Unable To Search Or Click START After Upgrading
Aug 7, 2015
A couple of days back I upgraded to windows 10. I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 successfully and no problems. After that today I open my laptop and I have a black screen. I move my touchpad thinking I'm going to get to the login screen but still nothing happens. I hit the power button on my laptop to shut down and it does that. I turn on my computer I'm able to get to the login screen. I put my password then I see a black screen. I have IObit Advanced SystemCare so in the corner that's what I see but the rest is black. I wait for a while nothing happens then shut off the pc. Same thing happened and then I think at the third or fourth time I turn on my computer then go to the living room and come back and it's fixed. I play Minecraft so I was doing that. I also have a touchpad issue where when I hold the keys down I can't move my mouse but I already know the solution for that and so when I go to click the start button nothing happens. I was confused and thought maybe it was just slower than normal. I clicked the search button; nothing happened. I then search up on the web "unable to click start button on windows 10" and I find a post with a solution but wasn't really for me:
Open Windows PowerShell as Administrator
Right click Start buttonChoose Command prompt (Admin)Key in Powershell in the black window and hit Enter
Paste the following command in the Administrator: Windows PowerShell window and press Enter key:Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}Wait for PowerShell to execute and complete the command. Ignore the few errors (in red color) that may pop up.When it finishes, try hitting Start and hopefully itll start working. If not, this solution wont apply to you, unfortunately.

This didn't actually work I have my cmd open still and nothing has happened.

I managed to update the Windows to the last version, but now when I want to click here:
Task View opens, but search and start does not.
I had to take a photo because I cannot open paint, since I can't open the start menu.

I'm running the RTM on a netbook and have noticed that, unlike in Windows 7/8/8.1, I'm no longer able to hit Start and type in an executable. I have a bunch of portable apps that I typically type in and pull up. Now, the Start menu search pulls up ever OTHER file except the executable. It's very annoying and don't see why this shouldn't work.
What's worse, is if I pin the app to the start menu, it doesn't search it then. Say, I pin "puttyportable.exe" as a shortcut (and rename it to just PuTTY) to the start menu. Typing in "putty" gives me nothing - just the same associated files that were in the puttyportable folder (ini files, etc).

I'm fully up to date on W10 x64 and have just noticed that I can no longer (as in, I could a few days ago) right click on certain apps to run as admin. I can't even use the 'menu' keyboard button to open the right click menu either, this does nothing.
I *can* do so on things like Wordpad and notepad, but 'admin-y' apps like Control Panel, Device Manager, and Administrative Tools show no menu when I right click, nothing appears or happens.
how I can get it back?

When I press/click on Start, and then type 'Power' for instance to get PowerShell, I want to right click and Run as administrator. Somehow that is gone. I can only Pin to Start. Did updates, reboots, etc. I cannot even click and drag icons from the Start menu - just has a red X. I had to make a shortcut on the desktop to run PowerShell as an admin. It works on another Windows 10 machine no issues.

I have upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I had problems going into and out of sleep mode which seem have been resolved by installing updates for Intel Graphics. Now I can't get anything to come up when I left click on the Start button. All of the other icons in the task bar will only work with a left click of the mouse, nothing happens with a right click. Also, I did not get Cortana when I upgraded to Windows 10 on this device. I also upgraded another lap top and have Cortana on that one. With all of these problems occurring one after the other, can I reinstall Windows 10?

Updated my Win 7 Pro x64 computer last night to Windows 10. Now can't click on the start menu items or really any windows menu. Some other random things won't accept a left click either. Chrome seems to respond just fine but not firefox. I'm puzzled. I have a Razer Naga 2014 but tried a Cheap little logitech mouse with same results. I also logged into my machine Via team viewer from work and left click still doesn't work on things.
I'd be totally fine doing a fresh install but not sure of the procedure yet to have it activate without installing windows 7 first then doing the upgrade again.

Since upgrading to Win 10 I don't seen to be able to search. When I type something into the "Search the web and Windows" box, I get the following message, "We can't connect to web search right now but you can still search your stuff. Make sure you are currently connected to the internet." I am connected to the internet as my web browsers all work and so does my email client, Outlook.
If I go into Network and Internet|Ethernet, the Local Area Connection icon displays "Connected" under it. If I click on "Network and Sharing Center" under "View you active networks" it says "You are currently not connected to any networks." If I click on "Set up a new connection or network" and then choose a connection option of "Connect to the Internet" and then the "Next" button, I get a message "You are already connected to the Internet" ?????

So I recently updated to Windows 10 on my custom built PC (here's the components in case you want to know: [URL] ....) Anyways I like it, but I'm having a few issues with it. Some have to do with my CPU, but the main thing is that Windows Explorer is being very annoying. I almost always put my computer to sleep as opposed to shutting it down because I have a slow HDD.
However, after I put my PC to sleep once or twice I can't click on the Windows button or the "Search the web and Windows button", which means I can't open any applications that aren't on my desktop. It's pretty annoying. If I try to restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager, it never fully restarts. I just get a black screen and the task bar, which still doesn't work. I've had to switch the power button on my computer's task to putting the PC to sleep instead of shutting it down because I can't put my computer to sleep the normal way.

Win 10 Enterprise. Worked fine for a couple of days, but now I cannot seem to bring up the start menu and start typing anything. It will not search. I also tried in the search box or spyglass... I just click on it and nothing happens. It is a major inconvenience. I don't want to do a restore and keep my files, because there is a HUGE list of applications I will then need to restore. I also tried to click on Cortana, but clicking the app does nothing, doesn't even bring it up.
I tried re-indexing search items, I tried the search troubleshooter. I have rebooted, I have installed all updates. Someone on another forum said kill the Cortana task... well there isn't one running.

I'm unable to type all special characters that require the Alt key to be pressed. €, ², ³, μ, and most importantly, @, are no longer possible with a German keyboard layout. I tried German German and Austrian German, and both failed to produce those signs. Normally, the @ sign is produced by pressing Alt+q, but since upgrading to Windows 10, nothing happens when I press Alt+q (or any other combination of Alt+letter).
Only German keyboard layouts seem to be affected, as I'm able to use Alt+letter combinations in other languages; just not in German.

Due to corrupt windows files my pc is unable to start. i am able to go into the bios, but after that it will freeze on the windows logo during start up. i have made a usb windows 10 installer and tried to start the pc up using that as my hard drive (went into bios and changed it to use that as my hard drive) but it still freezes on the same screen. I even unplugged my hdd and booted up but the same thing happens so I don't believe the problem is with my hd.

For some reason, Windows 10 taskbar is behaving in an odd fashion. I am unable to right click on the icons on the taskbar. I am able to launch the application, sure, such as file explorer etc., with the left click, but right clicking on any icon has no effect.
On the other hand, I am not able to left click on any of the icons in the system tray, but I am able to use the right click to bring up the menu. The same goes for the Start button (Windows button).
So in essence, right click on the icons in the taskbar does not work, and the left click on icons in the system tray, does not work. The opposite action on both, works...
I have restarted the system, and restarted the Windows explorer process as well, to no avail.

I am unable to use the SEARCH THE WEB AND WINDOWS function in Windows 10. When I click on its icon on the task bar, the hour glass circle flashes momentarily and immediately goes off. What needs to be enabled in MS CONFIG for this function to work? I have enabled every item in MS CONFIG, and still the problem persists. Also, could there be a driver problem involved?

When I click on the Windows icon in the lower left-hand corner, and type in the name of a program that I know I have installed, it does not come up for me. If I go into Task Manager, and kill the process, Cortana, and then re-do the search, I am now able to search again. Is there a fix instead of always having to manually go into Task Manager and kill the running Cortana process?

This problem is on a desktop computer (HP Pavilion). When I click the start button, the start menu does not display. Pressing the Windows key on the keyboard also does not take me to the start menu.
I can access the right-click menu on the start button and most of the items on the right-click menu respond correctly when clicked (a few don't. No response from "Search" and "Desktop"). I installed Windows 10 over a month ago and have had no problems until now. Everything was working fine yesterday and to the best of my knowledge I have changed no settings since then.

I've just upgraded my laptop to Win10 (did my desktop several months ago). The laptop is unable to take input to the Search the web and Windows task bar. I've searched the web, but all I've found was references to killing and restarting Search from the task manager, but there is no Search running. Also any time I try to start Cortana, I can see it start in Task Manager, but it then disappears. So the short of it is can't start Cortana and there is no Search running to restart. How do I get this feature to work?

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 on my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop from Windows 7. After updating, I'm unable to check on updates. I get:
There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may support: (0x8007042c)
Looking online, I find this has something to do with the firewall but my firewall appears to working fine.

I installed Windows 10 very recently and I like it, but I have a VERY BIG show-stopper: when I try to do search in the start menu, it's terrible; it cannot even find an application that I have manually pinned to start. I didn't have any such problem with Windows 8.1. I have also installed some other desktop applications, for example GitHub for Windows, but when I start to to type "Git...", it only finds "GitHub" and it cannot find "Git Shell" and I have to go to all programs, find "G", then expand the folder for this application and run that application.
