Basically, I plan to disconnect every other Drive from my computer (my 2nd SSD and the HDD I use for data storage). From there, I'd do a clean install of Windows 10 onto my SSD.
Will that SSD become my C Drive by default (I want it to)? Will is stay that way when I reconnect my other drives provided I continue to boot from my SSD?
I'm about to build my first desktop, and I have a laptop with Windows 10 (upgraded from 7 which it came with). I don't plan on using the laptop anymore, so is it possible to install the laptop's hard drive into the desktop then move the Windows install to an SSD? If not, should I just buy a Win10 key or would it be possible to contact Microsoft about transferring the OS over?
View 1 RepliesI just bought a new 850 EVO and i am trying to make a clean install of windows 10 pro through my optical drive, not a usb drive. I turned bios to AHCI and everything seems fine. At least everything worked fine with windows 7. So the problem is that after the installation asked me for first time to restart my pc and i removed the DVD, then bios showed me that there is no Hard drive in my system, after making the AHCI checks.

So to find my windows product key i had to download magic jelly bean key finder. Now i right now have only a 500GB HDD, so i plan to add an SSD to run windows, and a few programs from. I don't want to copy the OS from my current drive over, i want to do a clean install of windows on the SSD. How would i do this?

is it possible to upgrade my windows so I will keep all my files. I already have windows 8.1 on it so why wouldn't it work?
I've already upgraded to Windows 10 on my desktop PC, and there were no issues with the upgrade. However, I work from home and my work has informed me that they won't accept Windows 10, they will only accept 7 or 8.1 as their operating system (they also only accept Internet Explorer for browsing, etc.). So I can either downgrade, which I really don't want to do, buy a second PC, which I can't afford to do, or (I'm hoping) create a new partition and run Windows 7 from that.
So my question is, is it possible to create a new partition for Windows 7 while running Windows 10 on my main partition? Will I have to downgrade and install Windows 10 later? Or can I do it from Windows 10 already?
When I was running Windows 7, my system had a small solid state C drive that did not have enough space for windows 10 upgrade. I got a larger 2TB regular hard disk and used the manufacturer's software to clone the old Windows-7 SSD C drive to the new 2TB and then upgraded to Windows 10.
Now under windows 10, when go into defrag, the C Drive shows as a Solid State drive and of course windows does not want to optimize it.
The new drive definitely is not SSD. I assume somehow that setting was cloned from the old disk.
Is there either a way to change the C drive to a regular "hard disk drive" or force windows to defrag what it thinks is a SSD?
I currently have a PC that is running Windows 8.1. I have a 120GB SSD as the primary drive ( C: ) with the OS and a few programs installed on it. I also have a 750GB HDD ( D: ) installed in the computer. Over the past year and a half, I've installed some programs to the SSD and some to a folder on the HDD. I plan on updating this computer to Windows 10. To do that though, I was planning on wiping the SSD and doing a fresh install to it and just reinstalling any programs. My question is if there will be any issues regarding the programs installed on the HDD. I'm guessing some of them probably still have certain files installed on the SSD and that wiping it will mess up those programs.
I'm also wondering what a good way of installing programs to a secondary drive is for the future. I'd like to install some programs to the secondary drive without worrying about certain files still existing on the SSD while still being able to install some programs to the SSD itself. This way if updating in the future, I wouldn't have to worry about this issue. Let me know if this makes sense and if I need to clarify something.
Received HP notebook for Christmas. Model 15-F211WM. Having problems with (1) making Mozilla Firefox the default web browser instead of Microsoft Edge; and (2) viewing DVDs (I insert DVD, drive whirs, lights flash, nothing plays, get no messages). How do you access the DVD drive anyway?

I have attached a pic of what it says.I have changed the permissions to let me do this or am I looking in the wrong place? If I save the files to the desktop however and then move to the relevant folder it works fine.
View 5 RepliesExcuse me if this has been asked before, I have a weird issue in This Computer. When I double-click a hard drive or other device, it tries to launch some unknown deleted application and fails with an error message (see below). If I right-click on the drive, I see that "cmd" is default instead of Open and I can proceed if I select Open. This issue occurs only in This Computer. Clicking any other folder on the desktop or elsewhere opens as expected. Could it be a malware? I'm now scanning with Malwarebytes Antimalware just in case.
View 1 RepliesI have a HP Pavilion 23 all in one PC (23-f221ea) and the 1TB hard disk is getting rather full.. I want to change for say a 4TB drive, I know that I can't clone my 1TB drive to the 4TB drive using something like Acronis as max is 2TB and the new 4TB drive will have to be GPT formatted. I have already updated my PC to W10 with the ISO disk I made from MS update.. Can I install the larger disk GPT formatted and install with the ISO disk I made??? Or will I have to start all again and install with Win8/8.1 first..??

A few days ago I got a new Win8.1 laptop that I smoothly upgraded to Win10. This laptop now shows as being registered with Microsoft. I just now purchased a 250GB SSD that will arrive in a week or so. I want to install Win10 on this new drive. A friend just gave me a DVD burned with the Win10 ISO. When I get my new drive I'll install it into the laptop. Then I'll boot from the DVD and (hopefully) do a *clean* install of Win10. And (hopefully) Microsoft will recognize the laptop as already officially registered. Will this plan work? Am I missing anything important? Do I need to get all the drivers first? Or will the upgrade process grab all the needed drivers? My friend said when he did this process it got all the needed drivers. I already did a backup System Image of Win10 to an external hard drive, and I made a System Recovery DVD. There's no personal files or documents on the existing Win10 drive.

Can I use my old hard drive for storage such as my steam library and a few applications etc even if it still has the previous OS on it? I know I'd have to set the SSD as my boot drive.

My sister has windows 10 on the laptop. is it possible to make an iso from that then put it on a usb and just buy the windows 10 disc kit and use the product key on there.

The problem is my case does not support external drive bays, and I don't particularly want to fork out the cash for an external optical drive. I read online that you could create a USB boot disk for windows 10, but couldn't find an explanation on how. I have a 16gb flash drive, and a laptop with a dvd player running windows 7. I was wondering how I could get windows 10 on to my pc?

Right, I have my OS (Windows 10) installed on the C:/ drive, but I'd like to reinstall it on the O:/ drive. I've only come across one way of doing it:
Clean installation, then copy/move the C:/ drive's content to the O:/ drive.This is what I'm aiming for:
-Having my OS moved from the C:/ to the O:/ drive.
-Cleaning the C:/ drive from all data.
-Keeping the S:/ drive untouched, no problem I'd say.
-Possible: Having the C:/ and O:/ drives switch names after the installation (So the SSD with the newly installed OS would be named C:/.).
Is this possible to do this in one move and use the same Windows 10 key?
Problem: When I click on my H: drive or try to access it from the command line, it gives me an access denied error. However, all of the applications that I have installed on that drive run without issue. So, there is some access there. (See attached images. The first shows the hard drive state in diskmanager and in windows explorer. The second image shows the minecrafter launcher profile (that it is stored in H: and the application running, proving that there is some access.
System: Home built PC: (C:) 240GB SSD for OS, (E:) 1TB HDD for file storage and backup, (H:) 1TB HDD for large applications and video editing files. All drives are Simple, Basic, and none have encryption. All use the SATA connectors.
Process: I had Windows 7 Home 64 bit with, among many other things, Comodo Internet Security, Virtualbox, ImageDisk.
During the upgrade process, I noticed that Windows 10, during the upgrade, ran the file system check and fix "problems" on the H: drive.
(Side note) Having forgotten to uninstall Comodo before the upgrade, I did not have network after the upgrade. The fix was non-trivial as I had to use a second computer to download the unofficial comodo uninstaller. Reboot. Uninstall the network devices. Reboot. And once Windows 10 was up and running, it reinstalled the network devices and the network was available.
Still, whether before or after the Comodo uninstall and reinstall, the uninstall of ImageDisk, or the uninstall of the Virtualbox network device, I have no access to the H: drive.
I was moving video files (AVI) from an external backup drive (WD Element) to another external backup drive (Seagate expansion) after having moved another video file from my laptop (Acer) to that Seagate external drive. The night before I had moved some video files from the WD to the Seagate with no problem but using a different laptop (Sony). These video files are all rather large and I can tell that the space is still being allocated on the Seagate because while the folder cannot be seen the space that was there is still being used by the Seagate because I am missing over 100GB which would be about the size of that now missing folder.
What happened was there was a message that the Seagate drive could not be recognized while the files were in the process of being moved to that drive from the WD. This is after I had already moved a video file of about 26GB with no problem into that now missing folder. When I saw the message I attempted several times to move files to that Seagate drive but I could not so I unplugged the Seagate drive from that laptop (Acer) then reinserted it into the usb port. I got a repair message that said it needed to be repaired because some files were corrupted and that no data would be lost but the drive would be unavailable during the repairs so I checked ok. It took only about 30 seconds and it said the repairs were completed and the drive was available but I noticed that the folder that I was moving the video files to was not gone.
As I stated there are more than 100GB of files in that folder some are video and others are audio recordings that were created by using the myrecording (audio and video) features of the Acer laptop and they are very important so I need to figure out if they can be retrieved from that Seagate drive. I have not copied anything else onto that Seagate drive but I have plugged it into the Acer computer to ensure it is being recognized. Both the external drives WD and Seagate are plug and play that are powered from the usb -- they have no power adapters.
Can I install Windows 10 using an external DVD Drive on a new PC build?
View 3 RepliesI have an old PC I use for testing things. I want to install Win10 on it before installing it anywhere else. But this PC has an 80GB SSD C drive. Currently it has only 12GB free. I can free up maybe 6 or 7 more GB by removing a bunch of USER temp data (if I'm brave enough), but that is still way below the Win10 system requirements. I have 2 additional internal drives, 512GB each. (Seemed like a lot 5 years ago.) The D drive has over 400GB free. Is the Win10 installation smart enough to use space on the D drive, or am I going to have to replace my small SSD with something bigger?

How do I install Win 10 on my SATA drive, change it to become the bootable drive, and retain Win 7 on drive C? Also, if I decide to revert back to Win 7, what process do I go through to revert back to the old Drive C?
Windows install says ( Can't install on USB flash drive.). That's how it sees my SSD. Do I have to put my original HDD back in, image SSD to it and then try to install?
