Why Does System Configuration Stick With Selective Startup
Aug 8, 2015
My Windows 10 home-64b works flawlessly, but I've realized that the system configuration stubbornly continues to initiate under "Selective Startup" instead of "Normal Startup" which makes me wonder which "services" cannot be loaded. I've tried to change it but it continues to be the same "selective Startup". This makes me uncomfortable cause possible future problems.

Yesterday while checking things on here I ran msconfig for the first time. I found that selective startup was checked off. Not something I set so win 10 must have set it when I installed it. Now what reason would this be for?

I was instructed to use Selective Startup to get Quicken installed (didn't work), and now I can't get out!
This is a laptop that has been stuck with the Microsoft account login (cannot fix it as other options are grayed out). I cannot login with my Microsoft login (says password is wrong), but I can get in using just the Admin. acct., with same password.
Using Admin. acct., I cannot get out of Selective Startup, most items are grayed out, or if I can select options (Enable from Disabled), then I get an error that things cannot be changed.

1. If I try to select normal startup in msconfig.exe, it doesn't stick; always reverts to selective startup.
2. When I boot to the Windows 10 desktop, it always opens a Windows Explorer window at /windows/system/ which shows only a Speech folder in the right panel.
3. Checking my BootManager using BCDEdit, I see this but I don't understand what the entries mean or whether any of them are connected to the problems 1 and/or 2:
Code:
C:Windowssystem32>bcdeditWindows Boot Manager--------------------identifier {bootmgr}

Just getting to grips with W10 and noticed that dual booting can be set up in System Configuration-boot. This was the case in XP, I think or was a previous version. Bit late now as I have easybcd on W7 drive. Before you ask I have never had a successful install where W10 finds W7 and displays that fancy box on start up.

I have the very latest Build of Windows 10 Pro, but recently I have experienced problems with my PC’s general performance – I therefore decided to Run msconfig to then uncheck some 3rd party programs under services within the System Configuration Hiding All window services first.
What is happening is that when I disable all and then go about checking the 3rd party progs one by one, the 1st attempt to tick one of the programmes the system config freezes. I have to then reboot the PC but the same thing happens if I try and attempt to do this again.
if I try the same thing but booting within Safe mode the PC does not freeze – so my question is .. can this action only be carried out in Safe mode ??
I have searched the internet for a few days now but cannot come up with an answer to this .. if you are supposed to be able to do this under normal windows start up then I have a big problem with my OS but if this is a procedure that can only be carried out within safe mode then all is well.

Windows 10 seems to like to scan my entire computer everyday which takes about 2-3 hours at startup. I can't get any work done. I am spending most of my time in the morning waiting...waiting...waiting. When it isn't doing these random scans, it's great and fast.
I have tried rebooting to stop the scans. Often times not able to use the shut down button, so turning off at the main switch...then all havic starts...screens are all messed up...one works the other doesn't, the font are different on each, it is all so random. I realize that Windows 10 is the new Big Brother...watching....watching, but give it a rest, don't do this during working hours (Australia time).

This is **NOT** a boot issue, the system boots up just fine and gets to the login screen fast. The issue is the system startup after login, it is takes a rather long time for Windows to become usable. I have tried stopping all NON windows services in msconfig, but this made barely any difference. Even after the system seems to have finished the startup, once I open the browser it then takes ages until it loads the first web page. If I run task manager there is nothing that is hogging the cpu or memory or disk.
I have defragged the disk, although I had to use a 3rd party tool to do this as Windows defrag refuses to do it because it thinks it is an SSD disk due to the 32GB SSD cache.

I have noticed in my fresh clean install of Windows 10 Pro, when running MSCONFIG that my system is set to Selective startup. If I select Normal startup and click Apply, it immediately defaults back to Selective startup again.
I also notice that one service under the Services tab is not selected - Geolocation Service. Here too, when I select it and click Apply, the check box is cleared again.
I have not disabled any start up programs. Only thing I did was uninstall MS Apps Get Office and Get Skype.

I know how to turn off/on the "USB selective suspend setting". I actually don't mind that it is enabled however what I find annoying is when my external 'wakes', a window pops up showing all of my files on the external as if I just plugged it in for the first time. Is it possible to stop this popup window?
In Windows 8 when I plugged something in for the first time, I got a popup asking what I wanted to do with it. I didn't get that option with W10 ...

This afternoon my wife was doing something on the computer, got stuck, and rebooted. Once she rebooted a screen popped up into a repair diagnostic screen and said it was diagnosing the error to repair it. Only problem was that it didn't repair anything and the options that were available were all tried and nothing fixed this infinite loop issue. Luckily, I backed up my system with Acronis TrueImage so as we're speaking my PC is being restored. Windows 10...

I have a laptop that was a Windows 7 Home Premium machine (HP dv6-2150us) that had an Windows 10 in place update performed on it a few months back (Nov 5, 2015). It had been running fine but recently had been randomly crashing. Two days ago, it crashed again and would boot to the "Startup Repair" mode attempt to run, then tell me "Startup Repair" couldn't repair your PC. and endlessly loop through that (if you told it to reboot) unless I went the Advanced Options.
I tried accessing Safe mode with and without networking, but not luck. I can get to the command prompt.
At one point it out of the blue it displayed the path to the "SrtTrail.txt" file which apparently is the log train for the "Startup Repair". The screwing thing is I check the date/time on the log file and each time the "Startup Repair" runs it does update the file whether it displays it on the screen. So apparently it could be random whether MS lets you know where to look for clues. Yeah MS!
Any way the I looked at the "SrtTrail.txt" and it states that the following pass.
"Check for Updates"
"System Disk Test" "
Disk Failure Diagnosis"
"Disk Metadata Test"
"Target OS Test"
"Volume Content Check"
and the Root cause found "The operating system variation is incompatible with Startup Repair"
I did a bit of Googling and found others with the same problem : [URL] .... But they did not have success in reviving the Machine
Any way of resolving the issue that would leave my programs intact? Is it as simple of having the correct BCD entry? If so, what the BCD entry should be the entry for a Windows 7 box that had a Windows 10 in place upgrade done?
The current entry in the boot record is
osdevice: partition=E:
Systemroot: windows
resumeobject: {3c5d113c-777-11e5-82d9-8199ff9a6bfc}
nx: Optin

I built my very first PC in the weekend. Everything was working fine, but after a restart, I had an error message saying something along the lines of "Windows couldn't start". I then had several options where I ended up choosing something like "Start Windows from a version that worked" which erased like half of my programs and many of my drivers. I then proceeded to reset the computer entirely and restarted.
Now, the computer is working again (as it were before) and I've installed everything again, including all the drivers (I hope). However, when I restart the computer, I get a blue screen that says: "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll start for you. If you'd like to know more, you can search online later for this error: BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO. It then restarts and works perfectly. This only happens every approx. third restart, the other times, it boots just fine.
I bought Windows 10 Home on a USB which I used to install on my new SSD. All the drivers should be up to date. What to do?

Is there anyway to create a all in one install USB stick using the media creation tool. I have 2 pc's running windows 10 Pro and a laptop running windows 10 Home . It just saves me having to have 2 separate install USB Sticks.
I have seen torrents available but I'd rather create one myself so I know it doesn't contain any viruses etc.

I am trying to create a system recovery drive on a usb stick using Create a recovery drive in Settings section.
But apparently I am missing many files such as winre.wim and install.wim as I keep getting error messages that I am missing files and instead am told to insert my Windows Installation dvd to get them. Since I have a Win10 Upgrade install from Win 7 Home Basic, I have no dvd install disk to either copy those files from or use as a rescue dvd, and I looked back at Win 7 files on another drive, and the .wim files are not in 7 either, as that was a Dell reinstall dvd (still have that), but no such files there either.
So can I get Mr. Gates home # in case I need to rescue my OS? My past behavior tells me I WILL need to rescue my pc sooner or later, & maybe this time I can be prepared.

Downloaded Windows 10 ISO, created a bootable flash drive using "Windows 7 USB DVD download tool" which I also got from Microsoft.
Set first boot device to USB in BIOS.
Saved changes and turned laptop off.
Turned it back on, with the flash drive plugged in, but computer boots to Windows 8.1 instead of the Windows 10 installation.
Restarted again, and pressed F9 to show a list of boot devices, it just shows OS boot manager, and DVD drive, not the flash drive.
Tried with Windows 8.1 USB installer, same thing happens.
Went back to BIOS, enabled "Legacy Mode" and turned off "Secure Boot", restarted, the computer can now boot to the USB stick.. for both Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.
Disabled Legacy Support, the computer fails to boot to USB devices again.
So, I cannot boot to a USB device if I have Legacy Mode disabled in my BIOS.And if I boot using Legacy Mode, Windows wants to convert my GPT HDD to MBR.
How do I boot to USB using UEFI instead of Legacy?

My system install of build 10162 won't activate, as they pulled the validation from these builds. Unfortunately, I can't upgrade to 10240, which can, I was told by Windows support, be activated. This is because Windows isn't already activated!!! (Windows Update won't download it (it always stays at 0% )).
To solve this, I want to upgrade manually and thus I flashed the ISO on a blank USB stick. Can I keep all my data and app settings, etc. if I upgrade using the ISO on the stick? Or, in other words, is it possible to "upgrade" when installing an ISO, or do I have to do a clean install?

I work with HAAS CNC lathes and mills, which only accept FAT16-formatted USB drives. I have an old 2gb drive that is starting to fail so I got a new drive. problem is the smallest size I could find is 8GB, which is too big for FAT16. I tried using Disk Management but the resize option was greyed out. Is there any other tool I can use?
