Window Old Directory In C Drive
Oct 24, 2015
After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 using the free upgrade program from MS, the old windows 7 installation has been moved a folder call Windows.old. I am not sure if this is for reverting back to Windows 7 in case Windows 10 installation fails or for some other reason.
However, this is folder is hogging a very large disk space ( around 36 GB) on my C: drive. Is there anyway we can remove this without affecting the current Windows 10 installation? Or it needs to be there to refer to some old data?
Note: After upgrade my Windows 10 installation was not very stable, hence I have done a clean installation of Windows 10 on my system.

Is it possible to move the entire "Users" directory from C drive to D drive and have it be recognized without doing anything special?
I do a system image of my C drive regularly but my D drive is continuously backed up to a local NAS and I would like my user information backed up the same way.

Last, previously closed window outline remains displayed. Sometimes can 'force' it to go away by left clicking on an unused portion of desktop but not always.
Just got laptop for Christmas and has always had this problem so might be a setting.
Have looked at Advanced -> Visual Settings but didn't see any that looked like would fix (tried setting Best Performance - which turned everything off but didn't fix)

I am running Windows 10. I had a USB stick in the computer. After an update-restart, I ejected the USB drive, and now my computer is slow after idling and there was a nagging message that asserts itself. First it was something about what do you want me with removable drive E.
I finally clicked on that message, now i get the message "E: the directory name is invalid" Now that pops up before I do any clicking on anything.
I'm not sure if I inadvertantly indexed the E drive, or if its just that the E drive must be there.

I recently upgraded my windows 7 laptop to windows 10. It would seem to have been successful. When I plug in a USB memory stick OR a USB external drive - the device shows twice in the directory. As I type this, I have a USB external hard drive plugged in. The directory list shows 2 entries 'E Drive' - when both are expanded, each has full details of the disks content!

This error message appears: Cannot create the directory 'C:Program FilesiTunes'. A file with this name already exists. Please rename or remove the file and click retry, or click Cancel to exit.
I can't find this directory using File Explorer. I have uninstalled all Apple components and done an iTunes re-install but the same message appears.

So I am currently on the Windows Insider Preview builds and have been having some issues with them and decided that they aren't for me. I was trying to do an upgrade installation to get back onto stock Windows 10 without losing anything but any time I get the installer running I am not allowed to select the option to keep all my stuff because "Windows may be installed in an unsupported directory." I have looked around and it talks about changing the default program files directory in the registry and to revert that back, but I never did that tweak in the first place.

I have had Windows 10 installed for a while and decided the other day to save anew picture from my webcam for my personal communications etc. I did get the webcam on and clicked take picture. When I went to use the picture it was not where the systemsaid it would be. Nothing had been saved. After checking the properties of the directory the system said I did not have permission to use that directory.
I also tried to download a PDF to my download directory and the file was not saved for the same reason. Their is obviously a permission problem from going to Windows 10. I previously had Windows 7 Home.

I just finished setting up my wife's new laptop and then totally spaced the PIN that I used to setup her laptop. She is running Windows 10 Home edition. I am still logged on so I have access to Windows but I can't use the PIN reset function and I didn't get a chance to setup her Microsoft Account info, so I can't use that feature either.
I am looking for a file directory location where the PIN is saved. It has to be saved in an XML file or something like that.

Windows 10 just came out today and I have been attempting to install it on my Windows 8.1 Pro desktop. I was able to get it to work on a Windows 7 Pro with no problems. I have been using the Media Creation Tool that I downloaded straight for Microsoft. Every time I have run it on my Win 8.1 Pro, after downloading it, it comes up with an error message saying: "Something Happened: setup has failed to initialize the working directory".
I also tried to create a Win10 bootable USB but when I booted to it said my key wouldn't work. I looked over several times and it wasn't wrong. I got this copy of Windows 8.1 Pro from Dreamspark but it is a legitimate version of Windows.
I have also tried updating my Win 8.1, using the Windows Update Diagnostics Tool, and using the "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" thingy.
I also tried deleting the $Windows. ~WS and $Windows. ~BT folders and re-downloading Windows 10 but no avail.

Having some trouble installing on this tablet. It worked fine on my other computers. I tried installing from a USB drive and got " setup failed to initialize the working directory". Then tried upgrading directly from the media creation tool site and got "something happened" error sometime aftr it completed downloading.

I checked and all of my drivers are 32 bit and under some utilities there are a lot of files that aren't found as in not on my computer. I have also found that I seem to be booting through a virtual device through PXE to a Linux Ubuntu server...I know my drive is a shadow copy and that the files I see are for my viewing pleasure and the actual files are set up like an XP directory with documents and setting separate from the user folder. I am also running a dummy bios that is protected. It reacts differently in different brands of laptops. There are common references among all my pcs as in what they want running...print and fax, backup and sync, sound recorder and video as well.
They also track me. I traced the software to a site on facebook called freeware sys and dilshad sys who I have found out is or was a social worker in NewYork city and a game programmer as well. They have not stolen a penny from be but they are running keystroke loggers. The use the log files to counter what I do to rid f them. I have last many laptops to them and I have also seen through a utility boot program that they transfer data to my pc through facebook...call me paranoid but I can back all of this up.

I have a folder (let's call it BASKET), inside that folder I have many other folders (for the sake of the example, I will name for example 3 folders - banana, apple, and cucumber). These 3 folders (in my case its many many folders) have files in them. I would like to move those files (from banana, cucumber, and apple) to the BASKET folder. The folders are so many, it's tedious to go in each one and move the files back one by one.

I changed Command Prompt on my Taskbar so when I click on it, it opens as Administrator. That sets the default directory as C:WINDOWSsystem32 which I don't like, since any files I create that do not have a path specified will be created there.
I want it to open in my user directory.
When I look at the properties I see Start in: %homedrive%%homepath% which converts to C:Usersmyaccountname yet when I launch the Command Prompt it still goes to C:WINDOWSsystem32.

I just moved from 64 bit Windows 7 to 10 so I backed everything on my 4TB Seagate Backup Plus external drive. I also have Carbonite so all is not lost if it comes to that. I made a base Image using Macrium Reflect that I still would like to get back though.
Anyway the drive was working fine until I remotely (from my chair downstairs) was doing things on my PC. I occasionally take over my computer remotely if I'm watching tv and remember I need to do something. So I was in the process of moving files from the Backup Plus to Windows 10 that's when the drive locked up. I went upstairs and got on my computer and found out Windows 10 was now not recognizing the Backup Plus. Rebooting didn't work so I shut the drive off overnight and plugged it back in today but now get "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".
Disk Management shows ok and I ran Seagate's SeaTools for Windows in "Short Drive Self Test" mode and it also shows 'Pass".
I tried Recuva and a scan showed a lot of files but I'm not exactly sure how to use this... I set option to scan for undeleted files. I then made a folder on my C drive desktop to dump everything but then it says "These file names are too long to be recovered to the selected destination (634). Do you want to change the destination folder." Anyway so where is it wanting me to put everything?
What are the steps (and software) I should be doing to (1) recover my files and (2) what I need to do to use the Backup Plus drive again.

I have a legit Win 7 laptop. I made a Win 10 reservation a few weeks back. Today, I went to microsoft[DOT]com/en-us/software-download/windows10 to download the "Media creation tool". I chose the 64-bit version because my laptop is 64-bit. The first 100 minutes was Downloading. Next 15 minutes was Verifying Download. Third stage was something about media center.
And then I got to a choice of a) Upgrade your PC now or b) Prepare USB drive (or something like this). I chose Option A. It got to 3% when I got this error message: Something happened. Setup has failed to initialize the working directorySee attached screenshot.
I thought to myself, "Well, the Windows 10 installation files are now on my hard drive. I won't have to wait 2 hours again." Well, I'm wrong. I double-clicked the Media Creation Tool exe file again, and it's back to downloading Windows 10 from 1% again!

I've trying out the new preview, 10240. Everything works fine except for the default documents folder (and the same for Images). As my screenshots reveal, by default the documents and images folder are the ones with OneDrive. (My system is in Spanish, but it seems self-explanatory, I believe)
After some examination, I located the "Storage" section in the new settings window and I see that the default folder for Documents is OneDrive. However, after I set to "This PC (Drive C)" it doesn't do anything, as as soon as I close the window, the option reverts back to OneDrive.
I actually like and use OneDrive, and I had no problems with it with Win8.1. So I don't want to disable it.
