Right Click On Shortcuts And Exe Causes Screen To Blink - No Menu

Aug 19, 2015

In any account, including Administrator ones AND the Administrator account:

If I right-click a desktop shortcut, the screen blinks black. No sign of the context menu.If I locate an .exe in its folder and right-click that, the screen blinks black. The folder closes. No context menu.

Related, perhaps: In a Standard account, if I try to turn down the UAC settings (so my son can use Steam without me logging him in each time), the Windows accepts my administrator password, then ignores my changes.

I have recorded the blink and played it back frame by frame. No message or anything appears. The screen merely goes black.Windows 10 otherwise seems to work fine.I have done virus scans etc.

All this makes it very hard to set up Standard accounts that are any use.

Mouse Won't Click On Start Menu - Some Other Random Items Won't Accept Left Click Either

Jul 30, 2015

Updated my Win 7 Pro x64 computer last night to Windows 10. Now can't click on the start menu items or really any windows menu. Some other random things won't accept a left click either. Chrome seems to respond just fine but not firefox. I'm puzzled. I have a Razer Naga 2014 but tried a Cheap little logitech mouse with same results. I also logged into my machine Via team viewer from work and left click still doesn't work on things.

I'd be totally fine doing a fresh install but not sure of the procedure yet to have it activate without installing windows 7 first then doing the upgrade again.

How To Pin IE Shortcuts To Start Menu

Dec 24, 2015

UPDATE: See Edwin's method in Post #4 for IE it is much easier than mine. But for other browsers use this method.

Since you cannot just drag and drop a shortcut to a web site into the app menu the way I do it is to create a short cut on my desktop then copy it into the start menu:

%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms

You'll need admin privileges to do this. Then open the start menu and put the mouse pointer on it, right click and select pin to start. If you want to do this for all users use this path:

%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms

You can create a folder just for there shortcuts or just let them stand on their own. Be aware that if you ever delete the folder and or the shortcut then the pinned short(s) will cease to work.

Pin Shortcuts To Start Menu

Jul 25, 2015

What am I missing here? I can pin exe's with a right click but trying to do this with a desktop shortcut does nothing. If it is not allowed, why does the context menu have 'Pin to start' in it?

Start Menu Missing Shortcuts

Aug 31, 2015

I finally upgraded from Win7 to Win10. The start links (Documents to Videos) all come up as "Missing Shortcut".

After about a minute or so, it changes to the "Problem with Shortcut"

For Videos, I clicked the "Delete it" option and it completely removed it.

I have tied many combinations of turning on/off the links in settings and restarting to no avail. Also, the folder in app data it refers to does not exist under any profile.

I'd rather not fill up the Tiles area with these links when they could be there vice blank space.

Pinning (document) Shortcuts To Start Menu?

Aug 31, 2015

Is it possible to have a button on the start menu that will open Wird and load a Word Document rather then having to click on the "Word" Icon and then open up a particular document? When I tried to drag a shortcut to the Word document to the start menu to pin it there, I get a red X icon.

Modify Start Menu - Add Shortcuts And Folders

Aug 28, 2015

I read many people complain about the Start Menu on Windows 10, specifically about not being able to modify it like they could in Windows 7.

You actually can modify it, pretty easily. Simply open This PC, then click in the address bar and type "start menu". You can then go into Programs and create new folders, shortcuts, etc. And any shortcuts you create can be also pinned as a tile from the All Apps section. And you can have Cortana launch them too.

Shortcuts To Folders / Files In Start Menu Search Box

Sep 15, 2015

When I Installed Win 10, if I wanted to quickly access one of those 6 Win 10 PC 'Folders' (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos), I would just had to type in the folder in the start menu search box, press Enter and it would access the folder. As soon as I changed the folders' original location, this 'typing shortcut' did not work anymore.is it even possible to make typing shortcuts to folders or files in the search box? (i.e typing "x" for a specific folder named "y")

Cannot Add Shortcuts To Quick Links Area Of Start Menu

Sep 24, 2015

Back in 7, my start menu had stuff pinned to it. I could click, say, Visual Studio and a submenu would slide out with recently opened projects on it so I could not only open it, but open a specific project.

I pinned VS to my Start Menu, but it doesn't have that functionality. I thought OK, well, maybe if it's on the left side of the start menu where the recently used stuff was. I can't figure out though how to get a shortcut over there (I believe that area is called "quick links"). I don't even have "recently used" anymore. I saw one can add folders from a list, but I don't need that. Right clicking the pinned VS in the "tiles" area doesn't give me that program specific context so that's not really useful.

Search Function Finds NO Programs Or Start Menu Shortcuts / Desktop

Jan 11, 2016

I recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".

I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.

Start Menu Button Right Click Menu Fails

Sep 4, 2015

I have just upgraded to Win10 and most items on the "Power User Command Menu" do not work if the menu is accessed by right-clicking the Start Menu button on the Task Bar. The only items that do work are Search, Run, Shut down and Desktop. If the menu is accessed by the other means, the menu items work fine.

I've tried SFC and a day searching the web with no luck.

The computer is a Toshiba laptop running an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5500 with 4 Gb of memory. I don't know what the proper name for the "Power User Command Menu" may be, but that's the only way I've seen it referenced elsewhere.

Customization :: All App Shortcuts / How To Stop Some Shortcuts From Pinning To Start

Folders in question

--C:UsersRitaAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms

Right so, I have been trying to create application shortcuts in the "all apps" of the start menu. I've had success with some shortcuts. Here is a screenshot, with an example of what I am talking. The following shortcuts are behaving as I want them to,The following shortcut is not behaving as I want it to.. it keeps pinning to start despite all my attempts to unpin it and recopy to the folder, they are all shortcuts to executable files. Why is windows handling some of them differently?

Start Menu Right-Click Menu Does Not Work

Jan 12, 2016

When I right-click the Start Menu (Win10Pro) and the menu pops up, selecting any of the menu items does not do anything. The menu just closes.I ran sfc /scannow and the log is attached. There are a bunch of errors based on 'duplicate owners' and something about 'opencl.dll' possibly is corrupt at the very end of the log.

I ran a driver uninstaller app found on this forum and then downloaded and installed the recent NVIDIA GeForce drivers for my dual GT640 cards (3 monitors). After rebooting, Geforce indicated a new updated driver and I downloaded and installed that as well. The only menu items that will work when right-clicking Start Menu are the "Run" and "Search" options.  Control Panel, Event Viewer, Command Prompt, etc. do nothing. The only way to start these items is to do so via the search box or run box.

Right Click On Start Menu

Aug 1, 2015

I have a very strange problem in Win 10 Pro RTM:

when I right click on the start menu and the conext menu appears like this:

the only links that works are the first four starting from the botom (desktop, shutdown, run & find), when I click on any other option in the menu nothing happens.

It's not a terrible problem because I can access to the same links in other ways but this menu is really usefull.

The first 2 days after upgrade from win 8.1 this menu worked OK but suddenly stop working. In the middle I installed several programas, uninstal others and update some drivers. But I don't know when exactly start this behaiviour.

Right Click Context Menu

Sep 15, 2015

I just upgraded my laptop from windows 7 to windows 10 and everything went very smoothly on the outside but I'm finding some hiccups as I go along. When I right click the start menus I do get the context menu with all the shortcuts to various apps. But when I click on, say for instance, Control Panel, instead of going to "Control Panel" I get a dialog box opening saying "Express Zip Free Version" This free version of Express Zip is licensed for non-commercial use only; Please confirm that:" then there are two options to click on and I'll only include the first one for sake of brevity, "Certify that this program is for non-commercial use only". Why in the name of all that is good does this dialog open and not a program from the context menu?

Right Hand Click Menu Missing

Sep 4, 2015

I updated to Windows 10 a week or so ago, and since then I've noticed that I no longer seem to have a right-hand click menu function: on Chrome/Explorer, it opens the link I'm clicking on in another tab or window, but on everything else either nothing at all happens or the scrolling arrows appear. Why this is, and how to get it back?

(to be clear: I'm talking about the menu that has copy/paste/select all etc on standard programs, or thesaurus/font etc on Microsoft Word.)

No Preview Function In Right-click Menu

Aug 12, 2015

It's something I use a lot to view pics, photos etc (they open by default in Photo-Shop, but I don't want that to happen just to look at a file) and it's a one-click operation to open Windows Photo Viewer to start a slide-show or do some basic editing.

I can select 'Open With' every time I want to preview, and then select Windows Photo Viewer but that gets very tiresome very quickly. I can't set it as the default or I then lose the Photo-Shop option when I click 'Open'.

Any setting or registry mod that I can use to restore the Preview option??? I have looked in the Tutorials section, without success.

Why No (close All Windows) In Right Click Menu

Jan 4, 2016

I choose to have every folder open into a new window but frequently find myself with 15 to 20 windows open by the time I'm through with what I was doing. In Win 7 I could right click on the window icon in the taskbar and choose "close all windows". I can't find that option exists in Win 10. Which means I have to click on the "x" to close each of the 20 windows.

I wonder why something so useful was removed in Win 10 and is there any way to add that functionality?
