View 9 RepliesI have an external drive where the electronics of the case has failed. I have switched the drive into my pc so that I can use it as an internal drive. The drive is still operational but I cannot see it listed in my drives. Opening up disk manager shows the drive is clearly visible there but is no volume letters assigned to it. The easy option would be to delete the partitions and create new. However, the drive is divided into several partitions which I want to keep as they contain a lot of important data files (years of photos for one thing). Disk manager wont allow me to assign any drive letters (option is grayed out) and disk partition only shows me a single partition not the 5 partitions I have on the drive. how do I assign volume letters without losing my data?
View 3 RepliesI tried the Windows 10 upgrade when it first came out and immediately went back to 8.1 when I couldn't get a single one of my internal SATA hard drives to mount.. I have 5 of them, and I just wasn't about to mess with that when 8.1 had no problems at all. Now I have tried it again and the same problem is happening. I want to see if I can figure it out this time. I am using the latest SATA and Chipset drivers for Win10 64 bit from Gigabyte's Website (I am using a Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Rev. 1.1.
I am "testing" Win10 using a bootable clone of my main SSD (that still has 8.1 on it) and I upgraded it to 10 just to mess with so I can figure out this ridiculous problem.
My problem is that all of my internal SATA hard drives (with the exception of the system drive) cannot be assigned a drive letter in Disk Management. They show as healthy NTFS partitions but I get 1 of 2 different errors when I click on "Change Drive letters and Paths":
1. "Virtual Disk Manager: The System cannot find the file specified."
2 "Disk Management: The operation filed to complete because the Disk Management Console view is not up-to date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart disk management or restart the computer" Hint: none of the recommended fixes in the error message change anything.
I HAVE been able to assign the partitions a letter and mount them using a third party disk manager called "MiniTool Partition Wizard". It lets me mount the partitions and it works! ..However, if I restart the computer, I am back to square one and have to manually assign each drive letter for each partition every time.
This is easily the worst experience I have ever had upgrading an OS, and one of the most mind boggling issues I have had with Windows in general. I really like Windows 10 and want to keep using it but half of my hard drives being un-mountable is a complete deal breaker right now.
I have just set up a mirror drive(software RAID1) and want to change the drive letter. I am getting a message "The parameter is incorrect". I am wondering if I am stuck with the one assigned when the mirror drive was set up.
View 6 RepliesHow do I assign a range of letters, that can be used for e.g. external flash disks, external ssd's/hdd's or memory cards?
I have this nasty issue. I have two Network Attached Drives, on server. They work fine, D and E. But I also have NAS [DS 716+] which is on NAS drive F:. Whenever I shut down my DS 716+, and I connect some external hdd/ssd/memory card, it always asigns letter F:. Which makes these devices quiet inaccessible, or hard accessible, I can't double click them to open, I need to type in manually F: etc.
Is there any way via msc or something, where I can define a range of all external hdd's/ssd's and/or memory cards?
Still learning Win 10 ways! I have installed a WD My Book backup drive, and Win 10 gave it the designation of my "G" drive. How do I change from "G" to a different unused letter?
View 3 RepliesI have a situation where I need drives F and G available for scheduled file backups, and I like to play a game which involves mounting an ISO as a virtual drive, which would normally become F. Earlier today, I discovered a way to keep F and G available by creating to small ISOs and putting shortcuts to them in the startup folder. Then at backup time, I can just unmount drives F and G and plug in the flash drives. That seems to work fine, but since it seems a bit awkward to create ISOs just for that purpose, I was wondering whether there might be another way.
View 2 RepliesAfter the store where I bought my pc from repaired my pc (seems like it was a drivers issue) it came back with disk F (the ssd) renamed to C, so now all my shortcuts on the favourites say this:
It's pretty annoying, I cant call them on a Saturday about the issue. I know they tried booting up with an external disk and that's why it's renamed, but I can't rename it back to F, I've tried it and it gives me an error because the disk is in use I think, I've also tried using MiniTool Partition Wizard Free and the optiong to change disk letter disappears when I click on the one I need changed..
I have a Seagate SATA 500GB HD as a second HD. Windows 10 deletes the letter of the drive every time I reboot/turn off my PC, and I have to reassign the drive letter. Why is this happening and how to fix it?
View 1 RepliesI've installed W10 in my laptop in a dual boot configuration with W7 successfully. I used this tutorial Windows 10 - Dual Boot with Windows 7 or Windows 8 I'm setting up to do the same thing in my desktop and have a couple questions about drive letter designation after doing it. I created a 30G partition on the C drive of my desktop for the W10 install.
My laptop has one drive, the OS "C" drive, I created a another partition for W10, after installing W10 using the USB ISO "boot from USB" instruction when I'm in W10 it shows as the C drive, and the W7 partition is inactive D drive. Just the opposite when I'm in W7, it shows as the active C partition and W10 is the inactive D partition.
On my desktop I have the 120G C drive for W7, a 500G D drive for backups, a fixed CD-ROM E drive, and a virtual CD-ROM F drive. I've made a 30G partition on the C drive to install W10 on for the dual boot. The question is when the auto backup runs (I have it backup & image every Sunday at 7:00pm) it backs up the C drive to the D drive. Will the W10 dual boot install change my backup drive letter to something other than D, or will the non OS physical drives keep the same drive letter? I will have to remember to be in W7 for it to be the C drive when it backs up, but my concern was if the dual boot was going to change my backup drive to something other than D. That would affect the backup.
I've attached disk mgmt. below, FYI the G drive is the USB with the W10 ISO
When I go to disk management and right click on my # 2 HDD to give it a drive letter, it only shows Convert to Dynamic Disk, Properties and Help. change drive letter and paths does not show up ??.
View 1 RepliesIn my desktop I have two hard disks ( disk 0 and disk 1 ) . Disk 1 is a clone of disk 0 created by Macrium Reflect
Disk 0 : ( C: ) windows 10 pro , upgrade from windows 7 , ( E: ) windows 8.1 pro , ( G: ) Storage partition
Disk 1 : clone of disk 0
problem description : I see in msconfig / boot a wrong listing
windows 10 ( C:WINDOWS) : Current OS ; Default OS
windows 8.1 pro ( H:WINDOWS ) instead of ( E:WINDOWS )
Nevertheless the dual booting works fine as well as the shift between the disks via BIOS.
The question is , could I fix the situation using the EasyBCD of Neosmart Technologies to edit the bootloader ?
I see can change drive letter H: to E: and save the change , am I right or wrong ? or any other way ....
I'm using static IP for Network #1 which is 192.168.1.110
But when I try joining another network let's say network #2 with a router address like 192.168.43.1 i have to change network settings and use another static IP 192.168.43.10
Can't i just ask windows to use static IP 192.168.1.110 when i try to connect to network #1 and 192.168.43.10 when I connect to network #2 without having to manually configure it every time ?
I really have to use static IPs when connecting to those two particular networks...
By default .cur and .ani cursor files are not associated with opening by any program, and a thumbnail of the pic contents is displayed in the file explorer icons. When I assign a program for opening the file (ThumbsPlus, ACDSee, RealWorld Cursor Editor, whatever), the contents thumbnail changes to that program's icon. No more thumbnail or preview in the pane either. The only way I can get the thumbnail to return is to go to settings and Reset all default apps (which de-assigns those file types back to no program association).
Workaround is I use the "open with" menu command and make SURE I uncheck the "Always use this app to open...." box.
This does not happen to .jpg, .png, .ico or any other graphic type file. They all show thumbnails no matter what the program association. Only .cur / .ani.
Is this something we live with in Win 10? ...or am I "special"? I don't remember seeing this on Win 7, XP or any in history.
The pic below shows the thumbnails with "Opens with: Unknown application". As soon as I assign, no more thumbnail...
No matter what I do Windows always labels my secondary TV screen as my PC screen and vice versa. It's not really a problem in terms of functionality but it does annoy me that I can't change it. I've been through countless televisions and GPU's over the years but it always remains so possibly there is a good reason for it?
Anyway, the 'issue' has been persistent since W7 (and possibly before?) but I'm wondering if there is now/or always has been a work around for this?
Edit: This post explains it better Changing monitor identities?
It's extremely difficult to assign default programs (either no option for "default" or it just doesn't take my choice) for different media, but once assigned, Win10 later forgets the default program and opens it with another.I have assigned all audio file types (mp3, wav, m3u etc.) to open with Winamp. I've done this by manually assigning a default program for every single file type in "Control Panel - Default Programs - Associate a file type...", because every other option failed.
Later, after a reboot, it still shows "Winamp" in the list of file types. But Win10 now opens m3u-files with VLC player! I'm going hardcore, with registry keys etc - only need the info. some file types are not listed under "Control Panel - Default Programs - Associate a file type...". How can i assign these missing file types to a program?
Just sort of curious, I noticed that in disk management that I had 4 drives listed
C:
GAMES (H:)
STORAGE (F:)
HONDA AND VOLVO (D:)
But then there was another drive simply listed as "GAMES".
I always thought it was just some screw up and a duplicate of the H drive (since they both are named as "GAMES") which has games on it but the odd part was that it didn't have a drive letter associated with it after the upgrade to 10.
It was a listed drive in Windows 7 so wondering why the drive letter was removed during the Windows 10 upgrade.
Today i did a fresh install of win 10 Home today on my laptop but i'm unable to see my NAS Drive in my network. I can put the nas address into the address bar in my Network and i can access it but i don't like to do it that way. I also use Kodi media center and now my nas is not showing in my network i can't add media content.
View 9 RepliesI'm having trouble setting the windows 10 file history drive. The drive I'm trying to use is Y: on disk 4 in the disk management image attached, which shares a 4TB hdd with another two partitions. It uses GPT and is a dynamic disk. All partitions are formatted as NTFS. When I go to file history and attempt to set the drive, only another partition on a different hdd is selectable which I would prefer to not use.
I was able to use this drive for file history up until I reinstalled windows 10 recently, where I formatted down to windows 7 from windows 10 tech preview, then upgraded to windows 10 to activate my old win 7 key. This was done after a recent major hardware upgrade (motherboard/cpu/ram). The 4TB hdd wouldn't have been touched by any of the windows installation procedures and I haven't set any page or hybernation files to it. The only difference is that it's plugged into a different motherboard. The old motherboard was a Gigabyte GA-980FXA UD5 (rev 2101) and the new one is a Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming GT G1 (rev 1).
I've had a look around on the web, and solutions have asked to remove any folders on the partition from libraries, which I have done as far as I can tell, with no success (there weren't any in the first place, but there were some on the other partitions which I've removed). Another solution was to share the partition with full read/write access to everybody. This did work, but it seems like terrible work around rather than a fix.
I'm guessing this might have something to do with the GBT/dynamic nature of the disk, but if that was the case then it shouldn't have worked before the reinstalls as it should still be the same.
I have 3 drives on my computer:
My windows drive (SSD) on C:
My Gaming drive (HDD) on D:
My Extra space drive (HDD) on E:
I can not format E:
Here is my Disc management:
I have tried opening an Admin Command Prompt and typing: BCDBOOT C:WINDOWS /s C:
I wish to get rid of all files on E: so I can use it for raw videos.
I've newly installed W10 Pro and am constantly being pestered with permission nags (see attached) while attempting to reorganise files within the Local Disk.
I've tried changing the User permissions via "Properties>Security" but encounter nothing but a load of error messages.
I upgraded from Windows 7, bypassing 8 entirely so I've never had to tackle this issue before. I'd like full access without annoying UAC-related notifications every two minutes!
I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 and I wanna play a old game which requires the disk to run, it worked fine in W7 because it could find my DVD drive, but now it is simply not there... Not even in Device Manager.
View 1 RepliesI have one key working only when held down long enough (when it starts to spray that letter). Not an hardware problem.
Estonian keyboard layout. English keyboard layout works fine. Finnish keyboard layout has different key not working.
On-screen keyboard has same problem.
Problem started just one day. Before was fine. I have tried some malware scans, registry fixes, safe mode, keyboard driver reinstall, other keyboard.
Where could this problem be located? Registry? Someone in internet thinks its malware. I dont think I installed something new previous to that problem.
I have a NAS (WD MyBookLive) which cannot be accessed in Windows Explorer on my brand new Surface by IP address (or name- though that doesn't work on any of my devices for some reason). I can access the config page in my browser by IP, and two other Win10 devices on my network can access the NAS by IP in Explorer fine, and I can access other devices on my network by IP fine on the Surface but for whatever reason only this computer can't access that NAS in Win Explorer.
I just got the Surface yesterday and was able to access the NAS fine, the only thing that's changed is I renamed the device and restarted and since then haven't been able to connect. I've restarted both the PC again and the NAS but no change.
While trying to create a recovery dish I get message that an error occurred and unable to create a recovery disk. If I uncheck backup system files to recovery drive it,creates the drive. Not having the system files will I still be able to use it to boot my pc if I need to. Originally Windows 7.

On my laptop I have a 1 TB HDD and on that drive the usable space was formatted into 2 separate partitions. This doesn't work well for me and I would prefer to have just one partition with all of the usable space. So I've tried everything I can think of and for some reason I just can't get the partitions to merge or even delete the secondary partition and expand the one I want to use. I have some pictures below to show what's going on.
This one shows the two partitions that I want merged.
This next one shows that I cannot extend the partition even if the other partition was deleted and is unpartitioned space
This last one shows that even with a 3rd party software I get the same result as EaseUS Partition Master doesn't give me the option to merge or move/re-size the partition
So at this point I'm stumped and I don't understand why this won't work as I've done the same thing with many other computers easily in disk management.
