Updates :: Settings Configured To Automatically Download And Install
Sep 28, 2015
I have my settings configured to automatically download and install Windows updates, yet every single day I have to manually check for updates and there are always updates found, which then proceed to be installed. Why is this? By very definition, shouldn't "automatic updates" mean that nothing should be found when manually checking for them? Yet this is a daily occurrence.

I have windows 10 pro and I have edited the group policy for windows update and has set it to notify me to download. My problem is that after a few days windows automatically download updates and install them though I had set it to notify to download. It seems that the settings are not permanent and windows resets the group policy settings. How can i make the settings permanent?

When using windows update for Windows 10 the update will find updates but will not completely download or install. Version 1511 does not show up to download either. I have been on original version of Win 10 for several months.

I recently bought a HP Envy 17t with Windows 10 64 Bit on it. The first thing I did was to check if any updates were available, there were, and I downloaded and installed them. I checked again about 10 after that (about 2 weeks after getting the laptop). Since then however I can't install any upgrades. I start the download/install process, then leave. When I get back a couple of hours later, I see an error message saying that the MS servers could not be reached.
I don't know what's going on here. I haven't been able to download and install any Windows or MS Office upgrades in over 4 weeks.

I've run the troubleshooter, but still my nicely functioning Windows 10 has one kink -- daily updates download, but then during the required restart, the installation fails and the update is not operational. The restarts take forever, sometimes rolling through the restart process 3 times, before the failure message appears. Win 10 and the computer continue to function well, but without the daily updates, that won't last.

So, recently I left my computer on overnight to download something, I did this multiple times before with windows 7, and everything went smooth. This time I woke up and my computer was turned off, but I live alone, so nobody could have turned it off. I turned it on again to finish the download and went on doing something else. After that, my computer turned off again. I already went into the settings and sleep is not on, and the screen also doesn't turn off. I also went into advanced settings, and I still can't find anything to be causing it.

The Update Troubleshooter detects that I have these optional updates These updates are in the "optional updates" section on Windows 8.1/8/7
but then I have no way of updating them because the native Windows Update doesn't allow me to choose the updates that I want.
I have no way to select those updates in Windows Update because it only shows the Critical Updates.

Shortly after the "Get Windows 10" icon appeared in the system tray of my Win 8.1 installation, I made the mistake of clicking on the "Get Windows 10" icon and "reserved" my copy of Windows 10. After some research, I elected to cancel my reservation for Windows 10 and did so by again clicking the "Get Windows 10" icon and going through the process to "cancel" my reservation. (I subsequently read Brink's fine post on "Get Windows 10 Icon -Remove from Taskbar in Windows 7 and 8.1" and did option four to uninstall the KB3035583 update). Now when I go to windows update and "search for updates", the search result is "install windows 10" though it does allow me to view "all available updates" which includes numerous "important" security updates as well as a few "optional" updates, one of which is Windows 10. I select the "important" updates, deselect the optional updates (including windows 10), and click install then get a dialog that "Windows 10 setup files are being downloaded" and an option to "cancel" (which I do). How do I stop Windows Update from downloading Windows 10 setup files and just download the "important updates" to secure my present installation of Win 8.1?

This issue happened after I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 on my HP computer. We also have another older Dell computer, on which this issue did not occur after upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7. I followed advise from an IT technician provided about this issue with Windows 8.1 including editing the registry (Internet Settings and Default Connection Settings) and have no trouble accessing the internet. However, typically after every day or every other day (at most after three days) turning my computer on after being off overnight, the internet connection settings revert back from automatically detect settings to proxy server.
I do not use a proxy server and cannot access the internet when this occurs. This keeps happening even though I go back and reedit the register. What can be done to permanently fix this problem? I am currently using Internet Explorer 11 instead of Edge until Microsoft comes out with their update in early November that allows extensions. I use Norton 360 and cannot use this program with Edge until extensions are allowed, because of security on the internet.
Since this does not happen with the Dell computer, I checked the settings mentioned by the IT Technician and found that the following Internet Settings were not present in the registry: ProxyHttp.1 (or ProxyHttp1_1) and ProxyServer. Will it harm my HP computer if I delete these two from the registry so that the Internet Settings will be the same as those on the Dell computer, which as pointed out above does not have this problem? Also, for ProxyServer the IT technician indicated that there should be no value for this in the registry.

I recently upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7 and have been encountering problems since then. When I try to access any website using my mobile's hotspot all the browsers except firefox show the same message that is "Can’t connect to the proxy server".
So I went into proxy setting and saw that whole area was grayed out and at the top was a message saying "Some setting are managed by your organisation ". The first option in proxy settings is "Automatically detect setting" and it was turned on but because it was grayed out, I couldn't change it.Then I typed internet options in the search bar and clicked on it and a dialogue box appeared and in it I click connections tab and right at the bottom was a message saying "Some settings are managed by your system administrator.
I went into LAN settings and there too everything was grayed out and the automatically detect settings box was checked here too. This problem is not confined only to browsers but my in my Steam account I cannot update my games and also when I try to access news from the steam client it gives and error code.I did a bit of research about that code and found that it was related to proxy.Even my windows update is not working. Every time I try to update it it just stucks at 0% for hours.

I'm been looking for a place to download these icons but I couldn't find it.
These are the icons I mean:
I found a couple of sites that share a zip with some icons of Windows 10, but none of them has these particular icons. But where to get them or how to find them, or if there is a way to get them from a PC with Windows 10 installed.
I mean, shouldn't they be in a random folder inside the Windows directory? Or are they directly compiled inside the Settings Panel executable?

I've been struggling for a while with KB3093266 not installing, and now KB3097617 won't install either.
They download and do the install prompt, then restart. But upon restarting, it says the updates have failed and reappear in Windows Update. Tried the standard troubleshooter, and by resetting WU to no avail.

I cleaned installed Win10 Pro using the Media Creation Tool and how come I only got 3 updates? I am assuming I would get more updates than these.
Running version 1511 build 10586
Is it because Win10 is too new ???
And I kept pressing the Check for Updates button and it said no more new updates.

I got home from work this morning and cracked open this laptop to update it, and at about the same time I went to PC via RC and started the update as well. I let both download and went to take a nap, after waking up I checked laptop and it was still downloading at about 85%, then checked the PC and it had already updated, so went thru setup and looks fine.
I had some late lunch and watched the download going to browse web for a bit, came back and at 94%, closed up laptop had company, after they left reopen laptop and after a bit checked and still at 94%, that was two hours ago and still nothing, I even shut down and restart and doesn't move.

Can UAC be configured on Windows 10 on a per application basis? You can stop the message "Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your PC" from appearing for all applications but I would like to have the setting of UAC apply to a single app and leave all other apps alone. I know the publisher of the app in question and it is safe. There used to be a program called "Compatibility Administrator" which ran on Windows 7 but is not available on Windows 10.

I just upgraded my HP Envy dv7 series laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Pro. The download and installation of Windows 10 Pro went just fine. However when I attempted to check for hotfixespatches for Windows 10 after the initial install the process failed to download and install any of the identified updates. I let the process run for 12 hours and still nothing was downloaded and installed.
I have tried to stop the WUAUSERV & BITS services but get "the service is not responding to the control function" error for both services. I have also successfully downloaded the identified patches with a 3rd party tool but when I tried to install a single patch it hung and never installed and after about 10 hours I cancelled the process. I have shutdown the laptop and restarted it hoping I could then get the services to respond to the control function so I could delete the C:windowssoftwaredistribution directory and ideally get the patching process to work but even after the reboot when I tried to stop the WUAUSERV & BITS services I still get "the service is not responding to the control function" error.
I have also checked my NICs to make sure they were not set to metered, but so far I have not been able to get this process to work. I can get out to the Internet and download other updates just fine.
