Working OS Suddenly Won't Load (four Blue Squares Then Reboot)
Nov 6, 2015
I've had some fun and games with Windows 10 so far (Solved Windows 10 upgrade - random freezes and PC becomes unresponsive - Windows 10 Forums). Now something else seems to have gone wrong.
I was fiddling around with the BIOS last night (trying to get the PC to see 8GB rather than my current 6GB of memory). Anyway, I couldn't, so I switched all the BIOS settings back to what they were (even did a CMOS reset). However, I now find that my PC won't boot into Windows 10. It crashes/reboots as soon as the four blue squares appear on screen (usually before the little dots even have time to rotate).
I can't boot into Safe Mode. Inserting a Windows 10 DVD also falls over. Even the Macrium Reflect boot disc I have won't work. However - mine is a dual boot machine - it will boot into Windows 7 without a hitch.
I've tried using the BoYans.net Dual-boot Repair tool, but no no avail. Ditto Tenorshare Windows Boot Genius - though it does at least boot, but none of the tools within it have made any difference (I've tried Boot File Recovery and MBR Recovery - I didn't run Boot Sector Recovery, as it mentions making "All boot sectors of this partition... compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7".)
Can it possibly be something weird in the BIOS - even though I've reset it on more than one occasion? Or is it, as I suspect, some weird boot problem (again!) - both the above tools can see the Windows 10 installation, so I know it's still there in theory.

I recently received the Windows 10 download on a desktop PC. The installation seemed to be going swimmingly however desktop suddenly powered off. Upon reboot, I'm stuck in a vicious failure loop. I tried to restore to no avail and tried to boot Windows 7 from a physical disk, but no matter what I try it appears my desktop PC is history. It ran Windows 7 just fine. I really wish I hadn't pushed my luck with Windows 10.

Over the course of about a month and a half I've been getting these BSODs that state driver irql not less or equal (netio.sys) and also sometimes page fault in non paged area. the weird thing is that after 5 mins the system crashes however after I reboot the system works perfectly fine. I've been hearing a lot of reports online that the crashing has to do with faulty drivers, and i noticed that my wireless adapter (Asus pce ac68) was not working properly according to device manager I new it was faulty drivers so I took it into my local computer shop and the next day they had it fixed. However the problem has not been fixed. I still get the BSODs and apparently antivirus software is partly to blame. could Norton 360 (the antivirus software that i use) be responsible for all these crashes?

A couple of weeks ago when booting up my PC, I came to I assume the Windows 10 version of the blue screen of death. It said something to the effect of a kernel security check error, it said it was repairing the PC and would reboot.
However, it wouldn't reboot. The farthest it would ever go is the 4 blue square windows screen and then eventually the screen would go black. For a while, the blue light on my monitor would stay solid but the "analog" and "digital" icons on the screen would alternate between analog and digital. Eventually it would just go black and the monitor screen would blink and the HDD light would stay off.
Multiple reboot attempts never got past that screen, and eventually the screen will just go black and the monitor light just blinks.
I went to my office computer that also runs Windows 10 and made a repair disk. I got home today, got into the BIOS and changed the boot priority to the DVD. I was able to get it to boot up to the repair disc (after a couple of attempts) and got into the repair utility. I tried the Start Up (or boot) repair, and it said it couldn't fix it. I tried the system restore and it said I had no restore points. So I thought (stupidly), maybe just getting into this repair disc area it would go ahead and boot on up. So I clicked "Exit and continue to Windows 10". Well that got be right back to where I was, a black screen.
So then I decided I would just go back in and use the utility to "reset", keep certain files and do a clean Windows 10 reinstall. Now I can't even get back into it. When I try to boot, IF I can even get any data to show on the screen and the monitor to "wake up" I can't get back into the repair disc. I can get as far as "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" and then it will go to the 4 blue square windows screen that I was at previously, then eventually the screen will flash and then just stay black. By a little googling, sounds like maybe it could be a video card issue?

Up until a few days ago I was able to import .MOV files from my iPhone 5 to my Windows 10 computer and play them with the default 'Films & TV' app. For some reason my computer now hates this file type. It wont play any audio unless its through the slow Quicktime media player, even vlc doesn't work. Also I edit these video with Sony Vegas Pro 13 and now whenever I drag them onto the timeline the video corrupts and screen freezes!!

I installed the Windows 10 beta from Window 7 a few days ago. I installed all the recent updates. Everything was working fine but then yesterday, I watched something on YouTube for about an hour and at that point the mouse became unresponsive. I've tried everything I can think of but nothing works. I've shut down, re-booted, gone into the bios but with no success. Windows 10 will open but the mouse remains unresponsive. I even plugged-in a brand new mouse but that hasn't worked at all.
I have another hard drive with Windows 8.1 from my other PC that has a defective motherboard and out of frustration, I installed the drive from that PC on this one. It works but sometimes I have to re-boot my PC a few times on start-up and then if I leave a browser open for a while without activity, the browser becomes unresponsive and although the mouse cursor works, it is not able to do anything.

So I put together a new PC running Windows 10 Pro around 3 months ago and everything was working perfect till 2 days ago when my mic suddenly stopped working. I use a Steelseries Siberia V2 headset and the headphones work fine, but the mic is not picking up any noise at all. I tried plugging in both the back and front ports and my realtek always detects that a mic has been plugged in, but it simply won't work. I thought maybe my mic got busted so I also tried using an A4 Tech headset that I had lying around in the office but it has the same issue, the mic won't work. I looked around online for possible solutions and tried the following with no luck:
Ensured the mic was set as the default device and that its volume settings were maxed out.Tried disabling all sound effects (noise suppression, acoustic echo cancellation etc).Uninstalled all audio drivers and reinstalled the latest realtek drivers on my motherboard's webpage: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1151 - GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0)
Uninstalled all audio drivers and reinstalled the latest realtek drivers on realtek's own webpage: RealtekUninstalled all audio drivers and let Windows auto-install drivers.I even uninstalled all realtek drivers and tried using the standard "high definition audio device drivers."
Basically tried everything in this link: Microphone Not Working in Windows 10? | Win 10 FAQ
The conclusion was the same with everything I tried, the sound worked fine in both my speakers and headphones, but the mics simply didn't work. What's strange is that it just stopped working out of nowhere. I didn't install any new software or hardware or make any changes prior to the issue. Just turned the PC on one day and boom, mics not working.
I've attached screenshots of what my mic settings looked like with the realtek drivers and without.

I got home today and went to open the start menu on my computer, but it didn't respond. Neither does the search menu, nor Windows Edge, or Groove Music or the Windows 10 video program. All of my other programs on the task bar open when I click them, and when I right click the start menu button I am given a list of options, but not ability to access any of the application that I don't have on my task bar or desktop. I tried running POWERSHELL and sfc /scannow, but it found not integrity violations. So now I am not sure what next.

On my main Windows 10 machine my mechanical keyboard has suddenly stopped working. The keyboard itself works perfectly fine on my other systems and laptops but seems to not work on my main one. The keyboard works on the bios screen and any other part of the start up except from the login screen which is when it seems to completely stop responding. Buttons such as caps lock and also the num-lock stop lighting up the LED's and no keys seem to work. The computer recognizes other keyboards, which is how I'm writing this post, but it seems that my expensive mechanical doesn't work on this specific machine.
The keyboard itself is one that only requires the HID Interface, so you just plug it in and it works and I've even tried uninstalling all keyboard drivers but this is still no dice. I'm not really quite sure what to do, seeing as the keyboard only seems to go wrong on this machine, and other keyboards work fine,

My searchbar/cortana has suddenly stopped working, when I click I get a message telling me there is a problem, please sign out.
-So I created a new user account, this fixed the problem for that account
-So I tried to sign in to the newly added local account with my Microsoft account and entered my username and password
-I then got a screen asking for my old password (I assume its the microsoft password)
-I got a message telling me its not correct for this device (I only have one password)
-So I left it blank (as per the on screen instructions)
-The I got an error screen 'oops something went wrong, its probably our fault' and that's it, cant get any further.
So I thought Id transfer all the files and settings from my old account to the new account, and Ive hit a brick wall, how can I do this ? the new account has no knowledge og my applications, documents, pictures, etc. I just cant install everything.

For some reason two finger scroll just stopped working even though it was working about an hour ago. Why it changed or what i did to change it. I tried entering the control panel, mouse, then synaptics settings, and enabling vertical scrolling, but that didn't seem to fix the problem.

I occasionally (but frequently enough that it is noticeable) get an unresponsive start menu. When this happens Win+P for display switching also does not work. The start menu starts working after a reboot and only after a reboot. Obviously this gets annoying because of all the windows I have to reopen. What I've tried when the start menu stops working:
1. sfc /scannow - this doesn't show any errors
2. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"} - the process finishes but the start menu doesn't start working anyway
I really hate restarting the PC when this happens.

On Dec 14th a W10 updated (critical update) was implemented.
On Dec 15th I received a "Critical Update. Your Start Menu is not working .... etc. We'll try and fix at next reboot"
I've been on various forums, reloaded in "Safe Mode", etc but the problem still exists.

Other software won't work either I used sound-blaster as an example. Also Don't know if this is related but when I turn on my PC I boot real fast at windows log-in screen in seconds but after logging in windows takes for ever to load, just sits on log-in screen spinning for at least a minute. if I restart or not, some windows will never stop loading.

Since the November update I've found my icons in Settings / Notifications 'Show notifications from these apps' are black squares.
I've tried deleting and rebuilding the icon and thumbnail caches, rebooted and still have the same.
Before the update they were fine and I've not noticed any other icons show the same.
Any way to clear or refresh these icons ?

Recently I've started to encounter an error when booting my computer, occasionally it would boot to a weird flashing white and black screen. An example of this can be seen here: [URL]....
This occurs just before the login screen. While this happens, my cursor is still visible, though larger than normal. After a while, the flashing stops and the screen stays black, usually before this I would force restart my PC then it would boot fine.

After closing down computer the other day, when trying to switch back on Windows start screen comes on with 4 squares and rotating dots, but the screen then just goes black or white with no mouse pointer.
I have tried F8 which goes into recovery mode and I have tried all repair modes, but none of them work.
it must surely be something to do with Windows as I can go into recovery mode.

Only once in a blue moon do I see clean shortcut icons without arrows. It's almost always shortcut icons overlaid with black squares on the lower left corners. I had checked the Windows Registry against the steps in the article twice to find that they were all correct.

I can't open "This PC" or any other folder that is on my desktop. File Explorer won't function either. Whether I double-click, or do a right-click and choose "Run", all that happens is the little hourglass comes on for 1/10th of a second. If I do a right-click, choose properties, and click on "Open Target Location", my entire screen goes black for 2 seconds and then comes back with icons repopulating the window slowly. In fact, this is my second time composing this message, because my Edge Browser crashed the first time, because I did the "Open Target Location" during composition, just to make sure it wasn't a one time anomaly.
This inability started 2 days ago. Since then, I've tried:
1. The SFC ScanNow. Everything is Fine.
2. Running complete boot-time scans using Avast and Malwarebytes. No Viruses, Adware, etc..
3. System Restore. Surprisingly only one Restore Point was there, and it was only 10 hours old. Not back far enough.
4. Burned the latest Windows10 ISO to DVD and Reinstalled Windows...keeping all files/settings. Four hours invested in doing this last night... made no difference.
Still can't open any Folders or "This PC". All the other right-click functions work, except for "OPEN". All other aspects of this P.C. work great, just like they did before this one major problem suddenly appeared. This shouldn't be THAT big of a deal to fix. Never had problems even remotely like this in Windows 7 or even Vista. What should I do next?
