Got caught by this sneaky Windows 10 downloading to my laptop. This download created a new partition on my harddrive as a protected system drive. I have tried to take ownership of this new partition with no success, I have tried to restore to a previous date with no success - it fails. How I can remove this partition from my hdd?

Since then I have been unable to boot to windows. HP screen comes on and I am able to access Bios and Boot menu but that's where it stops. HP diagnostic tool at start says everything passes. I wanted to try booting from disc. I have another machine but its running windows 10 32 bit. Any way of creating a 64 bit boot disc from my 32 bit machine.

I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 this past week. All is well except for one thing. I received an update from Microsoft yesterday (Cumulative Update for Win 10 - KB3081424) and noted during the installation that no restore point was created. System Protection is ON and I am able to create restore points manually. Thus, this is only a minor annoyance since I can successfully create these points on my own. However, I would prefer for the system to do so when important updates from Microsoft come down. I guess it is possible that the update referenced above did not generate such a point but found that unusual since it is listed as a Cumulative Update.

I have three-
100MB (created from Windows 7, which I knew was needed for booting)
C Partition (Windows instllation)
450MB (created after upgrade)
So, do I still need the 100MB? and what is this new 450MB used for? Disk Management says that is empty. I don't want to delete anything for risk of making my system unbootable.
I was just creating a folder on my C drive (SSD) when I noticed that the attribute is set to read-only. I've tried clearing the attribute many ways using the link below but to no avail. Right-clicking on the folder does not show the option to Take Ownership. how to correct it?

View 9 RepliesOK so I received the update on my clean install of win 10 on my split Intel NVME SSD. Just went to do a Macrium image backup and discovered that the update has created an extra partition on my drive. Although small it is stealing space from my second partition that I save the backups to. I also have some extra files on C: as shown.
To regain space what files can I delete? Can I restore the extra partition without damaging windows. Do I need to include the extra small partition with C: for a Macrium backup to be able to restore if anything gets screwed? I was expecting the update to just update the C:/ drive.
All my emails, saved, unread and all the folders i created in my mail are gone....
View 1 RepliesI clean installed Win 10 RTM version on my laptop a few weeks ago. I have a basic GPT setup.
Installation went fine, however the installer created a 'Recovery' drive (D with a size of 600 MB (262 MB free) & a 'Local Disk' drive (E with a size of 451 MB (128 MB free).
I am stumped as to why it assigned letters to them. If you see the attachment of a snapshot of Partition Wizard, you will be able to see the setup.
My question, besides why the assigned letters is the where the status is listed as 'None'. Is it safe to delete these?? I am assuming that the only partitions i need to keep are the 'ESP', which is 'Active & Boot' - so it is needed to be able to boot into Windows. How about the one listed as 'Other' - the capacity is 128 MB & all 128 MB are used - do i save this one as well?
I really wanted a less cluttered setup - so when all these partitions were created, particularly 'D' & 'E', i was perplexed as to why they were created.
I have two physical disks in my notebook, one simple partition each, BitLocker encrypted. Drive C:, which is my system drive and drive D:, for some media stuff.Windows Version is Windows 10.0.10586 x64.I have configured VSS to use the "Previous Versions" feature in case I accidentally delete or overwrite a file. I did this on my Win7 install to and it saved my butt at least three times.
VSS is running (Volume Shadow Copy Service set to "Manual"), snapshots are there but when I right-click on a modified file (or on the root of the disk) and click "Previous Versions", my D: drive correctly displays the existing snapshots, on my system drive C: there is always a "There are no previous versions available" message. But, when I click the "System Restore..." button, I get a list with my snapshots, so I guess I could restore my system.
configuration seems to be ok and the two manual snapshots are there on both drives. For the moment there is no system restore point, but it does not work with snaps created by them either.

Problem: When I click on my H: drive or try to access it from the command line, it gives me an access denied error. However, all of the applications that I have installed on that drive run without issue. So, there is some access there. (See attached images. The first shows the hard drive state in diskmanager and in windows explorer. The second image shows the minecrafter launcher profile (that it is stored in H: and the application running, proving that there is some access.
System: Home built PC: (C:) 240GB SSD for OS, (E:) 1TB HDD for file storage and backup, (H:) 1TB HDD for large applications and video editing files. All drives are Simple, Basic, and none have encryption. All use the SATA connectors.
Process: I had Windows 7 Home 64 bit with, among many other things, Comodo Internet Security, Virtualbox, ImageDisk.
During the upgrade process, I noticed that Windows 10, during the upgrade, ran the file system check and fix "problems" on the H: drive.
(Side note) Having forgotten to uninstall Comodo before the upgrade, I did not have network after the upgrade. The fix was non-trivial as I had to use a second computer to download the unofficial comodo uninstaller. Reboot. Uninstall the network devices. Reboot. And once Windows 10 was up and running, it reinstalled the network devices and the network was available.
Still, whether before or after the Comodo uninstall and reinstall, the uninstall of ImageDisk, or the uninstall of the Virtualbox network device, I have no access to the H: drive.
I just want to know what software is available that lets you password protect any program you want. Something that is not a password manager.

I have used windows+R to get to netplwiz.exe and when that didn't work, I went on to regedit and followed the directions at [URL]..... It worked initially but now I'm back to having to use a password after the computer was put in sleep mode. Why does it keep reverting?

Restart Win 10."
Did that. On restart, I didn't need a password. Naturally, I thought the problem was solved. Nope. When the computer goes to sleep, I need to enter a password to re-open it; when it is turned off or restarted, I don't need a password.
Last night I wiped out my ASUS T100 tablet to clean install TH2. But there is a 7GB Recovery partition from Windows 8.1 that I can't get rid off using Diskpart.

View 3 RepliesI have a Windows 10 PC, with one of it's functions being that of a file server/NAS for my home network. I set it up with password protected sharing and a user account/password that everyone knows and uses to access it. I didn't really have any reason to use password protected sharing at the time, but it was the default so I left it.
Now I have a couple of network streaming devices that can't handle password protected sharing, so I was considering turning it off. Is there any reason not to turn off password protected sharing on a private network? Obviously I don't mind everyone on the network having access, but I was wondering if it had any other potential security benefits that I haven't thought of.
I need to run chkdsk on a laptop's system drive and am aware that this isn't possible without a re-boot. Problem is, the laptop I'm wanting to run it on has some BDOD issues (driver_irql_not_less_or_equal symnets.sys) and I can only boot into safe mode. Will this affect chkdsk running?
View 1 RepliesI have a fat32 100mb system partition in my windows disk management it's also showing in aomei partition assistant file system fat32, capacity 100mb, used space 28.75 mb free space 71.25 mb flag is gpt,efi status is system. Installed windows 10 from a usb flash drive and I could not convert from efi to gpt or something like that so I deleted the windows partition which is my c drive (ssd) and that's when I got this showing up in windows.
Can I copy the boot files to the c drive and just deleted this system partition and use the partition software to merge the space back to the c drive so I can use it. Or do I have to reformat and start all over again? I deleted the c drive partition that windows was on and created a new one and it created reserved space and recovery space which I have got ride of and deleted and merged the unallocated space for both back to the c drive.
I hesitate about doing anything with this partition until I'm sure of what I'm doing so that My computer will still boot up. I can only boot into windows 10 from the windows boot manager and not straight from the cdrive the primary (SSD).
A file named customrefresh.wim remains on my C: drive. 9 Gb big. I believe it is a leftover from windows 8.1. I suspect the folder was created by windows 8.1 in connection with creating a USB recovery drive for the 8.1 system. I should have erased it then, but forgot. Can I do it now?
View 5 RepliesI can't delete any folders from my system drive C: Keep getting error code "1 interrupted action" Invalid MS-DOS function. I have gone in and checked all my security settings and I have full permissions for everything. I get this error code no matter which folder I try to delete. It's as all files are locked. Can't even drag and drop to the desktop to try removing them that way.
