I want to access my old desktop display with the files/folders and icons i had there. after upgrading to win 10 i now have tiles and the desktop tile doesn't contain all my previous content.
Oddly when I click on a tab I get a quick glimpse of my old desktop which disappears just as fast.
I have seen several threads where people want to remove this feature but in my case it is actually easier to use than scrolling down through 10 to 20 pages of programs listed by letter to get to "X" for "Xcopy+" for example. Is there a way to make a desktop shortcut one-click to access the All-Apps alphabetic 'list-by-letter' menu? If I could, i would make that my default Display option when clicking All Apps in the Start Menu.
View 9 RepliesOn startup, I have it set to display the Start Screen without the Start Menu. When I exit an app the Start Menu is displayed and I have to click the Windows icon to once again display only the Start Screen (tiles only).
View 5 RepliesMy wife's laptop auto updated to Windows 10 last week and everything had been working perfectly until yesterday. Suddenly her desktop/start menu reverted from the new Windows 10 start menu to the old Windows 8.1 desktop. I did some searching and supposedly if you go through control panel, appearance, taskbar and start menu properties there should be a start menu tab where you select which one you want. That tab doesn't exist on her machine or mine for that matter.

-My start menu items are floating sort of to the right, in the position they normall are.
-However, this is where it gets wierd.

1. Start button
2. a button which brings up All Programs
3. Power button

4. All the way at the top, a button which when clicked shows most used apps.
after been using Windows 10 since launch I've got annoyed by those silly things whenever I click start menu for longer than like 2 or 3 minutes. When it happens, the windows desktop flickers to black. I uninstalled the drivers and used the microsoft generic drivers and it does the same thing. Of course, when I go to safe mode and I can't use the start menu as it just opens and closes in less than the second on its own. Because of this I've been researching this through Google and it somehow all of that kinda doesn't seem to relate to that. Also, I get the error message when I shut down and I couldn't get to see the error message because windows shuts all that stuff down.

When Windows 10 is in Desktop mode, how I do not view all the tiles on the Start menu?
View 3 RepliesThe thing is that after updating on windows 10 it is unable to open my desktop by minimizing the Start menu, only via windows explorer. Start menu opens always in full-screen mode so I can't resize it (yes, full-screen mode is unchecked in the relevant menu).

Second (and more importantly), minimizing all windows does not take me to the desktop as it should, and sends me to the start menu. It seems that the desktop is completely inaccessible, at that. It also automatically sends me to the start menu when I close the application/file I'm looking at. View 3 RepliesA customer brought me a machine with an issue I have never seen before. All desktop icons were gone and the only thing on the desktop is 3 lines in the upper left (opens an empty start menu), 3 lines in the lower left (opens all programs list) and the power button above that. I have managed to bring the desktop icons back but when I click the start menu it switches from the desktop with icons to the above mentioned screen with no icons. When it is on this new screen you can't right click on anything. A new user works as it should.
View 2 RepliesI recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".
I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.
Some desktop apps are missing from the "All apps" section of the Start menu. Most programs are there, but I'd say 10-15% are missing. Apps that are missing also do not show up when searching the Start menu, and they cannot be pinned to the Start screen as tiles from File Explorer. (The option to "Pin to Start" is there, but selecting it doesn't do anything.)
I have a screenshot here of Outlook 2013 missing from the Start menu even though it is present in the "Start Menu" programs shortcut folder. This is one of many examples.
I've tried resetting the Windows Search index a few times and that hasn't done any good.
Additionally, I've tried adding my own shortcuts and folders to the "Start Menu" programs folder and the changes do not reflect on the Start menu "All apps" section. It's as if it has cached the structure somewhere and it is not updating for changes (or it is ignoring some changes). I tried to figure out some way to kick it into resetting but I have not been successful.
I've had windows 10 for some time now, since the upgrade from windows 7 became available.Recently I've started having some issues, the icons on the desktop don't display and many other icons won't display. I've rebuilt the icon cache.db manually around 4 times so far but it keeps damaging itself somehow. Also many of the windows features like the control panel for example won't display. Generally the disk speed seems to slowing as well, for example it can take up to 2 minutes for all of the items of a specific folder to be displayed if I route straight to it via command prompt or the file path bar. my HDD may potentially be dying.

I upgrade to Windows 10 from 7.1 today and everything seems to be working fine, but it won't display any desktop images. Trying to select one of the images in the customization screen or another image using the search option won't result in any changes. Right clicking an image and setting it as background image doesn't work also. I checked the Ease of Access options and it is set to display Windows background.
Solid color backgrounds work correctly. Slide show seems to be not available.

As you can see, despite its name, it does not have a tab for "Start Menu". I remember that Preview versions of Windows 10 had a "Start Menu" tab. Did they just remove at the last moment? And how I change Start Menu options without that tab?
I've not got the 'Start Menu' tab in my 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' control panel (right-click on taskbar). I've seen screenshots on the web, but my Win 10 Pro doesn't have. How can I enable?

I have since tried to switch the menu languages and everything to English but can't figure out how to get it to work completely in English.
Often used windows apps in the start menu all appear in english (maps, people, calculator etc..) but actual words Often used are in Russian. As are all menu items in windows explorer etc..and other windows programs.
When I go to time and Language settings and then Region and Language its setup as USA and English USA, don't even see Russian listed there. how to resolve?
Since updating to Windows 10 I have a display settings issue. I set my display setting to 1920x1080 (recommended) apply and check 'keep settings'. When I shut down and restart the display has changed to 1366x768. Happens every time I restart.

View 7 RepliesI have just upgraded to Win10 and most items on the "Power User Command Menu" do not work if the menu is accessed by right-clicking the Start Menu button on the Task Bar. The only items that do work are Search, Run, Shut down and Desktop. If the menu is accessed by the other means, the menu items work fine.
I've tried SFC and a day searching the web with no luck.
The computer is a Toshiba laptop running an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5500 with 4 Gb of memory. I don't know what the proper name for the "Power User Command Menu" may be, but that's the only way I've seen it referenced elsewhere.
