Search Bar Only Searches Indexed Locations

Feb 8, 2016

The search function of the Start menu is not working as it should. When I enter a program's or setting's name, it retrieves results almost immediately, but if I search a document or another file (like capture.png or settings.cfg), it fails to find it.

I've tried running the search within the File Explorer to make sure it's not related to something else. This way I can retrieve results almost immediately. Tried enabling/disabling Cortana, and checked the taskmanager. SearchUI is shown running when running a search, and turns suspended when I'm not searching anything.

Then I tried indexing the locations of those files that Start Search fails to find. After that, Start Search can find those files too. But here's the catch: I'm running the OS on an SSD and I don't want to turn it on since it's pointless & reduces the lifespan of the drive.

So my question is: Is it how start search supposed to work? Does it only search indexed locations and apps&settings?

Can't Search Custom Indexed Folders

Feb 23, 2016

I have a few folders located at the root of C: and D: that I've added to the search index. Unlike folders located in my user directory, these custom folders are apparently being excluded from searches. Is there anything I can do to make these folders searchable?

Some Control Panel Options Are Not Indexed

Sep 7, 2015

I have a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro on my desktop with all updates installed. I like to use Cortana to quickly get to settings and apps, but I noticed for some reason I can't find every system setting via Cortana. For example, searching for "updates" on my wife's laptop brings up "Check for updates" and takes her to Windows Update, but when I search for "updates" on my desktop it only finds web results. Even doing a search for "updates" from within the system settings window doesn't find the setting.

After some searching I believe I've found the problem. The indexing for settings search appears to be in this folder:

C:Users{user}AppDataLocalPackageswindows.immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n1h2txyewyLocalStateIndexe dSettingsen-US. When I search for "updates" in this folder on my desktop there are no results, but on my wife's laptop there is a result for "Check for updates." It appears my index is missing several features for some reason. How can I fix this? Does rebuilding the index from the advanced Indexing Options also rebuild the system settings index or is there a separate process for this?

Customization :: Use Different Taskbar Locations On Different Displays

Aug 7, 2015

When I first upgraded, the taskbar on my first display was located on the left side of the display and the taskbar on my second display was located on the bottom. I liked this. But I wanted to see how I'd like having both on left hand side. I went into taskbar properties. `Taskbar location on screen` was set to `custom` and I changed it to `left`.

I decided I didn't like this and wanted to change it back. But `custom` no longer appeared in this drop down and I couldn't find any other option to change them separately. Is there any way to change it back? Perhaps a specific registry key?

How To Change SAVE AS Locations Used To Use PLACES BAR EDITOR

Aug 31, 2015

I have custom PLACES in left pane of SAVE AS dialog boxes that I setup in Windows 7 and carried over to 8.1 then 10. I used program called PLACES BAR EDITOR which I think utilized Group Policy Editor or maybe gpedit was just an alternative way to do same thing. Regardless I cannot find how to do this in W10. gpedit is gone and PLACES BAR EDITOR will not install.

attached is shot of SAVE AS window, note the bottom has no icon because I deleted that location and want to update it to a different location.

Can't Change Folder Locations - Access Denied

Nov 27, 2015

I just bought a 500gb samsung 850 evo, transferred C, and am trying to use the old 1tb WD for mass storage.

I decided I'd put my videos and pictures there, so I changed the locations to inside folders in E... now instead of saying "Videos" and "Pictures" it says E: and E:, and when you click them it just takes you to directly to the drive, not inside the folder.

Now when I go to change it back to default location I get "The folder can't be moved here, access denied"

how to fix it.

Apps :: Install 32 And 64 Bit Java In Alternate Locations Working Both At Once

Feb 10, 2016

I reinstalled Windows to try to fix an issue, but it did not work. I am installing my programs to an alternate drive, and would like to install Java there as well. I know about the JRE_HOME environment variable, but it can only point to 32 OR 64-bit Java. Is there any way to have both running simultaneously without need to switch the variable to the 64-bit path? I think that this does happen when I install to the default location, so how can I do that?

Pictures Folder Now Named As Videos After Changing Target Locations

My 'Pictures' folder is now called 'Videos' and I can't rename it back to Pictures again. This is because its a user folder or 'shell' folder I've read. How to change it back?

Security :: Windows Defender Won't List Excluded Files And File Locations

Oct 11, 2015

I have selected certain file types / folders and locations in Windows Defender on Windows 10 that were added to the exclusions lists...

Previously I could go to Windows Defender and see what files, folders or extensions I had excluded but now they have disappeared....

All I see is the add buttons which work as intended when I want to add a folder etc etc.... But then they are not listed anywhere so that I can remember what I have excluded or not....

How to get that visible again, is there a setting in the registry that needs to be fixed?

This is what I should see where, below the red arrows I should see the excluded files/folders including their path etc etc [see image below]

but I see nothing..

Yet if i go to the registry as indicated below...

File and file location exclusions are stored in the registry key below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows DefenderExclusionsPaths

File type exclusions are stored in the registry key below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows DefenderExclusionsExtensions

Processes exclusions are stored in the registry key below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows DefenderExclusionsProcesses

they are all listed there....?

I have to say that windows defender is excluding folders/files and etc etc, that I have selected during its scans, but I cant see the excluded items in the Windows Defender as per image of my Exclusions section below...

Cannot Search By Typing On Start Menu Or Using Search Spyglass?

Oct 20, 2015

Win 10 Enterprise. Worked fine for a couple of days, but now I cannot seem to bring up the start menu and start typing anything. It will not search. I also tried in the search box or spyglass... I just click on it and nothing happens. It is a major inconvenience. I don't want to do a restore and keep my files, because there is a HUGE list of applications I will then need to restore. I also tried to click on Cortana, but clicking the app does nothing, doesn't even bring it up.

I tried re-indexing search items, I tried the search troubleshooter. I have rebooted, I have installed all updates. Someone on another forum said kill the Cortana task... well there isn't one running.

My Laptop:

searching for "add or remove" brings up nothing, even in the settings search

My friend's Laptop:

When Boot Up PC Cannot Search In Search Bar

Oct 10, 2015

Sometimes when I boot my PC I cannot search in the Search Bar, I have to restart the system then it usually works fine again until the next reboot.I have decided to rebuild the index to just the things I use regularly (I know how to navigate through the system so I don't usually need to search for much, it's purely ease).

These are the things which have been excluded: $SysReset; AMD; Fraps; history; inetpub; Intel; MSOCache; NPE; Perflogs; Program Files (x64); Program Files; ProgramData; Appdata; Appdata; WindowsIt has currently (after 1 hour) indexed 4,000 items. Do any of these things need to be indexed, Program Files for example? If they do not need to be then I probably will exclude them.

Problem: When I click the "Search the web and Windows " box I get "We can't connect to web search right now but you can still search your stuff. Make sure you are currently connected to the internet."

I am connected to the internet and if I type a "web question" into the box it opens Edge and give me the answer. Edge stopped working so I reset it with "Reset_Microsoft_Edge" from this forum, now it is working again, but I have this new problem.

Search And Save

Aug 20, 2015

I'm not tech savvy nor do I pretend to understand much of the content in this forum; however, I'm trying really hard to like Windows 10 (Edge) and think I'm missing something. I came from Win7 and have spent the last three days using Windows 10. I do a lot of research and loved the fact I could highlight a word or phrase, RC on search "Google" and have instant results. In addition, if I wanted to save something to the desktop....RC and save to desktop...very simple. Am I correct in thinking I now need several convoluted steps to get the same things done if I can do them at all? I know I can use a different search engine and get the job done but Edge is reputed to be faster.
