Vertical Taskbar Takes Up 1 / 3 Screen Width
Jul 31, 2015
Horizontal task bar works just fine but vertical task bar on left side (same problem on right side) is very wide with a small column of task icons in the center. Basically unusable when a vertical task bar is configured. I've tried with and without Classic Start Menu and it does the same thing.

Since upgrading to Windows 10 from 7, I ran into the same issue as [URL] ....
So I tried the catalyst scaling option for my desktop and this seemed to fix the issue for mostly everything, desktop and most games, However, the problem still seems to arise with some games I try to play, such as Xcom Enemy Within or Dawn of War 2. Changing resolution in these games doesn't appear to have any effect, the image is still falling off the screen, I use my desktop on a 32 inch TV as opposed to a monitor via HDMI, and keep it set to 1600x900 as opposed to its native 1920x10180, but even leaving it at 1920 has the same effect.
I have my specs on a dxdiag file, dunno where to upload it here, but I'm using a AMD Radeon R9 200 Series on an Asus I built.

I just bought this new ASUS K550J laptop and came with Windows 8.1 with it but I wanted to install Windows 10, fresh install. I did the usual things needed for installation and it was ok but it takes too long to boot up. Here is a video of what am I speaking. It's UEFI and I think it's the Windows Boot Manager, how can I reset it?
Code:
Windows Boot Manager--------------------identifier {bootmgr}device
partition=DeviceHarddiskVolume2path
EFIMicrosoftBootbootmgfw.efidescription
Windows Boot Managerlocale

When it goes to sleep or hibernate mode, it takes more than a minute to wake up and show the lock screen. Probably a driver issue...

Immediately after upgrading my Insider's copy of Windows 10 to build 14271 I noticed a vertical white bar in the notification area. it has a little arrow pointing to the right. If I rest my pointer on the bar, no tooltip appears. If I click on the bar, it moves to the left and now the little arrow inside points to the left.

I have a new Christmas Windows 10 Laptop and it goes to vertical gray lines with a 1" colored block on the screen with the gray lines. I can not get my screen back unless I do a hard power shut down. I did all the current Windows updates on laptop. I then put the full version of AVG on the laptop. It continues to go to the vertical gray lines after a short time of use. I am plugged in to 110 AC and haven't use the battery setting as yet.

I have Window 10 Preview installed on two PCs, my SP3 and my desktop box (an Alienware system). I have two Microsoft accounts (home and work), and both accounts have logins on both PCs. With one login, my work account on my desktop PC, the start menu column width is 6, meaning I can have 6 small icons per row (or 3 medium icons, or 1 medium and 1 wide). The other three logins all have a start menu column width of 8 (or 4 medium icons, or 2 wide). I greatly prefer the 8.
I find it extra odd that if I log in to my SP3 with my work account I have a start menu with a width of 8 but if I log on to my desktop with that same account I have a width of 6. This is even with all of the sync settings turned on (doesn't seem like they are syncing all the much stuff yet). Maybe there's a registry setting for it somewhere, and the desktop account was created after the point when the default changed from 8 to 6.

Have Windows 10 Pro 1511 10586.17 installed but want to make the windows borders bit wider as I do not like the ultra narrow ones.
I have changed borderwidth setting in registry and have also done so with the paddedborderwidth setting but regardless of what I do to that setting, after reboot the border stays the same.

Is it possible to always display the vertical scroll bar for Apps on the Start menu (or for everything in Windows 10 with a page overflow)? I am setting up a laptop for person with disabilities and want to make it obvious that there's more to view by scrolling.

I have read everywhere on how to change the start menu width, however what I am asking for does not seem to be covered anywhere. When I open the "All Apps" section of the start menu to get to my installed programs I am unable to distinguish between some of them due to their width. (See attached screenshot)
What I want is to extend the width of the list of apps, NOT the width of the live tiles area. Seems everywhere covers how to change the width of the start menu but it only affects the live tiles area, not the app list.
I have searched through the registry and can't find anything there. Maybe I missed something?

I'm loving Win10 so far! Real improvement on Win7 (and most certainly on Win8, which I hated so much I went back!)
One thing I have noticed, that I can't seem to change... is how you set it so that icons in the start bar, go full sized once you open them? I liked that feature in Win7, as it was quicker to view what was open (without having to "read" the icons to work out what was what)
(I've attached a pic of what I mean)

My machine has stopped booting into Windows 10 and a strange white vertical stripe has appeared my monitor. The machine startup, refuses to load then just keeps rebooting until the various recovery options appear.
Have tried a reset but nothing appears to fix it. Now it just keeps rebooting without any of the recovery options.

Is there a way to have the search box show on the taskbar when the taskbar has been relocated to the top of the screen? All I can seem to figure out is how to have an icon for search instead of the box actually in the taskbar.

I have a strange anomaly with my HP Pavilion dv7-1245dx Entertainment Notebook that had Windows 8.1installed. When I started bootup, it got so far and froze up. I had to do a hard shutdown. On the second try, the laptop starts, but takes an inordinately long time to get to the lock screen.
I thought that when I installed my 240 GB SSD drive and installed Windows 10 that the anomaly would be gone, but it's still happening.
If I shut down, I have to go through the two bootup tries again.

HP desktop I just put new hard drive in and installed Windows 10. The Windows 7 hard drive was failing, had no backup or image. Tried to access drive with USB but drive too far gone.
Decided to install Windows 10 as an upgrade. After a few minor glitches like no activation, was finally able to install and activate.
Used USB Build 10586, 1511 and was able to activate using the Key on the COA sticker. (Alphanumerical). PC now will take up to 20 minutes before boot.
The black screen, blue Windows flag and spinning dots just sits there. All of a sudden, it continues to boot. I don't have any programs, apps, starting.
In fact, it just booted now to the User name, passed, and now is at Desktop. Had been starting for about 20 minutes as I'm posting this. In the Task Manager, Startup, I don't have anything enabled.

When you do WindowsPowerShutdown,Monitor goes blank immediately, showing no more programs running. However the computer remains on for quite a long time (guess 2~3 mins), before it finally turns off - fan shuts down and everything seems to shut down at that point.

So, I've encountered this issue lately where Windows 10 takes considerably longer to boot than before. (Usually 4 to 5 minutes) It used to boot under 30 seconds before so I don't know what went wrong here.
So, the screen with the Windows logo and loading circle disappears quickly but then it hangs after when a black screen appears with nothing but the mouse cursor(Which can be moved around.) This is the infact main problem, the black screen remains for quite a time before the user screen appears then the desktop. What can cause this problem? Can it be an update, as I never had this issue before neither with Windows 8?

Recently i've updated my Windows 10 Pro x64 with that big November update without any issues except that now searching through registry takes literally forever because it never ends. It still finds entries but eventually it would just get stuck on searching and if i try to cancel it - regedit crashes.
This seems to happen somewhere during the search through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entries because i can search fine up to HKLM and past it but not inside it.
I've been wondering what could be causing this?
I've also tried exporting HKLM entries and found out that it's about 230 mb which seems a lot for a registry.
