Why Is Disabled Cortana Still Running
Oct 2, 2015I have disabled Cortana but it still runs in the background.
And can it be disabled completely ?
I have disabled Cortana but it still runs in the background.

So I've gotten fed up enough with the terrible windows search system.
I went into services.msc and disabled the windows search service; then restarted my computer.
However, "Cortana" is still listed in my task manager taking up 50mb of memory.
How do I kill Cortana?
Windows Defender is shown both running AND disabled. I have no third-party security or firewall.
I am unable to select this service here (msconfig)-(but rightly set as 'Automatic' in services.msc) nor am I able to set Normal Startup: on applying, all changes are cancelled.
I must have removed some needed startup program or app...?
HOWEVER, Windows Defender DOES start on boot and all is swell. No log errors except for Cortana, which is broke and shows a registry error, but that is another question, I think. In case it is not, here's the log:
Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: Invalid value for registry See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.
I find that when i try to open Cortana i get a message stating that Cortana is disabled by company policy and there is no icon for me to click on. I fail to see how a home computer can be classed as a company.
View 6 RepliesAre these built in to Windows 10? Can they be removed and/or disabled? Does Windows 10 have "stealth" or force updating? And (I have trouble interpreting EULA agreements) does any part of Windows 10 do data collection? (I strongly oppose ANY data mining)
I just built a new PC and need an OS. I use Windows 7 presently on my old pc and am happy Windows 7. I don't care for Win 8.1 and Windows 7 retail is difficult to find. So Windows 10 was my next option unless any of the mentioned concerns have "yes" attached to them.
I would prefer to use a local account, but unless I use my Microsoft account I can't get Cortana to run.
View 9 RepliesIs there a way to make this layout and settings for every user that signs on to a computer through our domain? Teachers do not need Cortana or any web searching through the search box. Is it possible to make these settings a default for all new users who sign on?
View 9 RepliesSince upgrading to Windows 10 last night, app notifications are disabled and the checkbox is greyed out. The top of the screen says, "Some settings are managed by your organization." There is no organization. This is my home PC, I have placed no restrictions on it, nor have I ever touched local group policies.

View 1 Repliesi recently updated to windows 10. I'm having some difficulties regarding internet through Ethernet on It. what usually happens is i am able to surf the Ethernet for around 10 minutes, then the ethernet adapter just quits on me. So i run the network trouble shooter and find you that it needs to reset the DNS, which it does successfully. After that my Ethernet doesn't work anymore till I restart the Laptop. my computer's wifi card is an intel wireless n 7260, and the other network adapter is a pcie gbe family controller.
View 2 RepliesI just got a Win 10 computer, and I am in the process of starting to prep it for moving all my old files over from my XP computer (using PCmover).
One of the things PCmover told me to do was go into Win 10's Task Scheduler and disable the tasks under the Active Tasks tab, which I did.
But now I can't find those disabled tasks to enable them after I complete the PC-to-PC file move. They've disappeared completely.
I disabled UAC and when I try to open Edge, Calculator, etc I get a window message that says that I cant open it with UAC disabled, I find it something very annoying that makes me think about going back to Windows 7, is there any around this?
In Windows 7 for example, I was able to open the calculator with UAC disabled.
I have a Lenovo x1 carbon laptop and i have updated OS from win 8 to win 10. When I'm working for long time with laptop, my keyboard get disabled for all application instead of browser. There is no error. I have to restart laptop to fix it.
View 2 RepliesThe Seach function is often disabled randomly, especially when I shut down the system and turn it on again later. It also happens when the system wakes up from Hibernation.
View 2 RepliesI was on my Window 10 Administration account (Called Tavernier). Then Windows wanted me to link a email so security. I do so. I set my own password. But I realise that it asked me at each starts of the computer. Since I'm the only user I want my computer to start directly on the desktop. So I remove the password.
I wanted to install something for my work, it pops me the normal "Use the Admin rights to execute this" clic yes or no. But this time it asked me a password. So I try my last password and an empty one, the Yes bouton was always gray. So I couldn't install anything on my own computer.
So I decide to open the Super Administration account with the user net Administrator /active: yes
So I go in user options and I realise that my normal account (Tavernier) is not here any more. Gratter. So I want to add one, impossible. Even in command line. Then I unactivate the Super Administrator account, restart computer.
And the result is : "Your account has been disabled. Contact the adminstrator of this computer".
I can't launch the computer in safe mode to open again this Super Admin account. So I feel like I can't use my own computer. I have so really important things to do with my computer.
Why Show app notification is disable ? And how means some settings are managed by your organization ?

How enable this option ?
I upgraded my Win 7 Professional over 1 month ago to Win 10.
A few minor problems but suddenly yesterday the wifi went off and will not locate the router or turn back on in settings.
I have read that it is because of a conflict with VPN. I removed the VPN and reset Win 10 (losing several valuable programs in the process !!) and have also cleaned the registry but there has been no change !!!
I resorted to try to reset my new Win 10 install. But, as soon as I select "Reset this PC" a screen shows up says: "Choose your Keyboard Layout" and the very first choice of course is "US", but my mouse is disabled suddenly and I try to navigate with the keyboard, which I've had some experience, but it seems all the keys are disabled also. So, I can't get past one of the very first screens to even reset Windows 10.
View 1 RepliesI know its a rule of thumb to leave it disabled if running an SSD, but I'm confused since I have both an SSD [ C: ] ( which serves as my boot drive ) and an HDD [ D: ] where I store the rest of my files.
Since there is no option to disable it only for one drive ( Which if there was i would disable it only for the SSD ) Should I just disable it altogether? or would that be a bad idea. Or is there any way I can disable it only for the SSD [ C: ]
Had to try a few different methods to get the start menu not working problem to go away. Finally I had to go back to a restore point from just after the upgrade from Windows 7 to get the start menu to work again.
Now I try to turn back on the folders in Personalization > Start > Choose which folders appear on Start and the only one that is able to be toggled off and on is the Settings one. I want to turn most of them back on, but they are all locked to off.
I hope you can see what I mean if my words do not make sense in the attached screen capture.
I am trying to open the app "Task manager", but windows keeps telling me that my "administrator" wont allow me to.
Here is the exact message that Windows tells me : "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator" ....
I have a Sony Optiarc DVD drive. When I first upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 it was working but later it is not. It shows in the Bios but not in Windows. I even bought a new Lite-on DVD drive and put it in and still not recognized by Windows 10.
View 9 RepliesAfter the latest update, I notice that the Win+Spacebar hot key no longer works, and when I go to configure the language bar, it is not even an option any more.
View 4 RepliesI have disabled my lockscreen in both security options and power options, but it still shows up when it wakes from sleep... how to I get this PROPERLY disabled?
View 4 RepliesI have "don't require a password" set in Control Panel > Power Options but whenever I wake it up it asks for my password. Is there some other setting I'm missing?
View 2 RepliesSo I was messing with the services startup parameters and I managed to change something which is now preventing my USB ports from working. My kb/mouse lights up during boot and then goes off and stays off just before the login screen appears. How I could fix this without reinstalling windows again? I've tried all ports but none of them work .
