View 4 RepliesUntil two days ago all was fine but since earlier today, whenever I go to "pictures", select a folder and then click to open a file, I get the following error message..
J:DCIM100CANONIMG_7104.JPG Invalid value for registry"
I get the same message regardless of whether it's a new photo I've just uploaded or photos that have been on my PC for a long time.
I have a Toshiba Satellite C-50A-157 with an Intel Core i3 processor
I installed Windows 10 yesterday. Now I am unable to open any of my photos. I receive an error "invalid value to registry".
View 1 RepliesRunning clean install Windows 10 pro, I did add a reg fix to enable photo viewer, which worked fine.
I have a many picture folders, which I was able to view all fine. Suddenly only on a few folders (approx 3 from 40) I started getting "windows photo viewer can't open this picture because either photo viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to photo viewer, error. I tried to view the same jpg's using Win10 photo and get the error "it appears we don't support this file format"... One folder has a BMP image which also won't open with any app, including paint.
Went to my backup copies, same issue. I can eliminate any malware or virus issue as I regularly scan my PC. I'm concerned because I could view these jpg's previously, I am thinking some sort of registry issue. I copied folder to USB and tried to open on another Win10 PC, with the same result. I then tried to open the jpg's on a Win 7 machine, same result. Have moved file from folder still won't open, check attributes of folder/files, I have full rights.
Now I'm concerned that the 40 or so "precious" files have become corrupt which would include my backup copies. The fact I've tried to access these files on three devices without success.
One Win10 device has the following event log entry;
"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Photos_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."
Copying un-effective JPEGS into the effective folders open, copying singles files from other folders to affective folder won't open.
I tried to upload a file that won't open, it returns the message photo1.jpg this is not a valid image file.
At a loss as I can't open these files on three devices...
I've recently found that I cannot open files with .jpg extensions by clicking on the file in Windows Explorer to open with the Photos app. I can open the files if I use the Open With option and select a different program such as Photoshop.

View 1 RepliesI had a virus and was forced to do a system restore to 5/august/2015 and when I tried to open .jpg file and "Invalid value for registry" happened I tried some fixes in PowerShell and Photos app and Store app weren't invisible anymore but had this exclamation mark...
View 4 RepliesFor some reason, I cannot import this registry script I made. Syntax seems to be correct. I'm thinking it's most likely an invalid key somewhere. Look at the attachment, what is causing this error: "The specified file is not a registry script."
View 2 RepliesI want to create a new file from my photos on Windows 10 to use for a calendar so that I can change sizes etc but it wont work. always used to.
View 1 RepliesI'm having a big time issue in Windows10, build 10041. Nothing works. Icons of Windows related things get "invisible".
Here's some screenshots:
When clicking Cortana, this happens: [URL]. She doesn't open.
When clicking the start menu: [URL]. It only gets highlighted on mouse over. Doesn't work. Right clicking it though, work with the menu as expected.
Store button: [URL]. Looks invisible. Clicking it, gives this: [URL]. Same thing for calculator. No modern apps work!
Onedrive: attempting to start it gives this: [URL]. Attempting to debug it:[URL]. Opening VS: [URL]. Result: [URL]

When I try to save added text to a document in Wordpad that I have already "Saved as" I keep getting the "saved as" page. How do I Save additional text?
View 6 RepliesWhere the start menu doesn't open when its clicked on. I have seen other posts with this issue where its an issue with personalization settings under ms-settings. I am unable to open Ms-settings because I receive the error "Invalid value for registry". I tried opening it from the notifications button but that doesn't launch at all. I am trying to avoid reinstalling the system.
I have tried dism /online /cleanup-image:
/restorehealth sfc /scannow
Ran multiple different virus scanners.

Apparently it is my turn: Photos app no longer launches (clicking on the icon does nothing; no error report in Event Log). Trying to double-click image files associated with Photos results in "Invalid Value for Registry" message box. No explanation as to for what value is "invalid" and why it is "invalid".
It appears that the damage is user-account-specific, meaning that Photos typically continue to work fine under different (undamaged) user accounts. So, the only known solution appears to be to create a new user account and set it up from scratch.
Considering that setting up a new account requires quite an effort, this is not a real solution but more of a last resort "loser's way out" kind of measure. Hence the question: any additional information/research about this error? What specific "registry value" is responsible for this problem? I see quite a few reports about this error on the Net, but most of them seem to settle with creating a new account.
When trying to add an email account to Outlook 2013 on my daughters Surface Pro 3 running Win10 I get the following error message AFTER the test message is successfully sent.
"The specified device, file, or path cannot be accessed. It may have been deleted, it may be in use, you may be experiencing network problems,. or you may not have sufficient permissions to access it. Close any applications using this file and try again."
Also when saving a Word 2013 document to a local user document folder I get this error message:
"C:UsersahughdocumentsTest document.docx You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in the Documents folder instead?"
There is only one user account on the computer and it is an administrator account.
I am moving my documents, videos, etc. folders to another internal HD. I have two issues:
1. When I right-click on the folder, properties, location, and try to change back to default, it gives me a "access is denied error message".
2. When I try to change the folder to a new folder on the HD, it tells me that "the specified path is invalid".
Upgraded last night and am slowly working through minor issues. One thing that's confusing me - my username is supposed to be in the Administrator group on my computer, but my settings seem to be connected to the Home User group instead. I first discovered this when I tried to open Outlook and Outlook couldn't access my .pst file. I went into Security and gave the Home User group full access. Problem solved.
Next, I found that I couldn't save to any of my Documents folders. I found that if I changed Security settings to full access on each individual folder, it would allow me to save, create new folders, etc. Now I'm wondering if it's possible to make this a more global change? Changing access to every stinkin file is pretty annoying and it seems logical that there should be a global setting to do this. (One more thing related to user issues: what's the use of being in an Admin group if you don't actually have Admin permissions to run things? The cmd menu won't allow me to do anything...)
I cannot open an office document straight away like I could do in Windows 7. Is there any setting I am not aware of that need to be changed. Previously I would just double click and the document would open. Now I have to search for it when I try to open in the first instance.
View 3 RepliesOne feature I used alot in Win 8.1 was the right-click "Preview" option on photos. I could open them in the viewer without having to launch a full blown editor like Photoshop. So I would use Preview and Open to accomplish two different goals. But now, I noticed there's no more Preview option on the JPG's..
View 9 RepliesI recovered the pics after I deleted them, But half of them are corrupted ! software that I might use !
View 2 RepliesI've had Windows 10 for about a month now. Everything has been going well. Then this AM I tried to open a folder on my desktop but it will not open. I right click on it to only go back to my home screen.I cant even get into my documents.
No folders what so ever. I clicked on properties to check the securities and all is well there.
I can't open "This PC" or any other folder that is on my desktop. File Explorer won't function either. Whether I double-click, or do a right-click and choose "Run", all that happens is the little hourglass comes on for 1/10th of a second. If I do a right-click, choose properties, and click on "Open Target Location", my entire screen goes black for 2 seconds and then comes back with icons repopulating the window slowly. In fact, this is my second time composing this message, because my Edge Browser crashed the first time, because I did the "Open Target Location" during composition, just to make sure it wasn't a one time anomaly.
This inability started 2 days ago. Since then, I've tried:
1. The SFC ScanNow. Everything is Fine.
2. Running complete boot-time scans using Avast and Malwarebytes. No Viruses, Adware, etc..
3. System Restore. Surprisingly only one Restore Point was there, and it was only 10 hours old. Not back far enough.
4. Burned the latest Windows10 ISO to DVD and Reinstalled Windows...keeping all files/settings. Four hours invested in doing this last night... made no difference.
Still can't open any Folders or "This PC". All the other right-click functions work, except for "OPEN". All other aspects of this P.C. work great, just like they did before this one major problem suddenly appeared. This shouldn't be THAT big of a deal to fix. Never had problems even remotely like this in Windows 7 or even Vista. What should I do next?
I just got Windows 10 installed, and the first problem I'm having is that I can't get the folders in my taskbar to open either by regular click, or by right click and selecting "Open". The exception is File Explorer which works by default clicking the folder icon, or by right clicking the taskbar icon and selecting it either by click or right-click-open. The rest of the folders, ones I pinned and ones that are there as frequent folders, just sit there and do nothing when clicked on. I tried a restart, turned off a lot of the apps that start with my computer, but still not opening files. It's slowing down my work to have to go through the file explorer each time.
View 1 RepliesI Just received my new desktop PC a few days ago with a clean windows 10 install. After just a 2-3 days im suddenly unable to open any folders/file explorer.
Yesterday I formatted and reinstalled windows. And after just 10-12 hours I can no longer open any folders, again.
I have recorded a video of how it looks: [URL] ....
As you can see the screen flashes briefly and then all the icons rearrange on the desktop.
Programs i have installed:
- Some Blizzard games
- Office 2010
- Dropbox
Yesterday, out of the blue, I was no longer able to left click on a folder to open it. If I right click and then choose open, it will open. I get the error message:
I have not made any changes lately and I don't know what could cause this as I have never experienced this on any version of windows. I am running Windows 10 Enterprise on my Dell XPS 8100 with an Intel i5 Processor at 3.20Mhz and 8 GBs of DDR3 RAM, and a 1 TB HDD which is about 1/2 full/empty.
