Slow Start And Shutdown

Dec 4, 2015

W7 used to be fairly slow to start, about 2 minutes, but it shut down pretty quickly. Since "upgrading " to W10 my PC takes about 3 minutes to boot and even longer to shut down. Unless I can leave it, I usually just switch it off after about 30 seconds.

In other forums I have heard reports of boot times ranging from super fast (15-30 seconds) to funereal (5 - 10 minutes and then some). How to speed this up?

I was thinking that a clean re-install would be the best solution, but since this was the free upgrade, I don't have a copy to re-install. Maybe do a clean re-install of W7 and let MS upgrade it again (maybe!)

Slow Startup And Shutdown

Aug 20, 2015

I thought W7 was slow to boot, about 2 and a half minutes, but W10 is even longer, over 3 minutes.

W7 shut down fairly quickly, but W10 is taking as long, if not longer, than it does to start up.

Slow Boot And Shutdown Time

Jul 30, 2015

10 doesn't seem to be booting very nicely. What I mean is that it seems to be having a difficult time initilizing my SSD, so upon boot I get a blank black screen for anywhere from 60-180 seconds, where the primary drive activity LED is inactive, before it actually boots. This could be problematic, because I need it to both boot and shut down very quickly since I use my laptop for class; no sleep mode, either, because my system is old and batteries no longer work with my mobo.

Performance :: Slow Boot Time On SSD And Slow Desktop Icons Loading

Aug 6, 2015

I'm using an Intel SSD 240GB 520 series. Always loading very fast, i.e., about 8 seconds from cold boot.

Since windows 10 is installed, boot time is about 20 seconds and desktop icons take some time to refresh and load their images.

Regarding the boot time: I've narrowed it down the an unexplained read/write access on my external HDD eSATA which is used for backups, though currently all backup process are stopped.

When I remove / turn off my external HDD, boot time is about 8 seconds. I can't figure out why all of a sudden it required this access to this HDD.

As for the slow icon refresh.. how to fix this.

Computer Won't Shutdown Or Sleep

Aug 11, 2015

I have installed W10 twice using the update feature. Everything work fine except when I want to shutdown or put the machine to sleep by clicking on those options, the machine makes noise like the HD is working. It then just shuts down and reboots again. The only way I can shut it off is by using the button on the computer.

No Screen Shutdown When USB Hub Is Plugged In

Oct 1, 2015

I set my screen to turn off after ten minutes but it doesn't shut off. Today I read somewhere that it could be because I have a USB hub plugged in. Sure enough I unplugged the Hub and my screen shuts down as I have set it up to do. I need what is plugged into my hub and it is a real hassle to reboot my machine when I plug the Hub back in. I have also noticed one more thing and that is that programs that run in the back ground for instance Seti @ Home slows way down since the screen stays on.

Yes, I have the box checked to play sounds on startup under the sound tab in Control Panel. When I test other sounds on the sound tab they play fine.

I have noticed that Dolby Home Theater v4 did not migrate with the upgrade from Win 7.

Unexpected Shutdown For System

Nov 20, 2015

I installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 on my laptop (Dell 7720). While running Fallout 4, I encountered sudden power-off for my system.

The power button did not turn back on for a couple of minutes and the bottom of the laptop was quite hot.

How can I ensure that this unexpected shutdown was due to Laptop overheating and no other reasons (such as Driver conflicts or bad drivers) ?

PS:- In the event viewer in the System tab , I noticed 3 major events , 1 critical, 1 Error and 1 warning. Attaching these 3 FYR.

HP ProBook 6570b Won't Shutdown

Feb 10, 2016

Problem : HP proBook 6570b goes into sleep mode when clicking on start /power / shutdown .

What I have tried : went into advanced power setting in power & sleep tab and made sure the correct settings were applied under power button and lid and some other setting . I think they look correct anyway but i,m not an expert .

Uninstalled the HP power management app in case there was some conflict but this didn't change anything .

Current state : Able to do soft shutdown till system goes to sleep mode then press power button 5 seconds to completely shut down .

Clear Pagefile On Shutdown

Dec 31, 2015

I've been looking into clearing the pagefile, and I found the following steps at a somewhat dated webpage:

In the registry editor, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory ManagementSet ClearPageFileAtShutdown to the REG_DWORD value of 1.Restart Windows.

I'm just wondering whether those steps are still valid, and, if so, does clearing the pagefile work as advertised?

Drivers :: Shutdown Instead Of Sleep?

Dec 14, 2015

I installed Windows 10 one week ago, but I still have issues with the sleep mode. I configured the laptop, that whenever I close the lid or I use my function key the sleep mode is started.

Unfortunately the laptop is either not entering the sleep mode correctly or is not able to restore it. Which means when I open several programs they won't open again.

If have an ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP500LA:
Intel i3 4030
4 GB Ram
240 GB SSD

I tried the following so far: BIOS Update to the newest version 203Downgrade the Intel MEI driver to an older oneReinstall the graphic and touchpad driver Nothing of that was successful. Are there any logfiles to analyse?

Random Shutdown / Restart

Sep 8, 2015

Okay so I've upgraded and use windows 10 for about 2 weeks now. All is fine until I've experienced this random shutdown where the computer turns off completely in a splitsecond then reboots itself. No BSODs, no warnings at all. Recently, it's been shutting itself down and reboots itself but won't even make it to the login screen before it shuts itself down again and this will continue in a loop. I had to turn off the plug and turn it back on. It will prompt a system restore which the computer will work fine for a while after the system restore. I assume this problem is because of windows 10 because I have not experienced this problem when I was using windows 8.1.

My Specs:

Intel Core i5-4590 3.3Ghz
Kingston HyperX 8GB 2x
ZOTAC Geforece GTX970
Samsung 840EVO SSD 256GB (Boot drive)
WD Caviar Blue 1TB
