Oct 4, 2015It stays on "checking for updates" for hours and never advances. I left it overnight and have tried multiple times. No errors, nothing.

View 3 RepliesI installed Win 10 a few weeks ago and today is the first time that I've turned it on since then. I checked for Windows updates and it found some and appeared to start to download and install them. Then the window disappeared and I checked for updates again. "RuntimeBroker.exe Element not found". What does this mean in Microsoftese?
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to intstall updates for Windows 7 in Control Panel/Check for updates/Install Updates, but Upgrade to Windows 10 is on screen and I can't seem to proceed without the update. I already tried it and I don't like it so backed out. I don't want to upgrade and want it off of my computer. How do I remove it and all the components associated with it? I only use it for personal use, email, Facebook, a few games, etc. and not for business. 10 was too confusing and there's no one over my shoulder teaching me a new system and where all my stuff went.
View 1 RepliesI've been working with a handful of Windows 10 boxes through the various releases of the tech preview to clean installs using RTM media and I've had a recurring problem.Normally, to get to Windows Updates, I click on the Start Button, and type 'updates' and my top result is "Check for Updates" with the gear icon and it says "system settings" directly under "Check for Updates".
So, today, on a new machine i have been setting up, all of a sudden "Check for Updates", system settings, is now simply NOT SHOWING UP in the search. My new "Best Match" option is now JAVA which has it's own "Check for Updates" and it's a desktop app.i know that I can go through Notifications, All Settings and find Update and Recovery...but this is slow. I want to just hit the Start key and type Updates.
how to get results to appear in the search? I cannot believe that I cannot hit Start and just type "Windows Update" and find this thing.
Edit; I just deleted the index and rebuilt it. No improvements.
Edit 2: I just uninstalled Java 8 Update 60, and that didn't resolve the issue either.
Edit 3: I added C:Program Data to the Index locations and this didn't resolve the issue.
I used to have a program that checks activation/expiration of windows and/or Microsoft office with just one click. I think the name was "check activation" ...
View 2 RepliesNew PC with a fresh W10 Pro installation. After cca 10 days I cannot run anything from search window with the cogwheel or "toothed" wheel on the left including for example "Check for Updates","Windows Update Settings",... It doesn't react to my mouse clicking at all
I have to use "Setting window" (Control Panel).
Why the search doesn't find 'windows update' / 'check for updates' ? Other searches work , but this isn't , on my other pc's "check for updates" works . Posted pics with working 'add or remove' too .
View 3 RepliesNot sure if it's just me, but for some reason, since the Jan 12 patch Tuesday, I no longer see definition updates for Windows Defender on Windows Update's "View your update history" page.
I, for one, am happy about this change, since those "Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602" were clogging up the update history page.
Does windows 10 disk cleanup remove windows updates? I updated windows 10 , i reboot and i run disk cleanup as administrator but in the list there is no entry about windows updates....
View 9 RepliesI cant seem to run MS Windows and Office auto updates (or manual).
keep getting the following message
'Updates are available, but we temporarily need 489.48 MB-489.48 MB of space to download. Remove some things you don't need right now and we'll try again.'
There is currently 10.6GB of free space on the system partition.
I have just (on Friday 20 Feb 2016) installed the Windows 10 upgrade from the MS site.
Took 6/7 attempts to finally get it done.
HDMI driver not working
Audio not working properly (keeps saying USB Audio playback default) I don't have anything plugged in. I have a realtek HD Audio installed.
Wifi is very flaky.....keeps disconnecting or reporting limited connection intermittently......15/20 times a day.
Running virgin Superhub, with 150mb pipe,
everything was working perfectly prior to the Upgrade from windows 7 sp1 to Windows 10.
I cleaned installed Win10 Pro using the Media Creation Tool and how come I only got 3 updates? I am assuming I would get more updates than these.
Running version 1511 build 10586
Is it because Win10 is too new ???
And I kept pressing the Check for Updates button and it said no more new updates.
Windows 10 always does a disk check when I start my computer
View 1 RepliesSince I changed to my new hard-drive I have had random issues with BSOD's trying to get into Windows.
The BSOD I get is: Kernel Security Check Failure
Usually, I just need to restart the computer, but now I can't get in at all.
I believe it has to do with some drivers, since the hardware has worked well in Win 8.1

I have my settings on to receive windows updates automatically. In the past three weeks I keep seeing that in the history all updates have failed to either download or install.
View 2 RepliesI am running windows 10 pro and now i want to update my system using "Windows Updates". The problem is that Windows Update is showing numerous new updates for the system but i have a mobile broadband (ie. usb dongle type) for internet purposes over which i want to download all the system updates. but the updates wont download maybe because Windows 10 has set this connection type as 'metered'.
Whats even worse is that the metered and non-metered choice is grayed out and i cannot change it. I then tried the command prompt method described on this site. it momentarily does change the mobile broadband connection as 'Unrestricted' but STILL windows wont download any updates over this connection .
I want to know HOW to download updates through Windows Update application using my mobile broadband connection.
editing the relevant registry entries to force Windows use mobile broadband for Windows Updates?
PS: I don't have ANY other source of internet ie. Wifi or Ethernet.
Just when I was happy with my installation I error checked my main C: drive with is a Samsung SSD, Windows reported that it had found some errors and it needed to be rebooted to correct them. I rebooted the PC and the check disk did it's repairs and it booted back in to Windows. I noticed straight away that the start menu had stopped working and when I opened Windows Explorer or did anything within it (like right click properties) or any settings windows like control panel it would take for ever. Opening programs like Internet Explorer work fine.
I have tried System Restoring to before I did the drive repair and sfc /scannow and Dism/Online/Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth but I still have the problems. The SFC found errors and corrected them but still no Start Menu.
I do have a Trueimage backup from Last Friday which I will have to use if I cannot sort this out. Yesterday due to a on going occasional BSD I had fully uninstalled my Nvidia Geforce Video drivers using a utility that was recommended to me on this forum, I then reinstalled the drivers and it had been fine up until I did the Scan for errors so I don't think it's nothing to do with that.
I installed windows 10 old window files were deleted today. Now my Microsoft word 2013 has no spell check.
View 1 RepliesHow can I turn off windows updates? The new windows update settings page is extremely basic and appears to lack many options from windows 7. I am concerned about updates downloading and update checks being performed whilst gaming. I would not be happy with bandwidth or system resources being used up during my play sessions as performance may be impacted. Is there any way to either disable the updates or to ensure update checks and downloads are only performed at specific times?

View 9 RepliesI no longer have a Windows update app to check for updates as I typically do. When I type in 'Windows Update' in the Search the web and Windows, the App always popped up for me to select it to check updates. It is no longer there? Using Windows 10 Pro 64bit, desktop, fresh install I did about a month ago.
View 7 RepliesI am having problems installing Windows 10 updates...... again.
This update is dated 29.10.2015 and consists of 2 updates.
KB 3105210 states "waiting for download" and KB 3106932 states "waiting for installation" It has been stuck on this for several hours and my attempts to use the repair tools have failed to resolve the problem.
Is there a way to get Windows Update as a feed (xml, rss) - so I know which updates are coming or know about them on day 1 release!
I know about the MS technet website for the security updates, but I'm on about general updates.
So far no real issue's to report running Windows 10 I really love it but here is my issue. Windows update has been stuck at 45% for the last 3 hour's and usually my updates go pretty quick. I've tried rebooting my system to see if the updates will finish installing but then it goes right back to 45% and stay's there.
View 5 RepliesI'm not sure if it's a Surface 3 specific issues and the S3 has been one problem after another on Win 10 but my store downloads and Windows Update downloads just seem to get stuck and never complete. WU never gets off of "Waiting for download".
Every so a store update may start to download. It can take a good 4 to 8 hours, if at all, for all the updates to process. If a download does start it seems to run normally.
Checking my task manager shows the CPU and network are mostly sitting idle.
I've cleared out the SofrwareDistribution folder but it hasn't worked.
I have a limited data pack so I want to stop my Windows 10 PC's automatic updates. Is there any way to do this?
View 1 RepliesI have been reading online that there is a-way to download a tool from MS about stopping unwanted Windows updates in Windows 10. But I can’t find the tool; Where do I download it and is it even available anymore?
