View 3 RepliesSo yesterday I installed 10 on the laptop. It appears to work very well, even though it seems, and is, intrusive (privacy concerns) and for me a long learning curve to figure out how all the new 'apps' (old redesigned programs and UI) work.
Here's the problem:
I have read through this tutorial (plus many other posts and articles): [URL]
I want/need to change the timing of the background pictures/theme and the colors of the window from the stock (forced upon me) settings, but the display does NOT show the controls in the bottom of the personalization area as they are shown in that tutorial (They were there in W7 and Vista, and in the tutorial above made in March).
I have tried different resolutions (none smaller available, currently at 1366x768, native), and only two font/display/text sizes I could find of 100% and 125%: The needed controls still don't show up.
The laptop is an ASUS G50VT - 5. Stock except for a 500GB Hybrid drive.
Yesterday I upgrade my laptop and my desktop to Windows 10 from Windows 7. The laptop upgrade took quite a while, but went very well. I was able to customize my settings easily. The installation on the desktop seemed to work fine, but I get a message that there is a missing dll for a system menu. I cannot customize my settings so my default application don't show up there and I cannot change the weather setting, as the app doesn't recognize my location.
View 7 RepliesSo I have been trying to get into the personalize and display settings by right clicking on my desktop. This is the error I get.
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.
I am also not able to get into settings by click the Start and Settings link. Nothing happens. what to do....
I have an Acer (Intel Pentium Windows 10, 64-bit) computer which I bought a few months ago, and created one 'user' (my name - say John) Suddenly this week when I logged in (as John) the only items on the desktop were the default programs installed with the computer; all my files were gone. When opening the browser, or windows media player, all my custom settings were gone and it was as if the programs were being used for the first time. The default program used to open files (e.g. the original program instead of windows media player) had all reverted also. The start button was/is also not working.
I then discovered my files are still there and accessible - to do so I have to right-click on one of the programmes on desktop and 'open file location' then I can use the left column to (through windows explorer) get to C drive then 'Users' then 'John' and I can access everything that way. Also, the keyboard settings have bizarrely changed ie shift + 2 gives the @ sign instead of quotation mark.I have Norton which suggests no virus involved.I didn't have system restore activated. When computer starts it says press DEL to enter setup but nothing happens when I press it.is there anyway to fix this without doing a reset?
It was working day before yesterday.
The Tray icon only shows the network/Ethernet adapter; the wifi icon is missing. Normally I'd click on the wifi icon to connect to wifi networks; that option is not available. Instead I get "Not Connected - No Connections Available." (If I plug in an Ethernet cable, that message goes away. But I need wifi!)
I head into the "Settings" app, choose "Network & Internet", and the topmost tab is "Airplane Mode"; the "Wifi" tab is missing from the Settings app.
I head into the control panel, network and internet, network connections, change adapter settings, and my Wi-Fi adapter is there, enabled, and full green signal strength.
"Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6235"
Disabled it and reenabled, didn't work. Rebooting (twice) didn't work. Full power reset (press-hand-hold power button for 5 seconds) and restart didn't work.
Ran network troubleshooter, it says there may be an issue with the wifi adapter's device driver; it tried to fix it but failed. So I manually updated the device driver in the Properties dialog; that seemed to actually install a new driver (based on how long it took) but it didn't work.
I wonder if there was a recent auto-update for this device that's causing a problem? Or is there some way behind the scenes to hook up this device (who's driver seems to be working) with the windows 10 app (which isn't recognizing it)?

I would like to select which pictures from a theme I would like to use for my background. To be more specific, I want to disable a few pictures. This used to be possible in Win 7/Win 8.1 by going to the Theme settings (in win 10: Personalize/Themes/Theme Settings), and clicking an icon called Desktop Background on the bottom of the page.
View 3 RepliesHad to try a few different methods to get the start menu not working problem to go away. Finally I had to go back to a restore point from just after the upgrade from Windows 7 to get the start menu to work again.
Now I try to turn back on the folders in Personalization > Start > Choose which folders appear on Start and the only one that is able to be toggled off and on is the Settings one. I want to turn most of them back on, but they are all locked to off.
I hope you can see what I mean if my words do not make sense in the attached screen capture.

I downloaded and tried out some different pictures for my desktop background. After deciding on one of them I deleted the others from my pictures folder but the deleted pictures are still showing in the personalisation window and can even still be set as background. Why that's happening or how to stop it?

View 9 RepliesI'm trying to access the settings for Cortana, the program works fine and all but I want to access the settings but once I bring up the options and specifically click settings,Cortana freezes and forces me to have to end the task, and it happens every time. What can I do?
View 4 RepliesPower & Sleep settings won't save my screen brightness settings. On my plugged in HP laptop default the screen brightness is set to maximum despite making changes in the Power & Sleep menu screen. I've even tried creating my own Power Plan but the next time it restarts it changes to the HP recommended power plan which sets the screen brightness to maximum.

View 8 RepliesI recently upgraded to windows 10 however after the download some of my programs had disappeared (not all of them). Some of the ones that disappeared included steam, malware bytes and google chrome. Some that stayed included MS office 2013, ccleaner and CPUID. After some research I found a windows.old folder which I assume is a backup of everything that was on W8.1. Something I found very strange was that all of my steam game icons were there however needed redownloading. Is it possible to just copy the whole steam folder from windows.old into the program files folder in windows 10 or will I have to redone load everything again? Could I also do this with any other programs or will they not work and is it recommended to delete windows.old?
View 1 RepliesI have Windows 10 Home and all of my icons have disappeared. I mean not only my desktop ones all of them I will include some screenshots. This happened when I used the Winfix option in the Systemcare 9 Pro app. It told me the I have something wrong with sticky notes, so I just clicked fix then all of my icons just disappeared, and it said the problem was fixed. I have tried running every troubleshooting method in the windows OS and I everything says everything is all fine.
My personal theory is that either there is a setting for this that I can change back or that I have a problem in the registry (I do not back it up frequently sadly so I cannot load a backup) or the problem lies in a corrupted file (I have used sfc /scannow and it says nothing is wrong). I also am unable to access the properties option (Whenever I right click the menu comes up but when I click properties it won't open).
I upgraded this morning, loved it except no multi monitor. came home from work downloaded the latest nvida drivers for windows 10 still not multi monitor. The biggest issue, most of my folders on my D: drive (2 Mirrored drives) were gone... All my pics, music, etc.. so I had to uninstall Windows 10.
Now I have a D: and a G: drive with various folders in each from my previous Window 7 D: drive.. I think Win10 broke my mirror. at least I got all my files back.
I have just started using windows 10 on a new PC. I have tried to download an anti virus program. It downloads and installs (well it appears to) but the program is not there when finished. Not in the programs lists or on 'remove programs' either. I cant find any way of searching the PC like I did in XP or Vista 'search for all files and folders'. Is this option still there hidden away to make things more difficult?
View 9 RepliesI have just formatted my PC last Monday, and i have installed drivers and Steam and American Truck Simulator. I know that my saves and mods are in My Documents folder and ATS loads still fine after the folder is missing.
When I go to C:Usersdrfee there is a folder called Documents, but there is nothing in it, but where have My Documents folder gone? And yes hidden items is checked.
Upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10 last week. The old calculator was removed, but I can't find the new calculator or any calculator.
FYI: I currently use Classic Shell - because I hate the tile interface. The calculator is not in any program group.
Recently I have had the issue where some icons go missing. In the image below, its the mute icon however it appears elsewhere. May be related or not but my skype has suddendly stop showing special characters too.I have tried "Reset default fonts".

View 9 RepliesI read of a possible fix and it said to click on Start and then go to Settings and then go to Personalize and then go to Start and click on " Use Full Start Screen". when I click on the start icon and right click it, I have to go to Control Panel to go to Settings and one of the options is Personalize but there are three choices below it and one of them does not say go to " Start" and then click Use Full Screen. I don't know if this is related or not, but over the same period of time recently, I get an email that I receive every couple of days and there is a link in the email. When I click on the link over the past few days, nothing happens.I have had Windows 10 for about three months and the PC is a Dell which is about three years old.
View 3 RepliesI got a new laptop today which came with Windows 10 which I've never used before, so everything's still very new to me.
I've been trying to move files off my previous laptop which runs Windows 7. I've spent a few hours collecting everything I need onto an ext. hard drive, but once I cut & paste my files onto this new laptop, nothing shows up. The destination folder is completely empty, and I made sure while the files were copying over.
Is there anywhere else they might have gone? Luckily I was able to ctrl+z to get all my files back or else they would've been gone forever. But this time all the files reappear in the ext hard drive like they were meant to, so I'm really confused. Is it a problem with Windows, or my external?
I've also noticed that the files copy over just fine if I send them bit by bit, say, about 3GB each time? But I've got 400+GB sitting around here.
