Win7 could put in any word and Search would find the file it was in - lovely. Now Win10 doesn't do this - I have to search from the Documents folder - wastes a lot of time.
Many times Search won't fine a Word file unless I put a full stop afterwards. So 'Letter' not found but 'Letter.' found.
I'm talking about pressing <Windows> and typing in a shortcut name that lives in C:Users<name>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
Simply put, it doesn't find the shortcut. And I don't feel like rebuilding the entire index, since I doubt it will solve the problem. This was broken on 7, 8.1, and now 10. You'd think they could index a particular set of files from a particular folder.
Win 10 search is not working. I did get it to work by signing in as a local account and than back to signing in with a microsoft account. After a reboot it works. I wonder if it has something to do with Cortrana?
i have been using windows 10 for a while and i have decided to stick with it and i have decided to remove the windows old folder.
The problem is i am not able to find it with file explorer so i typed (free disk space) in the search bar it was then i realised that the search bar is not working?
Suddenly today my bottom left search box is not functional. When I click on nothing happens. Also can not type in the "Search the web and Windows" area.
Well I uninstalled Cortana and seriously i do not miss it one bit but now I don't have search windows is not working at all. This is sort of a prooblem for me, and I would be satisfied to reinstall the package Cortana for that reason but there is no information I can find that would solve this problem that I have not tried,
So I upgraded to W10 on my laptop (MSI GT-60), and ran into several problems, most annoying are these two:
1. Search button next to start isn't working, I tried to restart Windows Search in services, but that didn't work, the only solution is to create a new windows account, then it works, but that's just not ideal
2. A minor problem, but still - icons on my desktop cant be moved to the very bottom of my screen - it simply puts them back one "box" above, and that's just annoying, since I am used to having the trash can at the very bottom of my screen.
I've done sfc/scannow several times, tried to clean the PC with CCleaner, but nothing worked, the computer is otherwise running smoothly, but this is just annoying...
The windows 10 search box (My Stuff & Web) opens ok and brings up options against a typed in search keyword(s) BUT when an option is selected nothing happens, just returns to the open screen before the search was typed in.
just done a fresh install with the latest iso available. here it is the problem using search/cortana... (honestly i didn't care in the past, so i don't it's a normal beahaviour) -loggin in as administrator i can use the search and find settings like "system restore" or "personalize" -loggin in as limited user, no matter if local account or microsoft account, i can't search for settings and i get the message "incomplete" on top of the window... but all documents, images, start menu entries, etc. are showed perfectly. i googled around, but i couldn't find what happens to me. solutions are for completely broken search service. even create a new account or recreate the index didn't work.. is it normal for limited users?!? bug?!? i don't want reinstall again
Can't type anything in the "search the web and windows" bar at the bottom. Also used to be able to click on start and type the name of the application to run it Windows would find it - this is not working either. Nothing happens when you type.
I got a Dell Venue 8 Pro and upgraded it to Windows 10. Everything ran smoothly. But after I decided to change the OS language into UK English, every time I search for settings in the settings app, the result is always "Search results aren't quite ready yet, but we're working on getting them together. Try again in a few minutes." Cortana search for settings also fails to yield any result, instead returns this quote "These results may be incomplete...". I have tried restarting the device but it did not work. I suppose this doesn't render my device useless but it's quite a bummer as I'm used to using search for what I want.
When I start my computer, my Start Menu Search sometimes gets stuck in a start up or searching loop. The start menu itself works if I am just using my mouse to click icons. The issue is hitting the Windows button on my keyboard and typing. What is strange is that when this happens, if I log out then log in again, it starts up fine. While this is a workaround, I would like to solve the problem that is causing the problem.
I've tried re-indexing my entire computer based on a similar post I found here, but that did not work. Also - searching in a general Explorer window works fine showing the Windows Indexing does not appear to be the problem.
Recently, I have observed the Search feature of the File Explorer does not work (e.g., No items match your search). The folders I'm searching are indexed. I've tried rebuilding the index. I can even drill down to a folder I know contains the sought file and entering a search word in the file's name and search returns nothing.
For example, D:UsersClayton is indexed with no exclusions (all subdirectories included). I can search from D:UsersClaytonBooks for 'code'. That folder has many subfolders with files containing 'code' in the filename/contents. Yet search returns nothing.
D:UsersClaytonBooks is shared to my HomeGroup. I thought perhaps that might be a factor. However, even if I stop sharing, the results are the same. Most of my existing shared folders exhibit this behavior. However, if I add a folder to my Homegroup, search seems to work.
I just don't get it. I have successfully performed searches like this in Windows 7 all the time. Is Windows 10 just broken?
UPDATE: From my laptop (also Win10), I can search the Books HomeGroup share and find matches. However, going back to the desktop machine where the share resides, the same search fails.
UPDATE 2: On my desktop, if I remove D:UsersClayton from my indexed locations, searches work. This is repeatable. When indexed, search fails. When not indexed, search works.
I have 8 NAS drives on my network that is attached to my computer. Prior to upgrade to Windows 10 - from Windows 7 , I could go to file explorer and then search all the NAS drives for the info that I needed.
In Windows 10, I can see on the NAS drives under This PC but when I try to do a search, File Explorer will say working on it and it will never complete - it stops responding. Windows 10 is the latest version(november 2015).
All was working a couple of days ago, now today I can not access edge. double click nothing, went to task bar and cannot enter anything into the "Search the web and windows" then went to windows icon and do not see/get the apps
Tried to get to updates but now I cannot find them..
I tried the other day to search for a program on the start menu and it worked fine. I then set up Cortana for speech mode and all I get now when typing in the box are four blue dots scrolling at the top of the search box.
Sometime in December, 2015 my keyboard Windows button and my task bar Start menu and Search stopped working and without the ability to START I lost all the tiles. Windows has now become very cumbersome to use.
I have given up on Windows 10 and it's too late to recover Windows 7 (Windows 7 was great). Really wish this had not happened as I have been a Windows user since version 3.1. I guess I posted this here because I'm frustrated with the problem and need to air it out. Must buy a new PC.
I've got a system here which is acting up and I'm looking for ideas of how to resolve. Specs are:
Windows 10 Home (upgraded from W8.1) i7-3632 8GB RAM 64bit Inspiron 17R5720 laptop
Here's the problem: Everything works fine upon boot, but then, something happens over time, and things stop working.
Start left-click not working/Start right-click works Notification left-click not working/Notification right-click menu shows, but open action center doesn't work Quick Launch opens and works All icons pinned to the taskbar work including File Explorer Cortana and search not working - can't type in box Speaker icon left-click does not work, right-click does
This is all intermittent, and resolved with a reboot.
Something sets it off to stop working - perhaps the screensaver/lockscreen?
I have google.com.au set as home page as I mainly start browsing with a search. I first started to have problems last night when opening a new TAB for a new search and selecting Home page rather than using the Bing search on the new TAB. As soon as I start typing the search bar jumps to the top left corner and gives you a few suggestions, but after I finish entering my search word/term and click the search icon or press enter I can see internet traffic by the light on 3g modem but the page remains blank.
This is now starting to happen on my homepage when first opening Edge. I type in my search the search bar jumps to top left corner showing a couple of suggestions, but that's as far as it will go.
It does however work normally sometimes. Last night was the first time I came across this problem and I'm sure I've done searches this way since I started using EDGE without any problems.
I had my wife try the same thing (in EDGE) with the same result, though she uses Firefox as her default browser.
