I had user names set up for myself, my daughter and my husband but all have disappeared except the Microsoft account I used when setting up Microsoft 10. I can't find any of the pictures or documents from those files either.
I have already gone to the control panel and checked users and they are not there. All of my photos were under my daughters user name.
During the week i had the windows 10 upgrade install onto my Toshiba Satellite laptop that was running Windows 7. Windows 10 did open but then crashed as it was booting up stuck in an error reboot loop. So i tried to restore the previous version of windows and it has been stuck in the boot cycle ever since. It will run a continuous loop restarting the process every 10 mins. I can't get it ti get out of this reboot loop. What to try and get my laptop up and running.
View 2 RepliesI have tried everything I can think of, including the stand-alone ZA uninstall, however the Win 10 installer is detecting *something* and refusing to proceed until ZA is uninstalled:
Some Apps need t be uninstalled
These programs need to be uninstalled because they aren't compatible with the upgrade.

OK I did my windows 10 upgrade now on three machines. two of the machines were single user windows 8.1 prior to upgrade, but one was a Windows 7 Pro machine. I ran the upgrade, but lost my kids user id log on. I had a user id for them set up as a user with no admin rights and no password. I am not opposed to it having a password, now that the kids are teenagers, but I can't figure out how to recreate the user ID so that it is attached to all there saved files. Lots of schoolwork was saved on there ID. I can access it with my admin user account, but want to restore there id.

View 1 RepliesI've used Linux for about five years and just switched to Windows 10, and it seems that file names are being abbreviated by the new system. This was obvious when I copied some document files to the new system, and not recognizing my files is rather disorienting. I know that DOS had a limit on the number of characters in a file name, but I can't believe that's still the case. Is there a way to show the full names, or did Windows do a permanent rename?

All drive in explorer appear as "Local Drive".. I want to rename them "Drive_A", "SOFTWARE", "PHOTOS", etc. but can't.. Is there a way?
View 3 RepliesI have factually just installed windows 10, given it the time it required and let it load.
First, my mouse was missing and the desktop icon names were white with clear centre of the words.
So I restarted my factual laptop. I regained my mouse however the desktop icon shortcut names under the icons themselves still remain see-through without the usual black colour.
You used to be able to change the names of the items in quick access - like you can a shortcut - in Windows 8, but now you can't. Other than replacing all of them with shortcuts, any way of changing this?

View 1 RepliesI have a new laptop, so unless this is some weird feature that's specific to the laptop, then I assume it's a Windows 10 settings issue because I've never encountered anything like this before. I downloaded several JPGs and PDFs from various emails and began to change the arbitrary "234809238ksdfjskdfjsdlkf" type filenames to specific things indicating what they are, and I got done and realized all the stuff I typed was gone and the JPGs had changed to "filename(1)", "filename(2)", "filename(3)" and the same with the PDFs.. and "filename" was the name I'd assigned to the first file of each file type. The subsequent names I'd chosen were entirely different and the files were all unrelated to one another.
View 6 RepliesI have a back up of files & folders that I come from my previous Windows 7 system (same machine - I upgraded to W10) that I am not ableto restore and I really need them. My system is the following:
HP Pavilion DV7-6b32US laptop/notebook
64 bit
16GB RAM
2 internal HD (1 is the original 500GB and the other is a 1TBdrive divided into two equal partitions in the NTFS format
The back up was done using Windows 7 built in feature/utility and I am trying to restore the folders with their files to my Win 10 but I keep getting the error "short names are not enabled on this volume" with the code 0x80070131. I have done my research which pointed me to answers pointing to this: "to manually enable 8.3naming after formatting you can use fsutil.exe from the command line: fsutil 8dot3name set d: 0 (d: is the drive partition on my 1TB NTFS driveI use for my data where I am trying to restore the files to. The only thing I haven't done is the formatting for two reasons, 1 - it is already formatted and 2 - I have a TON of data already on the drive that I cannot lose.
Windows 10 out of the Edge Browser allows almost anything to be pinned to Start Menu which is great but many of the names are too long, so once again, can names of apps be changed that are pinned to start menu?

I renamed a User Account due to conflict on the LAN [same name, same spelling] and sure enough, now I have two names for the account, one a slightly hidden original name, and permissions issues. To rid it, I will create an all new Administrator account, move everything over, and demolish the old. How to do? the docs/files are easy... the settings for apps etc are not as I recall

I really hate the completely flat look of the windows, not only does it seem like a major step back 30 years in time, it's difficult to see where the borders of the windows end and other things on the screen begin. is there something i can do to put back the 3-d effects [rounded edges and corners, shadowing, etc.] that was part of windows versions up through windows 7 ? I've already installed a 3rd-party app called 'classic shell' -- that's a real life saver! -- but while it fixes some things, it doesn't seem to address this particular issue.
View 2 RepliesSince switching to Windows 10, Alt + Tab does not toggle to previous screen in a number of case, i.e. you have to hit Alt + Tab twice to go to the previous screen or go through the thumbnail screens. It sounds small but being able to toggle to the previous screen by hitting Alt + Tab saves me lots of time. return to the previous functionality of earlier Windows systems.

View 1 RepliesWhen I installed windows 10, something went wrong and I could no longer could connect to the internet because some protocols were missing. Also, within five minutes of starting using my computer, the start menu stopped working. I have tried all the fixes I could find for the start menu including sfc /scannow and multiple powershell fixes. None of them worked. When I use the windows 8.1 install disk it, I get a message saying that something happened, setup has failed to determine supported install choices. Windows 10 is difficult to navigate and always seems to be missing some software.

When it booted again, suddenly a screen came up saying "Attempting to Recover Installation" then saying "Restoring your previous version of Windows....". Why does this happen? Is there any way I can change where it boots into?

View 4 RepliesI just upgraded my laptop from windows 8 to win 10. The free upgrade of course did not delete my files from window 8 so I went ahead and installed windows 10 on to my USB and booted from it for a clean install. While installing win 10 however I managed to do it on my C drive. I believe my previous OS was on D drive as when I go into my system properties now, C drive = 373 GB free from 393 GB which has the windows icon over it to show that OS is inside it and the 'D' drive has only 43 GB free from 393 GB capacity.
I would like to free up my D drive and delete all previous files and maybe also remove partition and only have one storage which is C drive. How to do it? Do I just go into my D drive and delete all the files inside it? such program files x86 etc? while running window 8 I managed to get a lot of spyware, adware etc on my system and hence why I preferred a clean install of windows 10.
My custom built computer started to randomly shutdown or restart, and after exhausting all software/driver checks to windows updates and other software related discrepancies, I resorted to "resetting" my OS, which did not fix my problem anyway. The issue, it seems, turns out to be an old computer I recently bought and had it in close proximity to my computer, and the old computer was causing some sort of an interference. That's my only explanation anyway since the issue stopped after I unplugged and moved the old computer away from my custom built PC.
At any rate, since it appears that my issue had nothing to do with software/driver/windows updates, I would like to know if there is any way I could revert the windows "reset." I attempted to use the option to restore to and old version, but that did not work (I assume this option has to do with System Restore to a created Restore Point?). I also do not see the "Go Back To An Earlier Build" option from Recovery, and I am guessing this is because I did not "upgrade" from a different version of window?
So really, my question is, is there a way to revert a windows 10 reset to it's previous state. I am hoping there is so I don't have to go through the trouble of setting my PC back again if I do not really have to. The answer to my question is probably no, but I wanted to check anyway.
Is there a way to 'fix' windows sizes?
If I resize a window, next time I restart that application I am often finding the window does not retain the previous window sizing. In particular, Edge always opens maximised. A little irritating to have to resize every time - I don't want most applications maximised on my 28" 2560x1440 WQHD monitor.
Is there a solution or setting somewhere that I'm unaware of?
