View 4 RepliesMy friend has been using AutoCAD on fairly new Windows 10 install. No problems till today when he got an error stating he needed to reinstall the OS. I didn't see the error before he shut down. To be safe he pulled his hard drive and asked me to backup his personal files using a USB enclosure, before reinstalling OS.No problem right? I've done this for other people many times in older OSs, but this is the first time I've seen Windows 10 file structure. I plugged in the drive and found that I can't access files in the OS partition. I can't crack it. Basically, it can't get the rights to see files there. I actually plugged the enclosure into an old XP computer I had laying around and was able to see some folders and files, but no personal files. where his files are located on the drive and how I can access them?
View 3 RepliesMy HP pavilion dv6000 is running windows 10 currently the 1511 version. Pc is passworded and associated with Microsoft account. Somehow it developed fault that resulted to spark on the board resulting to system unable to power on. I have a new system but I need to transfer my files from the old laptop's hard drive so I used the socket that connects internal hard drive to another laptop as external hard drive via USB. it FAILED to install the hardware. It installs as unknown in device manager. I have tried on other sockets and PCs still noticed the same thing. Hard drive is healthy..
I am almost certain this has to do with windows 10 attempts to prevent me from losing my files to theft perhaps my hard drive was stolen, something that is obtainable in earlier versions of windows. However, that's just my guess.
Meanwhile I have NOT tried connecting the hard drive via IDE socket to try booting windows 10 on another laptop BUT I tried booting it as OS on external hard drive & it is not read by the laptop
How to access the hard drive and get my files as the spoiled laptop shows no sign of coming up soon.
I'm running home edition in both and trying to export contacts from old vista laptop to flash drive, then import to 'people' on win 10 laptop . Do I do it as csv -common separated values ...or vCards (folder of .vcf files)
View 9 RepliesThe old one is perfectly serviceable, but slow (i3-2365M, 1TB hdd, 8Gb mem, on-chip graphics ). The new one is a i7-6700HQ, 512Gb sdd, 1TBhdd, 16Gb mem, NVIDIAGeForce GTX 960M . Both laptops have Windows 10 OS. How can I transfer my files, data, settings and programs to the new laptop?
View 9 RepliesWhat is the MapData folder which has recently appeared on my D drive? (This is the drive containing all my user folders with the exception of Pictures.) It contains subfolders diskcache, mapscache and files overrides.json, updater.nma
View 2 RepliesThere was a folder titled Windows.000 that was created after my previous upgrade to windows 10. This folder had all of my data on it and now it has completely disappeared. It feels like somebody has physically come into my home and gutted my hard drive. My C: properties say 1.9GB Free out of 2... WTF??
View 3 Repliesthere's no data reset for my data usage in windows 10 like I had in 8.1 did someone at microsoft believe that no one cares how much data we use now.
View 3 RepliesI upgraded to Windows and to my horror after it was Downloaded all my data disappear. Been working on a family book all previous version that I referred to gone. All my photos gone.
My only consolation I had backed up a version of my book on a sub key. Photos though gone. People do not upgrade. How could they play with people like that.
Wondering how Windows 10 deals with putting data on a separate partition or drive. Does it use the same general method as in Windows 7, where it re-maps (for example) "Documents" to a folder on a different letter drive path? So that C:Users{user}Documents becomes G:Users{user}Documents?
I'm hoping that it actually becomes more like *nix, using symbolic links to point to the right place (so C:Users{user}Documents points to the separate partition of drive). Personally, I find the Win7 method to be clunky and problematic in actual use.
One of my WD Green 2tb drives has become raw and can't be used. Windows will not complete a format of it. Shows up in my computer. Is there any way of saving this drive?
View 6 RepliesI am currently trying to convert my mSATA SSD from MBR to GPT. I have downloaded EaseUS partition master and can see that I can convert the disk using the software. My question is however if this is possible to do with my mSATA drive that my PC boots from and has Windows 10 installed or does it have to be a drive that is not booted from. I know there are lots of threads on this however none specify of this is possible using the drive you are booted from.
View 1 RepliesSo when I decided to build this pc, i wanted it to have Win7. When i booted it up, i kept getting the message asking if i wanted to upgrade to Win10. so i thought "hey, i paid 50 dollars for win7, so why don't i upgrade to win10 for free instead of paying 100 dollars," so i did. and all of my downloads and files, everything, saved so i didn't have to download everything again. but turns out i don't like win10. so if i go back to win7, will everything stay on my hard drive?
View 1 RepliesI just bought a new computer and it comes with Win 10. I need to plug in my old hard drive with all my installed programs and data (Win 7) and moved them to that new drive (Win 10). Is there a software that you would recommend for this and what should be done? Clone or image? I am lost in terminology!
View 1 RepliesI have bsods and game crashes of steam. I putted a new ram because the previous ram kit died (faulty rams causing bsods)and also I have a new graphic card r9 280 (because the previous gtx480 died too). What can I do? Bumps are not specific. I believed that sound driver causing problems and I disabled sound controller from bios and uninstalled the drivers. Unfortunately bsods don't stop. I have checked for drivers , updates, memtest but nothing. I noted that bsods and crashes happen in the first boot. If I have a bsod or I reboot after a game crash then BSODS and crashes stop to happen.

View 3 RepliesI had files saved in the 'guest' profile on the old OS, and since Windows 10, the guest account seems to have dissappeared? There are photos saved on the old guest profile that I would like to access.
Surely, Windows would have asked about deleting files?
My hard drive shows 20 more GB of space but everything is gone that I used or saved on the computer. I did not back up everything since the info I read said I would not loose this information.
Is there any way to retrieve it or roll back the hard drive to Windows 7 and retrieve the data I lost?
I've upgraded from win 8.1 to 10. after upgrade all my files were in local disk user and in the folders but were not in library folders e.g pics were in local disk user pictures but not in file explorer pictures. so i moved every thing to the folders and after restarting my laptop everything was gone... what can i do to recover my data.
View 1 RepliesI got this PC yesterday and have noticed that there is a random empty drive in This PC. It says "762 GB free of 763 GB."
Does this come with every OS and what is it used for?
Is there a way i can do this without wiping the drive and loosing all my data my back up drive is on back order and i need to take my system to uefi.
View 1 RepliesI use a 2 drive set up, a small solid state for my operating system and whatever game I'm currently into, and a 2TB storage drive.
My storage drive (D:) bombed and I took it in for data recovery. The tech saved about 1.3TB of 1.6 used. He put the image onto my new drive and got it going again. However when I try to access explorer or anything pertaining to D: it hangs for about 45 seconds before giving me access. I ran CCleaner first off to knock out registry entries that lost their home but haven't seen any improvement.
What else should I do to get this thing back in order? I'm on Windows 10.
Is there any way to schedule defrag to happen at a particular day/time?
Also, what is this weirdly-named folder (picture)?

View 1 RepliesAfter upgrade from W81 to W10, I have occasional Notepad, Thunderbird email, and PhotoPhilia crashes, no data saved. Occasionally the task does not crash but does disappear from the task bar (visible from Task Manager) though I can't get back into it.
I have not upgraded any of these products. I'd have assumed that Notepad, at least, would be current. I don't know how to find which build I am on.
I have tried and tried to upgrade from WIN 8.1 to 10 with no success.
The error that comes up is "0x80070004 - 0x4000D The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation."
I have removed all 3rd party antivirus, and a bunch of other fixes. A
