I have just upgraded from Win 7 Ultimate to Win 10 build 10240
The sart menu button does not activate anything, search doesn't either, Notification bubble does not open anything either.
Safe mode produces same behaviour, I have uninstalled AVG Anti virus as some people were correlating AV software with this behaviour.
I can right click on the start button but not left click
Sometime in December, 2015 my keyboard Windows button and my task bar Start menu and Search stopped working and without the ability to START I lost all the tiles. Windows has now become very cumbersome to use.
I have given up on Windows 10 and it's too late to recover Windows 7 (Windows 7 was great). Really wish this had not happened as I have been a Windows user since version 3.1. I guess I posted this here because I'm frustrated with the problem and need to air it out. Must buy a new PC.
I'm running the RTM on a netbook and have noticed that, unlike in Windows 7/8/8.1, I'm no longer able to hit Start and type in an executable. I have a bunch of portable apps that I typically type in and pull up. Now, the Start menu search pulls up ever OTHER file except the executable. It's very annoying and don't see why this shouldn't work.
What's worse, is if I pin the app to the start menu, it doesn't search it then. Say, I pin "puttyportable.exe" as a shortcut (and rename it to just PuTTY) to the start menu. Typing in "putty" gives me nothing - just the same associated files that were in the puttyportable folder (ini files, etc).
Some desktop apps are missing from the "All apps" section of the Start menu. Most programs are there, but I'd say 10-15% are missing. Apps that are missing also do not show up when searching the Start menu, and they cannot be pinned to the Start screen as tiles from File Explorer. (The option to "Pin to Start" is there, but selecting it doesn't do anything.)
I have a screenshot here of Outlook 2013 missing from the Start menu even though it is present in the "Start Menu" programs shortcut folder. This is one of many examples.
I've tried resetting the Windows Search index a few times and that hasn't done any good.
Additionally, I've tried adding my own shortcuts and folders to the "Start Menu" programs folder and the changes do not reflect on the Start menu "All apps" section. It's as if it has cached the structure somewhere and it is not updating for changes (or it is ignoring some changes). I tried to figure out some way to kick it into resetting but I have not been successful.
I've noticed now on multiple computers I've installed Windows 10 on, that a quick win-key search isn't able to bring up installed apps. I'm sure this isn't how it's meant to be, and that there must be a fix... right?
View 3 RepliesIve updated my 8.1 today and now my start menu and indeed any metro apps wont start (ironic).If I create a new user their start menu is ok. I'm trying to revert back to my 8.1 installation but I cant because I cannot get to the revert option as it lives in the metro settings page NOT the standard control panel (why oh why are there two places with differing options, though in this case if it was all metro I couldnt access anything).
I cant revert using the new user as then it tells me I cant revert because I have added a user since upgrading? I cant start anything metro..I cant start anything from the right click start menu..I cant right click in file explorer (which I have to start via win-r) so its hard to get anything running as administrator..its a total fail of an upgrade for me.
I've not got the 'Start Menu' tab in my 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' control panel (right-click on taskbar). I've seen screenshots on the web, but my Win 10 Pro doesn't have. How can I enable?

View 4 RepliesI installed Windows 10 very recently and I like it, but I have a VERY BIG show-stopper: when I try to do search in the start menu, it's terrible; it cannot even find an application that I have manually pinned to start. I didn't have any such problem with Windows 8.1. I have also installed some other desktop applications, for example GitHub for Windows, but when I start to to type "Git...", it only finds "GitHub" and it cannot find "Git Shell" and I have to go to all programs, find "G", then expand the folder for this application and run that application.
View 9 RepliesWin 10 Enterprise. Worked fine for a couple of days, but now I cannot seem to bring up the start menu and start typing anything. It will not search. I also tried in the search box or spyglass... I just click on it and nothing happens. It is a major inconvenience. I don't want to do a restore and keep my files, because there is a HUGE list of applications I will then need to restore. I also tried to click on Cortana, but clicking the app does nothing, doesn't even bring it up.
I tried re-indexing search items, I tried the search troubleshooter. I have rebooted, I have installed all updates. Someone on another forum said kill the Cortana task... well there isn't one running.
This issue just popped up after restarting my computer today. Earlier, all the task bar icons were showing and I could see the time/date, but clicking on them would do nothing. Also whenever I tried to open pictures with "Photos" I would get an error message about something timing out and I would have to use windows explorer.
So I restarted, and when I booted my computer up again, the task bar icons never showed up and the time and date is gone. I can't click on cortana and clicking the windows icon will bring up nothing. I've restarted twice since then but nothing has worked so far.
Windows 10 only offers 49 different colors for the color of the Start Menu and the Task Bar. None of which are light grey colors, like I had in Windows 8.0. Please have us be able to change the color of the Task Bar. Why didn't Microsoft give us a full RGB color spectrum choice of what color we want our start menu to be and our task bar to be, like in Windows 7? Only 49 colors, come on. These 49 colors are in Settings -> Personalization -> Colors

I'm not getting any error messages on boot up, but the start menu doesn't work and my task bar contains only the start menu, cortana, task view and an icon for no new messages. No clock, none of my programs or even edge. If I hadn't put some of my programs from the taskbar in a folder on the desktop, I'd have a hard time getting to them.
I've rebooted 4 or 5 times since this started on Wednesday and tried the critical error fix of holding down the F8 while rebooting and nothing has worked. I've been running win10 since August and have had the critical error message a few times, but have always been able to clear it before.
I tried the powershell command, but it did not work. Is there any quick fixes to this? I'm not ever good with OS related problems!Also, I can't use cortana, so I am guessing this is definitely an OS related problem.

Do not allow web search.
Don't search the web or display web results in Search.
Don't search the web or display web results in Search over.
However, as usual I'm looking for a way to do this via registry.
I just recently(July 30th) installed Win 10 on my Toshiba C55D-A5382 laptop, that originally came with Win 8.1(purchased summer of 2014). After the full install of Win 10 - that took 35 minutes to do(using Brighthouse Lighting 150Mbps connection), Win 10 flashed up saying - install was a success. After it restarted and I signed in(newer start pages look great to me), I placed the cursor on the "Start Button" to have a look see at all the new stuff to be seen(but to no avail). "Start Button" does not work at all nor does the bottom task bar line either, and my laptop has been on for 3 straight days now(getting worried about over heating issues). When I had Win 8.1 OS on this laptop, it use to go to sleep on it's own - but not now. I have waited patiently for "Windows Support" .... Using both "Live Chat" as I waited for over 74 minutes, and over the "Phone Support" as I waited for over an hour - both to no avail. Is there anyway to kick start the "Start Menu" again? Can I go back and re-install Win 8.1 on to it and then re-install Win 10 on it again?
View 1 RepliesWhen I start my computer, my Start Menu Search sometimes gets stuck in a start up or searching loop. The start menu itself works if I am just using my mouse to click icons. The issue is hitting the Windows button on my keyboard and typing.What is strange is that when this happens, if I log out then log in again, it starts up fine. While this is a workaround, I would like to solve the problem that is causing the problem.
I've tried re-indexing my entire computer based on a similar post I found here, but that did not work. Also - searching in a general Explorer window works fine showing the Windows Indexing does not appear to be the problem.
So, today my win10 64bit pro decided that searching from the start menu will no longer work.
No matter what I search for after I push start, it just keeps searching and nothing shows up.
For example previously on Windows 10 I just used to type "CC" and CCleaner used to show up and I pressed enter.
View 9 RepliesI did a clean install of w10 from w7 a couple of months ago and everything has been running fine until about a week ago since when I've not been able open the start menue. Reading through other posts on line with the same problem has not provided a solution so far. I've ran the DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image/Restor Health and that "completed suucessfully" Then ran a fsc/scannow and that "did not find an integrity violations". I've tried to do a system restore but it fails saying a fil;e is preventing it, maybe the anti-virus.
View 7 Repliesmy start menu. Originally, at the bottom there was a search bar. Then I installed Start10, made some changes, and then decided to uninstall the program and go back to the default start menu. The uninstallation required a restart, which I did, however now the start menu bottom search bar is gone. I tried going through the start menu settings but no luck. So I tried reinstalling Start 10, but it says that the computer must restart to finish the earlier uninstallation before a new install can begin. I have tried turning the laptop completely off multiple times but get the same result.
View 1 RepliesWhen you open the start menu, is there a way that when you start typing, it displays only programs installed starting with those letters? Or at least show more than just the top 3 options?
In windows 8.1 you could have just your programs displayed, and typing would only search through those. (maybe there is also an extension to bring that back?)
