Windows Fails To Boot After Shutdown

Jan 1, 2016

I have just built a new gaming PC and everything works fine, windows installed correctly, all drives are recognized programs are installed etc.

But I have a small problem... When I shut down, power off and leave my PC for a while, upon startup, windows wont boot. It goes onto the motherboard screen and then says ''starting automatic repair''. It gives me a list of options, and the only option which gets me back to windows is to restore to a windows recovery backup which I created. Every time I shut down, I have to restore and then add a few programs that got removed which is very annoying.

The PC is stable and all my programs which are installed are working fine, but for some reason, it enters this recovery mode when I start up from a shutdown.

I am running windows 10 64bit, my motherboard is an Asus VII Hero and I have installed all the drivers which are needed along with a few programs. I am thinking I may need to do a re-installation of windows, would that fix the problem?

Boot Windows On A Schedule After Shutdown

Feb 10, 2016

I prefer to have my system shut down overnight rather than sleeping. Is there any way to schedule a system boot at a specific time in the morning? Windows update is able to boot from shut down when it feels like it. Is there any way I can do this, apart from putting my PC to sleep overnight?

Recovery Drive Boot Fails With Missing Boot Configuration Data

Feb 2, 2016

When I try to boot from a recovery flash drive, it fails with: EFIMicrosoftBootBCD error status: 0xc000000f and message: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

The recovery flash drive was created on a Lenovo ideapad originally with Windows 8, now upgraded to Windows 10, latest upgrades applied. Checked the box for copying system files. Target drive was a 16GB DataTraveler flash drive formatted as FAT32. Creation ran to completion with no errors. When booting normally, Windows 10 runs fine with no issues. I tried re-creating the recovery drive with the same results.

I created a repair disk and tried to use bootrec to fix the issue, but I suspect it did nothing or fixed the c: drive. I ran boot rec while in the root directory on the flash drive.

UEFI Fails To Boot From USB Stick

Oct 22, 2015

Downloaded Windows 10 ISO, created a bootable flash drive using "Windows 7 USB DVD download tool" which I also got from Microsoft.

Set first boot device to USB in BIOS.

Saved changes and turned laptop off.

Turned it back on, with the flash drive plugged in, but computer boots to Windows 8.1 instead of the Windows 10 installation.

Restarted again, and pressed F9 to show a list of boot devices, it just shows OS boot manager, and DVD drive, not the flash drive.

Tried with Windows 8.1 USB installer, same thing happens.

Went back to BIOS, enabled "Legacy Mode" and turned off "Secure Boot", restarted, the computer can now boot to the USB stick.. for both Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

Disabled Legacy Support, the computer fails to boot to USB devices again.

So, I cannot boot to a USB device if I have Legacy Mode disabled in my BIOS.And if I boot using Legacy Mode, Windows wants to convert my GPT HDD to MBR.

How do I boot to USB using UEFI instead of Legacy?

Slow Boot And Shutdown Time

Jul 30, 2015

10 doesn't seem to be booting very nicely. What I mean is that it seems to be having a difficult time initilizing my SSD, so upon boot I get a blank black screen for anywhere from 60-180 seconds, where the primary drive activity LED is inactive, before it actually boots. This could be problematic, because I need it to both boot and shut down very quickly since I use my laptop for class; no sleep mode, either, because my system is old and batteries no longer work with my mobo.

Dual Boot Menu Not Appearing When Starting From Shutdown

Jan 11, 2016

I have a laptop which had Windows 7 installed on a normal HDD and an SSD which I added after it was lying around spare. I then updated to Windows 10 via the free upgrade. Everything was working fine, and I decided to put Windows 10 on the SSD for quicker booting.

I did a clean install on the SSD using the Windows 10 installation media and everything now works fine until I shut down the laptop.

After powering on and seeing the Bios screen I then just get a black screen and the boot menu to choose which OS to boot off (Windows 10 is now installed on both the HDD and the SSD) does not appear.

A workaround is to go into the Bios after powering on and exiting the Bios without making any changes, then the boot menu appears as normal and I can log in to either installed OS. Also if I'm in Windows and restart then everything works as expected.

I've tried the repair tools from the Windows 10 installation media., which said there was nothing to repair, and have tried swapping to the old text based boot menu, which had the same problems.

Installation :: Upgrade From Windows 8 Fails?

Sep 8, 2015

I've successfully updated to Windows 10 on my two Surfaces, but there is some kind of issue on my desktop PC. The upgrade process from Windows 8 fails at about 71% total (Installing features and drivers at 91%), and the error I get is:

C1900101-40017 Windows Update ran into a problem.

When I click on "Get help with this error" I'm directed to a page with some general troubleshooting with Windows Update. I've run Windows update repair tool and it fixed some issues, but the installation failed again.

I have now tried freeing up more disk space which I admit was a bit tight and I'm preparing to run the update again. Still, I'd prefer if there was a more detailed error message or a log file where I could see what exactly went wrong, but there are no indications where I might find one (either in the error message, the troubleshooter, or Google). As it is, I'm shooting blind here and this will now be my fifth upgrade attempt.

Updates :: Upgrade From Windows 8.1 Fails With Error Code 80070005

Aug 14, 2015

I received notification that my Windows 10 reservation is now ready. After downloading and preparing to install through Windows Update, I receive a failure notice with error code 80070005.

I am currently on Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I have administrative privileges.

For several months, I've had an ongoing issue when I run 'sfc /scannow', corrupt files are found, some of which it cannot be repaired. From the CBS.log file, I found these related to "utc.app.json". I was assured that when Microsoft sent out update for DiagTracking (KB3022345), it causes a false positive for file corruption.

Also worth noting is that I currently have my boot SSD partitioned and configured to dual boot Windows 8.1 Pro and Linux. This all works fine, and I've been told this shouldn't be a problem for upgrading to Windows 10.

I would like to do an in-place upgrade to Windows 10, not a clean install, so that I keep all of my software and settings as they are.

Windows Corrupted Files SFC And DISM Image Recovery Fails

Aug 2, 2015

I have been trying to fix my windows 10 corrupted files but I have been unabled to recover it. I tried every possible way of recovering using DISM commands, but to no avail. I tried also the sfc /scannow but as usual this command hardly ever fixes issues regarding corrupted files. I have tried using dism in several ways by specifying the location and the install.esd file from my usb flashdrive windows copy and even tried the health commands on powershell..still wont work. The first command I tried and for all of them I get the same error message, which looks like this:

C:WINDOWSsystem32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.10240.16384

Image Version: 10.0.10240.16384

[==========================100.0%==========================]

Error: 0x800f081f

The source files could not be found. Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see [URL] .....

The DISM log file can be found at C:WINDOWSLogsDISMdism.log

I have heard people saying that I need to refresh my pc as a last solution and I don't want that since I have all my settings and programs migrated from the upgrade...

I have been reading on the web that there is a way of specifying the packages missing via command and then download them manually..

Reboot After Windows Update Vs Shutdown And Restart

Aug 31, 2015

Noticed that after an update from Windows Update you "Must" do a Reboot for the installation/update to process. In prior versions of Windows when I would take an update, I might just wait until I shut the PC down for the night, and it would finish up in the morning upon startup. In Windows 10 that no longer works (for me) it MUST be a Reboot for it to process...

Apps :: Windows Store Apps Update Fails

Dec 3, 2015

All Windows Store apps that I have fail when they are automatically updated. Here's what I just got in my event log.

Event ID 20 - Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070002: OneNote.

When I go into the Store and look at the update it shows the update as having had a problem. I can click on the spinner icon which downloads and installs the app so all is not lost.

I don't have any other problems with Windows Update. Other than Store apps they all automatically install just fine. I've seen lots of various solutions for WU problems but I haven't found one specifically for Windows Store updates. I'm hesitant to try one of these solutions since WU works fine except for Store apps as I mentioned.

Installation :: Windows Boot And Windows On Different Drives

Feb 10, 2016

Before installing Windows 10 I clean reinstalled my Windows 7 onto a new SSD but inadvertently left my BIOS boot drive as my old HDD. Now I find that I have my windows 10 boot files in the HDD and the rest of the OS on the SSD, so I am still dependant on that old HDD. It's quite old, and I tried to swap it out to a new HDD but found this issue.

I've tried BootRec /RebuildBcd, BootRec /FixMbr and BootRec /FixBoot, rebooting the PC between each, but without success. I want to make the SSD bootable, what have I missed?
