View 1 RepliesI have an install with a low end Celeron-based Acer laptop that serves mostly as a desktop, hooked to a big monitor via VGA cable. Unfortunately the laptop must be opened to get to the power button.
with auto-arrange etc UNCHECKED [so, supposedly icons do what you make them do], the icons will rearrange themselves in a random fashion, resize differently, "ghost-out", etc. it really is maddening because user-installed Apps and just simple file paths are impossibly difficult for non-tech users on windows 10 [and its immediate predecessor].
what is the PERMANENT cure for this? I see a good number of threads on MS boards re: this problem on 8.0 and 8.1, none of which are encouraging. seems microsoft is pretty clueless about it - This does not happen on all systems of course, but in my experience, connectiing Intel HD-family graphics to external monitors is a roll of the dice [pretty solid with AMD or Nvidia]. Sometimes no sync at all occurs, sometimes resolution is difficult to set [impossible for non-tech users], primary display designation is lost/reassigned, etc...
I have an HP Pavilion with Windows 10. I'm pretty basic with computers, and I don't know how to make a home screen icon for a website. I go to a website that I like, usually on Chrome, and now I want it to be an icon so I can just click on it tomorrow.
View 1 RepliesA desktop icon suddenly appeared on my desktop.. If I delete it, the whole desktop is also deleted... The desktop folder on the drive, does not contain that icon...
View 7 RepliesHow do you make the desktop in Windows 10 scroll right to left instead of up and down. I just don't like it going up and down. Other than this I like everthing in Windows 10 except I cant figure out how to get rid of the Xbox app. It was a smooth transition from Windows 7 and no problems
View -1 RepliesI have been trying to make a desktop folder invisible. I have had invisible folders since XP...
On Windows 10 I have an issue of the 'blank icon' being black on my desktop.
I just don't get it.. I have tried clearing my thumbnail cache, all the 'blank icon' options, made my own icon, and have been scouring the internet.
If there a way to make the button to peak at the desktop (to the right of the notification area) bigger? It seems like it's about 1/2 the size (or less?) than it was in Windows 7. Is there a way to make that bigger again? I've currently got a "Show Desktop" button on the taskbar, but I'd rather just use the one by the notification area.
View 2 RepliesI have had W10 for three days and it has been sending me mad. The text has been resizing and windows closing randomly. Particularly bad when typing. Finally found the cause. The new feature which allows two finger use on the mouse pad is a nightmare while typing. My wrist or fingers touch the pad briefly and then when another thing touches it then all sorts of things happen. So as I typed the text kept changes size. I found myself changing the text size back every few minutes.
It took me some time to find the problem and disable the two finger ability. It might be nice to have if I am editing pictures but it is very difficult to get too. The control panel is difficult to find. It is not in the menu.
I seem to have spent most of three days disabling everything in W10. I seem to have paid for something which is useless.
In Windows 7, I knew how to turn off the annoying (to me) feature that windows were automatically maximized when moved to the edge of the screen. This option no longer seems to be present in the 'ease of access' settings.
View 3 RepliesSince last update, my fonts, when browsing is really wierd... Some places, the font gets alot smaller, but not everything is this way... This is both on Chrome and Edge
View 1 RepliesI don't know if the right place, but I'll share my problem. Last days I resized my C: drive in order to put Linux on my free space and dual boot. Since then my windows lost his activation, gave me eroor code 0xC004F012 and don't want to shut down - just log off.
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to work out how to get the below icons larger:
I'm sure when I upgraded, they were twice the size ... but for now they seem to have got a lot smaller. I've had a look around, and can't seem to find a way to make them larger (I have 20/20 vision, but even I'm having trouble seeing which icons are which )
I have gone through the synaptic touch pad settings several times and and I still have to use cat paw touches on the keyboard and touch pad to keep the window from randomly zooming. Also the search window keeps popping up randomly and I have to tap the touch pad to remove it.
View 8 RepliesAfter my Windows 10 upgrade was finished I created a "Recovery drive" on a 32 GB flash drive and it filled the drive to 26.8 GB. I just finished a clean install on my hard disk with all unallocated space and decided to make a new "recovery drive" on the old flash drive when I was finished. I did "check" to include system files and the process took quite a while but only 3.5 GB are now being used on the flash drive. Why such a difference in data this time than before? Is this drive okay?
View 1 Repliesincluded a pic from my Start Menu. I would make the tekst in the LEFT PANE look smaller. Is there a way to do so?
View 2 RepliesAny open or minimized applications/folders etc are made smaller and pushed into the top left corner when I switch sources on my amplifier to go from watching the PC to any other source and then back again to the PC.
I've just switched sources now and Chrome, which was maximised is still maximised, but a random open folder which was maximised is now 1/8th of the size of the screen and pushed all the way into the top left corner.
If utorrent is maximised, nothing happens, if it is anything but maximised it gets crushed into the top left corner.
I'm using a Samsung tv and Sony amp, but I don't think it has anything to do with them.
I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro and find that the 'Show Desktop' rectangular space at the far right side of the notification area is missing although posted desktop images Windows 10 have the same rectangular space. However, if I hover the cursor over the screen border in that area for about 5 seconds the desktop appears and if I click on the border it remains otherwise it reverts to the previous screen. So, I assume that the 'Show Desktop' functionality is working OK even though the rectangular space is missing. How to restore the rectangular space?
View 3 RepliesI have researched but nothing works. I have One Drive from Windows 7 and the uploads I did, but no icon for Windows 10.
View 3 RepliesWhenever i rename a desktop shortcut, the icon turns white and never comes back, this started after i upgraded to windows 10?
View 1 RepliesI have Windows 10 on a 2TB HDD with about 1TB of the HDD full. I would like to migrate Windows to an 80GB SSD but I can't find anyway to do this without cloning the entire drive, which I can't do because there is too much content on the HDD. Is there any way to migrate Windows to a different drive whilst keeping all user files and installed applications on the old drive so I can have two drives in my system, the SSD for boot and the HDD for storage and applications.
View 4 RepliesI would like to create a shortcut icon on my Windows 10 desktop to execute the following command:c:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Thunderbird hunderbird. exe -safe-mode.I seem to recall that this was easy in earlier versions of Windows. (As were many other actions!).
View 4 RepliesI have lots of shortcut icons on my desktop for files and programs. That means 2 or 3 columns of small icons. It would appear the Win 10 will only allow 1 column. I've messed with the icon spacing and vertical spacing (regedit) and the vertical spacing works but horizontal spacing seems to have no effect.
View 9 RepliesI'm used to tweaking the values in HKCUControlPanelDesktopWindowsMetricsIcon Spacing in previous version of Windows, but it appears to work a bit differently in Win10.
Changing the Icon Spacing from the default of -1560 to, say -2000, gives more room for the icon title to spread out, but doesn't actually move the icons. e.g. I have some icons with long titles wrapped on two lines. By increasing the value to -2000 the titles now sit on a long single line, but the icons haven't moved. In fact, the icon titles now will overlap if I have two long-titled icons next to each other.
{Edited to add:]
Oh, for heavens sake! I had done several Icon Spacing tweaks in the registry and rebooted several times but nothing changed except the titles expanding wider. Then, I decide to move some icons around. Poof! The entire desktop grid adjusted the icon spacing, and rearranged the icons! Go figure.
Is there a way to make W10 move an Icon from the Taskbar to the Desktop? I could do this in W8.1 although I was using Start8.
This has become a minor issue with W10 since when I install an update to a program (reinstall a newer version) the "old" Icon in the Taskbar becomes unusable. That would not be a problem EXCEPT on two of my 6 W10 machines the install does not create a new Desktop Icon automatically!?
Also, is it possible to create a Desktop Icon from the All Apps list. I find the "Pin to Start" and "Pin to Taskbar" by right clicking on the program but the "Show Icon on Desktop" feature is not there or at least I can't find it?
my virtual desktop icon missing in W10
see screen shot attached.
I can get desktops using Windows/Tab
With win 8.1 all I had to do was right click the page and I was shown a small dialogue box asking me if I wanted to put the site on the desktop. Why did they change this?
