I am wondering if Windows 10 will automatically create restore points before installing forced updates. If not, will we be notified about these updates before hand so we can make restore points manually? In previous editions of Windows, we were often offered optional or recommended updates. Will such updates be forced or not offered any more?

The fall update removes all restore points - cannot restore to prior to update.Also, it turns off protection settings in CP/System Protection/Configure. You will have to press button to turn on system protection and assign disk space for restore points. after Fall Update completes and create an initial restore point.
View 3 RepliesSome earlier automatic Windows 10 updates removed all my earlier restore points and set the protection settings of the C: disk off.
The recent Windows 10 update (Jan 29) again removed all my earlier restore points. This time the protection setting of my C: disk was still on, but the settings of the disk space usage was set so low by the update that there was space only for one restore point (the critical update).
i am scared enough about the automatic updates that i turn off the update service

The last automatic update I received was KB25533437 on August 15.

View 1 Replies1) I disabled Windows Update in Services to avoid having to deal with the updates. Later I put it on "manual" instead of "disabled". Today I find that my computer is "installing updates" WITHOUT a) my permission and b) without notifying me that there were updates to install. This thrashed my hard drive with near constant 100% usage from something called Windows Modules Installer Worker. I killed the process, rebooted after some Adobe Reader issue (unrelated....I think). Upon selecting "restart" Windows informs me that it is updating my system WITHOUT my permission. It continues, updates, says finished, restarts to 0%, finishes, reboots.
Upon restart--which takes FOREVER by the way without the "updating" message, when it used to only take a few seconds to boot up--I go to Services where I find Windows Update is set on "running". Even though I manually stopped it, and set it to "manual trigger" start....
2) After restart when I am in Services to kill Windows Update and set to manual--again--I see something called Update Agent, set to run automatically. I do not remember this service from before, and what it does different from Windows Update. I set it on manual as well.

Is there an application, freeware or paid, that works in creating restore points in Windows 10, so if an installed application messes things up, I can restore the saved point, so Windows 10 loads as if the application was never installed in the first place, and Windows registry etc is restored to as it was BEFORE the application was installed?

View 4 RepliesI have never had many restore points on my 2-in-1 Tablet, presumably to do with the small size of the SSD. But recently I have found the couple or so I normally have, disappear every day. I have been having to replace them every few hours. Why is this and what can I do about it?
It does not seem to be anything to do with the configuration in the Protection configuration menu --- it has not been changed, and there are several GBs of space allocated. Even so, is it to do with the fact that the free space on my C drive is low and frequently drops lower? OR what?
So far I only received a restore point for when I installed a LAN driver and when I make them manually. Why can't it create more like it used to?
View 4 RepliesI usually see the restore points created by windows but it isn't everyday backup, so I want to do a daily restore point backups, I went to Task Scheduler >> Windows>>System Restore, there is a task already there, I changed it to be daily at 4am, and It's enabled.
I check everyday in history and I see that the job is successfully done, but if I go to restore points I don't see any of those backups except the ones which Windows creates randomly or after installations.
Is there a downside to creating Restore Points (other than the disk space needed)?

The restore points and system image are on my back up drive , I restored a couple of files from it. and the folders are there but I do not want to screw things up, as I don't know what I am doing.
View 9 RepliesRecently I was notified that a driver installation failed. I went and checked it out, and it was a driver for HD 4600 graphics. My old system ran an i7-4790K, and when I upgraded to X99 I did not reimage my SSD.
Is there a way I can remove an update from Windows Update? The CPU I have has no iGPU, let alone HD 4600.
Today I had to do a reinstall to fix some things (it didn't fix them lol) so now I'm stuck. Windows 10 will not update. I get the error code 0x80240442 after a while. I'm not sure if its an issue with my drivers not being updated, but all of the web pages I have found that have this error code won't open. Not even the Microsoft pages, including hotmail.

My test computer (specs follow) is stuck at build 10586.11 I cannot install any cumulative upgrade, they all fail and Windows Update undoes any change to the system. In order to be able to install any other update I have to use the show/hide tool to hide the cumulative updates. My main computer (see my specs) and several of my friends have no problem upgrading up to 10586.36, but this particular one fails for some reason. I already tried to disable some devices in Device Manager and disable some services and startup applications, nothing worked.
Specs of my test computer that has the issue:

I have already hidden the Realtek AC'97 audio driver update which is known to cause BSOD, so this is not causing the issue.

View 3 RepliesI have set group policy to notify for update and notify for download, so when I manually check for updates, it shows any that are available, however when there are multiple updates available, there is no option to download/install an individual one, it just downloads / installs all of them?
Is there a way around this, as there is no point of the manual setting if it downloads /installs all of them at once anyway?

I checked my available updates this morning to find that Windows 10 has downloaded and wants to install the "latest" video driver for my Radeon 7700.
I have used AMD Auto Detect and it tells me I have the latest driver (15.7.1)
I have used the instructions on this web site to disable automatic driver updates.
what is this driver? I have read before that Microsoft sometimes tries to download and install drivers that have already been installed or are already up-to-date.
