Start Menu Icons / Apps Missing
Feb 10, 2016Just got this error and couldn't find anything like this solved. The icons (or maybe the apps) are missing from the start menu.

View 3 RepliesSo my laptop, which has been on Windows 10 for a while now, updated last night after I went to bed. So now the start menu won't open and I don't have the icons on the bottom right corner (time, wifi, etc.). I read several old posts about doing the "powershell" thing but it won't let me because it said I have to run it as an administrator on the console. So I'm stuck there because it's my laptop, wouldn't I automatically have admin rights on my own device?
View 1 RepliesSome desktop apps are missing from the "All apps" section of the Start menu. Most programs are there, but I'd say 10-15% are missing. Apps that are missing also do not show up when searching the Start menu, and they cannot be pinned to the Start screen as tiles from File Explorer. (The option to "Pin to Start" is there, but selecting it doesn't do anything.)
I have a screenshot here of Outlook 2013 missing from the Start menu even though it is present in the "Start Menu" programs shortcut folder. This is one of many examples.
I've tried resetting the Windows Search index a few times and that hasn't done any good.
Additionally, I've tried adding my own shortcuts and folders to the "Start Menu" programs folder and the changes do not reflect on the Start menu "All apps" section. It's as if it has cached the structure somewhere and it is not updating for changes (or it is ignoring some changes). I tried to figure out some way to kick it into resetting but I have not been successful.
I removed the Windows Apps (3D Builder, Groovy etc.) using PowerShell and Remove-AppxPackage / Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage on our Windows 10 machines (64bit, some Home, some Pro) at home.
This worked satisfying enough, but for some (very few) local users the start menu entries for those apps are not removed. I refer to "All Apps" (the A-Z list of all apps).
Situation is like this: application is removed (checked with Get-Appxpackage in Powershell)start menu still refers to the Windows Apps with the text entry; it does not show the icon, but a coloured rectangle (sized like an icon)application cannot be started through this icon (as it is uninstalled)
(Screenshot shows the Maps (german: Karten) and Contacts (german: Kontakte) "icons")
I checked the usual places:
C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuC:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
But of course there are no links to those Windows Apps.
How to remove these orphan "icons" from the start menu (A-Z list)? What makes Windows show those entries in the start menu's A-Z list?
I remember that after I had upgraded to Windows 10, my local account wasn't available and the system logged me in with a temporary profile. Then when I logged in with my account, some of the tiles from the start menu had disappeared. I've tried opening powershell and executing the "GetAppx" command line, but that didn't work. I don't even know what the cause of it is.
What I did was simply refresh my PC, preserving my personal files and documents, although I'll have to re-install a few of my apps. But the start menu appears to be back to it's usual state. Still not sure who is at fault though, me or Microsoft...? :/
Maybe it's just me, but it is my opinion that the OS build is buggy (I have 10586.0).
Is anyway to edit "all Apps", especially to remove some icons from? I have uninstalled Edge, but the icon is still in Start menu of "all apps".
View 5 RepliesApparently, I have yet another problem with Windows 10. I noticed today on my laptop that that when I right click on an application from the start menu there are options such as Pin to Start, Pin to Taskbar, Uninstall, Run as Administrator and Open File Location. However, when I right click on an application on my desktop PC, the only option I have available is Pin to Start.
View 1 RepliesI recently upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. I noticed some programs were missing from the start menu. Upon further investigation it seems only the programs from my SSD are in the start menu, anything I installed to my second drive is absent from the start menu.
View 1 RepliesAs per the image below - why are many of my apps not showing their icons? There's not options to change them and I've tried pinning the original .exe and shortcuts to the app but there is no difference.
View 4 RepliesI have reported it (and others) on the Nvidia forums. Doesn't seem to happen for light gaming for 5 minutes or so (and of course won't happen after playing solitaire) but after heavy gaming (Battlefield Hardline, the free Star Wars beta) for 30 minutes or so, after exiting most of the start menu is often blank. Takes a reboot to get it back.
I do not believe it's corruption issues on my OS or hardware issues. Things I've done:
1) SFC/scannow no issues
2) Ran this "Get-appxpackage -all *shellexperience* -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + "appxmetadataappxbundlemanifest.xml")} to reregister icons.
3) Did a rebuild of the icon cache
4) Did extensive memory tests - all passed.
5) Turned off "game mode" in Antivirus
After disabling and uninstalling Cortana, Edge and others as well as Search I ended up with 2 dead icons in the All apps menu one for Search and one for Edge. When I drag the Search icon to the desktop it's named as:
@{Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_1.4.8.176_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewyms-resource--Microsoft.Windows.Cortana-resources-TileDisplayName} but not sure I want to start deleting various reg entries where this shows. I also tried in all the usual places where the shortcuts are supposed to be but nothing worked and the icons are still there so how they can be removed if at all. It's more of a cosmetic problem as I have no issues with Windows otherwise...
In my windows 10 start menu all my installed programs give a white paper (with curled right corner) icon. There are a few that give the original icon but most of them do not. I tried a new clean install but that didn't work.
I also tried:
-SFC scannow gedaan met deze opdracht: sfc /scannow
(heeft niets opgelost)
-DISM gedaan met deze opdracht: dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
-Delete imoage cach
-Rebuild image cach
-Used another account
-In the start menu folders the icons are as they should be
I even installed classic shell for a while and the the icons are normal! So I think there is something wrong with my start menu. I tried everything I could think of but nothings works. It's annoying to see the wrong icons although when I click them de app opens normally.
What can I do to get the normal icons back?
After pinning some user-installed applications to the Start Menu they looked fine. Today, all the icons that should be displayed in the buttons are gone. To determine what a given button does I have to hover over it, and the title appears in text. They still work to institute execution but are surely not the intuitive, user-friendly stuff we are suppose to applaud in W10.
Like my other problems of this nature, restart does nothing to correct the problem. And I cannot remove and reinstall the buttons since a right-click on them does absolutely nothing. All Windows provided buttons still have their icons, but right clicking on them does nothing either. I can drag-and-drop the icons around on the right side but cannot even resize them since a right-click is useless.
my mouse works in every way except inside the start menu. I've also noticed that I can't click on anything after I hit Ctrl + Alt + Del, I had to use the keyboard to open the task manager earlier, but when I got the task manager open, it worked fine. Also, the start menu icons recognize that I am mousing over them - the borders highlight, the mouseover dialog pops up if relevant, but clicking on anything doesn't work.
I am using the Etekcity Scroll Alpha gaming mouse. It's a wired USB mouse.
I ran some commands in the command prompt earlier - "sfc /scannow", something ending in "/restorehealth", and an extremely long PowerShell command. I wish I could be more specific but I can't find the commands again.
I tried looking for updated drivers, everything appears to be up to date. I also ran across a suggestion to update the chipset software, but I can't find anything at all released for Windows 10 and when I ran their utility to find the driver for you, it seemed to confirm that.
I upgraded from Windows 10 a few days ago and until I woke up this morning and woke up my PC from Sleep mode, the start menu worked perfectly. I tried restarting the PC after running the commands I mentioned earlier, problem persisted.
Whats up with the missing text labels? Sometimes its my start menu sometimes its the right click menu.
View 7 RepliesI'm currently running Build 10130. For some reason, when I view "All Apps" I have folders for my desktop apps, but nearly all of the icons for the apps themselves are missing.
I have tried the following solutions & none have fixed the problem:
SFC /scannow
DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I've run both of those alternatively 3X in a row - based on another thread)
Deleted the icon cache in my user folder
Run the Windows Troubleshooter for Windows Update
Created a new local account & logged in.
Enabled the Administrator account & logged in.
Did a repair install of Build 10130
When I navigate to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms I can see everything and it's all just fine. For some reason the icons simple refuse to appear on the start screen.
I've checked the permissions on those folders and they appear to be fine.
I've tried right clicking on a program and selecting "pin to start" and nothing happens.
I've checked C:UsersmynameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms as well and it seems to be fine, but still nothing changes.
How is Windows 10 creating the Start screen icons? Is there a way to force it to rebuild everything?
My computer has hidden or lost the start up button.. The icon is missing from my start up screen.. I haven't the ability to use the f keys either they produce nothing.. All of the things I previously installed as also absent.. My windows computer four window icon produces nothing as well , having to manually shut it off..
View 1 RepliesI have an issue with some icons in windows 10, some of them are not being displayed by windows.
View 9 RepliesI am missing the icons for a few pieces of software, such as office, i have tried resetting the icon cache, to no avail
View 5 RepliesI have issues with missing quick launch icons, tray icons and broken start button ALL AT ONCE (and I've installed win 10 just a few days before that), i did the DISM restore (using this [URL] ... ) but this happened.
View 7 RepliesWhile trying to discover why my most used list was not showing up on the start menu, I learned that when I right click on the task bar and go to properties, the Start Tab is not present where it should be.
View 4 Repliesmy start menu. Originally, at the bottom there was a search bar. Then I installed Start10, made some changes, and then decided to uninstall the program and go back to the default start menu. The uninstallation required a restart, which I did, however now the start menu bottom search bar is gone. I tried going through the start menu settings but no luck. So I tried reinstalling Start 10, but it says that the computer must restart to finish the earlier uninstallation before a new install can begin. I have tried turning the laptop completely off multiple times but get the same result.
View 1 RepliesThe mostly used list is not showing anything at all. I checked in settings and it is marked to show most recently used.
View 5 RepliesSuddenly the "Settings" and "File Explorer" options are missing from the start menu of my Windows 10x64 Pro installation. I tried going back to a restore point when I knew they were there they still didn't come back.
View 3 RepliesI finally upgraded from Win7 to Win10. The start links (Documents to Videos) all come up as "Missing Shortcut".
After about a minute or so, it changes to the "Problem with Shortcut"
For Videos, I clicked the "Delete it" option and it completely removed it.
I have tied many combinations of turning on/off the links in settings and restarting to no avail. Also, the folder in app data it refers to does not exist under any profile.
I'd rather not fill up the Tiles area with these links when they could be there vice blank space.
I have several computers running Win. 10!
This problem only occurs on my 32bit machine, where the Left Click Mouse on Start Panel doesn't work any longer?
