Removing Build Version From Desktop

Aug 2, 2015

Just loaded up Windows 10 today and noticed the version of my copy is painted on the desktop. I looked in to how to "unpaint" the build version from my desktop but the reg fixes that were used in the insider edition to show/hide the version aren't doing anything (Hkey Current User - Control Panel - Desktop - PainDesktopVersion).

Its obviously not doing anything bad, its just annoying to see random text in the corner of my screen.

Windows 10 version is Educational.

Wireless Background Task Version Changes With Build 36

Dec 17, 2015

I've been running GlassWire on my system and just got the alert,  "Application Info Changed - the application version changed from 6.2.10586 to 6.2.10586.35" for Wireless Background Task.

I suspect this is what's fixing the WiFi woes that so many have been having lately.

Blank Desktop Build 10158

Jun 30, 2015

I've just upgraded 10 Build 10158 (from 10130) and the desktop on my main login is blank. There are no icons. I cannot make any new icon appear(i.e. if I create a new notepad file I cannot see it).

I can view the content of the desktop via file explorer.

I have had this problem for approx 1 week - since 10130 (one day I booted and the desktop was blank). I thought the next build may fix this bug.

My tool bar and start menu are 100% working. I can open various windows over the desktop (like a browser, word, a PDF etc....) but there are no visible icons.

If I log into my Wifes desktop, everything including the desktop works 100%.

Apps :: Windows Build Message On Desktop

Aug 31, 2015

Three weeks after upgrading from Windows 7 to 10 from Microsoft a message saying "Windows 10 Home Build 10240" appeared in the right-hand corner of my desktop last night. As I like to have a completely clear desktop. no icons etc. this is a nuisance.

Windows Mobile And Desktop Build Numbers Aligning

Jun 5, 2015

Windows mobile for phones is currently at build 10134 (according to the latest leak) and the desktop version is at build 10135.

I find this interesting because Microsoft was so behind with their mobile builds vs the desktop. Could this mean Microsoft has played caught up internally with the mobile build?

I don't know, but I would like to start seeing universal updates to universal apps, instead of apps updating separately for desktop and mobile.

Just thought it was interesting to bring up - especially since we all want more stable versions of Windows 10 mobile, maybe it means the core OS is even closer to the desktop version.

Updates :: Cannot Find Newest Build After Rolling Back To Previous Build

Jan 29, 2016

So, recently (after the November build release) I woke the next morning to find that my computer underwent a rather major update. After which, it seemed, my home network was thrown out of wack. I immediately rolled/reverted/recovered to previous build. But now everything is out of wack. Most of the time I have to restart my computer just so it'll communicate with my printer to start printing.

And restarting the computer is twice as long if it restarts at all. Most of the time It gets stuck in the "restart" progress animates (the rotating circles) and I have to press the restart button on the computer tower, with great regret and dread. Transferring files from one windows 10 device to another is a 50/50 hit or miss. I'm not literate when it comes to networking and was super happy how everything was.

But now, not only is my wifi home network out of wack, but my computer itself is wonky. I figure I might as well reinstall the newest build in hopes that it'll at least fix a fe of the problems. But anytime I check for updates, the newest build no longer shows up.

Wiping Out Data Without Removing OS?

Oct 25, 2015

I want to prepare my desktop before selling it and wipe all personal data. I am aware of tools like DBAN which would wipe out the entire disk including Win 10. I would prefer not to do that.

On a related note - my desktop is HP - came with Windows 7 - has the disk partitioned to C: and Recovery Image D:. If I do wipe out the entire C: drive, how exactly will I be able to recover Win 7 from D: ? It won't boot, right?

Installation :: Removing USB While Installing?

Dec 5, 2015

I'm upgrading my 8.1 tablet to W10 with a bootable USB. Now I didn't know it would take this long and it's still Copying files, problem is that it's been two and a half hours now and the tablet isn't charging because the USB is in it. In other words, the battery will likely not make it...

When can I remove the USB so I can start charging my tablet again? Can I remove it while it's doing copying files while in the installation phase?

Removing A Persistent McAfee File

Mar 6, 2016

Just updated to windows 10 from 8.1. previously had McAfee installed and had removed it on the 8.1 build unfortunately 1 file "msmm" had not been removed before she updated to windows 10.

I can only find way for removing the file for 8.1 and it wont work in windows 10. The file is currently using 50% CPU, so you can see why I need to get this fixed.

if i go into task manager and turn it off it restarts
if i go into servies.msc the option to stop them is greyed out
i can find the file location but can not delete it because its running

I have even tried safe mode, logging in and trying the above and still have the same results, can ot remove the file.

Customization :: Removing Unwanted Apps From All PCs?

Feb 19, 2016

We're looking at using Windows 10 at our school. I've got a few for testing. One of the things I'm trying to figure out how to do is remove things like the XBOX tile. Things we don't want students in during a class etc. Anyway I can't seem to find a way of removing them. I've found several pages listing powershell commands but they don't work. At least not for the xbox tile. Also I need a way of doing this for all PC's group policy or registry so I don't have to do it one by one.

Accounts :: Removing Microsoft Account Login?

Sep 18, 2015

I'm running windows 10 pro free upgrade, I stupidly created a Microsoft account to install an app 'remote desktop' it changed my login to an email address, that messed up all my network logons, and I don't want an email logon, I hate it. I want a normal name login. I forever connect to remote servers and cant mess around trying to connect!

How can I remove the Microsoft account login, its taken over my prime login with all my applications, I cant seem to delete it, I deleted my Microsoft account and now cant change the password on it!

I don't mind hacking the registry. I just need it gone. otherwise its a start again windows 7 installation.

Customization :: Removing Selections From Right Click Menu?

Dec 14, 2015

I see people wanting to add stuff to the right click, I'd like to remove some stuff. When you pop up the right click menu, for some folders it's HUGE, and it makes it difficult to find the stuff you'd actually want to use.

pintostartscreen - I'd like this gone from the Recycle Bin. I keep hitting it when emptying, it's just annoying.

Scan with Windows Defender - I'd like this gone everywhere.

Include in Library - Ditto for this one, don't use it.

Cast to Device - Yep, useless to me as well.

Shared Folder Synchronization - Never use it, be gone!

Is there some 3rd party utility to manage all these additions?

There are also applications that stick extra stuff in there that I never need, it would be great to manage those as well.

Installation :: Removing Mystery Partitions After Upgrade?

Nov 20, 2015

I've successfully installed Win 10 on 4 PCs with no problems so far, so I was asked to upgrade one of our office systems from Win 8.1 to Win 10. The unit was an ASUS with Win 8.1 OEM-installed and working, but missing almost all of the available Win 8.1 updates. All else looked good and Win 8.1 was working well. I updated the machine to current 8.1 maintenance level, and the 'Get Win 10' app appeared as expected. I did the upgrade with no problems, but then found that Win 10 Disk Management shows a very large C: partition (Win 10) and 4 small partitions marked 'healthy recovery partition'... and they all show 100% free space and have no drive letters. Right-clicking on those partitions offers no options. Is there no way to get rid of these partitions within Windows? Or will I have to use GpartEd or equivalent? These partitions must have existed before the upgrade because I have not yet created any Win10 backups or recovery disks. I do have the Win 10 ISO files handy, so as a last resort I can do a full drive format and a clean install, but I'm curious about what might be hidden in those mystery partitions.

Installation :: Won't Start After Removing Previous Install

Jan 11, 2016

Due to a reinstall my laptop had a dual boot system with windows 10 twice installed. Now I was finished with the migration and I used EaseUs Partition Master to remove the old partition and add the space to the new partition. But now my windows doesn't boot anymore. It gets to the windows logo and the waiting icon under it, but it doesn't go to the user logon screen.

The old situation before the resize was:

Win 10 (old) 30 gb
Win 10 (new) 220 gb

Removing Unwanted Users Via Netplwiz And CP / Settings

Jan 28, 2016

I'm trying to clean up the Users on my husband's computer since being locked out via the Microsoft Account when even after changing the password online in the correct place still got Password Incorrect message on login. All good now using Local Account.

Using netplwiz, his account showed the following:

Administrator HomeUsers; Administrators
His-name HomeUsers; Administrators
HomeGroupUser$ HomeUsers (even though the network has NO Homegroup now)
UpdatusUser HomeUsers (used for NVIDIA updates so probably OK)

So I deleted the HomeGroupUser$ account.

This is a lot different to mine which just shows one account: My name Administrators. His Administrator account may be the one I enabled to access the computer during the lockout though I did go back afterwards and re-set it to /active:no. Should I leave this there?

What I really want to do is to remove the Microsoft Account. When I went to Settings etc and clicked on Remove Account, it said if I remove this account it will remove email and all content associated with it. There also seems to be an account listed under Email. This email address is not actually an Outlook email address as it is a private email address I set up from his website. He doesn't use the Mail facility on W10. So I imagine that closing the MS Account will in no way impact on this email address used via Thunderbird and the removal relates only to the USE of this address for his MS Account.
