I thought win 10 was able to unzip files natively. Some folders I can right click on and unzip with windows explorer, sometimes I don't get that option. Other times in get the winzip collection fund screen... Just curious if Win 10 can unzip files without 3rd party software.

View 9 RepliesI am trying to unzip a picture file and it isn't working. The file is labeled as a zip file but the folder does't have a zipper on it. Is this new to Windows 10 or is this some other type of zip file? I have attached a screenshot below. The file was a download from Google Photos.

Before win10 (until 8.1), I was able to open image files within zipped folder with Windows Photo Viewer and view next/previous pictures. After upgraded to win10, I can still open a pictures file within zipped folder but can no longer continuously view next/previous image. I have to either unzip or double each one to open.

View 1 RepliesRunning clean install Windows 10 pro, I did add a reg fix to enable photo viewer, which worked fine.
I have a many picture folders, which I was able to view all fine. Suddenly only on a few folders (approx 3 from 40) I started getting "windows photo viewer can't open this picture because either photo viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to photo viewer, error. I tried to view the same jpg's using Win10 photo and get the error "it appears we don't support this file format"... One folder has a BMP image which also won't open with any app, including paint.
Went to my backup copies, same issue. I can eliminate any malware or virus issue as I regularly scan my PC. I'm concerned because I could view these jpg's previously, I am thinking some sort of registry issue. I copied folder to USB and tried to open on another Win10 PC, with the same result. I then tried to open the jpg's on a Win 7 machine, same result. Have moved file from folder still won't open, check attributes of folder/files, I have full rights.
Now I'm concerned that the 40 or so "precious" files have become corrupt which would include my backup copies. The fact I've tried to access these files on three devices without success.
One Win10 device has the following event log entry;
"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Photos_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."
Copying un-effective JPEGS into the effective folders open, copying singles files from other folders to affective folder won't open.
I tried to upload a file that won't open, it returns the message photo1.jpg this is not a valid image file.
At a loss as I can't open these files on three devices...
since installing Windows 10, I can not save updates to word files or anything to a folder. I've read I should change the user settings that default to 'read-only' in the system folder. I've done this 3 times. The fix doesn't work.

View 2 RepliesSo currently when I go into "This PC" I have 6 icons at the top : Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures & Videos.
As I'm running my OS off a 120gb SSD I typically store my documents/photos/videos etc on another drive, in this case my D drive. If I right click > Properties on these folders there is a tab titled Location, which normally lets me change where the folder points to. However on both the Documents and Pictures folders I see the following issue when trying to change away from the default "Onedrive" location :
Note : This is the error I get when I try to move the folder location ANYWHERE, not just to the D drive.
As with many I have upgraded to Windows 10 today and it is going well except for the fact I am unable to save any files or create new ones in the Documents and Pictures folders or any sub-folders within these folders. For instance, I tried to save an image created in paint and attempted to save it in the Pictures folder, it gave me the error message seen in this picture below:
Note, I am the only user on the system, and also the admin account so I do not know why it says this. Clicking Yes on the box does nothing and the same thing still occurs afterward. In addition, bringing up the right click menu and going to new only allows me to create a new folder, and the windows admin shield icon appears next to it. Deleting files also prompts me to ask for admin permission but in that case I can simply click the continue button and it goes through.
I have the option "Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar" off.
However since the last update whenever I either copy or move a file into any folder windows puts that folder under the Recent group in the taskbar.
On Windows 7 start menu you could have a folder such as EA Games and then sub folders within. For example a folder for tiger woods golf, a folder for say Fifa and so on. It seems on Windows 10 you can only have one folder level. I have tried creating sub folders but all the shortcuts within the sub folders all appear under the one top/master folder when actually viewing the start menu. Am I correct in this observation/restriction?
View 9 RepliesDue to corrupt windows files my pc is unable to start. i am able to go into the bios, but after that it will freeze on the windows logo during start up. i have made a usb windows 10 installer and tried to start the pc up using that as my hard drive (went into bios and changed it to use that as my hard drive) but it still freezes on the same screen. I even unplugged my hdd and booted up but the same thing happens so I don't believe the problem is with my hd.

And all my folders and programs are gone. There's just one folder left on my desktop and all of them are empty.My downloads folder is also empty, there's just one folder left and its empty.

3 days ago I was exploring an older hard drive. When I tried to explore the desktop folder of that drive Windows Vista, it wouldn't open. It suggested that i shared the folder so I could explore it or copy files from that folder(which is what I originally wanted to do). When I did, the folders on any drive stopped opening. When I try to open any folder, it flashes white and returns to the desktop.

Is there any way to trim this list? In particular, for some reason C drive, as well as any attached external drives, show up twice each. There doesn't seem to be any way of getting them to remember a default view - the same things appear everytime I open every folder. This didn't happen in Win7. I'm logged in as admin, there are no other accounts
I've had Windows 10 for about a month now. Everything has been going well. Then this AM I tried to open a folder on my desktop but it will not open. I right click on it to only go back to my home screen.I cant even get into my documents.
No folders what so ever. I clicked on properties to check the securities and all is well there.
Since I have upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, I noticed that all my folders' attributes are read only . Even if I create new folders, they are read only on creation. When I try to remove the read only attribute in the folder properties, it looks like it's removed, but when I check it again, it shows that it's read only. I tried other methods, like diskpart, and tried to take ownership of the folders
Is there any way to fix this problem? I can create new files and modify existing files in the folders without any problem, but it's really annoying, for example Steam says it can't install games and updates, because the folder what I choose to install games is in read only mode, the only solution is to run it as an administrator. I need to run almost every program as an admin, to make them usable, or they report problems with read only folders. The OS itself is up to date.
I have been unable to create new folders in File Explorer. When I click on a new folder icon, I get the "not responding" message and have to exit the application. This began happening several weeks ago and is now happening whenever I try to create a new folder.

I'd like to keep the folders under quick access, and I would like to keep the folders in general, but they simply do not belong right by the drives under "This PC". View 7 RepliesI have been using windows 10 on my Acer Aspire since Microsoft first offered it. Today it has come up with a bit of a surprise. I no longer have the ability to create new folders on my desktop or anywhere else. Previously I would right click on the desktop and in the popup window select "new" then "folder" et voila a new folder. Now if I right click I get no such options.
View 1 RepliesI think MS has been doing this for awhile, but I want to make sure that any solution works for Windows 10: Any administrator account can muscle into another user's folders. It doesn't matter that the folder isn't shared, or how many times you manually remove the shared access, because the only barrier to entry is a pointless warning prompt. The only thing you can do really AFAIK is manually deny permissions for specific accounts in the security tab of a folder's properties.
But there's nothing stopping an administrator account from making another account that hasn't been blacklisted. And you can't deny the Administrator group unless you want to be locked out of your own folders, since the group denial will trump your user access. Hope I'm missing something here....
when i open "My PC" or any folder in my desktop windows 10 remembers if i resize it, but always randomize the position a bit lower.

Like I backup my acc'tng. 2 to 3 times a week and save in a folder but now I can't create these folders. I was able to go to open space on desktop and right click and a list would come up and there was new folder add and I would click and it would at this folder then I could name it now I can't. When I go there now the list I get is View, sort by, refresh, display settings and personalize. How to add a desktop folder?
