So i have 2 hard drives, one new and one beginning to die on me. I have windows on the dying hard drive, and do not have the original disks or product key. I tried using DriveImage XML to copy everything onto the new drive, but for some reason when it boots it says "Hard disk failure" when i have the just the new hard drive in there (i am 100% sure it is plugged in properly). I really dont have the money to buy a new windows disk, and so i was wondering if it would work if i were to factory reset my computer and have windows 10 reinstall on my new hard drive, or is there an easier way?

So my father asked to reinstall Windows 10 on his desktop. He has a job where he might need documents that were created years ago any moment, so it is important that all the files gets transferred to the new install.
The problem is, the computer is extremely slow and filled with junk programs and probably a ton of malware or whatever. Is there an easy way to reinstall windows 10, and only keep files (documents, pictures, etc.) and not anything else?

All my files are gone, but when I go into Windows Explorer the file system says that this PC has 856 GB out of 1.81 TB full, but I have nothing there. When I click on it all my games etc are not there, and I don't know how to get them back. When I reset Windows I clicked "keep my files" so where are my files? My internet is really slow and would take way to long to re-download and i wont have enough space because all my files are there i cant find them anywhere.

Long story short, I have had Windows 10 on my laptop ever since the second I could upgrade it. Last week my laptop got infected with a virus and would not boot up. I tried everything and the only solution that would work was to reset it to factory condition which brought my laptop back to windows 8.1. I no longer see any notifications popping up telling me I can upgrade to Windows 10. Is there another way I can upgrade or am I stuck with Windows 8.1 for good?

My brother has a laptop (~4 yrs old). The battery went bad a couple of years ago, and so it now need to be plugged in all of the time. The laptop was asleep when he unplugged it to move it, and when he opened the lid again, it had shut down (very likely because it died). Upon starting it, he got the BSOD and 0xc000021a error code. The startup repair couldn't fix his problem. Two restore points he had on the system from installing DirectX a few days earlier didn't work. I tried entering safe mode, no luck. Now thinking I was at a last resort, I tried to refresh Windows, keeping his files but removing all the installed programs. I got a message at around 60% telling me Windows encountered a problem and couldn't complete the procedure. Same deal with the full reset. At this point, a reboot greeted me with "No operating system could be found".I got a large USB and made it into a recovery drive, checking the box that said to include OS files or something (can't remember the exact wording). I tried again using startup repair, then reinstalling windows

I want to try and reinstall windows for him but he says the laptop never came with a windows disc, that it was pre-installed instead. I've never owned a laptop so I have no clue about it but I know my Alienware Aurora came with windows 7 disc and a key sticker which I still have. I thought maybe I could format and install windows from my disc but then what will happen since he doesn't have a key and also he had windows 8 not 7.
He went to the computer store and they told him they would format his drive and install windows 10 on it but I doubt they would give him a disc or key for it. If something like this happens again he will have to go and pay another 80 bucks for them to do this which is silly. Even paying the money this time is silly since he already has a legit version of windows 8.

I currently have Windows 10, which I received as a free upgrade when I had Windows 8 several months ago. Now, I have to wipe my hard drive, so I'll obviously be reinstalling Windows 8 once I have done so. Will it again give me the option to upgrade to Windows 10, or will I be forced to stick with the dreaded Windows 8?

I am currently running Windows 10 upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro retail. Here's the deal: I am upgrading my system to Skylake, so obviously that means a new motherboard. I know if I want to directly install Win10, I have to get a new license ; but if I just reinstall my Win8.1, will I be able to perform the upgrade again ?

It seems like something went wrong during the installation process and Windows Store did not install properly. As such I can't even open it. I have tried different method suggested online, but none is working. I am just wondering if there is a way to force reinstall the Windows Store.

I have a Toshiba Satellite E45DW-C4210 (came preinstalled with Windows 10 so no disc obviously) & it came with some bloatware from Toshiba.
How can I do a "fresh" wipe or whatever you want to call it so only Windows 10 is on the laptop, I don't want any Toshiba software/bloatware on the laptop. Basically just barebones, as if I built my this laptop myself and put a copy of Windows 10 on it. That is what I'm looking to do. I just feel starting over again with nothing but Windows will improve the laptop.
I know you can do a system reset where it wipes all your data & re-installs Windows 10 but then the Toshiba's software is just installed all over again. I don't know if this is possible but if it is how can I achieve this?

But recently the pc started shutting down randomly. It couldn't start properly and sometimes the blue screen of death was involved. My question is, does the Windows 10 option to "reset and keep files" repair everything, including any broken registry things that I might have screwed up? I'm not that experienced with this, so could be a silly question.
Some background info: my computer was basically functioning normally, except for some kind of minor issues (slow downs, occasional program crashes, etc) and warnings that kept popping up in my event viewer yet I didn't really "see" the effects of most of them in everyday computer use (I'm an amateur though). This was not virus or malware related, I don't think. (I ran numerous virus scans and also used virus/malware removal, even though it didn't appear I had any, plus I have Avast and MBAM always on my computer.)
So I'm wondering if I probably screwed up the registry because I stupidly used CCleaner's registry clean-up a couple times, and have since learned I should never touch that.
I ran the Dell diagnostics to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue, by the way, and that all passed.
I had Windows 7 and did the upgrade to Windows 10. I just decided to do Windows 10's option to "reset and keep files" to do a clean install to see if that fixes these things. So I'm wondering if the registry is repaired with that kind of reset? And if it never was the registry that was the problem, will the other potential causes be repaired as well? Just want to make sure I made the right choice to reset.

I was performing a File Cleanup operation and it included something call Windows Defender. I always click to delete everything it displays. So I did and it deleted Windows Defender. I have since learned what it is and want to reinstall. I do not understand why Microsoft would allow you to delete a part of the system from the file cleanup screen? But it did. How can I reinstall?

I am currently an Windows 7 Professional user, and I was seriously considering to jump to Windows 10.
After upgrading, I was thinking in doing a factory reset, in order to try to mimic a clean install of the system. When exploring the options on Internet, I discovered an option to clean de drives completely.
Currently I have 2 drives, my C unit where the OS and most of my software is, and a D drive, in which I have my music, documents, videos and other files not relevant for the system itself.
If I select the options to clean the drives, will it delete both drives or just the C drive?

So I just turned my computer on and noticed that my desktop had been reset to the default wallpaper and all of my folders had been deleted. I also realised that my documents and pictures had been deleted. I tried to run a game and my save files had been deleted.
I restarted my computer and everything was normal.
Is this an issue computer or just Windows 10 in general?

I've upgraded my Windows 8.1 Pro (activated with DreamSpark key) to the Windows 10 Build 10162 and then to the latest Build 10240. Now, I want to do PC reset. To complete that, I'll need a installation media, so I've already downloaded ESD of Build 10240 and converted to ISO.
Will my PC stay activated after the reset? Will my PC stay activated when I upgrade to RTM and do clean install via ISO when it's available?

Newish computer, recently upgraded to Windows 10.
Trying to do a PC Reset via the settings to wipe clean to sell it. When I click Reset in the Recovery menu of the Settings, I get a scrolling wheel for a second or so, and then nothing. It's as if something on the computer is blocking the computer from being reset.
When I try from the Advanced startup, it goes through a normal restart but doesn't do anything else.
I know that in the week that my mother had this computer, she managed to get a couple viruses from 3rd party search bars that she was prompted to download which were causing issues. I wonder if I didn't get it all cleaned off and there is something that won't let the computer reset?
