SSD Running Out Of Space Prematurely
Sep 21, 2015
I use a 120gb ssd on W10 build 10547 and always get rid of Windows old files for earlier builds. When I add up all the space used when C drive is opened in a new window, it comes to 31gb. Trouble is that the disk has actually 88.2gb used, confirmed also by Partition wizard. AMD uses 2gb, docs/downloads 9gb, windows 14gb, recovery 5gb, 32/64 programs 1gb, it really should be a slim system.

I have a HP Stream 11 laptop I bought from Walmart, it came with Windows 8.1 and I went through the charade of upgrading from 8.1 to 10 so it would validate they key and then I immediately did a clean install. Sadly with this laptop, it only has a 32 GB eMMC drive (non-upgrageable), when formatted it is brought down to 28 GB, after the clean install I was at 15 GB, I have installed very very few and rather lightweight applications that at most take up 1 GB. So left with 14 GB, what I have noticed since then... it seems as the updates rolls out, I'm starting to run out of space, I just did the "November 1511" update and I am now down to 5.75 GB free. Is there anything I can do to slim down Windows 10? or Should I just downgrade to a different OS?

Just bought a new laptop for my wife, it's an HP Stream 11. It is suitable for her light needs, basically web browsing and some light document work, word processing etc. She's not even going to store music or photos on there. A few very light files only. So it comes with 8.1 and I think, awesome, I can install 10 straight away (I've not used 10 yet so was quite excited by this).
However when trying to install it's telling me I'm about 2 gig short of enough space for 10. I have about 9 gig free and it wants about 11. The hard drive is 20 gig. I've installed Windows 8.1, removed a shedload of apps she doesn't need, removed some programs that she doesn't need (for example McAfee) and I'm at the stage where there's literally nothing on there but an 8.1 that is as barebones as I think I can make it. Looking at the programs installed, even if I removed Office and some HP crap, it will only get me another 500 MB. Is Windows 10 on this PC simply not possible?
Does it need the space just for the install process itself? Or on an ongoing basis? Because I have a hard drive I can plug in, in the short term, but she's not going to want it attached forever as it will be a little unwieldy for a laptop!

Can the C: drive be part of a pool, having all drives (including the c: drive) look like 1 drive? If so, how do I do that? I created a storage space, but it made me set it up as drive D:, and I see no way to combine it with C:.
Next: I want to have the C:/boot drive be part of the redundancy equation. I plan to use Parity. I can see where it would be if all drives looked like 1, but I don't see how it would be if not part of the pool.

Although not a specifically Win10 message the regularity with which the message appears since updating to Win10 is beginning to annoy me. My set up has a small allocation to a recovery drive for the PC, a relic from a prior setup. I could probably delete the partition and merge it with another but for now it doesn't use up much space and happy to leave it except... Every so often I get a system message that says I have low disc space on this drive (in fact no space at all) and I want to stop the message from appearing, I know it is low on disc space and don't need to be told every half hour. how to stop it?
Also I do need to get into the depths of the OpSystem to start to understand privileges etc

For various reasons I decided to completely format my hard drive and partitions when installing windows 10, to give it a clean start. Now when I'm in windows 10 I have 2 drives, at 465gb each and a third one with 40mbs allocated as Dell Utilities and 930gb of unallocated space. No matter what I try I cannot link that unallocated space to anything. Even trying to create a simple volume out of it falls down by saying "the size of the extent is less than the minimum". I've tried extending my existing drives and using it but it throws up the same error or something about not enough space.

How to update a windows 7 to 10 on a Intel NUC with only 32gb of mSATA of SSD. The effective memory space of the SSD is about 28gb. I do have an USB external HDD which I use as a bootup disc/installer, but the limited SSD space in the NUC is a challenge.
What is the best way to proceed? How much space do I have to free up in the old Windows 7 so the installation will proceed properly??

only 9 gigabytes of disk space appear to have been freed after deleting roughly 18 gigabytes worth of old Windows files via Windows Disk Cleanup. Since the Windows.old folder still exists even after the cleanup, I decided to check the folder properties to see if the folder still took up some space, but it was completely empty, save for a few empty subfolders that I didn't have permission to delete myself. I tried Disk Cleanup a second time, but it did not give me the option to delete old Windows files.

I have upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Now, my C drive is almost full with 714GB occupied by "System and reserved". I was in an assumption that, Windows 10 was suppose to take less space.

I've installed a new 500 GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO in my system. I want to clone only the "used" portion of my 2TB HDD (about 370 GB) to the SSD for faster performance when I boot, run programs, etc.
I'm a bit of a noob, and when I go into "Disk Management" one option is to shrink the largest volume on my HDD. I'm thinking that if I shrink it down to about 370 GB from the current 1.8 TB maybe then I can go ahead and clone using, say, Macrium Reflect. Once the cloning is done, I want to boot from the SSD, back it up, and then wipe the HDD and use it as a mass storage disk.
FYI, the HDD is encrypted by Bitlocker.
Is it as simple as that? What issues do I need to watch out for?

Bought a 8.1 desktop last month. The store upgraded to Win10 for me. It came with a 1TB drive that now says it has 0 disk space. Something is going on. Ever since I got the first "running out the disk space" warning today, the machine has really slowed down. I opened File Explorer and sure enough, it said I had 0 space on my C drive. I cleaned up some temp files and rebooted. Now File Explorer says I have 211MB of the 1TB free instead of 0. Is this a partition issue, a Win10 upgrade bug or ?

So I recently bought a Razer Blade 14" 2013 and I looked through the storage in the Windows 10 Settings. I tried using windirstat and it showed nothing of 10+ gigs in size.

I bought an HP stream to take to class with me because it just is too ridiculous to keep carrying around my 18.4" gaming laptop. Grew up a little and decided I didn't want to be "that guy". Anyways, I upgraded the stream to Windows 10 right out of the box. After the upgrade, literally 6 gb of free disk space. Now, I realize that 32 gb is a small SSD, but there's no way Windows 10 is 26gb. And yes, I've deleted Windows.old and literally everything that's not essential to running the PC. I need some sort of utility that uninstalls everything, literally only asking me what files I want to keep, and nuking away everything else. A clean install is possible but I would rather not, since I already activated Office and set everything up how I like it.

I have a 240gb SSD with Windows 10 installed. After selecting all the programs to determine the amount of space it should take I only saw 82gb yet I only have 44gb of free space left. At first it was only missing about 20gb of space which I thought would be a system restore point however now I'm actually running out of storage. What is taking up my hard drive space or how to determine it?

I want to put a Seagate 4tb sshd in to my PC as a boot drive so I can install Windows 10 Pro when it's available. But, as I recall, Windows 7 max boot drive space without partition was 2tb. Does Windows 10 have the same limitation?

I recently did a full reset with window 10. I did the option to remove everything. I have a SSD that is 250gb. After the process was finish I look back and I only have 143gb free space. I have a feeling my old files are still there but no where to be found. I already deleted the windows old folder. How can I reclaim that lost space.
