Why Unable To Play Video Or DVDs
Sep 18, 2015
Just downloaded the new "free" Windows 10 and found that I cannot play videos or DVD's. Had Windows 8.1 previously and was able to find a fix but no luck so far. I don't want to spend $99.99 on Windows Pro which is what Microsoft says is what I need to do.

I've tried several DVD's. They all work in my MBP and Mac Mini without issue. The DVD's are not showing up in Windows Media Player and I even tried VLC player and they didn't play. I have a bunch of store-bought movies that I've been experimenting with so this isn't like I burned a DVD and did it wrong. Specifically, I attached a PC to the TV so that my SO can watch workout/yoga videos. The DVD's show up in Explorer and I can browse the files on them but not play them.

System that doesn't use the disc drive for dvd's or video disc format is wrong - taking away something that now, you have to pay for. Do the wright thing Microsoft and reinstate the disc media player.

Having recently updated to Windows 10, I am astonished (annoyed) to discover Windows 10 does not play WMV video files, particularly those created using Windows Movie Maker. There doesn't seem to be very much advice on this on the net and the following is short list of the tried and failed suggestions:
Turning on/off WMP through Control Panel>Programs>Programs & Features>Turn Windows Feature On or Off.Repeating the above then restarting my laptop twice, after which running sfc/scannow at the Command Prompt.Disabling / enabling "Turn on DirectX Video Acceleration for WMV files" in WMP Options.Troubleshooting Fix via Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Troubleshooting>All Categories>Windows Media Player Settings - this just returns the message "Configuration settings might be set incorrectly" - but doesn't expand on what settings are wrong.
I also came across this "FIX: Update to enable DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) of Windows Media Video content in Windows Media 10" at [URL] .....
However after downloading the 'fix' (Download the WindowsMedia10-KB888656-x86-Global-ENU.exe package now.) it doesn't install - instead I get the error message "Not enough storage is available to process this command".
I know that there are third party free WMV players available, but I liked WMP and cannot understand why it won't work on Windows 10.

I have an HP Split X3 Tablet/Laptop (13-m110dx) that I just recently updated to Windows 10 Pro.
All is going very well with it except video playback from anything such as Plex or YouTube. What happens is: The video will start but will just keep looping the first second of the video while playing really choppy sound.
I have done the following: Installed the latest drivers from HPInstalled the drivers that were used on Windows 8.1Uninstalled all Windows UpdatesDid a clean install of Windows 10 Pro
I'm suspecting that it is the 'Intel Chipset Installation Utility' that is messing it up.

No matter which video player I use, nor which video format I am trying to play, the file hangs sometimes for several minutes before finally playing. Sometimes I have to manually close the program and start it again because it just takes too long. This seems to be happening with all video formats, all players. Got me stumped and it is very annoying. These are files stored on my hard drive, but it is also happening with streaming live video from the internet. I usually have to stay connected to the video site for several minutes before it starts to play.

After upgrading my win 7 to win 10, how do I now play or show my video files I had stored in my hard drive? When I go to my video files I can't play as I get a "Media Player" ad for an additional cost to view MY files. Why? Do I no longer have a working Microsoft Media Player program or what do I now have in wind 10?

I know they're promising native MKV support. I'm hoping this means I can stream straight to my TV or Xbox by right clicking the file and choose the "play to" option but I don't ever remember this being confirmed.

I am aware that windows 10 (I am used to Windows 7) will not negatively play MPG files. I know this is a side effect of the codec being ripped out to prevent DVD playback via Media Player. The annoying thing is I have quite a few family MPG files mainly from our ageing Sony Camcorder on my system. Luckily I have Cyberlink Media Show pre installed that can play the files within it's own software and the media suite (espresso) can convert said files to other formats.
However, converting takes time and it is frustrating that media player 12 won't do the job and Windows Explorer won't display these MPG files with the handy thumbnail within file explorer viewing. Given that I am a little distrustful of codec packs and all my other files such as MP4, WMV etc etc play well I am looking for a solution that maybe just allows windows explorer to display the thumbnails and as an added bonus Media Player can once again play them. It does seem draconian that MS stifled a common playback format such as MPG in the last 2 windows and a major backwards step. I know I could download something like VLC or Media Player Classic but it seems pointless seeing as I have software that can already play them.
I tried K Lite Codec Pack a while back but hated the effect it had that I uninstalled. It was causing thumbnails to constantly refresh everytime I opened a folder. So is there a way of slipping in a single codec only related to MPG files without risk of unsettling all the other stuff that works well? Many of the codec packs seem to have the unpleasant side effect of slipping in extra installations and seem very dodgy and capable of causing grief.

I have checked device manager and updated display adapter but problem not solved.
Specification of my PC :Intel( R) core ™2 CPU 4300 @ 1.80GHz 900 MHz, Ram 2GB,32 bit OS,x 64 based processor,no graphics card installed.

I've tried everything at this point that I can think of but I can't seem to get these two apps to work anymore. I can use the preview apps no problem.
I've tried using the Powershell command to basically refresh the apps installed on the machine and it fixed my Mail/Calendar apps that were also having this issue but no luck on my Media apps.
I've tried manually uninstalling them and redownloading them from the store with no luck either. I'm not sure what has happened and would like to know if at all possible, how I may be able to get these working again.

The disk drive is physically working and connected properly to the motherboard. I can open it, put in a disk, see the light flashing and hear it humming. But cds/dvds do not run despite autoplay being enabled. There is no icon for the drive in explorer, but it does appear in device manager as SlimType DVD A DS8A5SH (double listing).
Worked when I had Winblows 7 : Sometimes works edition.
Specs : Gateway Laptop + Winblows 10 64 bit

I have an issue I can't seem to find decent info about. My Win 10 laptop won't see files and folders on DVDs I burned on another box unless I make an ISO on the Win 7 machine first, and then copy it over to the Win 10 machine and "mount" the ISO.
I even tried creating an ISO from an older DVD and then burning it to a new DVD with my Win 10 machine. I still can't use File Explorer on the new DVD. It seems Win 10 on this box won't "see" the files & folders on the DVDs unless the original DVD was burned on this machine. If it is originally burned here, then it works fine. The DVDs I burned on my other laptop using Win 7 can't be "explored" like they used to be on Win 7 and 8.
This isn't an issue with the DVD drive. I've pretty much ruled out drivers, hardware, etc. The drive works fine for everything else. Win 10 recognizes the drive just fine and I can use the drive to create ISOs, burn discs, etc. It just won't "explore" DVDs I made somewhere else - at least not directly from the disc.
I used to do a lot of DVD creating and editing with Win 7 & 8. The processes I've been using are significantly hampered with Win 10. It appears I'm gonna need to get "creative" with my current DVD editing & creation processes.

I upgraded my Lenovo U310 laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 a week ago. Everything seems to have upgraded successfully. The only problem that I can find is that none of the video streaming from Windows 10 apps can be played. I get an error 'Unsupported video type or invalid file path' when I click on a video article in USA Today or when I try to stream video from any other apps, NBC News, MSN Money, etc... from Windows 10 store.
I have no issue streaming videos from any of the browser though. What could be missing that could cause video streaming to fail?
