View 2 RepliesI was wondering if going from Windows 8.1 to 10 Will erase all of my data?
View 1 RepliesMy system install of build 10162 won't activate, as they pulled the validation from these builds. Unfortunately, I can't upgrade to 10240, which can, I was told by Windows support, be activated. This is because Windows isn't already activated!!! (Windows Update won't download it (it always stays at 0% )).
To solve this, I want to upgrade manually and thus I flashed the ISO on a blank USB stick. Can I keep all my data and app settings, etc. if I upgrade using the ISO on the stick? Or, in other words, is it possible to "upgrade" when installing an ISO, or do I have to do a clean install?
If I upgrade to windows 10 from windows 7 the data and photos, videos will deleted?
View 2 RepliesIf I decide to do a clean install of Windows 10, can I just disconnect my Data HDD from SATA/Power during the process? This would be really ideal since I only have docs/installers/music/videos/photos and could even backup my current steam library. I don't have an external drive to back up anything with, and I don't see why it'd be needed here.
I feel like the internal drive is acting similar to how an external drive acts anyway
IS hiding your Desktop app icons from Windows 7 along with pictures a hidden feature in 10? I have installed Windows 10 Pro thru my upgrade and all of my Desktop app icons and pictures/videos were all hidden. I just went into folder options and unhid everything. Wasn't sure if this was normal behavior after an upgrade?
View 1 RepliesI purchased a laptop a while ago and it came with windows 10 home. I'd like to upgrade to Windows 10 pro, but instead of paying for an upgrade in the windows store I'd rather use the unused copy of windows 7 ultimate that i already own since you get w10 pro when upgrading from w7 ultimate. All my data is on the C drive so how would I go about backing it up so I can restore it on the new OS? Also would I lose all the drivers and programs for the laptops features such as the webcam, keyboard backlight, etc?
View 5 RepliesOn Window 8.1. Boosted the install which a lot of people are doing by clearing SoftwareDistribution/Download and running the cmd prompt.
Downloaded the Windows 10 update, as soon as the Preparing to Install dialogue was done, the computer restart, trying to install a normal Windows 8.1 update instead.
Once I am booted up again, I get this error [URL] .... and try the fix.
Once I try and redownload the update again, it skips to 100%, then fails the update with the error 80070643 being reported.
So I managed to break my partition table, but I was able to recover my entire C: drive and copy every file and folder to an external drive. My question now becomes, is there anyway to, when I reinstall Windows, to restore from that backup (since it's just a data backup of files and folders, not a system image)? Would booting into linux (so that partition isn't in use by Windows) and simply copy-past-overwriting the old files effectively give me my system back?
View 3 RepliesI'm having an intermittent occurrence of Microsoft Windows Error Reporting application popping up after loading Windows 10, with a message that says "Windows Data Protect has stopped working."
This message hangs for a minute or two, then goes away. I cannot tell if the problem is being fixed automatically, or if it is just going away.
What is Windows Data Protect, and why does it keep crashing?
If I update Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 is there any chance to loss my data like word file, songs, video etc
View 1 RepliesMany users of new "windows 10 Technical Preview for Phones" are unable to turn off mobile data..... So here is the simple solution:
1] go to setting>Extras>access point
2] create a new access point ( insert anything in fields
3] Set it as active
whenever you want to turn on data go to access point n choose working (default) access point ...
I have a retail copy of windows 8 on my desktop which I recently upgraded to win 10, I was wondering if I can use that windows 8 key again to install windows on a laptop since it is no longer on my desktop?
View 1 RepliesHave installed Windows 10 on two desktops, so decided to download and install on laptop. Laptop is currently on and shows 67% on Configure settings and 91% overall. There is no light flickering except a slight flicker about every 20-30 seconds showing action on hard drive and it has been at 91% for over an hour.
View 4 RepliesI just updated Windows8 to Windows10 and my dvd/cd device is not detected anymore. When I go in the BIOS I see the device, but in windows explorer, I don't see the dvd device at all.
View 10 RepliesI'm currently running a PC on Windows 8.1. Of the course of it's use, I've had numerous problems with installing drivers and other software and have tried multiple times to clean install the OS from the disk. I've gotten to the point where I can't install most software I download for some reason and I can't get Windows update. Any type of sfc, dism /RestoreHealth, or other commands of the like always return unfixable errors. Would my problems be fixed by choosing the "clean install" option on the upgrade or would lingering system files cause me trouble down the road? If the latter is true, is there a way to use my upgrade on a new SSD I plan to buy?
View 1 RepliesIts been more than a month that i have updated my Pc to windows 10, and i actually dont like it at all so i need to find a way to go back to windows 8.1 without losing data like Steam games and pictures and more.
View 8 RepliesI have tried to install the latest version of a program that I had installed in Windows 7 but the installation process said that a previous version was still present. The install app offered to uninstall the old version but for some reason did not install the new version. When I tried to install once more I got the same message. I have attached a snip-it picture of the message.
View 3 RepliesSo I'm upgrading from windows 8.1 to 10 on my HP laptop. And I'm on the "upgrading windows" screen but its now stuck on 92% and has been like that for 1 hour or more. How to fix this?
View 1 RepliesI had music files on my laptop which was running windows 7, but when I upgraded to windows 10 I can no longer find them and the available space is not now large enough to put the music back from an external drive, which leads me to think that these files are still somewhere on my hard drive.
View 6 RepliesI have fear that my files may get dissappear if i upgrade to windows 10 from windows 7. Is it so?
View 1 RepliesI ran the upgrade and now have a Windows.old folder taking up 31GBs. If you are not planning on rolling back to 8.1, you can remove this folder following these steps: Windows.old Folder - Delete in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
View 1 RepliesI plan on upgrading my MB and CPU from amd to intel but keeping my harddrive. I don't have a install disc or anything but I do have my windows 10 product key. How would I go about doing this?
View 1 RepliesAfter upgrading from windows 8.1 to 10, my monitor stopped working, showing a "no signal" error then popping to black screen. The computer works I can hear it running when I power on, but the monitor shows nothing.
I tried to remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes (something I read from another thread), but didn't work.

As the title states I have an SSD and HDD setup, now I have set the Windows Documents, Pictures and Music folders ect and the app data on the HDD as you would.
And some programs are on the SSD and others on the HHD.
Will upgrading to windows 10 mess with this or will it just upgrade without putting random bits of it on my HDD.
I have recently purchased a new laptop, one that houses a rather small SSD. As well, it comes with Win 8.1 and I am quite eager to migrate to Win 10 as soon as I can (or at least as soon as the first Service Pack is released). A new SSD has been purchased and is intended to be installed right away.
From what I gather on the forums, would the following be the best way to upgrade to Win 10 on my new SSD?:
1. Launch the brand new laptop and immediately begin cloning the old SSD onto the new SSD using Win 8.1.
2. Install the new SSD, which now has Win 8.1.
3. Upgrade to Win 10 with the new SSD.
I'll then go about doing a clean install.
