View Settings Not Saved For Special Folders (Desktop / Download)
Aug 24, 2015
I've made the switch to Windows 10 for about a week or so now. So far almost everything is working just as I wanted, except some sorting annoyances with File Explorer.
For unknown reasons, file sort settings for special folders like Desktop, Documents, Download are not saved. I always sort my files/folders by date (Descending: New above, old below) so that I can access to files that I use the most or recent downloaded file. The sort setting seem to work with all folders except the mentioned above. Moreover, the sorting for these folders seem to be random (not 100% sure). For instance, my Desktop would sort files and folders by Name, while my Download folder sorts file by Date (but ascending!).
In all.. those special folders are a mess! I have to move forward and backward non-stop between them as I work but their settings just keep resetting!
I should probably move my working folders to some other location and forget about it. But doing that mean I have to make changes for all my PCs so I'd like to explore a fix before making those changes.
2 out of the 3 computers at work I have installed Windows 10 Pro on, have an issue of when I reboot the computer, the desktop icons, that were arranged in a certain way, have now all moved to the very left of the desktop. I am running Classic Shell on the machines and so get a desktop view immediately when booting. It's annoying. Windows 8.1 does not do this.
My work computer has both XP and Windows 10 PRO on it as a dual boot. It had a Windows 10 preview edition on it since back in April or May. Then when we decided to move into Windows 10, I merely bought a DVD of Win 10 Pro and when running in that preview OS on the one partition I installed the DVD and did and upgrade. Works fine, but every once in a while I see the explorer view of folders and when I close the folder {X} it magically appears again and click the X again to close it.
For the time I installed a program called DesktopOK ver 4.16 on the one computer and seems to be holding it's own so far (no moving icons back over to the extreme left.
In NVIDIA Control Panel, when I select my settings and click apply every things is OK. The next time I reboot they change. Why are they not being saved?
My brother upgraded to win 10 then had great problems with drivers which I am trying to sort out for him but at the moment he has rolled back to win 7. The only problem he has now is that he can't download pictures from his camera either by connecting via usb cable or putting the sd card in a slot on his laptop. We can view them but not copy, paste or download them to the computer. we have re-installed the programme that came with the camera which always worked fine with Win 7 before. All we are getting every time we try to transfer the images no matter what method we use is a pop up saying you do not have permission to do this action. he is logged in as an administrator. I have tried logging in as a user, logging as a different adminstrator but am now running out of options ....
How to fix my icon problem. I have icons for certain files - word and excel, that I arrange in convenient places on the desktop. If I edit these then save them, Windows moves them to different places on the desktop. This never used to happen on Windows 7 ...
In windows 8 when I opened lets say documents or pictures and I had pictures in there it showed the picture instead of a image like the attached one. How do I get back to being able to see the image? I cant find the setting...
Running clean install Windows 10 pro, I did add a reg fix to enable photo viewer, which worked fine.
I have a many picture folders, which I was able to view all fine. Suddenly only on a few folders (approx 3 from 40) I started getting "windows photo viewer can't open this picture because either photo viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to photo viewer, error. I tried to view the same jpg's using Win10 photo and get the error "it appears we don't support this file format"... One folder has a BMP image which also won't open with any app, including paint.
Went to my backup copies, same issue. I can eliminate any malware or virus issue as I regularly scan my PC. I'm concerned because I could view these jpg's previously, I am thinking some sort of registry issue. I copied folder to USB and tried to open on another Win10 PC, with the same result. I then tried to open the jpg's on a Win 7 machine, same result. Have moved file from folder still won't open, check attributes of folder/files, I have full rights.
Now I'm concerned that the 40 or so "precious" files have become corrupt which would include my backup copies. The fact I've tried to access these files on three devices without success.
One Win10 device has the following event log entry;
"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Photos_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."
Copying un-effective JPEGS into the effective folders open, copying singles files from other folders to affective folder won't open.
I tried to upload a file that won't open, it returns the message photo1.jpg this is not a valid image file.
At a loss as I can't open these files on three devices...
Recently my PC just started to have some weird problem. Everytime after I restarted my PC or just restarted explorer.exe, my desktop icon reset from small size to medium and sorting order also reset. Besides I also noticed that in every folder view settings also reset.
The reason why I suspected it caused by one of the updates because I just formatted my PC. Everything was normal in the beginning but after I updated the windows. The exact problem came back.
So I just turned my computer on and noticed that my desktop had been reset to the default wallpaper and all of my folders had been deleted. I also realised that my documents and pictures had been deleted. I tried to run a game and my save files had been deleted.
I restarted my computer and everything was normal.
Is this an issue computer or just Windows 10 in general?
My computer has a mind of its own apparently. I can no longer view my regular desktop. All I get is the full start screen with all the stupid tiles on it. I have tried changing my settings, restarting, shutting down and rebooting, nothing is working. When I click the windows logo all I get is that same full start screen. Am I missing something? All I want is for it to show me my regular, normal desktop. Not these tiles!
So whenever I close all my tabs I have the windows 10 start menu with all the tiles show up, but I want to see my desktop. It switches between them like every week and I have it set to not show in personalization. What to do?
I'm been looking for a place to download these icons but I couldn't find it.
These are the icons I mean:
I found a couple of sites that share a zip with some icons of Windows 10, but none of them has these particular icons. But where to get them or how to find them, or if there is a way to get them from a PC with Windows 10 installed.
I mean, shouldn't they be in a random folder inside the Windows directory? Or are they directly compiled inside the Settings Panel executable?
I just switched to the new mail app mostly because i want calendar, contacts and email shared across multiple computers and devices. Calendar and contacts seems to be shared fine but I have a cableone.net email and a gmail account. My new mail downloads fine but older mail and none of my folders in outside accounts show up. I have played with the sync settings...started at one week and moved out from there but old mail and folders do not download.
I have my settings configured to automatically download and install Windows updates, yet every single day I have to manually check for updates and there are always updates found, which then proceed to be installed. Why is this? By very definition, shouldn't "automatic updates" mean that nothing should be found when manually checking for them? Yet this is a daily occurrence.
I recently did a clean install on Windows 10. I've updated my drivers, downloaded some games, even made some system restore points. I installed Steam & it killed my internet, making connections to the Internet, Dropbox, sporadic though my RPD client seemed unphased..I think it has to do with Steams UDP request overwhelming my Comcast modem.
Anyways, so I did a system restore prior to installing steam and fixed the problems, I have great internet again. The problem I am now having is that I check my downloads folder on Windows 10 and my previous downloads are not there, so I redownload them. Now I have all these new downloads showing up as programinstaller.exe (1), as if there's already a file with the exact same name in that folder. Sure enough I was going to reinstall steam, the installer was not visible, but doing a folder search it shows up.
how I can see all of the files in my folders, it's going to drive me bonkers having files that I can't see. I have hidden files checked to be shown.
I'm unable to type all special characters that require the Alt key to be pressed. €, ², ³, μ, and most importantly, @, are no longer possible with a German keyboard layout. I tried German German and Austrian German, and both failed to produce those signs. Normally, the @ sign is produced by pressing Alt+q, but since upgrading to Windows 10, nothing happens when I press Alt+q (or any other combination of Alt+letter).
Only German keyboard layouts seem to be affected, as I'm able to use Alt+letter combinations in other languages; just not in German.
All my desktop icons are stuck on the left side of the desktopAll file explorer view are stuck in details view. Now yes, I have turned off Auto-arrange, still refreshes to all icons on left. I have tired ALL sorts combinations of view + sort by... nothing. I have tired many anti-malware/virus scans and nothing has come up. I have tired CCleaner pretty much everything and the problem persists.
Of note, I had done a system restore a week and half ago to a specific point and that fixed the problem but for just a day, then it happened again. When I got around to having time to go for another system restore, that restore point was gone and now no other restore point is fixing the issue -_-That left me to think it might be something I installed or perhaps a windows update... but after having uninstalled pretty much everything I could that I installed in the last week as well as removing recent updates.... nothing. I have also tried making a new windows account (local)... nothing. Also tried in safe mode, still nothing.
Okay I just upgraded to Windows 10 this morning and I had all of my downloaded files from other websites all in the desktop under a folder called software after the upgrade it opened up Windows 10 and ran me through the tutorial, and had me reboot after I change some settings. when it rebooted it took about 20 minutes said something about some new features and "we want to show you new features" and others some other junk.
Finally when I did pull the explorer back up the only thing that was there was the recycle bin, my computer, and the downloads folder which was empty I went through every inch of my hard drive I even went over it with undelete Pro and still no traces of my files they were archive files and setup files for software. when I finally did find a trace of one of my old folders, the only thing that would it would tell me was that it was unavailable and that it must've been moved or deleted I took a picture of the error message and can't find answers anywhere..
I am running win 10 and I have lost being able to add a folder to my desktop to hold items I want to save. Like I backup my acc'tng. 2 to 3 times a week and save in a folder but now I can't create these folders. I was able to go to open space on desktop and right click and a list would come up and there was new folder add and I would click and it would at this folder then I could name it now I can't. When I go there now the list I get is View, sort by, refresh, display settings and personalize. How to add a desktop folder?
This seems to be a known issue across many Windows platforms: Vista, 7, 8, ... now in Ten.
I am not running Norton or any other malware antivirus (no threats from recent scan) other then Windows Defender. Been good so far all through WIN7 and 8.1.
The Greyed Xs (see attachment) showed up sometime after I updated to WIN10.
Files in X'd folders are accessible and none of the folders are shortcuts to other locations.
All X'd folders are on my desktop. Desktop is used for active folders, projects more or less.
I use a networked WD My Cloud Mirror (MCM) for all my files (docs, music and videos), as well as backup. (Also use Genie Timeline 14 for backup of the WD MCM, connected to MCM va USB 3.0, just in case!) No X's on these folders.
How can I revert desktop folders to their normal look, that is without greyed X's?
I have been using Windows 10 for some time now. I just lost everything on my desktop. I had numerous folders, pictures, pdfs and some music. I can still get to it by going to file manager etc. But the folders and icons do not appear on the desktop. Only those boxes with calendar email, etc,
I probably clicked something to turn it off, but I can find anywhere to turn them back on.
I just clicked the Yes to do the automatic upgrade from Windows. The system said all of my files and folders would still be here when it was done. ALL OF MY DESKTOP FOLDERS ARE GONE... This had all of my family photos in them that I had just finished preparing in my Photoshop Program that is also No Longer on the computer.
