Unable To Unpin Cortana From Taskbar
Jan 14, 2016
I'm a minimalist, preferring not to clutter up my screen with all kinds of icons, etc.
I used to have Cortana hidden off screen, but still able to respond to me if I said; "Hey, Cortana."
Now, recently, the icon has popped up on my taskbar, and when I go to change it, hide it, etc. I only get the options of "Show App Icons" "Show All Notification Icons" and "Show Touch Keyboard Button"
I want to use Cortana, but cut down on all of the icons on my desktop screen. I don't think it was this way before the recent W10 update.

I've searched everywhere, and even uninstalled Cortana from Windows Features.. It's no longer running.. but i can't figure out how to unpin it from the Start Menu.
FYI: Removing hidden Windows Features:
- you'll need win6x_registry_tweak from MSFN or here's a mirror.
- you can remove Windows Defender, Adobe Flash, Search, Indexer, HyperV, etc.. completely
Available commands:
Code:
install_wim_tweak.exe /o /l
- list all packages
Code:
install_wim_tweak.exe /o /c **PACKAGE** /r
- remove package

I love Windows 10. I really do. Every time I right-click a tile, select something such as "Unpin from Start," absolutely nothing happens. The tile remains, I can reshape it, move it, just like before. I can even open it from the Start menu. When I right click the tile again, I see "Pin to Start," even though it's already there.
The thing is, when I restart my computer, all the changes have been made. Basically what I've learned is that every time I want to re-do my Start Menu, I have to restart the computer multiple times.
I had reserved my free Windows 10 upgrade for my 2-in-1 Dell Inspiron 13 7000 laptop. However, even though the application said my notification was coming, I couldn't wait. I downloaded the operating system from the Microsoft website before I received my notification. Does this premature download have anything to do with it?
This only happens with the options "Unpin from Start" and "Pin to Start."

Did the Win 10 update last night. Now I can't run my pinned Excel files ("The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?") But when I say Yes, it's not removed. If I click the icon for "Unpin from this list" it is also not removed. If I right click the item on the Pinned list and click "Unpin from this list" it is not removed. If I drag the file from its folder down to the icon ("Pin to Microsoft Excel") nothing changes.
The update apparently changed the locations of all the pinned files from my nonstandard location (D:DropboxCurrent where D is my Data drive) to elsewhere (C:UsersDaveDocumentsDropboxCurrent, which location does not exist). I can't figure out how to change this. The pinned list seems to be somehow locked so I can't change it, and this is the essence of the problem.

How to unpin the search & task view from the taskbar? They take valuable space in the taskbar while they can easily be triggered with windows key shortcuts.

So I've tried so many things, There's another post on here where you put a command in powershell and that doesn't seem to be working. Some people say their anti-virus software caused the issue and i uninstalled mine and still nothing! I'll try everything that's commented even if I've done it before.
I believe I got the message saying start menu and cortana aren't working and that they'll work on startup. I dont remember getting it but after reading about an issue where someone mentioned it I vaguely remember just ignoring it. If you need any specs, I'll provide them. I keep trying to ignore this issue but would really like to try and fix it.

Ok so, this is my work computer and I did the upgrade to windows 10 and my first reaction was to go thru and get rid of all these apps and things I don't need on a work computer. Well, Cortana was one of the first things to go. Big mistake. I realized later that Cortana was the only way to search my computer for files. I had removed her search box, and the little O icon on my taskbar. The only place she remains is in the start menu.
I have been googling for 2 days now trying to figure out how to put that dang search box BACK ONTO MY TASKBAR! I cannot right click the taskbar and select Cortana and choose to hide or place on taskbar or anything of that nature like all the articles I keep reading, because I removed her completely.
See?? Not there, no Cortana mentioned at all.
I cannot drag Cortana out of the start menu and pin it back on the taskbar, it simply will not let me.
Nowhere in the settings can I find the option to put Cortana back as a search bar on my taskbar. Or to just put her back on the taskbar as the O icon. I used the search feature from my start menu in Windows 7 daily. Yes, I can open the start menu and click on cortana, then click on the search box and type my inquiry, but 9 times out of 10 I am on the phone with someone spouting off information that needs to be accessed quickly and eliminating the few extra clicks it takes to access Cortana like I am currently, would make me so very happy.

I've upgraded to Windows 10. I'm trying to set up Cortana (in UK) and I'm stuck with a sign in problem with MS account.
I know my MS account password but the next window asks for my previous password, which I don't remember. In fact, I didn't have to log in to my local account. I've tried several different passwords and I've tried it 'blank' but to no avail.
So, I'm stuck! I can still use my machine ok but I can't finish setting up Cortana.

I have tried everything under the sun to fix this. The search/Cortana button on the taskbar is unresponsive. Whenever I try to adjust setting under Cortana & Search I get this error:
ms-cortana://StartMode=Settings&QuerySource=Settings
The app didn't start

I'm unable to access the start menu, cortana, or even my calendar. Can't even do it in safe mode. The thing is though, this is only on my main account (which happens to be a microsoft connected account), I have no issue accessing them with the other two (local) accounts on my computer. I've uninstalled any software or updates that I had installed prior to this issue appearing and ran a virus scan but the problem still persists. I'm not quite sure what to do at this point because this is such a weird issue.

A guy in my office just upgraded to windows 10 and it looks completely different from other installations I've seen. The start button isn't the 4 equally-sized rectangles, the top left one is hollow and bigger than the other 3, if that means anything. Anyway, when "use small taskbar buttons" is unchecked in taskbar properties, the first few taskbar buttons are hidden behind the search box on the taskbar.
I found this out by accident because I opened one more window and it barely peeked out from the right side of the search box. What can be doing this? BTW this is not the icons in the notification area, these are the program buttons pinned to the taskbar. Also, his start menu doesn't have tiles, it looks almost exactly like the Windows 7 start menu. To me, it's starting to feel like a skin/theme for windows 7, rather than an actual upgrade, and he got taken in by someone, somehow.

After some time of trying out Windows 10, I've realized that for some reason I am unable to customize the taskbar in Windows 10. I've tried dragging shortcuts to "Pin to Start menu", but to no avail. I have also tried unpinning items from the right-hand side with all the apps, but they never disappear, only have the option from "Unpin to Start" to "Pin to Start". Is there any way for me to solve this problem without resetting or reinstalling/uninstalling Windows 10?

For some reason, Windows 10 taskbar is behaving in an odd fashion. I am unable to right click on the icons on the taskbar. I am able to launch the application, sure, such as file explorer etc., with the left click, but right clicking on any icon has no effect.
On the other hand, I am not able to left click on any of the icons in the system tray, but I am able to use the right click to bring up the menu. The same goes for the Start button (Windows button).
So in essence, right click on the icons in the taskbar does not work, and the left click on icons in the system tray, does not work. The opposite action on both, works...
I have restarted the system, and restarted the Windows explorer process as well, to no avail.

I've just upgraded to windows 10 from windows 8.1 and I'm experiencing a glitch: when I try an pin or unpin things (e.g. from the start menu or quick access menu in explorer) the icons don't move.
However in the context menu the text that said "Unpin from start" or "Unpin from quick access" changes to "Pin to start" or "Pin to quick access respectively".
I've tried doing a sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt but it showed no errors and has made no difference.
The same thing happens when I try to uninstall apps, they don't move.

I've upgraded from Windows 8.1 (x64) and I wanted to change my start menu tiles since I had a start menu as opposed to the start screen. Naturally, I tried right-clicking the tiles that were present and unpinning them from the start menu, but the option doesn't show up! If I try and right-click shortcuts, executable files, or menu items for programs the option to pin the item to the start menu doesn't show up.
I can pin things to my taskbar easily, but I can't pin it to start at all! I'm currently running Windows 10 Build 10240 on a 64-bit Intel i7-4500U (Dual-Core) @ 2Ghz with 8GB RAM and Intel Integrated GPU.

I would like to automatize cleaning the Windows 10's start menu from all these default pinned apps that I'm not using. I don't want to remove apps, only unpin from from start.
I tried to google, but didn't find any. There seems to be no command to pin and unpin apps in start menu. Any alternative methods? The information about the configuration of start menu must be stored somewhere....

A few days ago, after an automatic Windows 10 update on my desktop computer, I found that: right clicking icons on the taskbar does nothing - none of the options appear; the start button on the left of the taskbar only works by right-clicking and accessing the old Windows 8 style options; the search icon on the taskbar does nothing; the Windows 10 calculator has disappeared - when I press the calculator key on my keyboard a message appears saying "You'll need a new app to open this calculator". It seems to have been deleted from the computer.
Until these things happened Windows 10 was working well.
