So my mail app was not opening links. So I looked up how to reinstall the mail app. Got to this: [URL]....
I uninstalled the apps, then ran the powershell command: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"} to reinstall the mail app.
A bunch of red errors appeared in the prompt and now my start menu, notifications, onedrive,... won't work.

How do I restore these functions? sfc also does not work in Powershell but does work in CMD. Also, it does nothing.

I use Adobe After Effects, which I often need to run multiple copies of using the -m switch. Windows 7 let me modify the shortcut in the start menu so it'd start with this switch, which if AE is already running means it'll launch a new instance of it, rather than switching to the instance I've already got open. However, in Win10 I can't find any way to do this - it has the same behaviour that launching AE from the task bar in Win7 did, ie it just switches to the already open instance. Is there a way to add the switch I need?
Just dragged it onto the desktop as a shortcut, and interestingly there's no option to add the switch there either (in Properties)..
EDIT: I can create a shortcut with the switch in Program Files (or presumably elsewhere on the C drive), but right-clicking and choosing "Pin to Start" seems to remove that switch. It opens a second copy when I launch the shortcut from Program Files, but not from Start.
I would like to automatize cleaning the Windows 10's start menu from all these default pinned apps that I'm not using. I don't want to remove apps, only unpin from from start.
I tried to google, but didn't find any. There seems to be no command to pin and unpin apps in start menu. Any alternative methods? The information about the configuration of start menu must be stored somewhere....
After starting my PC, sometimes my start menu does not open. And even if it did then the search function doesn't work.
Like if I open the start menu and type "a" then the start menu it goes full black with 4 blue dots at it's top moving left to right indicating that it is loading but it's stuck forever.
I am using Windows 10 Pro clean install with dual monitor setup.
i upgraded to Windows 10 Home, from windwos 7 home premium. And now i can't open start menu... Also there is no windows update? Is there windows update in windows 10? I tried sfc /scannow and something with powershell.
I did a clean install of w10 from w7 a couple of months ago and everything has been running fine until about a week ago since when I've not been able open the start menue. Reading through other posts on line with the same problem has not provided a solution so far. I've ran the DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image/Restor Health and that "completed suucessfully" Then ran a fsc/scannow and that "did not find an integrity violations". I've tried to do a system restore but it fails saying a fil;e is preventing it, maybe the anti-virus.
Had an unused SSD laying on my desk so decided to put Windows 10 on my primary computer. Had a few problems getting it installed from my Build 10041 iso but finally got it updated to build 10061. Was having problems booting up and kept getting an initialization failed error. On a whim tried a restore point and low and behold it booted into Windows 10. Problem now is I can't open the start menu. Clicking on the taskbar icon does nothing and the ctrl/esc keyboard combo doesn't work either. It will be a bit of a pita but if all else fails I can plug my Windows 8 drive back in and format the Windows 10 drive for a reinstall. Wish Microsoft would hurry and post up a build 10061 iso download.
I have installed mcafee. The windows button wont open making microsoft edge unusable and a few other things, like the search bar unusable. Any fix for this other than refreshing or resetting or changing or removing any files?? When I right click it a gray menu pops up but if I give it a normal click i get a loading wheel then nothing.
I upgraded to Windows 10 last night and have had nothing but problems. The biggest one is the fact that I cannot open the start menu, I had worked around it by right clicking it and then selecting what I needed from there. However now that doesn't even work.
I've been unable to open the start menu or the cortana/search menu for about 3 days now. Even enabling the regular search bar doesn't work, as I Can't click into it.
I have Windows 10. I recently had a problem with my Nvidia drivers, but could install them after all. But now I can see at startup that my graphics card is working, but after startup it stops working and windows switches to the graphics card integrated into the motherboard. After startup when I login, I can't see my profile picture, after logging in, my background where used to be a nice wallpaper is black. When I click on the start button nothing happens. When I try to search for something, it says 'These results may be incomplete'. If I try to open the windows settings app nothing happens. I also can't open Google Chrome.
I've found out that when I start up the pc, first the fan on my graphics card doesn't work, then does for 15 seconds and then stops working again.
whenever I try to open the Command Prompt in Win10 (cmd.exe) I get the following pop up: cmd.exe - Application Error The Application was unable to staart correctly (0XCoooo142). Click OK to close the application.
After going throw the activation process with Cortana, I found it impossible to open the start menu or use Cortana's search function.
Ironically, I was hear earlier about to submit this thread when it all decided to work... I closed the web browser and it worked for around 10s... then it decided to break again. My thread was lost ...
So, I have tried everything to get this to work. I've tried various pieces of code in Powershell, I've tried restarting Explorer.exe, I've tried finding the SearchUI service but I can't find it. It seems to have been merged, or it instantly closes itself on-click or on boot.
I also recieved a message telling me that to save any data lost, I need to sign out. It told me something along these lines "The Start Menu and Cortanas infastructure have ran into a problem. You must restart now to ensure you don't lose any data." It then showed the "Sign out" button, which I clicked, logged in and everything seems fine now, apart from this consistent problem.
Starting a couple of days ago my Windows 10 computer start menu stopped opening (although I can still right click on it to shut down). This coincided with a chime constantly sounding. I'm not sure if this is related, but there is a pending notification on the lower right, but I can't open that to see what it says.
I tried reinstalling Windows apps with powershell, but this didn't do the trick.
When I click on the start button, nothing happens. It highlights when I hover over it, but doesn't react to being clicked. The same is true for the notification area.I can right click on the start button and it provides the normal options.Again the same is true of the notification button.
I have the settings app pinned to the taskbar, but the icon is not visible.I know that it is still recognised as being there, as it highlights when I hover over it, and it holds its place like any visible icon would.Right clicking it does nothing. At first, the start menu was the only thing not responding. The notification panel was working, as I remember changing to 'tablet mode' to try to resolve it.I restarted the computer, but that was when I discovered that notification panel was no longer working. I don't know the state of the settings icon before I restarted.I have also restarted into safe mode, but the problem still occurs.I have not downloaded any new software since it started occurring.I have checked the task manager and there appears to be no change in performance.
