Search Does Not Display Any Settings Such As Windows Update
Aug 10, 2015When searching for settings from either the control panel or the settings app, nothing appears. See attached image.

View 3 Replieswhen I try to find Windows Update via Windows Search (or via search inside Settings window), no such option is found. It's similar with some other settings.
It worked fine, but now it does not. I've tried rebuilding search index, but with no luck.
how to fix it?
I tried to change the windows update settings and I can't! I get a message saying that some settings are managed by my system administrator! I am the only user in this laptop with administrator privileges.
How comes that I can't change the settings?
I do not want Windows 10 to update and restart my PC automatically - I want to decide when that is done.
In the Settings it is fixed at 'Automatic' update.
I have followed two suggestions to alter the setting that searches turned up, but neither have worked so far.
NOTE:
Here are the 2 Methods I tried.
Everything went well on the Win10 installation, but the only problem is that when I go to access the settings tab in the start menu, it just flashes briefly like it tries to open the settings window, and then disappears, so I can't access anything in the settings. No update checking, just nothing. Everything else seems to work... I can also access the system info window and it shows Windows 10 to be activated.
Edit: I can get to the control panel, and I can see Windows Update, but I get this error message when I try to click on it:
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.
How to setup windows search to not search my personal folders but only desktop apps and settings...
View 1 RepliesI Just bought a new XPS 13 (lowest end model) that came with Microsoft 10 pre-installed (bought it from Microsoft store). my problem is that I cannot search for settings in the main search bar or even the settings search bar, the settings search bar simply doesn't work at all, and to double check that this wasn't a windows 10 issue I tried it out on a friend's Laptop and it worked fine. I took screenshots of both my Laptop and my friend's.
My Laptop:
searching for "add or remove" brings up nothing, even in the settings search
My friend's Laptop:
as you can see it works fine on my friend's laptop bringing up the settings i was searching for
The title says everything. I rebuilt the index, moved it to another disk, rebuilt again without any result: no results in the search window.
Cortana is off and web searching is off. Even if web searching is on, there are no search results in the window.
This has never happened in any other Windows version since Windows 3.1 for Workgroups!
I have a Toshiba that I upgraded from Windows 7 Vista to Windows 10, but has no Bluetooth capabilities whatsoever, yet every time I shut down and turn my computer back on, whether it may be an update or just manual, I end up in the corner of settings with Bluetooth search on. I can't disable it because there is no disable button.
View 5 RepliesSince updating to Windows 10 I have a display settings issue. I set my display setting to 1920x1080 (recommended) apply and check 'keep settings'. When I shut down and restart the display has changed to 1366x768. Happens every time I restart.
View 3 RepliesWhen I try to customize my font size display settings (see attached), they revert back to default after a reboot.
I did a fresh install of Win 10, and this was the first thing I checked, just to make sure nothing was interfering with it.
I have just downloaded and installed Windows 10. All is good except the default resolution seems too large. I have tried all the options available in Control Panel/Display/Screen Resolution but none work or are in proportion except the basic default 1024 x 768 setting though this is way to 'big' for me.
My monitor, an HP w1907v, appears to want 1440 x 900 at 60 Hz but all resolutions options available in Win 10 are at 64 Hz - not sure if this is the problem? The installed graphics driver is the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, a driver which the self-checking tool on the Nvidia website states is the correct driver for my old onboard graphics (Nvidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430).
I think I need to do something a little out of the ordinary. I cannot find a better driver but the resolution options are pants. Can I change the Hz from 64 to 60 and if so how, and will this offer the right resolution options for my monitor?
I am having an issue with the Windows 10 machines that I have installed thus far. I do not use a screen saver, but use the power settings to turn off the display after a certain period of time. When the display goes off, it forces me to authenticate to get back on the computer. I have tried to shut off the screensaver, check, than uncheck the box for "On resume, display logon screen". No matter what I do, I cannot get this to NOT make me authenticate when reawakening the display.
I do run a domain at my house for background info. Been working on this for a few days now with no real progress.
I keep getting the above notice, but the display is set to the recommended setting. If I change the setting, I get a notice telling me it is incorrect and to set back to the recommended setting. Just a bug or can I turn off the notification some where. This has been going on for some time now.
View 3 RepliesWhen I open up the start menu it shows "We are getting search ready" forever. Worked until when I started my computer up today. I have attached a screenshot of this.
View 4 RepliesI have 4 laptops and 1 tablet eligible for Windows 10 upgrade and I upgraded them all.
On one system (Windows 10 Home, upgraded from a Windows 8.1 Home laptop I bought 6 months ago), Search in "Settings" never returned anything, I always got "No results for ...". For example, when I searched for "update", it showed:
On my other 4 systems, they correctly found some items:
At first I thought Windows 10 might have been building index for search, but 4 days after I upgraded to Windows 10 (and I use this computer everyday) it still does not work.
I got a Dell Venue 8 Pro and upgraded it to Windows 10. Everything ran smoothly. But after I decided to change the OS language into UK English, every time I search for settings in the settings app, the result is always "Search results aren't quite ready yet, but we're working on getting them together. Try again in a few minutes." Cortana search for settings also fails to yield any result, instead returns this quote "These results may be incomplete...". I have tried restarting the device but it did not work. I suppose this doesn't render my device useless but it's quite a bummer as I'm used to using search for what I want.
View 1 RepliesSo I just finished installing windows 10 and I'm having this issue where my display driver isn't being recognized and instead its now showing "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". Is there any way to bring back the old driver to its original resolution?
I have a Dell Inspiron N7110 and it seems like all the drivers are only compatible with Windows 8.1, how can I bypass that?
Also, another issue is that Windows Troubleshooter doesn't work. When I click on "Show more" it says that "Context: Restricted".
When I type in the search box in the task bar, the results are only from the web and the store and not my files, folders or my settings on my pc. This was working fine a few days ago.The example below is when I typed "device manager"...
View 5 RepliesIve updated my 8.1 today and now my start menu and indeed any metro apps wont start (ironic). If I create a new user their start menu is ok. I'm trying to revert back to my 8.1 installation but I cant because I cannot get to the revert option as it lives in the metro settings page NOT the standard control panel (why oh why are there two places with differing options, though in this case if it was all metro I couldnt access anything).
I cant revert using the new user as then it tells me I cant revert because I have added a user since upgrading? I cant start anything metro..I cant start anything from the right click start menu..I cant right click in file explorer (which I have to start via win-r) so its hard to get anything running as administrator..its a total fail of an upgrade for me.
Ever since the 1511 update last week, my SP3 display adapter crashes all the time. For example, if I'm using Windows Live Movie Maker, it will crash after only a few seconds of playback, then I have to close the app and reopen it, so I can get another 30 seconds of work done if I am lucky. If I'm using Blender or Repetier Host, it does better - lasts minutes instead of seconds, and doesn't always crash in those apps, but it does occasionally.
When I try to print to my 3D printer, it crashes sometimes, wasting plastic. I can get around that by doing the print from SD, but sometimes when it is something small, it's just easier to print from the host. Having increased problems (I used to get it occasionally, but not often) since updating to Win10 version 1511 last week?
Can't type anything in the "search the web and windows" bar at the bottom. Also used to be able to click on start and type the name of the application to run it Windows would find it - this is not working either. Nothing happens when you type.
View 8 RepliesI just upgraded to windows 10 and when I right click on the desktop and click on "Personalize" or "Display Settings" I get the following error message:"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action, please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel".
View 1 RepliesI managed to update the Windows to the last version, but now when I want to click here:
Task View opens, but search and start does not.
I had to take a photo because I cannot open paint, since I can't open the start menu.
After having lived with win10 for a month now, today I get the rude awakening. I was away for several days and booted up my pc this morning. I knew things weren't right when my screensaver was gone, replaced by the original one from the pc manufacturer. Upon further digging, I uncovered that each and every setting in the os and every single application was gone.
For example, when I opened outlook, it looked like the first time it was being opened. It had no email accounts set up. Same with lightroom, it was asking for the serial number and to set up a new catalog. Every setting is gone after four years of having everything run as I would like. I tried restoring to a point prior to the update but it failed.
If I could get things restored to before the update I'd probably be fine, but I don't see any way to do that. I think I am past the thirty days of rolling back to win7, because when I go to settings-restore, I don't see a roll back option.
Windows 10 updated itself two days ago. Since then, there are no icons on the task bar. Moving the mouse over the task bar produces gray squares where the icons should be. There are six squares for the six programs I normally access there. Right-clicking on a gray square provides access to the program. But the icon is not visible. Also, clicking on the Settings produces no result whatsoever. Right clicking allows pinning to start or task bar, neither of which happens. And, the time/date from the lower right corner is missing. Double clicking on the missing spot raises up a calendar with the time.
