System Idle Process 100% CPU Usage?
Oct 24, 2015
I only noticed the problem a bout a week ago. my CPU was at 100% usage but nothing is taking up the usage. Some of my programs will spike to 50% for some reason but in details theres this system idle process thats taking up 99% of my cpu. I keep reinstalling my pc but the problem keeps popping up.

This is not an issue but more a curiosity. I have the old Windows cup / ram monitor running as a gadget on Windows 10. When the PC is idle for a few minutes I notice the cup usage always spikes to around 10-13% and stays around that mark. As soon as I touch mouse and move it it then plummets to 0 or 1%. Is this normal? I wonder what it could be doing. It's not as if I can use task manager to see because as soon as I move the mouse or go to use the PC the usage returns to 0 or 1? I presume Windows is doing housekeeping stuff and it's a non issue?

I've recently built my new pc and it's been running fine for a week. Although recently it's been running incredibly slow. After looking around for what it might be I realised my Memory usage is 96% with nothing open.
I've looked through all the processes, there's nothing unusual everything is working fine. It's a hidden process taking up my 7.6gbs of 8gbs of Ram. I've looked around for solutions and nothings worked. Ran a simple avg virus check. Nothing.

Basically I noticed that my PC has a lot of RAM used but no program is using the RAM - see attached screenshots. Obviously it doesnt really affect me until I launch a game: eg GTA 5 which before ran happily at 60 and is now stuck on less than 1 FPS when I get into the game (even after spending like 20 minutes in lag hell to try to reduce all the settings to the lowest).
However Rainbow Six Siege runs at 120 FPS with no issues, so GTA may be an isolated incident.
(Also important to note I only have 8Gb of RAM, even though it says */16.0GB for the committed memory)
Specs are:

A while ago, after upgrading to Win10, my memory usage jumped to 99% percent while watching a movie via VLC player. I couldn't find anything in the task manager that seemed to use up all 16 gb of my memory, the new layout of task manager confused me a bit, so I simply rebooted. Fixed the problem.
Today The same thing happened to me again, except this time the memory usage continues AFTER a reboot, and then another reboot. My desktop computer seems completely possessed by whatever is using up my memory. I consider myself to be a very advanced user, although not a professional, but I can't figure out how to nail down this culprit via the task manager. Nothing seems to be using up a lot of memory, the total of all the apps isn't close enough, yet it does identify my memory usage at 99%. There were no unusual apps running in the background, just VLC running an HD 1080p movie, which I have done many times on that computer.
I can imagine this will happen again if I don't find the issue. Where to start troubleshooting to find a memory hog that only happens once in a great while? Does it have anything to do with windows updating itself secretly and automatically now?

So, I want to make my gaming PC as effective as it can be. When the PC is idle (no programs running, except task manager), I have 36 background processes and 26 system processes, Ram usage is @ 22 %, like in the picture below, I have 8 GB 1866 MHz RAM...
I am wondering, is the RAM usage too high, or is it okay for Win 10 ?
I was thinking about uninstalling the Cortana app, because it eats around 35-40.000 K, but if I erase this, I wont be able to use windows search...

from some reason, a process called "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), which I've never seen before is running and using about 30% CPU. I read in MSDN that "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is the still image acquisition platform in the Windows family of operating systems starting with Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) and Windows XP."
Does that mean that from some reason my laptop's camera is running now? Maybe my laptop was hacked?

When I'm trying to launch some programs like Mumble, Origin, or QBittorrent, maybe once or twice Blizzard Client, they just dont launch, have high cpu usage in task manager forever, and wont launch, until I delete process and try again or relogin/reset PC, more often the latter. I don't really know what do to, and updating Windows for now is hard, because I also got some problem when doing it, even by ISO.

I found out that the hard disk is 100% utilized. In Task Manager, the process that utilizes the disk the most is ESET Service. If I open Resource Monitor there are many instances of the System process that are reading the disk, not writing it. I have two partitions on my disk - one for the system and the other one for data; the extensive disk reading is done for Pictures (I assigned a folder with pictures, about 140 GB in size, to the system My Pictures folder) on the data partition.
I am not running any tests in the ESET Endpoint Antivirus software and it seems to me that the high disk activity starts when I do not do anything and just e.g. browse Internet or look at something. So, it feels like Windows is doing something, but what it is and how I can influence it. If it were disk optimizations I think I should see also disk writes, not only reads. Could it be that Windows is doing something automatic with Pictures, Documents, etc.?
I wonder what is going on - I dislike the fact that something is going on with the hard disk, making is 100% utilized and making other work very slow and non-responsive.

I seem to have an issue with one of my system processes using up an inordinate amount of RAM. It isn't causing a lot of issues right now, but it definitely bogs things down here and there. Pictures are of my task manager window on relevant tabs.

Seems to get worse when I play games. Updated to the Win 10 version of my latest graphics driver (clean install on the driver), and I have restarted my computer multiple times.

I recently got a new pc with the following specs:
i5 6600
Z-170P Motherboard
8GB DDR4
Samsung Evo 850 SSD
I'm finding myself having high CPU usage from system process. Specifically caused by ACPI.sys+0x1e7f0. (Found that through process explorer)
I'm slightly knowledgeable in all this stuff, but this goes a bit too far for me, and I can't figure out what exactly is wrong. It's just annoying to have 25% of my cpu being dedicated to this.

I see a lot of people talk about the system process and say it uses a large amount of ram when they aren't even doing anything, in my case it stays low except when I launch games.
For example I can run CSGO and system won't budge, then I can run League of Legends and itll jump to around 500-700mb or dayz where I've seen it jump to almost 2gb and dayz will actually go down in memory while system goes up. I also don't see any performance hits and when I close the game out it will shrink down to around 100mb.
My question is if this is supposed to be happening, I've found a fix in where I just disable Superfetch and system will never budge past 0.1mb. However I notice things like Skype will start using over 100mb where if superfetch was enabled it would sit at 35mb.

Recently i installed Windows 10 Pro on a Laptop Compaq Presario c700 with an Intel Celeron M530 and Intel GMA 965 express graphics card, when the laptop is idle and my screen turns off after 5 minutes, the Automatic System Maintenance starts right away and for the limited graphic chipset i think, the laptop remains unresponsive, the keyboard doesn't work, so I can't do ctrl+alt+del, the mouse pointer also disappears, the only thing i could do is a hard turn off, losing all my job....

I am using a Lenovo Y510P, originally installed with Windows 8.1. I upgraded to Windows 10 in July and it worked fine-ish up until now. I have recently (for the past few days) encountered quite frequent BSODs, most of the time with the code CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. I tried clean-resetting Windows 10 but the error kept recurring. It happened really randomly, sometimes when I was browsing the web in Chrome, sometimes when I was typing something in Skype, or in Microsoft Word, or sometimes when I just tried to refresh the desktop. So there's really no predicting when it is going to happen
P/s: After rebooting from BSOD, for some reason the system does not recognise any bootable device (and so it tries and fails to boot from my network?). But when I hard-reset the computer by holding the power button the system can boot into Windows again. I used to have grub2 bootloader for my Ubuntu, but after the first of such BSODs it died, somehow, so the system just booted straight into Windows from then on.

I'm having a problem where the system is constantly at 100%. Sometimes it goes down, but it keeps going back up to 100%. This is build 10162.How to stop this from occurring? Generally, the service MsMpEng.exe or ntoskrnl.exe which is System are at the top of the list.

Here is my laptop specification:
- HP Pavilion g4
- Intel Core i3 2.2 GHz
- Radeon 6470m (but somehow got 7400 driver and worked) plus Intel HD 3000
- Windows 10 of course
- 2 gigs ram
- And latest drivers, checked with Uniblue's driverscanner and link on other subforum stickies.
It's high memory usage of this process, it starts with ~7mb then grows up to ~200mb on heavy use. This happen with recently windows 10 update.
What I have done is, I do a restart every time I made these changes:
- SFC /scannow
- Update driver (again)
- Turn windows 10 tips off
- Try disable Superfetch
- Malwarebytes scan
- Disabling High Definition Audio driver drops the process usage to normal 28kb, but this somehow rise again to ~100mb.

Since I did a system reset, I started to have the process called " system interrupts " to consume high percentage of the cpu.
I usually avoid this issue by restarting the system twice. Another problem is the computer is no longer able to go into the sleep mode.

In my computer I use Windows 10 x64 and I have 6 GB of RAM installed. I face the problem of high usage of Ram from System process. Although I hear that this is something normal for Windows 10, this tends to freeze my PC or prompts me to close running programs although I do not have that much open. I updated all my drivers, I also tried everything proposed in various solutions around the web but the problem still exists. Could it be some update of Microsoft? A friend of mine running Windows 7 with 8GB RAM installed in his computer, faces the same problem the last weeks too.

Here is my PC configuration :
Recently I am getting notification that my memory is low, close some application to free the memory. But I wasn't running any high memory consuming programs. Then I looked into my Task manager and got this :
I am really not sure why this is taking so much memory. This Service Host: Local System continuously taking more and more memory and it moves total memory upto 80% ....
This didn't happen before I am recently facing this problem. How I can stop this so that it doesn't take this unusual memory. I checked windows update but no update is pending.

From the moment I switch ON my desktop until switching OFF (working for 12 hours) the local system service host is always between 30% to 40% regarding CPU usage. Why? How to stop it?
This does not happen in my Microsoft Surface Pro machine. Both machines, desktop and Surface have the same software installed so it's hard to believe this CPU usage is software based.

Isn't the page file supposed to fill up when your system starts running out of RAM? I know there's some preemptive paging, but I'm at 99% even though my RAM usage is 40% (of 8GBs). How come?

Also my part of the screen on the left is black. I have radeon 4650, windows found drivers but probably I will need drivers from radeon but on the web there isnt for windows 10 yet, only 8. Should I use them?

I've just upgraded my win 7 installation to win 10. The power and sleep setting was carried over, turn off screen after 5 minutes, but the monitors stay on forever. I checked the network adapters in the device manager (BT personal area network, BT RFCOMM, Realtek PCIe GBE family controller) but none of them had power options or anything related to waking up the computer.

After leaving my computer alone for a few minutes my computer restarts with a REGISTRY_ERROR BSOD. I have disabled ".NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319 Critical" and ".NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319 64 Critical" and also ran sfc/scannow with no integrity violation. I uninstalled and reinstalled my graphics drivers and also reseated the card.
