On October 29 the start button and the Windows 10 taskbar stopped working. I have called Microsoft tech support and chatted online five times but they have not been able to resolve the problem. Windows 10 worked alright for over a month, but then this problem occurred. I believe there was a Windows 10 update around that time.

It came right after I installed a new graphics card though in the days before I had noticed strange stuff like when I searched for an app and clicked on its icon within the start menu nothing would happen. File explorer, settings etc stills works but are very slow.

I downloaded a batch file from a forum site the last time and it worked, so i used it again. My system is now working again. As this appears to be an issue that Microsoft cannot resolve I am now going to turn off automatic updates.

What the heck is going on and how do I fix it? I've got apps that don't appear on my desktop which I am completely unable to use now.
For what it's worth, I can right-click the Start button since my latest reboot but I can't left-click it. (On the previous reboot, I couldn't right- or left-click it.)
I need this machine working ASAP because I use it for my job and my shift just started!
I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop. It kept prompting me to upgrade to Windows 10, so I did so. Now the button that disables my touchpad (also the F5 button) is not working. The touchpad will not turn off.
Secondly, when I try to move the cursor, the "right click" menu pops up wherever the cursor lands, and it will not let me type. I have to use an external mouse to click out of the menu, then put the cursor back where I wanted it to land.
How can I make the disable button on my keyboard work again, and how can I fix the mouse so that the right click menu only comes up if I actually right click?
I have my Windows 10 for around 3 days now, the thing is, in the second day after my computer froze when i was playing counter strike, everything in the task bar but my shortcuts stopped working, they dont open anymore, but when i click it, the cursor blue loading circle shows up but nothing happens.
View 1 RepliesI just did a clean install on W10 and change my bios to UEFI (which it supports.) I'm having this intermittent problem with the Windows "Start" Button in the lower left. It just stops working - left clicking doesn't do anything, although right-clicking does. I just have the basics installed now.
Also, my Windows "Start" key on my keyboard stops working as well. I checked on a keyboard checker and the key itself is fine. I have to log out/back in to get it to work again.
My start menu stopped working several weeks ago and I have been trying all the suggestions found of the various forums with the exception of reloading Windows 10. It looks like Microsoft should be responsible for publishing a solution to this problem realizing how many people are having the same trouble.
View 5 RepliesI got home today and went to open the start menu on my computer, but it didn't respond. Neither does the search menu, nor Windows Edge, or Groove Music or the Windows 10 video program. All of my other programs on the task bar open when I click them, and when I right click the start menu button I am given a list of options, but not ability to access any of the application that I don't have on my task bar or desktop. I tried running POWERSHELL and sfc /scannow, but it found not integrity violations. So now I am not sure what next.
View 4 RepliesSometime in December, 2015 my keyboard Windows button and my task bar Start menu and Search stopped working and without the ability to START I lost all the tiles. Windows has now become very cumbersome to use.
I have given up on Windows 10 and it's too late to recover Windows 7 (Windows 7 was great). Really wish this had not happened as I have been a Windows user since version 3.1. I guess I posted this here because I'm frustrated with the problem and need to air it out. Must buy a new PC.
So yesterday I was just watching some videos on youtube and then the screen flashed for a second and started everything started acting up. I restarted my computer and since then, the start menu, notifications and all apps like the xbox app and store app no longer work. I did Recovery hoping it would fix everything but didn't. What can i do?
View 2 RepliesNow, for some odd reason, on my computer, the sound, start menu and cortana stopped working and I can't even get past the sign in menu without it telling me to sign out so they can "fix" this problem which I've done 3 times now so I have no clue if I screwed up this computer or what.
It started with the sound first, then the start menu so I decided to restart my computer manually (which was a bad idea, apparently) and I guess Cortana just died on me when I got back on.
Also, my computer is on Windows 10 Pro Preview still.
since earlier this week my Start button has come up with a Critical Error when I click on it advising that "Your Start menu is not working. We'll try to fix it next time you sign in".

View 2 RepliesI upgraded to Windows 10 in early August and all has been well until this week when I find that when I left click on the start button nothing happens (right click is fine), and Microsoft Edge seems to have disappeared from my PC (although the icon remains on the Quick Start Bar (but does nothing). This means that I cannot access my list of programs and apps etc.
This all seems to have happened after the last Windows Update. I have tried a system restore from some of the previous restore points, but to no avail.
I have a laptop as well and Windows 10 is running fine on that.
The start button was working until there was a forced reboot (power failure). Then left click (normal click) over the start button does absolutely nothing. Right click brings up a menu but "programs" and also "settings" are missing and not included on this list. Search or Task View buttons do not work either with "normal" click.

View 3 RepliesGot my Win 10 at the lauch day and have been enjoying it until I decided to do some clean up. I ran Ccleaner and Puran utilities reg cleaning tools. After that the start button and task bar became unresponsive.
I tried to google the issue and found out a sort of a solution, but it's not good enough to be permanent. This was that fix:
Right click on the Start Menu button and open Command Prompt (Admin)Enter PowerShell in the command linePaste the following line in the Administrator:
PowerShell Window:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml}
Wait for the PowerShell to execute the command (ignore a few red error codes).
I'm also having problems with updates which seems to be failing everytime. I was hoping the updates would fix the first problem, but since the updates won't istall, I can't know if they would.
So now I'm thinking about fully resetting the install, but since I don't have external hard drive, I wouldn't want to go that far with this.
My laptop is LENOVO G510. It came with windows 8 single language. I upgraded to windows 8.1 single language a year ago. I updated it to windows 10 home by triggering the update. The upgrade went successfully. But the problem now is the start button, applications in the taskbar(only right click) and icons on the taskbar on the right side(time, battery, wifi etc) are not working. They work if I click them after a gap of ten minutes. But if I click them for a second time immediately, they won't work.
Is it my only problem or it occured to many laptops?

View 1 RepliesI know a lot of others are plagued by the Start button issue. I am as well. But, also my Calendar and Calculator stopped working as well.
I have tried SEVERAL solutions. Re-installing all apps via Powershell, re-installing Windows 10 and creating new accounts. Nothing I do seems to work.
Getting tired of this, especially the Start button failing.
