Apply Button For Settings?
Dec 13, 2015Can't find one. Apparently the only way to invoke a change is to hit the X button. Which is a pain if I want to look at alternatives. Maybe a keyboard shortcut?

View 1 RepliesI am running a fully updated Windows 10 Pro Eng. Build 10586.
I go to the start menu, click on settings and when I click on the Update & Security button the window just vanishes !
I have restarted and tried several times to no avail.
I have an Acer (Intel Pentium Windows 10, 64-bit) computer which I bought a few months ago, and created one 'user' (my name - say John) Suddenly this week when I logged in (as John) the only items on the desktop were the default programs installed with the computer; all my files were gone. When opening the browser, or windows media player, all my custom settings were gone and it was as if the programs were being used for the first time. The default program used to open files (e.g. the original program instead of windows media player) had all reverted also.
The start button was/is also not working. After a panic, I then discovered my files are still there and accessible - to do so I have to right-click on one of the programs on desktop and 'open file location' then I can use the left column to (through windows explorer) get to C drive then 'Users' then 'John' and I can access everything that way.
Also, the keyboard settings have changed ie shift + 2 gives the @ sign instead of quotation mark. I have Norton which suggests no virus involved. I didn't have system restore activated. When computer starts it says press DEL to enter setup but nothing happens when I press it.
I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 Home (64bit) from Windows 7 Home (64bit). I am having problems that I cannot find a fix to in the common faults section. As in the title, my start button is not working. The action center, settings and task manager are not working also. Other problems I am having are: I cannot open a new user account, I cannot log into my guest account or one of my main accounts and I cannot log into cmd as administrator by right clicking on it in the task bar. I have tried to fix the start menu my opening powershell as administrator and pasting some code into it, but it did not work.
View 2 RepliesI want to set my Explorer to have certain sortable columns when I open my folders. I have been able to do this will 7 and 8.1
I can change the sort columns, but where is the "Apply to all folder of this type" button?
Can't find how to make those columns the default.
How do I apply a view, specifically the "list" view, to only all of the subfolders of a folder without changing each one individually.
View 6 RepliesI have managed to create a USB pen drive to apply WIM images using the DISM Apply-image command in 64bit so I know it can be done but how to create a pen to apply 32bit WIM images
View 6 Repliesa few days ago my windows 10 crashed so I had to format and reinstall windows 7 then upgrade to windows 10, a hard work to do. So I started to search about how to capture the image of C: where the windows 10 is running and I found Dism. Now I have a lot of questions about it, let me start with the capture of C: as an image.wim.
1- Does dism Capture-Image works for windows 10?
I used the following comand to capture a image:
Code:
dism.exe /Capture-Image /ImageFile:D:Image_of_Windows_10.wim /CaptureDir:C: /Name:Windows_10 /compress fast
It generated a .WIM file with 16 Gb.
2- Is FAST option better than MAXIMUM? Or should I use NONE instead?
3- Now with the image of the c: stored in hard drive, if my windows 10 crashes, is this how I should recover it? applying the image file .WIM or should I format the partition first?
Code:
dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:D:Image_of_Windows_10.wim /Index:1 /ApplyDir:C:
4- After using DISM to apply will windows 10 boot and work like a charm?
5- Do I have to configure the boot with BCDBOOT?
Code:
C:WindowsSystem32bcdboot C:Windows

View 5 RepliesI had changed the system variables in order to change the default install drive. My C drive is an SSD and I didn't want Adobe hashing up my SSD if it wasn't necessary. Everything seemed to be working well, but windows update will not apply updates and internet explorer (and some other) software will not run. Possibly due to the system variables, but I am unsure what to change or if that is even at fault.

I need to be able to update, and IE has to be used occasionally. (I exclusively use chrome so I hadn't really noticed that IE wasn't working.)
Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586. has been installed but the Restart Now button did not work. It says
We're having trouble restarting to finish the install. Try again in a little while. If you keep seeing this, try searching the web or contacting support. This error code : (0x80070032)
I manually restart the PC but the update did not applied.
I have my Windows 10 for around 3 days now, the thing is, in the second day after my computer froze when i was playing counter strike, everything in the task bar but my shortcuts stopped working, they dont open anymore, but when i click it, the cursor blue loading circle shows up but nothing happens.
View 1 RepliesI just did a clean install on W10 and change my bios to UEFI (which it supports.) I'm having this intermittent problem with the Windows "Start" Button in the lower left. It just stops working - left clicking doesn't do anything, although right-clicking does. I just have the basics installed now.
Also, my Windows "Start" key on my keyboard stops working as well. I checked on a keyboard checker and the key itself is fine. I have to log out/back in to get it to work again.
last few hours I spent trying to manually deploy Windows 10 on clean GPT disk but after applying image and rebooting I always end in unbootable state.
I manually setup drive like this:
Code:
select disk 0cleanconvert gptcreate partition primary size 350 #RE tools won't fit 300MB anymore :-)format quick fs ntfs label "Windows RE tools"assign letter tset id de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6acgpt attributes 0x8000000000000001create partition efi size 100format quick fs fat32 label Systemassign letter screate partition msr size 128create partition primary format quick fs ntfs label Windowsassign letter wlist volumeexit#no recovery image partition as per documentation it is no longer needed and followed by pretty common deployment:
Code:
dism /apply-image /imagefile:g:Sourcesinstall.wim /index:1 /applydir:w:dism /image:w: /set-Timezone:"Central Europe Standard Time"md T:RecoveryWindowsREattrib w:WindowsSystem32RecoveryWinre.wim -h -s -rcopy w:WindowsSystem32RecoveryWinre.wim T:RecoveryWindowsREwinre.wimbcdboot w:windows /s s: /f UEFIw:WindowsSystem32
eagentc /setreimage /path T:RecoveryWindowsRE /target w:Windows
After reboot I always end unbootable (as we talk Apple computer it means 1) no partition on Option or 2) folder with ? or 3) just gray screen, make your pick). There's a chance that Windows rely on some UEFI 2.0 feature, which is not available as the old guy has 1.2 only. Or maybe I missed some step somewhere.
I'm trying to access the settings for Cortana, the program works fine and all but I want to access the settings but once I bring up the options and specifically click settings,Cortana freezes and forces me to have to end the task, and it happens every time. What can I do?
View 4 RepliesPower & Sleep settings won't save my screen brightness settings. On my plugged in HP laptop default the screen brightness is set to maximum despite making changes in the Power & Sleep menu screen. I've even tried creating my own Power Plan but the next time it restarts it changes to the HP recommended power plan which sets the screen brightness to maximum.
View 1 RepliesWhen I click "Taskview" there is no "Add New Desktop" button.
View 2 RepliesHow do you get to all programs button on windows 10?
View 4 RepliesI got nearly a week ago a HP laptop that originally had win 8 on it, but installed win 10 right after starting it up. Things are working fine so as the bringing up the start menu by clicking on the start icon. but for the last 2 days now the start button does not pop up anymore when i click on it.
Doesn't matter if i move the cursor over it with the touch pad or with a mouse. also the search icon next to it doesn't react either. all the other icons work without any hassle.
I am still not a 100% familiar with win 10 and laptops, so im not sure what the problem could be. I can right click on it to turn off the laptop but being able to call up the menu with a simple left click should be functional.
my start button wont work, i cannot restart my computer and even from the sign on screen the only option i ave it to shut down. my icons are still on the taskbar but i cannot view them and when i open my browsers its deleting my last sessions even when i have them saved to appear each time i open the browser. my time and date is gone as well as any viable option to get to my drivers and computer settings. the only thing ive been able to get to is the actio of using the windows button and pressing r but each seach i get an error message that anything i type cant be found.
View 3 RepliesSo I upgraded to W10 on my laptop (MSI GT-60), and ran into several problems, most annoying are these two:
1. Search button next to start isn't working, I tried to restart Windows Search in services, but that didn't work, the only solution is to create a new windows account, then it works, but that's just not ideal
2. A minor problem, but still - icons on my desktop cant be moved to the very bottom of my screen - it simply puts them back one "box" above, and that's just annoying, since I am used to having the trash can at the very bottom of my screen.
I've done sfc/scannow several times, tried to clean the PC with CCleaner, but nothing worked, the computer is otherwise running smoothly, but this is just annoying...
I don't like them because they shrink the icon size and when I move the cursor to the bottom of the screen where the red arrow is and click it doesn't register.
View 5 Replieswhen i click on the start button, either right or left click, there is absolutelyno kind of response. i cannot get to the control panel, nor turn off the laptop, nor anything else. the stupid thing is only two months old
View 3 RepliesMy Win10 Home 64 bit computer was working correctly yesterday. Today there was one notification which just showed 'windows.immersivecontrolpanel-cw5n1h2xyewy! microsoft.windows.it', although I am not sure if the last part was something like 'immersive' as the last character looked strange, so could have been part of a letter.
At the same time I had update KB3081438 which required a restart, so I powered down as usual, rather than restarting, waited 20secs and then started up again. Now clicking the start button does nothing except that the icon changes colour. In addition I had Settings pinned to the task bar and now there is just a space where it used to be. I can click on the messages icon in the tray on the right and open Settings that way, but it is quite slow to respond. I have also noticed that a couple of other icons are missing, but there is a space where they used to be.
I did a System Restore to a restore point created yesterday but all that did was mess up Office 2016 which I had to do a repair on. Quick Repair did not solve the problem but the full repair did, although it was a bit of a struggle to get Office to reconnect to my account as it did not like my MS Passport login, and did not accept the key I copied from MSs website.
since earlier this week my Start button has come up with a Critical Error when I click on it advising that "Your Start menu is not working. We'll try to fix it next time you sign in".
View 1 RepliesI think, in my naivety, I may have clicked on something to cause the malfunction as it did work immediately after download. Have clicked on everything possible to remedy but to no avail.
