Start Menu / System File Checker
Mar 5, 2016
The last few days I've been changing and customizing some of my start menu icons in Windows 10, largely because some of the program icons clash with the Windows Store app tiles and I wanted the start menu to look appealing.
I ran a system file check via Powershell with administrator privileges and I had zero issues. Then, I changed the icon of Windows Defender via Start > All Apps > Windows System > Windows Defender > right click > more > open file location and changing the icon of the Windows Defender shortcut in the destination folder.
Then, I ran system file check again and now it continually fails and cannot fix the corrupted files. I've since changed the icon back but the issue persists.

Have used Windows 10 for awhile now with no problems. Yesterday, on 18 Sep I updated I Tunes. I don't know if that is linked to the problems that followed since it had been more than 24 hours since I used the PC. I tried to play Day of Defeat and it worked for awhile, but then froze up. Could not control-alt-delete and had to power down, then power back up. PC said Windows did not load correctly and do you want to try again. I said yes and Windows came up OK. Tried to play Day of Defeat again to see if the problem still existed and the game was all herky jerky and not playing correctly, but I was able to close it.
Checked around on the internet. Ran System File Checker. Came up with "could not fix corrupted file taskhostw.exe, source file in store also corrupted." Got same response to bthenum.sys. But, the last line of the SFC details said, "Verify and Repair Transaction completed. All files and registry keys listed in this transaction have been successfully repaired." So, were they fixed or not fixed? I tried to go to restore to go back to an earlier restore point, but then I got system protection error 0X8000FFFF, with most buttons grayed out. In services, microsoft software shadow copy is running on manual, task scheduler is running on auto, and volume shadow copy is running on manual. I have tried the first and last on auto, but still cant access all system restore capabilities or the scheduler to schedule restore points. I did have three restore points listed and have tried the two oldest with no improvement.
I have tried disc check and disc cleanup with no changes noted.
I have a USB recovery thumb drive and partitions on the hard drive. If used, I guess that will cause me to lose all my loaded programs, same if I "reset" the computer.
In August I added Malwarebytes to run a scan as things were acting oddly then. I guess it was Malwarebytes anti-exploit because now I can’t uninstall Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit. I get, "File “C:Program files (x86)Malwarebytes Anti-Exploitunins000.dat” does not exist. Cannot uninstall." I added malwarebytes anti malware as part of my recent efforts, but only found some PUP files. Windows defender found no viruses.
How do I get my PC to begin working properly again? Do I have to go the reset/recovery route and then rebuild everything?? Or is there a better, less terrible option?
How do I get system restore to work properly?
How do I get Day of Defeat to work properly?

Is there any way I can put an .exe file on the Start menu? I know I can put a link to it on the desktop but that has too many icons on it already.

How does one pin a FILE (eg. excel/word/powerpoint) to the start menu?
I saw some tricks for Windows 8 about pasting the file in "%USERPROFILE%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu" but this does not work.
It is very annoying having to pin an entire folder when I can just pin the file.

I created the file google.bat with the following content: start "" "[URL] ...."
What I want to do is add this file to the start menu.
The objective is to be able to execute it with Cortana by saying "hey Cortana, open google".
If I add the file into C:Users**User**AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsSystem Tools
it doesn't show on the start menu.
At one point I added a folder (and it did show on the start menu) into c:program dataMicrosoftwindowsstart menuprograms
but when I restarted the computer it disappeared.

I know its a common problem with 10 but here is a list of my problems that occurred a few days after upgrading to windows 10.start menu isn't accessible (unless i download classic shell)task bar isn't accessible system tray isn't accessible - i can't even open the clock or volume control! edge has vanished cortana is non-existent app store is not accessible.there are various solutions out there i know - i have tried every one i could find but to no avail. these include: creating a new user - doesn't allow it.
powershell (as admin) - this command: Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"} - does nothing performing sfc /scannow - no integrity violations
removing various anti-virus and anti-spyware software packages - does nothing applying the batch file of win 10 default services - says access is denied for each item. msconfig - booted in safe mode etc Error 67758 - fixing this finds no problem detected

I am not able to open the file explorer through the option on the start menu, or by clicking on the file explorer pinned to the task bar. When I click the pinned file explorer the window that pops up says "Windows cannot find ''. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I am able to navigate through to my files by going to the start menu file explorer's jump list (clicking the arrow to the right of the file explorer option on the start menu).
All of these issues began after I had been messing around with custom themes. I ran UltraUXThemePatcher_3.0.4 and then I changed the following files (themeui.dll,uxinit.dll, and uxtheme.dll). Next, I ran a registry editor file that made it so I can take ownership via right click. I also followed these steps in this article: [Windows 10 Tip] Remove Icons from Navigation Pane of This PC - AskVG up to the end of "Part 2: Remove Quick Access Icon From Navigation Pane of This PC". The last thing I did was install a custom icon pack.

after updating win7 to win10 i immediately customized my start menu tiles and it looked really awesome while still being organised. After encountering numerous problems with poorly migrated programs i did a fresh install ( like a month ago) and havent been able to find that same perfect arrangement.
where is the layout for the tiles in the start menu stored?
i still have the .vhd from the backup so i can find a file if necessary, but i dont know where the info is stored.

I do not know what happened, but I lost some file associations, such as opening .torrent files and magnetic links with utorrent and text files (.ini, .txt etc.) with Notepad++. Additionally, Start Menu and tray options, such as volume slider and wi-fi menu are not opening anymore. Settings starts, though. I already tried to apply that CSSEmerg67758.diagcab fix, but it didn't work. I can't perform a system restore as well, I get this error: ....

I have upgraded Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and I am experiencing those kind of problems. I did some searches and found out that I am not the only one and that we have to wait for a patch. I ran a powershell code without success and there seems to be no other way.

I have a PC that failed the initial check for Windows 10 compatibility because of an old video card. I since have removed it and put in a new Nvidia that is 10 compatible. I have installed it and rebooted and left it on for a week.
If I look at the scheduled tasks I see that the tasks for the analysis looks like it has run but when I pull up the Windows 10 check PC window it says it last ran over a month ago and still shows the reason it can't do the install is because of the old video card.
I have search and tried the command line to force the compatibility checker to run again but still no go.

I upgraded to Windows 10 everything seems to run fine but system will not restart from the restart selection on the start menu. Windows update will not reboot automatically either. System looks like it is going to reboot, everything shuts down but as system trys to restart everything freezes. Only way around it is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button. Updated graphics card, hard drive and bios but still no luck.

I'm trying to copy a ripped movie file (iso) from my G drive to desktop. The file is 45GB. It gets to 99% then a message comes up saying the process can't complete because the System has the file open. I have nothing running and can't find anything where the System is accessing/linking to this file.
I thought it might be a permissions issue, so I wanted to download the Reg edit to add a "take ownership" command but the TenFourms link is not working. Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 10 <<<< won't open web page.
I ran sfc /scannow and there are some errors reported that could not be fixed. There is a CBS.log file but I have not looked at it yet.
I also ran the DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I forget the full command line now) and it came back saying it could not find the files "online".

Here's a screenshot of "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog from a fresh clean install of Windows 10 Pro x64
As you can see, despite its name, it does not have a tab for "Start Menu". I remember that Preview versions of Windows 10 had a "Start Menu" tab. Did they just remove at the last moment? And how I change Start Menu options without that tab?

I have just upgraded to Win10 and most items on the "Power User Command Menu" do not work if the menu is accessed by right-clicking the Start Menu button on the Task Bar. The only items that do work are Search, Run, Shut down and Desktop. If the menu is accessed by the other means, the menu items work fine.
I've tried SFC and a day searching the web with no luck.
The computer is a Toshiba laptop running an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5500 with 4 Gb of memory. I don't know what the proper name for the "Power User Command Menu" may be, but that's the only way I've seen it referenced elsewhere.

I wanted to add some programs to the top of the left side of the start menu (free space on the screenshoot). I have read about the "Pin to Start List" if you rightclick while holding shift. But this seems not to be working anymore!?!?! Is there another possibility to customize this list or to re-add the function? I don't want to use "recently added apps" or something like that ...

I'm running the RTM on a netbook and have noticed that, unlike in Windows 7/8/8.1, I'm no longer able to hit Start and type in an executable. I have a bunch of portable apps that I typically type in and pull up. Now, the Start menu search pulls up ever OTHER file except the executable. It's very annoying and don't see why this shouldn't work.
What's worse, is if I pin the app to the start menu, it doesn't search it then. Say, I pin "puttyportable.exe" as a shortcut (and rename it to just PuTTY) to the start menu. Typing in "putty" gives me nothing - just the same associated files that were in the puttyportable folder (ini files, etc).

I installed Windows 10 very recently and I like it, but I have a VERY BIG show-stopper: when I try to do search in the start menu, it's terrible; it cannot even find an application that I have manually pinned to start. I didn't have any such problem with Windows 8.1. I have also installed some other desktop applications, for example GitHub for Windows, but when I start to to type "Git...", it only finds "GitHub" and it cannot find "Git Shell" and I have to go to all programs, find "G", then expand the folder for this application and run that application.

A couple of issues with W10 start menu ( - not sure if they're symptoms of the same thing. This is GA x64 W10 with all current updates installed
1) Pin to start menu doesn't pin anything to the start menu. I wanted to pin File History - R click in control panel, select Pin to Start - doesn't pin. Tested on another machine and it works there.
2) R click the Start button for the Power User menu - all I see is Network Connections - same result with Win X. Again, works as expected on another install.
how to save me doing a re-install?
Edit - SFC reports no violations.
Edit - switched to a local account on the machine and PU menu is there and working - so is this a permissions thing? My original account is admin.

When I right-click the Start Menu (Win10Pro) and the menu pops up, selecting any of the menu items does not do anything. The menu just closes.I ran sfc /scannow and the log is attached. There are a bunch of errors based on 'duplicate owners' and something about 'opencl.dll' possibly is corrupt at the very end of the log.
I ran a driver uninstaller app found on this forum and then downloaded and installed the recent NVIDIA GeForce drivers for my dual GT640 cards (3 monitors). After rebooting, Geforce indicated a new updated driver and I downloaded and installed that as well. The only menu items that will work when right-clicking Start Menu are the "Run" and "Search" options. Control Panel, Event Viewer, Command Prompt, etc. do nothing. The only way to start these items is to do so via the search box or run box.

I served in the Air Force communications division. I have managed million dollar installations. I am in college working toward a programming degree. I can not for the life of me get my "All Apps" menu to show up on my start menu. I have even searched google and was given every single way of adding and removing programs from the all apps folder but not a single article on how to get the actual folder option to show up.
