windows and try lowering my cpu temperature, but my speed would never reach 2.66 ghz.

My PC performance with Windows 10 is very good except when it isn't
One of the things that is perplexing me is that my external hard drives seem to be impacting my startup performance. Following start up Task Manager performance tab shows one of my external drives (G) working at nearly 100% and the noisy disk drive suggests that it is working hard. The disk transfer rate also indicates movement between the PC and the drive. This is despite Drive G being used only as a storage/backup device with no automated actions configured. Yesterday Drive G became very hot as a result.
If I disconnect Drive G, my second external hard drive Drive F takes its place and task manager shows the same activity as previously shown on G. If both drives are connected F shows no activity.

I'm facing a problem with the task manager. Suddenly both of my HDs stopped showing any activity in the task manager and are constantly show 0% although there is activity and despite the fact that in the resource monitor activity is shown properly. What the fault might be?
I think they've stopped after I connected an external HD. But I am not sure though so don't rely on that being the issue.

I have been having some really annoying performance problems after upgrading my laptop from win8 to win 10.
My laptop is a asus ux32vd, with an Intel i7-3517U cpu.(normal core speed: 1.7ghz, turbo: 2.4ghz)
CPU-Z is showing ~990mhz constantly, no matter how high load there is on the cpu, and what temperature it is(usually around 50-60C).
I just cant figure out what is going on, and why it keeps throttling. Everything is running really slow, chrome is slow, facebook is tough to scroll through. Tried resetting the power plans to default, that didnt work. sometimes it works for changing power plan, and the restarting, but its not consistent at all. What it could be?

Is it possible to make a .reg file to optimize my visual effects for best performance for all users that sign into one PC?
I want to do this because we have many people who sign into the PC via our Active Directory through the network. If I can get a .reg file that just applies this to all users that would be awesome!

Asus UX305F laptop I bought last week. It's working fine apart from a couple of things:
- When the battery is getting low, say from 10% and down, the performance drops dramatically and everything, particularly the internet, runs so slow that it's almost impossible to use until I reconnect the charger. I've changed the on-battery power settings to match the performance settings when it's plugged in and it hasn't made any difference.
- When I'm using the laptop in my bedroom which is adjacent to the living room where the WIFI signal is coming from, the connection is extremely slow, much slower than my mobile phone for example. In the living room I average about 50mbps whereas in the bedroom I'd be lucky to get 20mbps though my phone can get about 40mbps in the same room.
